Ordered the simplest warm steam vaporizer from Amazon. Will be here today after two. I almost got the personal steamer and if the one I got isn't to my liking I'll return it and get the personal one where you put your face right into a face holder thing.

I slept better the night before, but I was out of bed by 5:45, dealt with some computer issues, and fed the cats.

My balance sucks this morning. While I was making my coffee, I lost my balance. I didn't fall but I dropped the jar of coffee creamer. Only a few minutes before, I felt I was losing my balance but things were fine. Getting old sucks, but getting really old is worse.

TOD
In summer 1999, while I was working at Barnes & Noble, I tried to step over one of those velvet rope thingies used to control lines of customers. My left didn't lift high enough, and the contraption and I ended up in a mess on the floor. The next day I asked the manager - my beloved Patty Spettell - to have lnch because I needed to have a serious discussion with her. At lunch, I told her I was having serious physical issues and the fall the day before was the first really serious one. I had been having occasional days where I would walk and stumble because my left leg wouldn't lift off the floor and my left hand would go numb. I had seen my doctor at the time, an elderly moron assigned by my HMO who was just waiting out the days to retirement, and I now suspect after all his misdiagnoses that he was an incompetent fool.

Patty was great; she told me she would be completely supportive: did I need another employee to walk me home? did I need yime off? were there any tasks I could not do? I told her I jsut wanted to keep her abreast of the situation, and I continued to do work without any aid at the store. Meanwhile I spent the summer enduring numerous tests that imbecile doctor sent me to: X-rays, a terrible test where a technician hooked me up to a machine where I was stuck with a sharp needle all over my arms while the technician was a monitor. No diagnosis was set and my condition worsened. I got to the point where I could not hold a pen or pencil and I had to turn down work. I lied and said I was too busy to take on another job. I was terrified the word of my infirmity would get out and I would never work again. This is why I've never wrked with Patti LuPone; I missed my chance.

Janet Watson, wife of Tom Jones (of The Fantasticks) sent me to her chiropractor thinking I needed an adjustment, so I began seeing him once a week. He thought I needed an MRI, but the imbecile doctor sent me instead for more tests. Finally, on a Sunday morning in late September or early October, I went down to Union Square and had an MRI, and the results in: two crushed discs in my neck. This explained why, when I ate something, my esophagus expanded, huit the discs, and my left leg kicked. I still needed my idiot doctor and HMO to approve surgery. I had to go to London two weeks before Thanksgiving to attend rehearsa;s and performances for the BBC broadcast of Jubilee, and my condition worsened. I hope there would be a surgery approval by the time I returned. Well, there wasn't. When the taxi let me out at my apartment the Monday befre Thanksgiving, I dragged myself, my suit bag, and my bag of scores into the foyer of my building, took the first step up to the lobby, and fell up the stairs. Steve, the super at the time, was cleaning the lobby floor. He came over picked my bags in one hand, me in the other, and got me to the elevator and into my apartment.

Two days later, the appointment with a surgeon was approved, and I was him the Monday after Thanksgiving. He looked at the MRI scans, and said, "I leave for Christmas vacation in another week, and this can't wait. I could do this on Dec. 10." And he did. When I came out of surgery and was in recovery, Janet Watso, who lied and told the staff she was my sister, was waiting for me when I woke. On Sunday morning, Dec. 12, I was released. I had to wear one of those padded collars around my neck for six(?) weeks. Beginning in January, I had several months of physical and hand therapy.
