Well, you've read the notes, the notes did an interpretive dance to the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the interpretive dancing cows come home.

One of the best fringe benefits of HHW membership is learning about all sorts of intriguing films, books, and music that I otherwise might not know about.  Thank you to everyone for sharing your interests.

TOD: Many people don't know that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's song, "The Music of the Night," was originally written about someone who ate Mexican beans for dinner.

DR George, yes, I have AC, but it costs money to run it.  There's no reason - beyond the fact that a truly neurotic woman has complained incessantly about being cold to City Housing Authority - for this building to be pumping out heat all day yesterday.  Last night, when the heat was off, temperatures went down to the low 40s and it was great for sleeping.

This morning I must step out and do some banking. I have no urge to do this.

This BBC Diary of Anne Frank is not the play.  I watched the first hour of it.  The series begins in the Frank's affluent Amsterdam home as plans are laid and she is given the diary. The first episode ends with the Van Daan's moving into the annex and the second ends with the arrival of Dr Dussel. The screenplay and cast are quite good, and Mrs Van Daan is thoroughly obnoxious.  I had forgotten that Peter Van Daan brought his cat along.  My only complaint is that much of the picture is very dark, most likely to convey the limited lighting in the annex.

I'll finish it tonight.

In the late 1980s, Michael Tilson Thomas gave me as a thank you gift the complete revised critical edition of the Anne Frank diary.  I need to dig it out.  I had read the original published version when I was in high school.

Anne Frank was a high school read for me, too. This is making me want to read it now as an adult, and that BBC production sounds intriguing.

I have too many wonderful Mexican meals under my belt — uh, literally — to remember. Some were certainly at nice places where I was very glad that someone else was picking up the tab. But most were at more typical jernts, and some of the most delicious were at mom and pop places.

Just to pick something almost at random from that great middle ground in L.A., a meal at Antonio’s on Melrose in the 1980s would be heaven right about now.

Many of the places I loved, great and small, are ones whose names I have forgotten.

Home specialties are guacamole (which as it happens I must make today because we have several avocados that are ready) and quesadillas. Tacos, too, but I never quite make them to my satisfaction as far as competently building either hard or soft ones, a technique yet to be mastered.

Note to self:  there’s also a chicken in the fridge to be scavenged for good quesadilla and/or taco meat.

TOD:

Mostly I make tacos but I am not sure that you could call them Mexican......

I eat at Taco Bell now and then.....but I'm not sure that meets the criteria either.

TOD:

I love Mexican food more and more as time passes. I have cooked it, but I prefer eating it out. Let somebody else do all the work. I don’t need to roast tomatoes and chiles just to make salsa. I don’t need to boil a chicken, shred it and then wrap it in a fried corn tortilla in order to make enchiladas and then make the rice, the beans, the guacamole, etc. It’s all too much for one.

I have made tamales (a family effort), corn tortillas (hours of practice), salsa, flan, chili sauces, breakfast dishes and a few others. I’ve done prep work assembling enchiladas. My favorites, though, are making main courses like shrimp or fish a la Veracruzana, using butter, capers, tomatoes and green olives in the sauce.

TOD: Mostly we go to a small family-run Mexican place for fry bread tacos. The family is very nice, and we try to support them through this pandemic. We don't go out anywhere very often, though, so I don't suppose we're doing much good.

My neighbors make tamales and sometimes bring me some. You need a real abuela to make good tamales.

I have run my errands and survived.  My first taxi driver never even started the meter for the four-block ride, and so I get a free ride to the bank.  It was really kind of him. I posted my bills, took care of part of my banking; the office I needed to get some money from my IRA was not open, so that was a dud. The taxi driver back was really kind and helpful with my walker, and then - surprise of surprises! - when I got to the front door of the building, the Man with the Bike kindly held the door for me.

During my BK recording days in the 1990s, there was a wonderful Mexican place called Rosa's at 48th Street and Eighth Avenue.  I really miss it, but I'm very fond of La Cucina, which is where DRs Ginny, ChasSmith, vixmom, and others went after Desperate Measures. I still mourn Cafe Frida, which had the absolute best guacamole.
