Jan, I got here through Elmore, whom I interviewed for a newspaper article when I worked for his old home town newspaper, where I worked for a year. I have interviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of people over the years. And I've stayed in touch with only three, my friend Carol, Hudson Talbott and Elmore.

I ushered two performances of Paw Patrol Live today and should be lobotomized after that. People spending outrageous amounts of money for their 2-year-old to see a live performance of their favorite Nickelodeon show.

One family bought the $75 VIP tickets and completely ignored the house rules, which is that each person has to have a ticket. Fire marshall's rules. But they thought that didn't include their 9-month-old infant in a stroller about the size of a Sunday house, even though every item of advance publicity said otherwise and many other also bought tickets for their infant. I thought the father was going to blow a gasket when I told him the rules. He wasn't going to spent $54 for another ticket, so he left his wife and kids. Probably went out and had a beer or two before collecting his family.

He was probably happy to have an excuse not to go.

I just finished the first half of the 1990s BBC adaptation of Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Three hours to go. When I was a grad student, I was hospitalized in the student health center for a week with the flu. Vanity Fair was the novel I took with me. I'd like to reread it.
