TOD

I don't know that there was any NYE I'd call weird, but I've had several uniquely memorable ones.

In 1979 I was visiting my California friends on their 52-foot sailboat in Cabo San Lucas during the Christmas/New Year's week, and during the following year's holidays I had just joined the crew of that very boat while it was in Cozumel. (I spent about six months on it.)

For two consecutive years in the early-mid 1990s I spent NYE in a tux on the east mezzanine in Grand Central Terminal where friends who ran a New York BBS were demonstrating early internet communications and functions at a bank of computers. Guests mostly consisted of those attending the grand ball on the main floor.

So many recipes on the Internet filling my timeline! The most recent ones to catch my eye were a savory galette with roasted beets and sweet potatoes, and a mozzarella-stuffed rosemary pretzel.

Wow, what an amazing experience it must have been to live on a sailboat.

Keith is ready to tell the window guys not to come today.  After I skipped the gym, I said at least let them do one window.  They won't be able to return until February.

We never did New Year's Eve when I was a kid.

My DH doesn't do New Year's Eve.

So other than sending the kids out with pots and spoons to the edge of our property to make noise near the mean neighbor's window, we have really never done anything.

The year we turned to 2000, my sister and I took my son to the party in Tempe to hear a local band play. He was mortified to be seen with us but glad to get to go. My sister and I thought it was noisy, cold, and crowded and couldn't wait to go home.

Well, that's not quite all true.

Our church did a Soup Tasting Party on New Year's Eve. So we'd gather and eat soup until around 9 p.m.  It go to where no one would drive at night, so now we do it the Sunday after New Year's, when we take the Christmas decorations down from the sanctuary.

I expect that Wae-Ling will go to my daughter's house tomorrow and spend New Year's Eve there.

I plan on spending New Year's Day baking a couple dozen bread bowls and making soup for Sunday.

I will make a Cherpumple for Sunday, also. I'll bake the pie/cakes here and take them to the church to be assembled on Sunday morning.

A Cherpumple, once assembled, cannot be moved.

That should be the title of somebody's next novel.

Will Wae-Ling spend the night?  I think it is great they are so close.

It is a very dark and stormy day here in Johnston SC.

When I went to the post office, I considered continuing on to Aiken and Sam's Club but decided I wasn't in the mood.  That was about 10:45 a.m.

At 1 p.m., I decided I had to go to Sam's Club.  That was it.  I HAD to go.  There were salads there I wanted to munch on over the weekend.  And there was ice cream, and a wonderful Fried Pickle and Garlic Dip, and other delights I had not originally considered.  Truth: I wanted four things.

I left with 17 items.

Ah, well.

But...I am warm and dry inside my house.  Mine, all mine.

And I am prepping some French onion soup for a late-afternoon/early-evening meal.

Retirement is so challenging.

One of the painters is singing from O Fortuna.

And I stayed home for nothing today.  They stopped by a little after one and said it was too late.  It was nice of them to stop and tell us, still.....

I'm up, I'm up - nine and a half hours of sleep - didn't intend to sleep quite this long.
