I'm back and still reeling from the beautiful, moving, elegiac production of CYMBELINE at the Beaumont. It was a play I had never seen nor read and it's a phantasmagoria of fairy tale and mythology, other Shakepeare plays, and British history. Imogen runs away to the Forest of Arden - actually it's called Milford Haven - to find her destiny after losing her husband because of the lies of Iago - actually Iachimo - and like the story of Snow White, the guide leading her is supposed to kill her. Instead he sends her off with poison from the wicked queen - he thinks it's a panacea - to the forest where finds shelter with a kind old man and his two sons who are actually her brothers. Finding happiness she takes the poison thinking it will heal her and she dies, to live again in a conciliatory ending preceded a visit from family ghosts and Jupiter himself bearing an oracle. Everyone is forgiven but the wicked queen and her rapacious son. The ending was guiet and quite moving.
I loved the cast, especially Martha Plimpton and John Pankow, but Jonathan Cake and Michael Cerveris were equally wonderful, and everyone had great moments. The production by Mark Lamos was so fluid and clear I had no problem following the convolutions of the tale, and I loved the incidental music, especially the unintentional diet of "Hark, Hark, the Lark." Absolutely beautiful production.
I'll be curious to see what DR Ben thought.
