Well, you've read the notes, the notes were breathless, and now it is time for you to post until the breathless cows come home.

And the word of the day is: MACKLE!

I'm up, but going back to sleep soon.

The Swarm was something of a very guilty pleasure, IIRC.

I hate to be the one to tell them this, but terrible shows DON'T get better over time.

Very cold here this morning, and snowing a bit. And of course it is a work day. Oh well.
-
I'm really up now. momentary internet checking in the middle of the night, in part because I had gotten to sleep early (for me) and then wondered if an email form some people had come in. The one I was looking for hadn't, but sometimes lovely emails come in at 2 in the morning NY time, and I was glad we didn't wait until morning to get this particular one.

Good morning, Jrand
New York says hello

(Nah, that doesn't work, just almost trying for a HAIR reference)

Nice thought though! Thanks DR FJL.

TOD:
I will add METEOR and BRAINSTORM.

I hope the post that i removed the other day, which was taken down, was taken down before it really offended anyone. It may have remained in a quote, but it was intended to have been taken back. Sometimes we (meaning I in this case) take something personally even when the intention was never a personal affront.
I'm often taken aback if I consider something an affront. And in this case, I now surely know it was nothing personal towards me or anyone here.
-
The inner nit is like that DR FJL.
-
Off to work oh well.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And before 11:30!?!? On a Saturday too!?!?!?!? Waddup widdat? ;)
-
And still no inner nit here at Chez Harlem, so...
-
Good morning, all! In about 15 minutes I shall call a car service and tote this computer down to Tekserve. After that, a brief stop at Toyland to pack up some things for shipment to Ohio. Then I shall get to the East Village and catch this Indian film DOSTANA that DR MBarnum is contnually bugging me about seeing. After that, I actually get to come home for a brief stretch bwefore heading out to see WHITE CHRISTMAS with my drummer friend Chris. It's a full day, and tomorrow I'm sleeping in.
TOD:
THE ASSAULT OF THE KILLER BIMBOS, which I find tacky and hilarious beyond belief.
-
So... I think I'm going to get my day started, and maybe even head down to Times Square to catch the 10:00am showing of "Milk" since I have free AMC MovieWatcher passes to use up. And since I haven't been to MoMA in over two weeks, well... We shall see where the day takes me.

~~~~~VIBES TO DR JANE'S FRIEND SUE~~~~~
-
Spoo! I just learned that Tekserve opens at 10 this morning, so I have an hour and 15 minutes before I call the car service.
Last night, I repainted my small chest of drawers so that I can use it as a nightstand, and it looks quite spick and span. The newly assembled chest looks quite wonderful, too, I must say. My apartment actually looks civilized these days. On his next visit, DR MBarnum will think he's on the wrong fire escape.
I know a lot of people (me included) were very upset with what they decided to do to jim. But the people involved said to wait and see and that fans would not be disappointed. And i didn't really believe them. But after watching a few of the shows i do agree. The show is now must see tv and i race to watch it. The whole thing with jim/sam/melinda is very interesting. But i will say that one big thing that the show did was to make Camryn Manheim part of the "in" team. The first season we had melinda's friend that worked at the store. And then we had jay mohr. But i always thought they wasted camryn Manheim. But the last few weeks it's like her character has finally developed. I think this is where the character needs to be. WE need for melinda to have a confidente. It's okay to have eli. But she needs to have the camryn manheim character there by her side. It's especially moving re: the whole jim/sam thing.
One other thing re: last night's show in particular. It's always sort of bugged me how the ghosts can be pure evil in the beginning. And by the end of the show they are sweet as can be. I guess in this case it was a misunderstanding. But i just find it odd how quick they switch. Oh and what ever happened to melinda's brother? Is he gone for good?
Strange that the first opinions I hear of something can affect my expectations. The very first review i read of "Can't Stop The Music" back in the day was very much on the positive side, so i went into it expecting a pleasant little piece of disco fluff - I mean, with Nancy Walker involved, how bad could it be? I had a nice time, and was surprised that the overall tone of the reviews ended up being so negative.
