TOD:

I've never been a fan of the Star Wars films. The first Star Wars film (I'm not even sure what it's supposed to be called - what a daft idea it is to alter the title of a film) arrived late in the UK after we had heard all the hype about how great it was. I was therefore all "hyped up" when I went to see it and was fairly disappointed. I didn't think it was a terrible film but I didn't enjoy it because it seemed to be aimed at a juvenile audience. It didn't help that the cinema had lots of children present. Not that I dislike children - I simply feel that they should be in their place - that is to say, a place somewhere where I'm not.

A week after seeing Star Wars, I went to the opening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind which was more my sort of film and which was far better.

TOD: I was never much of a 'Star Wars" fan or a fan of too much science fiction with special effects I did see as being all that special. I thought back then that "Metropolis" had better special effects IMHO and it was made decades earlier. I saw the first three films, which are now the second three films, and i had no desire to see the others.

I did like that Star Wars TV special where Bea Arthur sang some Kurt Weill-type song with a Wookie or whatever it was.

Good morning, all! I had weird dreams about building houses in Ireland and evil building inspectors; it was all quite bizarre. There may have been some Darby O'Gill in it as well. No banshee, thank God!

This morning, I have a three-hour audition session for non-Equity performers to fill several spots in the Appalachian Christmas piece; the budget for this Hilton Head workshop won't accommodate a full equity cast. so we'll see what we get. I haven't seen some of the team since May, so it will be fun to be back together. When that finishes up, I've got more liner notes work.

TOD:

I thouroughly enjoyed the first two Star Wars films (A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.)  In fact, I liked each of them enough to go see twice at the movie theatre, a rarity for me.  I wasn't a FANatic--in fact, the explosion of fanaticism around the films was a turn-off for me.  But there was no denying that I was captivated by them and it was obvious to me that they were made with a great deal of love (the second movie being made with a great deal of more money, which didn't matter because it showed up on the screen.)

THE RETURN OF THE JEDI was a complete disappointment for me.  This one seemed to have been made with a great deal of love *of* money.  Overblown, under-directed and a slapped-together script.  The much dreaded Emperor turned out to be a cackling variation of the Wicked Witch of the West.  The obnoxious Ewoks clearly created for the toy market.  The climax is a repeat of the first movie.  The cast mostly just stands around between action scenes (Carrie Fisher admits that she was coked out of her mind during the entire shoot.)  Only Mark Hamil manages to do anything with his Luke character.  Just a completely sour and dissatisfying end to the trilogy...

I saw the first of the three prequels in a movie theatre and hated it from start to finish.  As BK said, the acting from most of the human cast members was non-existant.  And I cringed everytime the Jar-Jar thing appeared on the screen.  I watched the second prequel on dvd and didn't think much of it, either.  I've never seen the third.

Ben,  I'd been emailing back and forth with Francois earlier this year, but lost all that (including his address) when my hard drive had to be wiped and reinstalled.  I did have a bookmark on my old computer for the hotel where he works and it's just a few blocks from ours, so we'll try to track him down.  Wonder what I could say that would bring him back here to HHW?

TOD:

I was never a STAR WARS FAN, but I did enjoy most of the films, particularly the first two.  I liked the first one because it reminded me of the swashbucklers that Errol Flynn made, and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK was certainly the best one of the six.

The prequels were more interesting than entertaining, though I thought the second one, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, was the weakest of all because it was all CGI and no plot.

I took my three younger brothers - ages 12-16 to see the first movie at the (now defunct) Eastwood theatre.....great sound and big curved screen......

We loved it.....it was there exclusively for a LONG time and we went back once to see it again, since we missed the first few minutes the first time (the people in front of us took forever to pay for their tickets)......and then we barely found 4 seats together.....people moved for us so we could sit together.....didn't move....but just moved DOWN to empty seats.

I loved the first movie but NONE of the other ones........I have only seen TWO others before I gave up.

TOD:

I was in Naples, Italy, when "Star Wars" opened (late spring '77).   We were all made aware of this phenomenal film that brought back Saturday matinees in a BIG way...and we were all made aware of the John Williams score.

