I was given a gift of a Joao Gilberto CD - I didn't have anything by him. This is a two-fer on Warners (but not sure if it came out in the US). The first album is orchestrated by Claus Ogerman, so that's luscious, of course, The second album is orchestrated by Johnny Mandel, and it's amazing, too. What a treat!
My jaw is agape (no mean feat) that you have had no
Joao in your home environment. You are talking about Amoroso/Brasil, obviously--and, yes, the Warner Archives 2-fer release is a U.S. release. There was a previous Brasilian release, which is maybe what you have. If you can get ahold of it (it's no longer in print), try to get the World Pacific CD The Legendary Joao Gilberto, with 37 incredible tracks from Joao's first legendary (obviously, LOL) LPs, which introduced the bossa nova.
I'm assuming you know that Joao is Bebel's father. His second wife, Miucha, sang with Jobim and is Chico Buarque's sister. Chico wrote the great song A Banda, which Herb Alpert covered fairly successfully in the U.S. after it was a huge smash for Quarteto em Cy in Brasil.
