Last night we finished watching the BBC Diary of Anne Frank, and its devastating ending. I am still curious as to why the Van Pels' last name was changed to Van Daan, but I think Anne changed their names in the diary.  The  BBC version does end with the eight persons in the Secret Annex being led away by the Germans, and as each walks down the steps the picture freezes on them and a subtitle gives the information on what became of them after the arrest. It's as horrendous an ending as that in Au Revoir, Les Enfants or the girls in white dresses dancing among the graves of the World War One dead at the end of Oh, What A Lovely War!

I just reviewed the liner notes in the 1955 Amahl and the Night Visitors DVD, and am reminded that the 1964 version was hated by Menotti, which I suppose is the main reason it's never been released. I must learn more about that.

What a day!  Already!

I decided I wanted to do my weekly shopping, but I forgot that this is also a day that other OLD PEOPLE get their Social Security $$$.

So it was traffic and crowds.....lots of folks in the driving carts blocking the aisles, lots of folks standing in the aisles texting and talking on their phones......etc etc etc.

I loved SPECTACULARS on TV.

My favorites:

Peter Pan - although I never could figure out why that ugly old woman was playing Peter

Julie & Carol and Carnegie Hall

Once Upon a Mattress

Aladdin with Sal Mineo

Years ago there was a horse-drawn ice wagon driving down the street.  The man was yelling:  "Ice.  Get your ice.....ice!"   A lady called down for some and he ran up the steps with it.

Another man was walking by and he heard the horse say: "What a life."

The man was shocked and he turned and asked:  "What did you say?"

The horse replied:  "I said 'what a life.'  Every day Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until dark I pull this damned heavy wagon all over town.  On Saturday and Sunday he takes me to the park and I have to give rides to kids from 10 a.m. until dark.  That's why I say 'What a life.'"

The man asked:  "Does he know you can talk?"

And the horse said: "No.  And don't you tell him either else I have to holler 'Ice!'"

We got our first snow overnight. Although very little. Just a bit on the lawns (less than 1 cm). Normally I would not be too happy. But starting Thursday it is supposed to be 60F for 6 days. So I am extra happy about that as I will be able to bike again.

I began looking online for pill cutters last year when we had to break large ones up for Poe's thyroid prescription. As it happened, Nathan, who had once had a job as am assistant in a medical office, looked at them and said he could break them just fine by hand...and he was right. Of course, being able to do that depends on the size and makeup of the pill itself.

I did wonder how well the cutters are able to split the pill without splintering it.

I can't recal a pill ever splintering.  Some pills are easy to break by hand while others need the pill cutter.

TOD: Cinderella -- the one with Lesley Ann Warren

This was the version on when I was young. Some DVDs I’ve seen from before that I would include:

Aladdin
Best Foot Forward
Calamity Jane with Carol Burnett
The original Cinderella
Dearest Enemy
Kiss Me, Kate with Drake and Morison
One Touch of Venus

I believe it's on youTube. Maybe under s Menotti Foudation channel or something like that?

As I recall, Yours, Anne, the musical version of the diary ends the same way. Silently. Devastatingly.

I've loved the TV recording for years, but I still have never seen that production of Wonderful Town. It seems like I know it's available. Is that correct?

Bootlegs of it have been on several bootleg Opera DVD sites.

That’s where I got mine. Sidney Chaplin was particularly good support for Russell, who is outstanding.

Here ya go! I met Kurt Yaghjian in 1973.  He was a very nice man who is in the film Jesus Christ Superstar. His father was a Cincinnati Symphony conductor with Max Rudolf.

None of the recent live shows deserves to be on the list. Most were dreadful.