-
...Or I could cook up a batch of Irish oatmeal, and make a fresh pot of coffee... :)
Uh-Oh! The internet has been restored at Chez Harlem. ;)
OH!
Catching up from the Topic of the Day the other day...
"The Cook, The Thief, The Wife and Her Lover"
"The Brown Bunny" - Which is actually a boring "controversial" movie, imho.
-
And as for the Topic of the Day today....
The only one that comes to mind right now - at least to my mind - is "Clash of the Titans". Oh, and I guess "Xanadu". Although, neither film really fits the bill proper.
Greetings all,
It's been a very busy and tiring week. I slept until 10am this morning, something I rarely do. Now I must eat breakfast and attend to many errands, including seeing Milk later in the day at Chelsea Cinemas (where dreams come true).
I'll have the afternoon free to watch more BONES episodes, and then tonight I'll be working on the last review disc in my pile: AMERICAN TEEN. There are some bonus features on the disc, but I have no idea how extensive they are. I guess I'll find out later today.
I mentioned MYRA BRECKINRIDGE the other day that happens to fit today's bad film/guilty pleasure topic. I also like AIRPORT 1975. AIRPLANE 2 is a fairly wretched sequel that I still find some amusing things in. Another would be BURNT OFFERINGS.
Greetings all,
It's been a very busy and tiring week. I slept until 10am this morning, something I rarely do. Now I must eat breakfast and attend to many errands, including seeing Milk later in the day at Chelsea Cinemas (where dreams come true).
Good Morning, DR Ben - What showing of "Milk" are you going to? I was planning on heading down there to see it too later today. We could "double". Well, "single and a half". ;)
We are seeing the 5:30 show. I'm seeing it with friends since Anthony doesn't want to see the movie. Not that he's anti-Milk or anything but he has little interest in politics and he wants to spend the time working on his Christmas card list. If you decide to wait until 5:30 I'll scan the theatre when we arrive and look for you.
I, on the other hand, remember where I was when I saw the headline in the Minneapolis Star (it was the evening paper before it merged with the Minneapolis Tribune to become the Star-Tribune) in November of 1978. I was doing a show in Saint Paul at the time (we were in rehearsal) and I had gotten off work and was going to go to Brothers Cafeteria for dinner before taking the bus to rehearsal. I stopped into Shinders to buy the paper to read over dinner and there it was, the news that Milk had been shot dead along with Mayor Moscone.
I also know Cleve Jones from my work with the NAMES Project so I expect this movie will bring up many memories.
-
DR George, thanks. I’m glad your show went well.
Thank you DRS Jose, FJL, JRand, and TCB.
Yesterday the hospital called me at 8:15 while I was in th3 radiation unit (in the same hospital) to be sure I was not late for my scheduled 9:15 checkin time ... the radiation people made sure I was done and out by 8:45
By 9 AM I was signed in, changed and in bed with an IV started pending a visit from the anestheologist and surgeon... and I waited and waited
and waited
then I waited a bit
then they served a delicious smelling lunch tpo everyone else on the floor... I of course was fasting
then I met the new RN we chatted quite a bit over the next couple of hours
at 2:05 they wheeled me into the OR....
Saturday afternoon greetings! I have just completed teaching Grantseeking Basics for the last time! Hi, DR Vixmom! I wanted to tell you how impressed I was with the poised and articulate update The Vixter provided here last night. You and your family remain in my thoughts and prayers.
DR Vixmom, you were smart to send Vixdad to work. I would have done the same, in fact when I had surgery a number of years back I sent Keith to the gym. He felt he shouldn't go until the nurse & doctor insisted he do so.
From what I have been told you will be very grateful for the implants. My friend recently went through the radiation & said it was easy. I've heard that a number of times, may it be so for you.
