TOD

Two (2! count 'em!) more Truffauts to report!

Two nights ago I rewatched Mississippi Mermaid (La sirčne du Mississipi). I had watched it for my first time not that long ago, but I needed to repeat it after having now seen these several others. I also find it a bit of an odd one in terms of story, and I already didn't recall certain critical things about it. So it's a good thing I pulled it out because now I simply had more context for it in his oeuvre. Antoine Duhamel is the composer, and the score has a different feel from those of Delerue but is perfectly effective in this different kind of picture. I keep saying "different". I'm really glad there's a Nick Redman & Julie Kirgo commentary because I'm craving their perspective on this one.

Then last night it was time for the last Truffaut disc in my collection, The Bride Wore Black. I hadn't seen it since first getting the Twilight Time Blu-ray, however long ago that was. At least a decade? But somehow I had missed EVER seeing it back in the day, so I had only seen it that one time prior to last night. I find that incredible, when I had "known" or known of it since not long after it had been made. But what I really knew all those years was Bernard Herrmann's music.

When I watched it that one time a decade ago, I liked it, but I didn't love it like I do now. I think it's stupendous, everything about it, and the Herrmann score is fantastic. After watching, I checked out the first five minutes of commentary - again, Nick & Julie, thank God, along with Herrmann's biographer Steven Smith - and found right off the bat that there had been some surprising disagreements between Truffaut, the cinematographer whose name I'm blanking on, and Herrmann, as far as how the final film came out. I thought it came out wonderfully in all respects, but again I look forward to hearing these people's knowledge and thoughts on all of it.

The only other Truffaut disc I own that I haven't watched in this li'l retrospective is Fahrenheit 451 which I'm so familiar with I won't watch it again right now. I'm missing just a few well-known films of his - The Last Metro is one - and since I'm just watching my own physical media this time around, I will catch up with those later.

I would also like to lessen the world's tensions by assuring everyone that I haven't left my Beach Party double-features behind.

I didn't feel like watching one after Mississippi Mermaid, but I returned to them last night with Beach Blanket Bingo which I enjoyed much more than Bikini Beach a few nights prior and found irritating for whatever reason. And I'm no expert on Beach Party history, but I was surprised to find Candy Johnson and one or two other regulars not in this one. Are they out of the series now? I'm not cheating by looking ahead, I'll just keep watching. The only movies I have are the eight in the "Frankie & Annette" box set of DVDs, so I had to skip Pajama Party which isn't included. Up next is Ski Party which will probably be tonight.

Yes DR CHAS SMITH Miss Candy only appeared in the first four of the beach pictures. She moved on in her singing career, opened a short lived nightclub in NYC,

Johnson died on October 20, 2012.[1] Her cremated remains, along with those of her sister Gayle, were sent to outer space in 2013 by the Houston-based space burial firm Celestis.[13]

I always liked Mississippi Mermaid, which I saw when it came out, as I saw all Truffaut back then, mostly because of my love for The Soft Skin and Fahrenheit 451 - the latter has one of the most shameful Blu-ray transfers ever.

I liked Pajama Party because Annette is paired with Tommy Kirk and they probably my favorite duet of the series "There Has To Be A Reason" - a close second Frankie & Annette 'I Think, You Think" from BBB.

Have you seen the later "reunion" movie 1987's BACK TO THE BEACH?

I saw it in the movie theater the weekend it came out, and had such a great time.

Well this is a revolting development. I went to Burger King to get my monthly Family Bundle with my coupon, expiring tomorrow.

AND the BK at my end of town is closed for remodeling - how rude! And I didn't want to drive seven miles north to the other location.

DR FREDDIE I loved BTTB as well...lots of fun.

But Miss Annette was certainly beginning to show the effects of her MS.

And I love the story she told in her book. She would be out with her husband and friends - having a drink and smoking a Lark cigarette. Someone would always stop at the table and say: "Why, Annette, I didn't know you smoked and drank."

And she would always reply: "I also have three children, guess what else I do?"