"Made aware how?" you may be asking.  Are you asking?  I'm gonna tell you:

The Stars and Stripes, the newspaper for Department of Defense personnel overseas did a reprint of The New York Times' rave review as a "double-truck" in one day's paper.  For those who don't quite understand that, it's the absolute center of the paper, and the review took up both sides of that one folded sheet of paper, complete with photos from the film.

It was quite exciting.  Also, Armed Forces Radio (which was all we had in 1977) informed us that the main theme from "Star Wars" had entered the Top 10 on the charts.  Armed Forces Radio was no slouch in keeping us abreast of all musical trends, and we were treated to many different playings of said theme throughout a day for many weeks.

Needless to say, or perhaps it bears telling, I was excited that I was going to be returning to the U.S. of A. in August 1977 where I would surely get my chance to see the film and own the recording.

As it happens, I did see the film in a theater in Greenville SC.  I saw it at the Astro II, a bi-plex next door to the Astro Lanes Bowling Center way out on the 291 By-pass.

I have to tell you I was not only underwhelmed by this small-ish screen presentation but also by the behind-the-screen sound...ALL the sound came from behind the screen.  There wasn't much to whoop or holler or even get excited about and it all seemed a bit inane to me.

I did visit my favorite record store (Carole's Record Shop on Wade Hampton Boulevard) and buy the 2-LP soundtrack, and I grew to love it very much in the two weeks I was at home before reporting for duty in Washington DC.  It was a far cry from what I heard of the score in the Astro II, however.

Once in DC, and after a week or so of settling into the office routine, the guy I was replacing (who was still there pending something or other that was delaying his departure) found out I was a movie and film music lover and demanded to know if I had seen "Star Wars."  So I told him about the Astro II experience.

He was beside himself.  I had to see it at the theater in downtown Washington he demanded.  It's 70 millimeter.  It's surround sound (or a pre-cursor of same).  He wondered if I hadn't been impressed by the special effects despite the Astro II's less-than-stellar presentation.  I told him I hadn't been at all and that it bothered me.   He wrote out instructions for me to get to that theater using public transit (my car had not arrived from Italy at that time).

So...on a Saturday morning, late, I ventured out to find this 70mm theater with superb sound that was going to change my whole love affair with movies.

I must say, the interior of that theater was impressive.  The curtains covering the screen were massive.  Surely, that screen couldn't be as large as those curtains.

It could.  It was.

For the next two hours, I was transported.  It was as if I hadn't seen the Astro II presentation.  When that first spaceship crossed the screen from the top right toward the bottom left, I stopped breathing for a few seconds.   And when that second spaceship -- that monster craft -- appeared to chase down and draw in that first spaceship my heart caught in my throat.   THOSE were some amazing special effects.

What's more...I could hear John Williams' score.  I could hear it loud...and I loved it.

I was totally a "fan", but never a "FANatic."   I later saw "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Superman" in 70mm in Washington DC theaters and they were experiences of a lifetime.  (I also saw "Damnation Alley"....woof!).

When "The Empire Strikes Back" was released, I was in Indiana...Fort Benjamin Harrison in the community of Lawrence, just north of Indianapolis.  A co-worker and I got the afternoon off of the first day of release and went to the former Cinerama theater off Pendleton Pike.   I was over the moon with that film.  Loved, loved, loved it.  One of Williams' best adventure scores.

I was much less pleased with "Return of the Jedi".  I saw the prequels on video only.  They are handsome and beautifully scored, but they lack "warmth" and some of the heart that resonated in the original film and "Empire Strikes Back"....for me.

