Pogue and I were posting at the same time.  I totally agree - this is private stuff and I'll deal with it privately.  I suspect I will not have a response to my e-mail and that's fine.  I just have to decide what to do, that's all.  But your responses have been lovely and helpful, as always, and I appreciate them.  If we stay and we lose some folks (and I suspect who will take a hike is fairly obvious) we'll just have to survive it and take in some new folks.  It's a complex issue, and I have to have a few conversations before making the decision.  Perhaps I'll know more in the next two hours.

Sarah:  You are very wise.  There are some much older members here who could learn from you.

BK:  Mr. Pogue has the best interests of the situation in mind when he suggests keeping things private.

However, if there are things that concern you relevant to whether the board will survive or not, why not just list those things and let folks weigh in.

Well, (or WEL) I sit here totally stunned by this latest turn of events.

First of all, let me say that I never thought I would become an active member of any Internet discussion group, let alone a multiple daily poster at one.  However, when I found HHW, it was like I had found my home.  At first, I was rather shy about posting anything, and I am sure that my slightly warped sense of humor bothered several members at first, but even in those early days I never felt unwelcome or unwanted at this site.  It seemed to be an unwritten rule that anyone could express whatever opinion they wanted without fear of being insulted or humiliated.  Most people would be grateful to find that type of acceptance in any group.

Secondly, there have been angry words, hurt feelings, and miscommunications before on this site, but happily cooler heads have usually prevailed when given the advantage of time.  I would hate to think that any decision as major as shutting down this site, would be made without allowing a few days for reflection.

Finally let me say Bruce, that I, too, may have misunderstood your comments the other night.  I was under the impression that you were actually angry with Mark and the others for being away from the site.  Therefore, I can understand why Mark might have misunderstood your true feelings.  However, please whatever happened and regardless of who may leave now, or in the future, I hope you will keep this site open as a place for many good friends to gather and chat.

Netiquette is etiquette for the internet.  It's a set of universal rules:

Don't type in all caps, 'cause it's shouting (much the same way all bold-face type seems to be).

Do not repost private correspondence because it was intended only for you (there are, of course, exceptions such as when the sender of the so-called "private" post then shares it with others...at that point, it truly is "fair game").

That sort of thing...it includes prohibitions against flaming, making personal attacks on people instead of offering a different point-of-view on their opinions.  This would be like saying you favor social reform, or food stamps, or publicly funded day care and having someone then call you socialistic bleeding heart bent on running the country into the ground.

Netiquette -- it's a utopian ideal.

A few quick things as I am about to sit down and give someone a quick photoshop lesson.

C Pogue - Please know (as I know Bruce already does) that my post was in no way a means to stir any pot, nor air dirty laundry or create drams.  I posted what Mark wrote because people have been inquiring to his whereabout and even Bruce, until today had received none.

While I could have edited his entry I suppose - or just told everyone "Mark is ok" - I don't think that would have been honest and only led to more speculation. Part of the reason this site was born was to allow the truth to be told to those that would listen about the past (which there is little need to recount).  

As for this email that Bruce received, I can understand why it's upsetting. I don't feel nor think it should be "aired" in this forum.  Bruce and Mark are both adults, and as Swish has said - they will be able to solve this man to man. Of this I have little doubt.

There are real issues and arguments on both sides of this and I can only hope that both sides listen carefully to each other and come to a new understanding together.

And perhaps the past will stay in the past and a new future will emerge where everyone is on the same page (#163)

I think your fifteen second solution is genius.  It is time for BK and Mark to sit down (perhaps in a week or so when you BOTH have had time to dissect the situation) over a nice lunch with LOTS of wine and discuss what you both feel is wrong in your working relationship.

I find that e-mails are the worst possible way to resolve anything since you can't get tone down right.

Please let us not start talking about shutting down the site or finding new sponsors for Donald's show.  

Wait a while, think things over privately and come to together as the mature individuals you both are (SHOCK!  me talking about maturity of all things)

Now to dispell all feelings of ill will:

BK - I adore you and appreciate all you do to keep this site open, fun and a welcoming environment.  

Mark - You made HHW such a beautiful place and we ALL appreciate you and wish you will reconsider your actions.

Of course, if neither of you follow my suggestions, that is your right.  I just wish you would... :(

Aww, are we taking off for spelling now?  Thanks actually. I stared at it and didn't think it was right, but I'm still lumbering around in both a mental and physical fog like a bloated tick after yesterday's feast and didn't want to look it up.  Please feel free to correct any mis-spellings you find in this missive as well.  

And why would I hate you?

You're just now starting to agree with me, this paragon of sagely wisdom?  What could you possibly disagree with me on? Other than how to spell camaraderie, of course.

Bruce,

Just from my own experience with message boards...some people storm off in a temporary huff or in high dudgeon (has anyone ever stormed off in low dudgeon?) and then find out they can't live without it and return.  My opinion is those who don't want to be here are not needed.  There may be growing pains that come with loss, but as someone has already wisely mentioned, growth is the result!

