vixmom - Did you see the "Viva Max!" reading,  in January 2018, a month before the 54 Below show.

That was at the Actors Temple on W. 47th St between 8th and 9th.

T.O.D.

I've listened to the original cast recordings of some, but have not really seen any recent new musicals.

Frankly, the scores didn't do anything for me.

The last 2 musicals I really liked were LES MIZ and RAGTIME.

What was that?  30-40 years ago?

I've got the CD of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.  That's pleasant, but....

Back in the day, a hit musical would produce 2-3-4-5 songs that would become stand alone hits.

Most shows today, that I'm familiar with, don't even produce one.

Oh yes I did .  Iwasalso there once before for a school trip the Vixter did in high school , it was a Shakespeare festival where different school groups prepared a scene from a Shakespeare play and performed it for the others then a couple of professional actors gave them suggestions and discussed the scene.

But I was never there for a religious service

A very good Indy 500 yesterday.....only one injury - a pit crew member....a spectacular crash near the end with NO injuries....no rain delays.

And one of the good guys won.....the second place guy was a hot head member of the Andretti team, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  I don't get the love and worship for that jerk....he always has been and always will be a jerk, a sore loser, and a cheater....

The TOD is most interesting.

Like DR DRUXY, I haven't seen a LOT of new type musicals.  I see the songs on the Tony Awards....and mostly it's "meh."

However I have purchased CD's of a few in the last couple of seasons that I liked....more or less:

The Great Comet....it's a favorite
Gentleman's Guide to Murder
Dear Evan Hanson.....but I don't worship at its altar

Bandstand....with some fun faux big band songs and a nice story....

I will leave you with ALL of the Disney cartoon retreads and most of the movies on stage....no interest in TOOTSIE or BEETLEJUICE....or those of its kind.

No interest in THE PROM either....

I do not have rehearsal tonight.....so I get to stay home.  Birdy Barnum is very happy.

DR TCB I mentioned the same thing to our Send Me No Flowers director.  I said he might want to use Doris Day singing at the end for the last moment and the bows.....

She will be hanging over the entire evening....and our leading lady certainly doesn't give any Doris....she won't watch the movie because she thinks her comedy stylings are impeccable - she is good---but she is NOT Doris.

I am hoping the director will go along with that one concession.

The only current movie-to-stage adaptation I wouldn't mind seeing (like, if someone laid a ticket on me) is BEETLEJUICE, because I think I'd find seeing those characters and situations acted out on stage very enjoyable if done well. And that's all I can surmise, since I've not heard one word or one note of it.

What? It’s been two and a half hours since I posted that?

What do you think this is, a national holiday or something?

The most notable part of this Memorial Day is that, apparently, hardly anyone remembers how to get to HHW!!

It is very quiet out on Pearl Street.  I guess the normal park goers are either out of town, or they overslept.

I shouldn't comment on the T.O.D., because I really don't know that much about music; but when has that ever stopped me.  I used to say that in community theater there were two types of performers in musicals; singers who could act and actors who could sing.  Lately, I have found there are also a lot of singers who can't act and actors that can't sing.  Oh well!

I have always been in the category of an actor who can sing.  I don't really read music, especially in the bass clef.  I used to sing in my mom's choir in junior high, and I played clarinet all through school.  I remember one of my band teachers tried to switch me over to playing the bassoon.  It didn't work, because I couldn't make heads or tails out of the bass clef.

I tried taking a music theory class in high school, but I eventually transferred to a different foreign language class that was easier -- English.

I have an okay singing voice, but I have given a great many music directors gray hair getting me to that point.

I like some of the newer musicals, but I basically prefer the classic musicals.  I guess I am going to have to break down and see HAMILTON, because just listening to the OBC doesn't really move me.  Actually, I didn't like the cast album of SWEENEY TODD until I had seen the show on Broadway.

I am not sure what a counts as new musical.  I love the scores of TITANIC and RAGTIME, but newer shows like NEXT TO NORMAL and SPRING AWAKENING don't do a thing for me.

That is one advantage of having Sirius radio in my car, because I keep it tuned to the Broadway channel.  That way I can hear some of the songs from the new shows, but in small doses, and without having to buy the CD.  I like most of the music I have heard from COME FROM AWAY, but there is also a sameness to all of the songs, to the point that I can usually spot a song from that show in the first eight bars.
