TOD: For some reason, what got stuck in my head over the years is that my first really being aware of your name and talent and such was Dinah and Her New Best Friends. But I googled that show and that wasn't until 1976, and I'm sure I was well aware of you well before that.

I slept well until 4:00 or so, when my mind started dealiong with the Zelle disaster from yesterday, and my anger and frustration with my bank. Before then, I had a long dream about working for Barnes & Noble over the Christmas season, only the store looked more lke the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts. My manager Patty Spettel was in the dream, and I had a new co-worker, Jane Emerson, who died from a brain tumor maybe ten years ago. In the dream, I kept saying to her, I was tod you were dead.

Jane Emerson was a complicated woman who had worked at the Drama Book Shop on and off in the 1970s. She came from wealth; her father was a surgeon and her mother, part of the Louis B. Mayer family tree, was the author Doris Grumbach, whose wonderful novel Chamber Music, based on the life of composer Edward MacDowell, is one of my favorite books. Jane and her husband Bob,another book shop employee, were married in the Book Shop. After they married, Jane was diagnosed with the brain tumor, and it was removed. She came back to the shop about the same time I was hired. I liked her, but she had a very prickly personality, and she had a lot of "I'm not pretty but I'm the smartest person in the room" attitude much like mine.

After I left the Book Shop in 1997, I saw her or Bob intermittently, mostly at the 82nd Street-Broadway bus stop. It was Bob who told me the tumor had returned. Around 5 years ago, someone told me that Bob had died. He was a wondddddddddddddddctor/singer whose career never took off as it should.
