My initial reaction is that it was either Peyton Place or Lady Chatterley's Lover, both of which I read behind my parents; backs. Googling both titles, it had to be Peyton Place, since Lady Chatterley, which was a slog to get through, wasn't published in the US until 1959 or 1960. I still remember the Dell paperback cover.

There’s a difference between adult novels and novels for adults, IMO. I don’t think Agatha Christie and Erle Stanley Gardner wrote for kids, and I devoured their books in the fifth grade. Seventh grade was when I read such books as The Godfather, The Exorcist and a few others that a neighbor loaned me. Eighth grade brought Six Days of the Condor with some graphic sex scenes. That book was available through the Scholastic Book Club.
