My outrage du jour was this:
In May I paid the New Yorker $6 for a 3-month trial subscription and a cute tote bag. In June I received an email from them stating that the trial would end in August and, in essence, if I wished to cancel I needed to do so by Aug 16. Today they billed me $99 for the coming year. I had pretty much planned to cancel, but I did expect to have until Aug 16 to do so. I phoned and a polite woman told me that this was customary as they needed time to prepare the mailing labels and the newsletter. What?! It's a digital subscription! She agreed to reverse the charges, but what sort of customer service is this? It was not a given that I would subscribe and I certainly will not now. Honestly!
