Thanks Ginny & Edi.  Craig was extremely tired & I had a difficult time getting him moving, we had soooooo much to do.  Maybe it is good he was so tired, he saved me from spending a fortune on him, as it was I only spent a small fortune.

I spoke to him last night & he sounds happy, pleased with his classes & had just purchased a 4 pound laptop.  I can’t wait until he gets an internet service.

Ben-great song!

My song was Buttons and Bows-Dinah Shore

Keith’s was Cruising Down the River-Russ Morgan

Bryan’s was Tonight’s the Nights-Rod Steward

Craig’s was My Sharona-The Knack.  I don’t remember this one

"Muh-Muh-Muh My Sharona
My! My! My! My! My! Whoo!"

I remember that song.

Hmm... I suddenly feel old(er).

Well, apparently, the song had some unseemly subtext too.  So, better best not remembered.

I also think it was a very interesting "comment" to have Chris Daughtry close the show.  Just goes to show that the "losers" can have careers too.  Successful careers.

Way MORE successful than most of the winners, too.

Here's another way to pass the time that a friend of mine just forwarded to me:

What Was the #1 Song On the Day You Were Born?

DR Tomovoz - Alas, it only applies to the U.S. Billboard charts.

Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel for me..

Hmm.. I'm sure you've heard the "12th Street Rag" sometime, but just didn't know what it was called.  It goes like this:

Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Dah
Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Dah
Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Dah
Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Da-da-da-Dah

;)

Ohhhh....sure....why, that's "peppy."

Thanks Dakots-nice song too.

Poor Craig getting, were they at least British?  He is, or was, into British pop.  I don't know what his favorite music is now.

ASK BK

I just noticed on the original release of the David Shire CD (Bay Cities) the musical movements for the Reurn of Oz suite are indicated by the word index. Can you explain the use of indexes on cd tracks?

It was an old practice that was abandoned a long time ago - classical album did it all the time - instead of giving an overall suite separate track numbers, you gave the interior changes index numbers - CD players used to have the capability to go directly to an index point rather than a track - don't know if they still do.

And if you want to hear what it sounds like, here's a link to a cool marimba version of the "12th Street Rag".

Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project

You can click on a link in the middle of the page for a streaming audio version, or download it as an MP3 or WAV file.  The main hook of the tune comes after the intro.

*It's also just a really cool site too.

Tks (that's "thanks" in abbreviation lingo) for the link.  I DO know that ditty.  It's cool.

TOD

Ask BK Day!

(1)  As the director of THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X, did you find yourself making any changes to the characters that you, as the author, had created; based on the actors you cast in the first production?

(2)  Did you ever get around to watching the DVD of NATIONAL PASTIME?

Yes - me as director is very uncaring of me as a writer, unless it's a humorous moment that I know is funny in the writing, which I will protect with a ferocity.  That said, I'm very collaborative if the actor is really bringing interesting things to the table, and I'm not collaborative if the actor is bringing things in that are really obviously wrong.  So, in the case of Cason and Lauren and Alet, they would constantly do things in rehearsal that I loved, and I'd say yes, lock that up and keep it, or yes, but let's go even further.  And yes, I've certainly made character adjustments based on what the actor is doing, because sometimes it's more interesting than what we wrote.

I did finally get around to watching National Pastime a couple of days ago and was going to write about it.  I still think the play isn't really a play play - I find it awkwardly written and structured - but TCB is wonderful as Branch Rickey - a really well-nuanced and excellent performance, and much better than the one done here.

Off to work....

My question for ASK BRUSHES DAY:

If you could do a commentary on any film that hasn't been released on DVD yet, what film would it be?

I would be happy to do a commentary track on Frank Perry's Ladybug, Ladybug, on Frank Tashlin's Bachelor Flat, and, of course, on The Creeping Terror.

Question for BK -

If When The Brain from Planet X plays in a metropolitan area that's not LA, would you "localize" the geographic references?

No, it will always be the San Fernando Valley, just because it makes me laugh, and it's so typical.

Question for one and all DRs and bk,

What was the first tv show, aside from children's programming you remember seeing  on television?

The first TV show I actively remember seeing that wasn't kid oriented was Boston Blackie.

For bk: Will there be any music/book changes to THE BRAIN when it lands in LA next June?

Not sure about music changes (doubtful, but you never know), but there will definitely be some book adjustments - not many, but I'm still unhappy with a few things and we'll try to fix those for our next go-round.

Apparently LEGALLY BLONDE and LOVEMUSIK will NOT be performing on the Tonys as previously announced.

I know in theory this idea put people up in arms (it's tradition that only nominated shows for BEST MUSICAL can perform). But as someone who really wanted to see a performance by LEGALLY BLONDE especially. I am extremely disapopinted. :(

Well, you can always go to Legally Blonde's website for some clips.  Oh,and YouTube too.  ;)

*And at least on those sites, the numbers won't be truncated or adjusted for the stage of Radio City Music Hall.