I just learned that my former boss died of cancer at 7:15 this morning.  He was 2 years younger than I am.   I don't know when the funeral will be.  It will be 3 1/2 hours from here so I haven't decided if I'm going to go or not.  It will depend which day it is and whether I can get away.  Even though I didn't like his management style, he was a good man and I always liked him personally.  He left a wife and two kids.  Very sad

I had to share this hilarious birthday e-card I received (a bit late, but it's the thought).  This is from an old (wwaaaay old, but I digress) friend who had just visited Betsy and me with her husband, down from Seattle, at a little dinner we held in their honor.  They had the temerity to actually send a hand-written thank you note later, which I semi-humorously took them to task for, saying the entire edifice of 21st culture was now going to collapse due to their backward step.  Here is Pamela's text in her e-card to me:

Now I suppose you're going to berate me, AGAIN, for sending you something (sweet, tender and beautiful, by the way). I'll bet you're going to lambaste me for acknowledging you and your special gifts, for wishing you a gloriously brilliant full-spectrum birthday, for taking the time and trouble to spell out my admiration, love and affection for you. I know you're going to bark at me for breaking some sort of current protocol, for not getting with the program and just simply, sound-bitely, ultra-virtually saying "Happy Birthday" like all your other clown friends on Facebook!

Go ahead, think less of me, bulldoze over my fragile and brave attempt to sing your praises, to celebrate you and your divine existence and it's rich radiance beaming through our bankrupt civilization!

Go ahead--I love you unconditionally!

NetFlix, unlike Facebook, listened to their customer's complaints.  We received the following email this morning:

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster.

THIS is why I love iy when you are here, Ron.  Your stories are so vividly written that I feel as if you are telling me the story -

 thank you for this!

I saw the first Star Wars movie on a date.  We had to get on line for hours before the performance -,I enjoyed it but wasn't a FANatic --- I I saw the next two also on dates  as I recall - and saw the first 2 prequels in the theatre with Vixter and Vixdad ---

I don't recall ever seeing the 3rd prequel

I shall now rummage up some breakfast and then later I will meet BK for lunch.

But...but...whatever will you be doing with Kenny?

Kenny is now visiting his buddy, director Maury Dexter up in Moorpark, celebrating his 80th birthday (Kenny's birthday, not Maury's). He is visiting other friends in the area then returning to Palm Springs. If our schedules work out we may get together for a meal before he heads home.

Very sad

Cillaliz, my condolences on the loss of your former boss.

Good for Cheyenne! I really think Reineke sucks as a conductor: very unsympathetic to vocalists with too fast tempos. I think he's more concerned with getting through the piece and turning around for the applause and too long a schmooze with the audience. Bring back Arthur Fiedler!

That's very sweet, JMK. :)

Back from a lovelier than lovely lunch with MBarnum.  Also picked up the CD sleeves and will begin signing those shortly.  Also heard from another camera person - he's checking whether he's traveling on Friday or Saturday to a gig - if it's Saturday then he'll be available and I'll have none of the worries that I have with my guy and that includes the camera rental stuff.  So, the guy is still coming here, but it's easy for me to cut him loose if he doesn't want to deal with the camera rental, etc.

Meantime, I'm talking to a rental house at two-thirty to see what their deal is.

Just found out something more than a little irritating - just before we sent in the print for the Nudie CD I found that we'd left off the final track on the inlay card, the instrumental to I Don't Have To Hide Anymore.  Whew.  So, the Kritzerland designer did the new version and I approved it.  Today, the plant calls and says there's 26 tracks on the CD (correct) and 25 on the inlay.  So, I called the designer and as it transpires he never actually sent the corrected version to the printer.  Unbelievable.  It's not a horrible mistake, just annoying as I'd caught the problem and had it fixed.

After pricing machines & asking what was in stock I found the best prices at Best Buy.  I was told the Maytags I was interested in were at the warehouse.  After my doctor's appointment, which is conveniently located near BB, I stopped in to order the Maytags.  What the woman last night, not the appliance sales woman, neglected to mention is that the warehouse is in Portland which is close to 4 1/2 hours away ::)

I contemplated purchasing the machines on the floor but decided there were too many major scratches in the front of the dryer.  Looking at my 9 year old machines, which have only a couple of small scratches, I'm glad I purchase the scratched ones.

I've got clothes in the washer & will hang them to dry. We have enough towels to last until next week.  Craig has already been washing clothes & has more to do.  I think we can avoid the laundry mat until the 19th when the new washer & dryer will be delivered.

I rather enjoyed the song.
The instrumental breaks are definitely John Williams' Catina Band Themes from Star Wars IV. I also detected some lyrics married to this music. But not sure if all the music is used.

