Amazon Prime is showing a ton of scary movies for Halloween. Last night I watched Desi Arnaz Jr in House of Long Shadows, with Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, John Carradine, and Richard Todd. The screenplay was based on George M. Cohan's 1913 comedy-thriller Seven Keys to Baldpate.
Between 1900 and the 1930s there were a lot of "comedy-thrillers." Famouse ones include The Thirteenth Chair. The Bat, The Cat and the Canary, The Ghost Train, and The Gorilla. I think they're quite wonderful, especially The Cat and the Canary, which was made into a wonderful Bob Hope movie, and I think they deserve to be seen in productions as stylish as the Frank Langella revival of the 1927 comedy-thriller Dracula.