I am sick, I'm afraid. By the time I left work yesterday, which turned out to be a 6:30-6:30 day, due to a staff meeting, I was almost delirious with illness and lack of sleep. By 8:30 I was sound asleep in my recliner with Toby on my chest. I slept there until almost midnight, when DH Jed finally felt compelled to wake me up and take me upstairs. I slept fitfully from that point on. Toby was stuffed up too, and kept waking up crying unable to breathe right. As for me, my throat is still sore, I'm stuffed up, and I have a mean sinus headache. I can't take any antihistamines, either, because it'll dry up my milk supply. Saltwater up the nose is helping a bit.
So baby and I are curled up in our chair, doing very little today, trying to get better. I will have to go to the store at some point, though.
but enough about me -
I just finished watching the 1931 D.W. Griffith film THE STRUGGLE. Years ago I interviewed Zita Johann, the lead actress in this film. She told me she thought the movie was great, but nobody else did. Griffith by this time was considered old hat and his films were rather old fashioned. The reviews were bad.
I enjoyed the movie (it is about alcoholism), but it was indeed old fashioned, by 1931 standards even. However, Zita and the guy who played her alcoholic husband were very good in it.
I'm back from DOSTANA, a sex farce about as long as IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD and about half as funny. It could have lost an hour and I would have been happier since the screenplay is filled with needless subplots - such as the leading lady inviting her gay boss to meet her gay roommates - that go nowhere. I also suspect GLAAD will be unhappy with its stereotypes of all gay men as nelly screamers, although the film is very positive about being gay, but it's also a bit smarmy, reminding me of the worst moments of CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC. Also, for a sex comedy with a lot of near nudity, with lots of shots of boobs and male and female derrieres, it sure avoids any male crotch shots. For all the near nudity of John Abraham and his awesome body, he's either photographed from the back or from the waist up; he could be neuter.
The film's about two Indian men in Miami FL who pretend to be a gay couple to move into an apartment with a beautiful, single 27 year-old Indian woman. For a while I thought the film could be called HAROLD AND KUMAR LIKE IT HOT or SOME LIKE IT BOLLYWOOD and the one man would turn out to be actually gay, but the film kind of went in all directions and ended rather unsatisfactorily, to my thinking. There are subplots about a gay boss, not telling your mother you're gay, filing for US residency as a gay couple and the nelly queen in the government who's investigating the claim, and many musical numbers. There was a funny musical number involving Sam's mother and her disappointment to learn her son is gay, but I suspect that the first 10 minutes of watching Mr Abraham in his speedos and briefs will send DR MBarnum into a coma and he will never see the other 140 minutes of the film.
BK, I knew George Cosmatos. Our mutual agent set up a lunch for us once. He was a big book collector and I used to see him at all the LA book fairs. He was also part of the DeLaurentiis repertory company when I was so, we see each other a lot at Raffaella's house. George was a very opinionated, but also very endearing, fellow. He hit with one of the RAMBO movies; but probably his best movie was TOMBSTONE which he inherited after writer Kevin Jarre got fired off it as director. George was pretty much a reliable workhorse director.
-
Just now eating my lunch. Fortunately we have had many consumers today. But now there is a lull.
DR ELMORE all Bollywood movies are as long as It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.....
-
I've always enjoyed Cosmatos' work, actually.
-
DR ELMORE all Bollywood movies are as long as It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.....
And not as funny?
-
I've been having a fun little e-mail volley with my close personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, about various and sundried things.
-
This Bollywood film's plot has been done a million times - in films, on Three's Company, and other TV shows.
-
Oh...I forgot to mention that sadly Cosmatos passed away a few years back. I think it was some kind of brain tumor. I know he had gone blind before he died.
-
I watched a very famous movie last night....for the first time.
Is Jimmy Porter supposed to be the most obnoxious character in history in LOOK BACK IN ANGER.....or did Richard Burton decide to play it that way....besides being too OLD, his yelling got very tiring and annoying after about half and hour....and he wasn't too convincing playing that trumpet either.
