She thought that this seemed a little too disjointed with scenes going back and forth (or something like that), but when your group of lead actors split up, then you have to tell both stories...by going back and forth.

A bit of a spoiler here (but not really): at the beginning of this new movie, it's a flashback to when the aliens arrived on Earth, but it's different than what was shown in the first movie.
