Last night we finished watching the BBC Diary of Anne Frank, and its devastating ending. I am still curious as to why the Van Pels' last name was changed to Van Daan, but I think Anne changed their names in the diary. The BBC version does end with the eight persons in the Secret Annex being led away by the Germans, and as each walks down the steps the picture freezes on them and a subtitle gives the information on what became of them after the arrest. It's as horrendous an ending as that in Au Revoir, Les Enfants or the girls in white dresses dancing among the graves of the World War One dead at the end of Oh, What A Lovely War!
