The heat wave continues, though today we might have it a few degrees lower than yesterday. Yesterday was a hot and humid slice of hell. Tomorrow night is when the real break comes and we should be having "nice" weather for a while.

And the word of the day is: SCHWA!

Do people even know what this word is anymore?  I remember learning the word in school, but is it even still taught?

I never learned the word in school. It's only in recent years that I saw it referred to somewhere and had to look up what it meant.

I like to go to Dairy Queen and get a LARGE vanilla ice cream cone dipped in butterscotch.

The whole corporate move to using initials is something I often find very annoying. Not always. I mean, we grew up with them ourselves and good old IBM, AT&T, TRW and others seem fine to us.

What annoys are those who I honestly believe are doing it in an attempt to look "cool" and stay relevant to younger people.

Here's one I find absurd, which is probably not geared so much to the young but is probably desperately trying to stay relevant: WW. So now "Weight Watchers" can be cool. And you don't even have to say those shameful words. Never mind that it's actually easier to say "Weight Watchers" than "WW". Those happy WWers should make haste to the nearest KFC and DQ and live it up a little.

I never got anything but dairy products there, either, except when on a long road trip, because it can make a good rest stop to pull into one and have something a little more like a meal. I've probably had a cheeseburger and fries there, but I don't recall much else. Fortunately, I also don't recall those items being particularly disappointing.

Our local DQ (and what is it with all these corporate franchises losing words and just going to initials?) is staffed by unruly, undisciplined teenagers. At least, the last time I checked (several years ago, now). It made the entire experience extremely disagreeable.

But can you get cherry dipped cones where you live? They don’t sell them in Texas.

When I lived in Ohio, I would never think of going to DQ for a meal, only strawberry shakes and dilly bars.

That would pretty much describe my experience with them in Ohio, and even Florida. We actually went to any such ice cream place, didn't have to be a Dairy Queen, and it was always for just that -- ice cream and shakes and such.

I have to remember to try a few Sparking Ices next time I'm shopping. That is, if it's a national thing that's sold here. I haven't investigated. But if DR singdaw has them, too, we all probably do.

Tuesday morning greetings!  The heat, humidity, and cicadas continue to keep us inside.

I could sure use a strawberry shake right now!

Well, DR Elmore, Middletown has a spiffy new DQ and we could go there together!

That's what I plan to have when we make our first visit there sometime soon!  Maybe not a LARGE, though...

Speaking of DQ, when my niece was a toddler my sister and her husband lived in a small house that belonged to his grandmother.  There was a Dairy Queen at the corner of their block and Laura and I would walk there for ice cream when I was babysitting.  She's retired now and in the process of moving to Florida.

The first such ice cream place in my memory was a non-DQ one at the corner of East Main St. and Yearling Rd. in Whitehall, a then-new suburb of Columbus. We had moved to a new house (costing $12k) just off of Yearling when I was around five, and visits to that ice cream jernt were a treat.

The Dairy Queens and other fast food places I most love to find are those that still have their original building and signage. There's not a lot of that left, but I loved finding a Dairy Queen like that on Route 4 (I think it is) a few years ago in Cincinnati, a little south of Springdale. I've seen one or two others in Ohio, too, somewhere...

I might have to eat those words. Thursday will be better, but it looks more like Thursday evening that the real break in this will happen.

DR ChasSmith - Sparling Ice drinks may be available around these parts in stores; I don't know. I ordered mine from Amazon.

For anyone that likes soda, but wants to stop drinking soda, I'd highly recommend them. Infinitely healthier. But of course, plain or sparkling water is even better for you than that.

Do you remember where Grand and Roosevelt come together in that peculiar intersection?  It's near there.
