THE LONG AND THE SHORT SCREED

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a nuked long screed replaced by a non-nuked short screed, and now it is time for you to post until the long and the short cows come home.

I hope you find out what's happening with the hardcover books, BK!  They'll probably say that it's related to everything being closed because of the coronavirus, but they should at least be in contact with you.  I can only imagine what their other authors may be experiencing.

Funny, after finding Gerri's real name, I found very old comments from her but nothing new on your timeline.  If I remember I will try again from my computer.

I slept rather well, and to my surprise the cats let me sleep until 6:30 without pestering me.

Annabelle's acting lethargic and contrary this morning, so I gave her a dose of Lysine.  I should do this more regularly than I do.

DR George, I'm sorry to hear about your VCR issues.  I have several movies that have never been released on DVD, like the French Lacenaire AKA The Elegant Criminal  that I cannot play because my VCR is dead.  I've wanted to purchase a new one.

DR George, Jeanne Lehman has been a friend since the very early 1980s.  She's a beautiful lady, and I am very fond of her.  Her husband died several years ago now from heart issues, and he was far too young.  She does appear in a nice role of a nasty snob on my Roberta recording, but she doesn't sing a note!

BK, The Brides of Dracula and the more perverse Vampire Circus are my two favorite Hammer films.  I also love Carry On Cleo.  I think the Carry On films are hit or miss, but I'd put Carry On Cleo, Carry On Cowboy, and Carry On Screaming as my faves.

Once I tidy up, I will work on my orchestration a bit, listen to some more Ravel, and finish off the DVD of Middlemarch.  I've got too many Netflix discs sitting here to catch up on, so we nmay watch The Ghost and Mrs Muir tonight.

I had something to rant about.  A mutual friend of mine and Dr Ginny had kidney surgery several months ago.  When I mentioned my surgery on FB, she offered me some foam suppor pillows that she claimed helped her through her recovery.  I appreciated that but I declined the offer for several reasons:
  1.  I have no idea how my recovery will go or how long it will last.
  2.  My apartment seemed large in 1980, but that was 40 years ago! I have no idea what these pillows are like or how large.  What the hell do I do with them?

So, the upshot is I got an email last night from her saying that she had ordered me a set from Amazon, only they may not arrive until June 3, which is probably the day I will be released from hospital.  It's a kind and generous gesture, but it's one m,ore irritation I really do not need.

DR Elmore:  Oy.  I learned over the years that when a New Yorker (not necessarily one of Cole Porter’s) says they have no room for something or other ..... they mean it. People who haven’t been around NYC apartments, most of which are much more cramped for space than even supposedly equivalent ones elsewhere, have no idea. It’s a whole different world.

I think what really pisses me off is, when I say no - whether I should have or not - I mean NO.   I graciously turned down her original; offer, but she kept hounding me about it, and when I didn't respond, just went ahead and ordered the damned items.

I love those two Hammers, too, and the color cinematography has a lot to do with it. Brides, especially, is known for its purples and lavenders, deep focus, and overall splendor.

About fifteen years ago I saw Brides at a weekend long horror festival at the wonderful Lafayette Theater in Suffern, NY. They were all film, nothing digital, and as I recall it, Universal sent them a freshly made print of that one. It was expertly projected, as always, by Peter A. whose last name I always have to look up to know I’m spelling it correctly, and the audience ate it up.

Years later, my impression of the Region B Blu-ray was that it faithfully portrays all of that, but it’s unfortunately cropped to an extreme aspect ratio as was done on a few of those films, and it’s totally obvious that the bottom of the frame in particular is chopped off. But I found everything else about the image so good that I’ll still watch that over anything else.

I’m amazed that BK never saw that one! Looking forward to his impressions.

I have only seen Carry On Screaming, and it was so long ago I barely remember anything about it. Would love to see that again sometime, and see Cleo which sounds like great fun.

I appreciate her advice and offer - she's been through kidney surgery - and I am grateful for her generosity.  I would prefer the advice rsather more than the expenditure.

I would ask how she used them.  You might just have to leave them on your bed all the time until you are healed, and that might be her plan.
