In watching the lovely dvd presentation of RAGTIME (NOT the musical), I'm reminded of just how wonderful Ahrens & Flaherty are as musical theater composing teams. I am also reminded of how wonderful Randy Newman's score for the film is. Lastly, I am reminded of how well-made this Milos Forman film is, the casting from the tiniest bit part to the giant that is James Cagney is perfect. (Even Debbie Allen acquits herself nicely).
On the other side of the tracks, Minx and I have made a new friend.
Late night on Wednesday, as I was taking her for her bedtime walk around the yard, a small male beagle puppy came wandering over to us from the woods. Damp and dreary, he wagged his tail, Minx wagged her tail; they sniffed each other without growling and the little guy followed us up onto the back porch, where I promptly got him some dog treats and a dish of water.
The next morning, the little guy was on the back porch when I took Minx for her 7:30am walk. he must have slept on the carpeting, but he was full of enthusiam to see the friends he had made the night before.
When I returned from work on Thursday afternoon, the little guy was all wags and jumps at seeing me. (With my parents' ages and health conditions, another dog seems to be out of the question - a point which I have raised over the last few days).
In the meantime, I have been scouring the Lost & Found sections of the newspapers and posting ads at the local grocery and variety stores.
Thursday night, I put an old fleece blanket on the front porch, which has a locakable gater, and set out bowls of Kibbles 'n Bits and water, closing the little guy onto that porch for the night. Now, whenever Minx and I go for our walks, whether morning, afternoon, evening or late night, the little guy tags along. Minx is alright with him - considering that she's nearly 14 and arthritic - BUT, if he even tries to sniff her tail end, then the growling starts.
Tonight, the youngster may have become a fixture - I stopped at Wal*Mart and bought him a toy and two real dog dishes for food and water. . .
This puppy can't be over nine months old, looks like and acts like a pure-bred beagle, may have been deliberately thrown out of a car along our road, his rear right leg has a very, very minute limp to it and he does not like LOUD voices or noises, and will always approach any of us on haunches, but with tail a-wagging.
I'll keep the DRs posted.
If he is indeed a permanent fixture, and with Bruce's kind permission, we're thinking of naming him KIMMEL.
