I'm very sleepy after a restless night. The cats were fine. I had a hard time getting to sleep, and then I was up too many times. I'll blame the pasta dinner; I think it contained too much salt.

Today Doug Fulington and I will work some more on the Kay Swift ballet. I think we'll finish it tomorrow.

Last night I watched on Netflix the first two episodes of The House of Guinness, based - I think - on this book. I'm not sure if I will finish all 7 or 8 parts; it's nicely photographed, the design for 1868 is quite good, the cast of Irish and British actors is excellent, but the storytelling in episode ome was sloppy in introducing the characters, and the musical score is dreadful. When there's live music on film, we get 19th cetury music, but for dramatic scenes and montages, we get pounding rock songs and other noise from 2024 that take the viewer completely out of 1868.

BK, I am looking at the track listing for the Manze pastoral album (2025), but I don't see anything by John Rutter listed. Weird.

An interesting, and ultimately sad, summary of Franklin Schaffner's career.

The great films of his are really great, no question about it, and I'm glad the world has those.

And, more crucially, does the job offer the option for health insurance?

I think our overnight low was mid-to-high 50s, and too muggy, which it's been again for several days.

Big change today, though. We've got a couple of hours of solid but nice rain, and the highs today will be in the upper 60s. We absolutely needed the rain. (Sorry, DR Laura.)

But wait, there's more! Tomorrow's high will be just around 60. It will definitely feel like fall. I'm just hopeful that the South will keep their damned air down there where it belongs, and that the mugginess will indeed be alleviated.

The schools are booking musicians early this year. A month ago I picked up my first spring show, Sister Act, and yesterday, Chicago (Teen Edition) landed in my inbox.

I've never played the former, so becoming familiar with that one will be a good thing. The latter, however... Oy! It will be my fourth time in four years playing that damned teen edition. Every time I do it, I think less of that version and less of the schools and audiences who embrace it. The sanitizing of the material, from the huge cuts in script and score to the incredibly lame substitutions for language and situations, make it a chore to sit through while biting my tongue. It must be a sure-fire seller, is all I can think. But I just don't get it.

Will I have fun playing it, though? Absolutely. Great music that's a challenge. Every time I do it it's like re-learning it, getting my fingers back into shape for it and working the tough passages daily. I've played both piano books and I'll be back on Piano 1 this time around. That's good because it has more to play, AND doesn't have the accordion part which many of us have to play on synth. I'm hopeful we'll get one of the people around here who plays the real thing. The scary thing is that the piano books in the full version of the show, while much the same as these, given what's included, have so much more challenging music - and I've never played that one.

That's down from the usual 60 or so we used to get.
