I keep writing The Invention of Sound - the name of the movie is actually The History of Sound.

I liked it.....

just learned that my friend, lighting designer Alan Blacher, died on Thursday from Parkinson's Disease. I'd known Alan for 46 years; he was the husband of my friend Peter Clem, with whom I'd done summer theatre in 1971. Alan worked as a lighting designer for All My Children for years. They retired and left Manhattan around 10 years ago, and when we said goodbye, I couldn't believe how badly the disease had hit Alan. Ths photo is from 2023. Alan is on the right.

We had a family phrase meant to keep us in line at supper: “Sing at the table, cry in your sleep.”

Seems a bit harsh now.

Is that a similar concept to "Don't cry out loud, just keep it inside, and learn how to hide your feelings"

Yes, except just at the table. Crying aloud elsewhere was sanctioned, though not celebrated.

I am writing a new hymn verse for the DH's choir to sing on Christmas Eve.

Nice.

Made a wholly different type of grape pie. It’s like a vanilla pudding with grapes. The filling is good.

I actually don’t understand the business model. People either want physical media because they like that and want the info and printed content that comes with it, or they want to stream it, which anyone with a streaming service can do. Content producers can somewhat easily upload to a streaming service themselves. Does this “label” then take a share of the meager streaming royalties? Maybe ok if they’re providing promotional efforts. But do they even make the liner notes downloadable? There’s much I may be missing.

BK will (hopefully) weigh in on this!

But aren't (very roughly) 95% of all newly-recorded show CDs these days about generating interest in the show rather than about CD sales?

If at a networking event, it feels much more legitimate to hand someone a copy of your show's CD rather than a booklet or calling card with a link.

I will say on Spotify, my streaming service of choice, there is a photo of a child on a horse. Perhaps a young Larry?

That's DJ Salisbury, my co-creator. Spotify lists tge singers but nothing about the creative staff, still more than Amazon.com offered.

Much as I am quite proud of my work on the show Moonshine & Mistletoe, the recording has een a pain my my butt since Day One of the recording in April 2017. I had urged our producer then to hire BK to produce and release the recording, but he went with the lady who produces those annual Broadway shows sing carols recordings. Nice lady, but . . .

The sessions were not pleasant. Our egineer thought we were doing a bona fide bluegrass alpbum, and badmouthed loudly every one of my arrangements; the producer never told him to STFU. I hated every moment I was there. I wanted to say to him, if you pulled this on a Sondheim show, your little arrogant ass would be out of here so fast.

The producer sat on the recording for years, giving other matters a priority, and then we were suddenlt on for a 2024 release that curiously never happened, and now it's out, and I can finally comment on what hell it's been for the past 8.5 years between recording and release. I am proud of the band, the cast, and my work. I think it's a good show, and I hope it leads to performances.

Still, congratulations on such good things happening in 2024 and 2025:
in 2024, the ballet (with your being interviewed in the Times Arts & Leisure section - wow to that!) and then the credit in the Broadway GYPSY Playbill;
and in 2025, the book being released, and the CD being released.

Super Ditto to everything that Fred said, Larry! ;D

The Moonshine and Mistletoe thing was very frustrating. I did not begin last year, it began in 2022. I said I'd do it. Then people said oh but we have to edit this and we have to edit that and who should write the liner notes and on and on. I have no emails from 2023 at all. Last year, they finally got me everything we needed, but too late to get it out by Christmas. I put it all in the works a few weeks ago so we could get it out in time. No one wrote me, no one said boo about another label and let me tell you had this actually gone to booklet print and pressing CDs - well...

As I said, I'm glad it's out. If the sell some copies good on them. It was never going to be a big seller for us or a medium seller either. I would have been lucky to get the print and pressing money back. Believe me, I've been doing this for thirty-two years now, I know how it works. I did that thing called Love Quirks because they were so persistent - they paid for everything but the print and pressing. Well, how many do you suppose we've sold because I can tell you it's under thirty copies, may be under twenty. They promised lots of productions and to purchase lots of CDs at the artist's rate. They bought one box of fifty, I think. We're still very much in the hole for it.

That's really too bad.  As Sondheim wrote, "So many possibilities." :-\
