THRILLERS WITHOUT THRILLS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no thrills, and now it is time for you to post until the non-thrilling cows come home.

Last night I watched on Netflix The Thursday Murder Club, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a nice tonic, after my aches, pains,  pissing and moaning about my health, to watch a wonderful group of actors in my age group, led by Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley, solving a mystery. I'll be watching it again.

So, today is laundry day, which should take up most of the morning. Then my friend Jim Vivyan is coming by. Now retired, he used to work for Random House, and he was one of the first friends to urge me to get a publisher for Anabelle & Thatch. I haven't seem him in years, so I'm looking forward to a nice visit.

Unlike the "thrillers", Truffaut's The Soft Skin certainly wasn't dreadful. I had no idea what this one was, and what a wonderful discovery. After seeing it, I watched the supplemental features (there's also a commentary which I'll listen to another time), which all relate to Hitchcock and his influence on Truffaut. I'd identified a couple of direct influences in the film, but there's more than I saw the first time, and of course he has a whole history relating to Hitchcock. What I really really wish is that they had filmed at least a few bits of their actual interviews for the Hitchcock/Truffaut book. Hearing excerpts of the tape recordings is wonderful, but a little bit of film there would have been icing on the cake.

Tuesday.....but I think it's Monday.

My DVD of THE ACCUSED is out for delivery....this is the 1949 thriller starring Loretta Young and Douglas Dick.....not the Jodi Foster movie.

I couldn't name a single one of these writers, like 'em or not. I might recognize a name that someone else posts, but no guarantees.

I recently read The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. It was OK; not great.

Mickey 17 was a disaster on the way out, so I watched a documentary on The Beach Boys on the way back. Starts off great with archival and modern interview footage from actual Beach Boys and their family members. I was admiring that fact when midway through we start getting the opinions of a few 30-something random people. Was downhill from there.
