MEMORIES, LIKE THE CORNERS OF MY MIND
« on: June 25, 2019, 12:11:19 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like the corners of my mind and had memories, and now it is time for you to post until the corner cows come home.

My favorite sandwich is not vegetarian  :-\

It is a turkey sandwich with mayo & lettuce.  Even better than lettuce is good coleslaw.

We have a rainy day, which could be a problem getting to and from City Center.  Since becoming a gimp, I cannot accommodate a cane, umbrella, and bag, so it means I will be wet - hopefully not soaking wet - most of the day.

T.O.D.

One thing I definitely miss about Los Angeles is the delis.

Yes, they have delis here in Austin, but they're not the same.

I sometimes think it would almost be worth enduring a 3 hour flight to Los Angeles (and back) to have a corned beef/pastrami sandwich at Canter's.

What a great collection of photos. Please keep them coming. I was especially interested in the Stop the World / Roar of the Greasepaint ones — but that’s not to choose favorites, they’re all fascinating.

TOD

The main event for me is always the pastrami (or occasionally an alternate deli meat), but it doesn’t stand alone. It’s the whole picture:  the pickles, the sandwich, the cole slaw... and the vibe. Very important, that vibe.

Well, it’s “Classics Tuesday” again. This evening I’m going to see MIDNIGHT COWBOY on the big screen at the wonderful Bedford Playhouse.

I rarely think to have soup, and I should. But that lox & bagel would be a major alternate type of meal for me. I'm afraid I haven't had it in years.

The one place for it that stands out in my memory is Factor's. During the year that I was living in my friend's condo two blocks south (Beverly Dr. at Cashio), it became a regular thing to walk up there for one piled high. My standard is lox, cream cheese, slice of onion, slice of tomato, capers.

That, friends, is as much a mouth-gasming sensation as a great pastrami with thousand and slaw.

If the TOD means one food, that would be matzoh ball soup.

Strangely, when a collaborator Ellen Schwartz would order from Artie's Deli, the cheese blintzes were always great, even extraordinary.  But I had them in person with the group before an HHW event at the Triad, and that night they were blah and ordinary.

If that were what they were like the first time I went to Artie's, I might never have gone back.  But the next time, I made a point of saying how great they were when my collaborator had ordered in, and they were great again.  (They don't care anyway, because they're gone now.  But I wonder if some restaurants don't quite get that a bad dish can lose them a customer for good.)