-
This Bollywood film's plot has been done a million times - in films, on Three's Company, and other TV shows.
There are NO new plots - and there are no new federation steps.
-
There has never been a Bollywood film advertised with the slogan:
You Have Never Seen Anything Like It!
-
Der B and I now have a Blu-Ray player.
We can now watch Wall-E. We can also watch The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which we bought because we didn't want Wall-E to be lonely all by itself on the shelf. Wasn't that nice of us?
Both are gorgeous high definition transfers. You should be pleased with the way they look.
-
I've always enjoyed Cosmatos' work, actually.
Geez, I think he's usually pretty terrible. Maybe I haven't seen the right movies.
-
I think Cosmatos' movies are not all that good (save for the Rambo, which is) but I find his work always professional. He just had the bad luck of the draw, scripts-wise.
-
I watched two BONES episodes while I cooked and ate lunch. The first was another in the Gormogon story arc with the last scene our first hint that Zach may be the apprentice. (Killing the lobbyist in his coat closet.)
-
The second was the Christmas episode where Booth and Bones kissed for the first time (under the mistletoe). There is a bonus to see the kissing scene in its full form with a wildly extended version of the kiss. Lots of fun.
And, of course, the end is beautifully sweet and sentimental and tear-inducing.
-
Next, I watched (and made a DVD-R) of RUDLOPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER recorded this week in HD. I was too old when the show first came on TV (1964) for it to have been an endearing part of my childhood, but since I didn't have any version of it here, I thought this would be a cheap way to have it.
-
I ended my afternoon of leisure viewing with THE EVIDENCE, an episode I recorded three years ago that was still on my DVR. I had liked this episode so much (had a gay storyline) that I wanted to keep it. And since it doesn't look like the series is ever going to come out on DVD, I finally got a minute this afternoon to make a DVD-R of it as well.
-
I've been having a fun little e-mail volley with my close personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, about various and sundried things.
Can You Share any of the missives ?
-
Not really. The one thing I was trying to do, which was get him to come out here to do one of his college appearances that he's been doing isn't going to happen, because the colleges that have booked him apparently have all the money in the world to pay him and other names. I mean, a LOT of dough. I'd already gotten funding to get him out here and pay him what I thought was a pretty good fee, but apparently it's not even in the same country as what these people are paying (he told me I would be appalled - even he is appalled) - which, to my mind, is a little reprehensible, what with the economy and the school systems in the state they are. But I tried and he was very sweet about it all.
-
Afternoon surf completed and now heading back down and will have to get to work on AMERICAN TEEN now.
WBBL.
-
Just now eating my lunch. Fortunately we have had many consumers today. But now there is a lull.
DR ELMORE all Bollywood movies are as long as It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.....
and they all have subplots that go nowhere...that is just the nature of the beast. But they are pretty movies.
-
There has never been a Bollywood film advertised with the slogan:
You Have Never Seen Anything Like It!
LOL! So true!
Actually, half the fun of watching any Bollywood movie, new or old, is figuring out what US, UK, Japanese, Italian, Hong Kong, or other movie it is a copy of....and yet they always make it very Indian. They are cute and kitschy.
-
Just imagine THE GODFATHER or TOP GUN or THE EXORCIST, but with musical numbers.
(yes, all three have been done).
-
Guilty Pleasures?
I do own DVD copies of SHOWGIRLS and XANADU.
The former is "fun," and has a lot of beautiful naked girls.
;D
The other one has a nice dance number with Gene Kelly & Olivia Newton-John.
I also have DE-LOVELY which, despite what others may think, is not a "guilty pleasure," but a very entertaining, often moving, musical.
So there!
:P
-
I like XANADU....or did when I paid to see it. And I played the soundtrack album endlessly.....
-
