Last night we watched I Remember Mama, which I've never before seen. I remember vaguely a high school production maybe 60 years ago and Peggy Wood's TV series, and I've read both Kathryn Forbes' book Mama's Bank Account and John Van Druten's play, which was published in a Pocket Books edition titled something like "Three Comedies of American Family Life," including Life With Father and You Can't Take It With You. I must have read that book 20-30 times in the 1960s and 70s.

Irene Dunne is so damned wonderful as Mama, but I also loved Oscar Homolka as Uncle Chris and Florence Bates as a successful writer, but the whole cast is amazing. Rudy Vallee and Edgar Bergen in serious roles? Yep, and I would never have guessed who they were. The film is beautifully directed, but I think it needs a good restoration. Criterion, where are yopu?

That's great, but how does it compare to the musical??

I never saw the musical although I have heard the CD. It's my opinion from the CD that there is too much lost in the telling. It's a play full of incidents. Did you know that Rodgers & Hammerstein produced the original Broadway production of I Remember Mama or that the playwright John Van Druten directed the original production of The King & I?

I did know Rodgers & Hammerstein produced the original Broadway production of I Remember Mama, but I didn't know about John Van Druten.

Never locked myself out, but thought I did.  I returned from a trip to London and thought my keys were in the larger of 2 carry-on bags,  which was put on the next day's flight.  Before we left London airline employees told us that would happen and I put my keys in my smaller carry-on.   Well, when I arrived in Baltimore (about 40 or so miles from my place)  I had forgotten what I had done.   I asked my friend who had picked me up at the airport if I could stay over night.   I also needed a ride back to the airport the next day.  He agreed.   Went back to the airport the next day.  Checked my bag ---no keys.  Then I remembered what had happened.  I think my friend took the news surprisingly well.

George. I apologize that last night I told you that Kroeger Foods (Fred Meyers, QFC) stopped the requirement for wearing masks.  This is true, except in Washington State!

DR George, at Costco did people need to show proof of having been vaccinated?

I didn't notice anything saying that proof was needed.

the gym doesn't require proof either.  At least half of the people there were not wearing masks today.

I was surprised that every other treadmill is not marked off not to use anymore.  Keith said the cross trainers still had every other one marked not to use.

I am currently reading Featherhood: A Memoir of Two Fathers and a Magpie by Charlie Gilmour.  I think all you bird lovers here would appreciate it.

Well, that was a short-lived experiment.

I couldn't figure out how to work the controls!  I couldn't get the resistance level up to a reasonable amount, so the whole thing was pointless.

I'll research the model online to see what I can find about how to work the darned thing.
