I remember a show I was wild to have a cast recording for that didn't produce one until years after I saw it - GRAND HOTEL.

In my teens, I ordinarily wouldn't buy cast recordings until I saw a show so I didn't get CABARET or THE HAPPY TIME or GEORGE M! until I saw those shows. But around the time of PROMISES PROMISES, when it was obvious I wasn't going to get in to see the show during its first year or two on the boards, I started buying cast recordings as soon as they came out. Sometimes, of course, I'd have the recordings of shows that after I heard them, I knew I didn't want to see them.

This afternoon, I watched the Showtime-HD presentation of the Oscar winning AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. It's a very sobering and somewhat scary documentary. I didn't see the others in the category, of course, but I certainly enjoyed this one.

I finished the afternoon with another L&O:CI episode, this one reuniting Dennis Christopher and Paul Dooley as father and son. Yes, they've both aged since BREAKING AWAY (haven't we all?), but they made a really dysfunctional, mesmerizing pair in one of the best episodes from season two of the show.

I should have time later today to watch the 1942 RIO RITA before prime time TV begins tonight.

singdaw, while one should never say never, no, it's not intended that the DVD of The Brain will ever be for sale.  We're going to do a twenty-minute highlights cut down of it for promotional use in hopefully getting other productions.  There are just enough technical annoyances and one actor who is so completely out of control (once the show opened he just did what he felt like, despite me berating him for it as well as the faculty speaking to him), that it's not something I'd want to have out there.

Jrand, the new book takes place now.  I don't think it's a secret that it's a mystery, and the geography has to do with a crime scene.

TOD:

I guess, like George, I pretty much have most of the CDs going in.  But I do recall enjoying all the music to Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire's Baby in the theater, and waiting eagerly for the album [yes, in those days they still had albums] to be released.

Some people denigrate the book for Baby.  I don't have a problem with it - but that score!  Every single number is a knockout.  And the performances of all of the original cast members were such gems.  It's one of those cast albums where I look forward to each and every track.

I totally agree!  I LOVE this recording!  I got the CD (one of the first CDs that I ever bought) when I was going to Western Washington University and the year after I graduated, the theater department put on the show.  I went up for a day and visited friends and saw their production.  It was quite good.

I think BABY is one of the unsung (no pun intended) musicals of all-time. The score is fantastic and the story is something I would think many people could identify with. I got to play Alan in a production a few years ago, and it's one of my fondest theater memories.

We will be here at that time. At this point Mr. Morelli has no summer work lined up so we will be in the city for the summer.
Can you stow away on a tramp steamer (not a DR Jose Reference) and visit Oz then.

TOTD:  I've usually had the CD YEARS before I get a chance to see a production of a show.

With early (for me) Soundtracks - it would have been considerble time before we saved up enough for the luxury.  It was a major investment. To buy the Soundtrack of "Carousel" would have taken all of three months pocket money.  It probablly would have been a year or more after the seeing the film that we bought the soundtrack.  Records in the 1950's were a major money investment.  I remember my sister's first pay packet in about 1961 - from which she had to buy train fares, and pay board - was just over twice the price of an LP.

Of course I rushed out to buy a copy of the original cast CD of "The Woman in White" to see if there had been anything worthwhile in Act 2.  Ok I didn't and there wasn't!

More thoughts on TOTD:

I did buy "A Little Night Music" OBC the day after I saw the Australian production.

The Soundtrack of "Bugsy Malone" would have been a within 24 hour purchase.. DP Colin and I named our first dog Bugsy Malone and the second was Talulah

Our current dogs are "Fosca" (Passion) and Sir Magnus after John Le Caré's character in " Perfect Spy

DR C.P.- CONGRATULATIONS!

Sindaw, pollen.com is interesting.  Under the pollen count the weather report said it is snowing here.  I think not.  We are having a beautiful 64 degree day.

I’m waiting to hear all about DR Sandra’s first day as a substitute teacher, providing she has the energy to tell us about it.

Sherlock had 10 x-rays this morning.  There were a few areas of interest so the x-rays will be sent to a radiologist.  We should have the report back within a couple of days.

He was given something so she could take so many x-rays.  He's is fine, walks okay, is just sleepy.  Sleeping is good instead of running around and barking at the workman out back

I can't imagine carrying a sleepy Sherlock out of the vet's office to the car! Or getting him into the car!