It also has a klezmatic feel to it especially as she gets everyone finally to leave the bar

The lyrics were by Ken and Mitzie Welch (best know for the work on the Carol Burnett show)

I bought yesterday a legitmate copy of the musical LOST HORIZON. It is the complete roadshow version including the infamous "musclemen ring-around-rosie dance". Also original featurettes. I wonder if it includes the Burt Bacharach special filmed on the monastery set.

Although it was a Columbia Pictures (Now Sony) production (with Ross Hunter) it is being released by Warner Brothers archive.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this.

Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzXKySxPFCI

I thought that that was actually a good song.  Has anyone heard of it before?  Was it written for the Star Wars special or is it from an existing show?

Inquiring minds want to know!
Can you imagine the young minds it dented and warped? Like mine?

I rather enjoyed the song.
The instrumental breaks are definitely John Williams' Catina Band Themes from Star Wars IV. I also detected some lyrics married to this music. But not sure if all the music is used.

It also has a klezmatic feel to it especially as she gets everyone finally to leave the bar

The lyrics were by Ken and Mitzie Welch (best know for the work on the Carol Burnett show)

Thanks for the info, Michael!

Saw the doctor this morning for my annual cholesterol check which was fine. It was all right last year (although perhaps on the borderline) but this year it was considerably lower. My doctor was really impressed! I said I had made an effort to eat less fatty food, such as pastries, cheese and butter. But I told him I hadn't cut out egg and bacon for breakfast!

Congrats on the good news, DR Doug R!

I had my twice-a-year bloodwork done on Saturday.  Usually, I would have to wait until I visit my G.P. to get the results, but now I will get it delivered to me firsthand on an iPhone app named--wait for it--Gazelle!

Health vibes to Dan (the Man)

I am back from auditions, but the turnout was poor. We did see several wonderfulperformers and we can fill at least tw of the three spots. Hugh Jackman was rehearsng across the hall from us.

Is Hugh Jackman getting ready to do another Broadway musical?

I haven't been all that crazy about all the jumping on the MAD MEN bandwagon, but this has me interested:

Cheyenne Jackson and New York Pops Will Celebrate "Mad Men" Era at Carnegie Hall (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/155355-Cheyenne-Jackson-and-New-York-Pops-Will-Celebrate-Mad-Men-Era-at-Carnegie-Hall)

I hope there is a recording in the works.

Good for Cheyenne! I really think Reineke sucks as a conductor: very unsympathetic to vocalists with too fast tempos. I think he's more concerned with getting through the piece and turning around for the applause and too long a schmooze with the audience. Bring back Arthur Fiedler!

I don't think he would look very good.

Something else in the Buffalo News:  I'm always fascinated with a feature of the weather page when I visit.  It's called "Sunshine Derby" and it lists the number of sunny days so far this year in 5 cities (50% sunshine is a sunny day).    Today's paper showed the following:

Syracuse:  44
Rochester:  50
Orlando:  109
Buffalo:  158
Phoenix:  203

Who have thought Buffalo would have more sunny days than Orlando!  And poor Rochester and Syracuse!

Speaking of the sting....Craig noticed Sherlock's leg had a wet spot & sure enough he has a sore.  We wonder if he was also stung but unlike me didn't make a fuss about it.

Well..... I struggled with the small, light print which is difficult to see when reading with a flashlight.  The writing style, for me, doesn't flow easily.  There were parts I liked very much & others that bored me.  I'll let you know tomorrow if others felt the same.  I know my friend recommended it and the reviews are exceptionally high.

Call her back and ask her what hardship she's got that made her a total bitch!

Many years ago, I coudn't get hired to save my life in Middletown, OH. Employers would see my application mentioned a masters degree and declare me over-educated for anything.I would have scrubbed toilets but I was too qualified. At one point, I applied to the First National Bank personnel dept. and the haughty ugly lady who worfed there yold me the same thing and suggested I go to the library and see if the director, crazy Arthur Wolman, who went off the deep end a year later, had any ideas about what to do with someone who had the nerve to have an M.A.

So, I went to see Arthur, who was very kind, but very angry that I was beng passed from company to company. He didn't hire me either, and about a a year later he checked into the Manchester Hotel where around midnight he appeared in the lobby stark naked demanding to know where his date was. That was the end of Arthur's library career.