Just to be really clear about the other night - most of what I was posting re the MSN thing was joking - pretty clear to me, but then I know it's hard to read "tone" sometimes.  Was there an element of seriousness?  I've already posted that there was, but it wasn't major.  Believe me, if I'm angry about something, people REALLY know it - I'm not shy.  I was just amused (in the first place) that an infrequent visitor such as our host had suddenly taken such an interest in various and sundried younger females on the site.  I'm sorry, that doesn't make me angry or "jealous", it amuses me.  The ONLY serious point I made in any of those posts (at least in MY mind - if others read more into it I've already said sorry enough) was that several of our regular night-time posters had been usurped.  That was a factual statement.  Was I hopping mad about it?  No.  Was I "jealous"?  No.  And the only reason I started having sport with it the second night (and sorry, Charlie, it WAS sport) was that every single person who'd done the MSN thing the night before all disappeared from the board list at exactly the same time, including Mr. Bakalor.  That was, in fact, hilarious to me - was it just a coincidence that all those folks disappeared at exactly the same time?  Well, that's what I'm being told and so I take it at face value, whatever the HELL that is.  I do tend to like repetition, hence the repeated use of "snarky" - as I said then, if I'm repeating the same thing hundreds of times you can assume I'm doing it humorously.  Not that anyone has to find it humorous, but that's the intent.  As soon as I thought people might have misinterpreted, I came on and apologized.  What more am I supposed to do?  I ate a burrito, does that help?

My dearest Swishy,  I would be the first to tell you that the first couple of days you were at HHW I found you totally annoying.  But then, my dear, I figured out the problem.  The problem was that I had become an old goat who was not in the habit of expecting or accepting wisdom from one that I considered to be a child.  You however, have a very rare gift.  You have the clear insight of a child, but you have the ability to express it in the most adult and delightful way.  In other words, dear Sarah, you posess the best of both worlds -- youth and age.  Once I accepted that about you, I have become one of your biggest supporters.  I always enjoy reading what you have to say, and I usually end of laughing (or at least, smiling) at your accuracy.

You can't shut down HHW!  It's my favorite website and it's even my Internet browser home page!  :'(  But ultimately, Bruce, it's your gig...and Guy Haines' too, of course.

Many others have said it more eloquently, but you have a lot of fans and friends who enjoy spending time here.  Whatever your final decision is, I'm sure that you'll take enough time to make that decision.  And whatever you do decide, you have people who support you, even if HHW is no more.

Thank you, George, and thank you everyone for your thoughts.  Many of the implications of which I speak would belie what you are saying, George, and that was why I got upset.  But, I'm seeing more clearly now and clarity is a good thing.

And on that note (C#) a burrito sounds real good right about now.  I'm going to shower (which I really need) and will venture forth into the rainy weather here in the South Puget Sound and get me a burrito with a large Diet Coke (the official HHW drink).  When I return, I'm going to watch the "Psycho Beach Party" DVD that I got on eBay.  :)

Having had the privilege to have been within the shimmering aura of BK's personal presence on several occasions I can attest to the fact that he loves to seize upon a word or phrase or an incident and make it the repetitive motif or theme of the evening, always in a humourous fashion.  A couple weeks ago at dinner, it was the phrase "have issues" and a rude woman diner that he kept suggesting that we get up en masse and thrash.  One either gets it and goes with it or they don't.  So far, my lovely wife Julieanne and I always have.

Emily, if Mark and BK get together over large amounts of wine, then I want to be there.  BK doesn't drink (...wine...A Dracula reference...only Diet Coke, so far as I know...I don't think I've even seen him drink water).  That would be a sight to behold.

Thanks, Ron, Emily, and TCB (You made me laugh :)) As much as I appreciate the comments about me being wise, and all that jazz, can it maybe stop, or be sent to me in ways other than HHW? I thank you for it it, and it's very thoughtful and funny, but it's what I like to call "Oooh-Look-At-The-Puppy! It's-So-Cute-And-Cuddly-And-Let's-Pet-It!" Syndrome. You know what I mean, it kind of SPARKS annoyances. This is NOT about me. I love you for it, though :).

BK: I know what you mean, and I'm hoping this will work out. You're both too cool to lose now, I haven't even MET you yet!

I'm going to the mall to burn cash and calories. I'm hoping to shove this "ordeal" as far from my mind as possible for the time being, and have fun with my buddies. They're staying the night, so I won't be able to get on until they leave tomorrow morning. Please don't kill each other by then, and if you do, copy all of the posts and send them to me so I can at least have a slight clue as to what went on. Thank you ever so much :).

OMG.  That is something like SEVEN grilled chicken sandwiches at Subway in one very large glass of egg-nog!!!!
