Just finished a good novel called Memorial. The writer, Bryan Washington, is from Houston. His collection of short stories, Lot, was recommended by Obama and a good recommendation it was.

Memorial is about a Black Houstonian, Ben, and his Japanese lover, Mike. When Mike's mother arrives, Mike returns to Japan where his father is dying. Both men have to deal with their new normal, Mike with his obstreperous dad and Ben with Mike's mother, who has moved in for the time being. Funny, sad, wise.

One of the first friends I made when I moved to Virginia was Mitt Murray, a thirty-something gay male from Delaware. When Mitt learned that I knew very few people there he suggested I meet his parents, who knew tons of people. I did so, and we became friends in our own right. One day when I was visiting them in Delaware we attended a sort of county fair at one of the local colleges. Mitt's dad said, "Ah! Joe's here." Mitt's mom said, "We'll introduce you." A few minutes later a man walked up to us and the three of them were very friendly. Mitt's parents then introduced me to Senator Joe Biden. We all chatted for a while, then Joe left to say hello to some other people.

Joe Biden is one of the most personable people I've ever met. After chatting with him for a few minutes I felt I'd known him all my life. Delaware is a small state and if you are interested in politics it is very easy to get to know the players.

Mitt's parents were so accepting and welcoming of all of Mitt's friends. If you were a friend of Mitt's you were welcome anytime. I'd never experienced any people who were so friendly and accepting. It was so clearly important to many of Mitt's gay friends who hadn't found acceptance at home.

Mitt's parents and I stayed in touch. Several years later I'd just returned home to Virginia after my father's death here in California to learn that Mitt had passed away of AIDS. I'd been so busy taking care of my dad that I hadn't heard that Mitt was ill. It was such a shock.

During the following years some of us would get together with Mitt's parents. They loved to see us and talk to us; it was like a lifeline to their beloved son. They're gone now, too, and I do miss them. Today I'm saying a little prayer to the three of them and celebrating what they didn't live to see: Joe Biden's victory.