So, a couple of weeks later I went back to the first National Bank personneloffice to let the personnel manaher know I was still looking for work and still available. In her haughtiest and bitchiest tone shesnapped"What are you doing here? I sent you to the library." I answered, "I came back hoping one of your clerks had dropped dead."

I still hate that bitch.

OMG! I remember that horrible, drecky Stars Wars Holiday Special!  YIKES! ::)

IIRC - and from what I just gathered from Google - the tune that Bea Arthur sings is basically based on the "Cantina Band Theme".

For more info, here's the entry from... wait for it... WOOKIEEPEDIA (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Star_Wars_Holiday_Special).

Did I miss the post about an accident, Jane?    if you're still healing, quick-healing vibes.

No new injuries, unless you missed my fall over Sherlock in June, thank goodness.  I'm still in PT from the shoulder break & partial replacement almost two years ago, and now I have a matching, pain wise, left shoulder.

Thanks for the vibes.  I would like, at least, the left shoulder to be better.

What DR Michael S said. :)

I just called our Deferred Compensation office to see how soon I could expect the money from my account to be sent to me.  She told me in no uncertain terms that my hardship claim was still being reviewed and that I shouldn't bother calling again until next week at the earliest.

Gee, I wonder what they consider a hardship?

DR FJL - I would comment on your "frolic" song, but, as I just discovered a few minutes ago, my sound doesn't seem to be working on my MacBook right now. ??? ??? However...

I really think, "Remember, Kid, Focus on what Eli did." should be on a t-shirt - with the quote over Eli Wallach's screen-printed face. :)

And now...

After a much busier day than expected - but it was a good "busy" - I need to get ready for bed. -Which includes at least 15 minutes of stretching. All the muscles around my pelvis - abs, hip flexors, obliques, glutes - have been really(!) tight lately - especially when I wake up in the morning. I really need to be more vigilant about a daily stretching routine. In any case...

Goodnight.

Had a very nice lunch with BK...I had a slamdunk burger which had plum sauce and dijon mustard....very tasty! Also orange cous couse, which was yummy. I think BK was afraid of the cous cous, although he seemed to enjoy saying it.

After lunch I came home and took a short nap. Feeling refreshed I decided to drive to West Hollywood. I parked on N. Laurel and walked about the neighborhood between Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd. Each street was jammed with klassic mid-century apartments. I was loving it!

Then I met up with a very nice young Turkish guy who models for Fitness magazines. We had some interesting conversations and whatnots and then I came home. Am ready for bed and to start another day of adventury.

Tomorrow I meet Scotty Morrow and his buddy Mark for breakfast and the are going to take me up to the Hollywood sign and then over to a spot where a lot of westerns were filmed.

Then in the afternoon I will drive over to Encino to spend the evening with my dear Jackie Loughery. Jackie was Miss America and played one of the Venusian girls in ABBOTT AND COSTELLO GO THE MARS as well as starring opposite Ed Kemmer in the 1956 film HOT ANGEL (one of the films I sent to DR Jrand last week). I am especially looking forward to meeting her poodle dog Sweet Pea. Sweet Pea is going to the groomers just to get prettied up for me!

And she was married to Guy Mitchell and Jack Webb....though not at the same time.

She is beautiful in HOT ANGEL....thanks for sending it to me.

DR JANE congrats on the new W/D.....I say replace!

Also I am just now commenting on the "new" Doris Day CD.  Something is not quite right - sound wise, although Doris sounds okay.  As has been revealed, most of the tracks were recorded for her Doris Day and Friends television show on CBN back in the early 1980's.

I would more highly recommend (if you don't have it) - Doris Day the Singles Collection.  It's still available and a lot more enjoyable.

I went over to Jerry's Deli and had a chopped salad - I was quite hungry and realized I won't eat again until almost six-thirty tomorrow.  I used a teeny-tiny bit of oil only, so almost no calories.

Driving the 2nd rental.

No car.

Another $600.00 car repair that the insurance company might not pay.

We'll see tomorrow hopefully.
