Topic of the Day:  I don't know if I have a favorite biblical movie...I'm not biblical, at all ;)

My sister's not religious either, but she used to really like the movie Ben-Hur, with Charlton Heston.

Otherwise, I'd say Dogma for my choice. :D

I haven't seen it since it first came out, but I remember that I really liked it.

It was a strange night of dreams.  In the first I had gone to Goodspeed to catch the final performance of something I had orchestrated, s show about Rodgers & Hart, and then Goodspeed was closing for the pandemic.  No one in the dream wore masks.  Then I went backstage where they were striking the set spoke ro the conductor and the band, and I remembered I had to call a friend in New York,  That took several tries since I did not have the phone numbers I needed and I had to ask the conductor for help.  The last part of ther dream were my concerns about getting back to New York.

In the second, I was watching a performance of Jubilee, and a flautist walked out of the pit,  her flute was on fire and she carried it to the lobby and put it on the floor and we poured water on it.  I asked her about how badly her hands were burned.

The flute player in the dream was one of the violinists in the City Center Encores! orchestra.

I hate these lab work days.  I cannot eat until they are over, and I'm dying for some coffee.

I really like that flautist dream.

My one (irritating) dream defies description, even for my own edification. A complete waste of dream time, if you ask my opinion. And I believe you did.

I mercilessly lump all Biblical movies into the category "Biblical Kitsch" because most of them are so delightfully Hollywoodishly and inappropriately cast and played. Was I just moved to string three adverbs together? Why yes, I believe I was. Also note the use of an additional one earlier in the sentence.

As a kid I seriously loved King of Kings, for many reasons but not least of all its score. I got that MGM box set with the record and the hardcover program book and wore that sucker out. As a family we dutifully watched The Ten Commandments when it was shown on TV, and I believe we went to see it once at a drive-in. I think those were the big two for us when I was growing up.

As an adult, I tend to watch these around the Easter season because, you know, that's generally the season for them. I don't do it out of any particular reverence for anything except my enjoyment of a genre and style of filmmaking. Each of them has its points of interest. One exception, a film I have never been able to get through more than about ten minutes of, is The Greatest Story Ever Told. I find it the most (watch out, more adverbs on the way!) lugubriously paced, deadly boring motion picture ever.

My favorite Biblical films are Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew, Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth, and King of Kings.  I knew they were kitsch when I saw them as a kid, but I loved The Prodigal with Lana Turner leading the Prodigal Son astray and deMille's Samson and Delilah.

I’m not a fan of the stolid, sanctimonious nature of many biblical epics. Too many don’t seem, well, all that biblical. Or lifelike. Pasolini’s Gospel According to St. Matthew and The Last Temptation of Christ are both intriguing. I also enjoyed Jeremy Sisto’s performance in the miniseries Jesus. Then there’s Monty Python’s Life of Brian, which is cheeky.

Theological films are another matter. Babette’s Feast and The Decalogue are way up on my list, along with The Seventh Seal and Au Hasard Balthazar. Wings of Desire and A Serious Man are both worth a second look.

I’ve never seen Gospel According to St. Matthew, but someone gave me an imported copy they bought in error, so that will be in the coming year’s lineup.

Yes, theological films are a different kettle of fish. And I still need to get into The Decalogue.

T.O.D.

Don't get the wrong idea.  I am definitely not an Atheist

However, I find all Biblical movies to be boring.

Can't recall any that I really liked.

Thursday afternoon greetings!  This morning I finished reading THE LIONS OF FIFTH AVENUE, Fiona Davis's latest novel.  It's set in the New York Public Library and I loved it.  Between that, making some phone calls about gifts for Charlotte, and doing my ankle therapy, I'm still not dressed but feel very accomplished.

DR Elmore, you can have black coffee before blood work. It's a diuretic, so don't over do it. Drink plenty of water to plump up your veins, though.
