WRITING A MUSICAL IS HARD

Well, you've read the notes, writing the notes was hard, and now it is time for you to post until the writing cows some home - they're currently writing a new MOOsical.

To continue from last night:

Fortunately, the problem of not having film in my camera wasn't a total loss.  I did buy a disposable panoramic camera, so I have about a dozen wide pictures from that week. :)

Well, I'm struggling to stay awake, so I need to go to bed.

Good night, jan, and have a good day, all!

Early morning vibes from Indiana.

I woke up at 6:10 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep, so I got up.  Barnum was not amused.  He was still on his sleeping swing, but I got him up anyway.  So he is having an early breakfast and is busy throwing the fruit out of his food cup.

Tonight is our dress rehearsal and production photos.

Last night was a tech night which was okay.  The director said we had to wear costumes, which was kind of unnecessary, but that's okay.

Then three times during the notes the director and his tech director congratulated themselves on have a REAL tech rehearsal which is NEVER done at this theatre...NEVER....

Which is not true...but let them think as they will.  I don't think either will be working here again....at least I hope not.  Why would you do nothing but bad mouth the people who give you an opportunity?

Oh....and of course the heat pump stopped working during the night  BUT someone is coming this afternoon OR tomorrow to fix the connection....

I've bathed and fed the cats.  I don't know if Annabelle ate or not.  Her nose was stopped up, so I washed out the gunk, and got in the tub.  For all I know, Stella and Thatch ate her breakfast.

On my return, I will tidy the apartment.  I don't like to vacuum before 9:00, and the apartment needs it.

We've made our patrol.  Annabelle met a new neighbor and saw a few birds, so she's quite pleased.

The informal rule for anything a friend (even a business friend) puts out there in public was passed along by Lehman Engel to BMI workshoppers, and I think it was Maury Yeston who jocularly codified it as "The seven-block rule."  Since you never know who at the event is another friend, and these decades producers send younger people from their office who tell them whether to request a full script and score, you can't know who the friends are and who can help the show.  Maury described it as no matter what you thought of it, anything you say within seven blocks of where it took place will not be negative.  And if you observe it, most likely the favor will be returned to you.
Your friends are there to tell the truth if they are enthusiastic, stay quiet or lie if they don't like it, and send theirs note quietly.

There's a story somewhere where Sondheim tells Jason Robert Brown something similar, only positive the day of the performance; then, save the notes for the next day when asked.

My dog is not a fan of July 4th...or New Year's Eve.

The fireworks scare him "to death".

I will be leaving for the airport in a few hours.  On my way to see Barbra in London.   The concert is part of "British Summer Time."   It takes place in Hyde Park.    It's an "all-standing" event.   Not looking forward to that part.

Wednesday morning greetings!  This is my first slow morning in quite a while and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.  I might even have a third cup of coffee...

The most painful reading I’ve sat through was the play version of THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. It was done on our I DO! I DO! set, in front of back wall of the turntable that was turned to obscure the main trappings of the set. The director gave her introduction, then walked behind the wall of the turntable from whence she proceeded to yell out (not being miked) the stage directions throughout the play. She thought the disembodied voice would provide a more effective ambience. It was hideous.