Just imagine THE GODFATHER or TOP GUN or THE EXORCIST, but with musical numbers.
(yes, all three have been done).
All of the plots tied up in ONE Bollywood movie!
-
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE?
I've only seen it once all the way through and that was about 35-40 years ago.
[There is no way I could sit through it again.]
It was late at night...about 1 o'clock in the morning...and my ex-wife and I were falling on the floor laughing. It was so bad that it was actually entertaining.
BTW: I really like ED WOOD. I think it's the best thing Tim Burton has done.
-
I think DR MBARNUM once linked to a site that showed the 'influences' of other films on various Bollywood movies.
But DISCO Dancer is still my favorite recent viewing.....and just in case you forgot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYzo1NebtDk
My DVD was of course sent to me by DR MBARNUM.
-
Well, for a while it was more like SOME LIKE IT HOT. Then they dropped any interest in pursuing that plotline and it became the mother-son plot from TORCH SONG TRILOGY. In THREE'S COMPANY it's two women and one man pretending to be gay, but here it's two men pretending to be a couple. It certainly runs the gamut.
It's almost time to leave for WHITE CHRISTMAS.
-
I think people are really misunderstanding the topic of the day. It's not about general guilty pleasure movies, but about a specific KIND of guilty pleasure film which was peculiar to the 70s and 80s, i.e. The Cassandra Crossing, Airport 75, Escape To Athena, Raise The Titanic and many, many others.
-
DR Elmore
I am listening to "Robert & Elizabeth" this morning.
I know Now/Soliloquy bring tears to my eyes with their beauty. Wonderful June.
-
TOTD no clue!
-
I also have no problems at all with "DeLovely" (nor with "Beyond the Sea")
-
maybe it is the name Tom that scares people away from the Board.
-
Just imagine THE GODFATHER or TOP GUN or THE EXORCIST, but with musical numbers.
(yes, all three have been done).
The original Exorcist didn't have musical numbers?
Why is it I remember a scene where Father Dyer is tinkling the ivories at a party, and then Regan comes downstairs and does the same, sort of?
Sure sounds like a song cue to me!
Ah, yes, The Cassandra Crossing. The plot, in five words: Train fall down go boom.
I think i read last week that the finale of TAR was in portland. I cannot wait for the show.
And after it we have the finale of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA.
Shockingly my niece begged to go sit on santa. My sister did not want her to do it since her husband was not there (he didn't want to go).
But she was dragging me. So i suggested we just have her go meet santa and see if she would even sit near him. And then if they wanted to take a pic, they go as a family together.
She did go see santa. And i was shocked. She sat there and told him what she wanted. And then he told her he loved her. And she hugged him and told him she loved him. I really would not have believed that one.
My sis decided to get the pic.
-
And the free train ride around the mall was very fun. She loved it!
-
However, I remember Exorcist II: The Heretic as being wonderfully guilty, at least in it's original form before they edited the hell out of the ending (no pun intended).
-
Ginny, are you having a big retirement dinner? Or a tea? Or possibly a kegger?
My department is having a reception for me on Dec. 15. It will be in the Auditorium where I do most of my programs and we've invited the entire Library staff as well as some of my nonprofit contacts from the outside.
It sounds nice. I'm sure you will share the details with us. It has been exciting & reading your last this, last that.....:)
-
I'm really up now. momentary internet checking in the middle of the night, in part because I had gotten to sleep early (for me) and then wondered if an email form some people had come in. The one I was looking for hadn't, but sometimes lovely emails come in at 2 in the morning NY time, and I was glad we didn't wait until morning to get this particular one.
The emails I get between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM usually invite me to purchase Viagra or seeking help from Nigeria
-
Thank you DR Ann. I forgot about the antihistamines-not fun. I hope you are much better by Monday. Stay healthy vibes for DR Jed.
What kind of hardware company [Hewlett Packard] sells you a printer without the USB cable in the box to enable you to connect it to your computer and...oh, I don't know...actually USE it?? >:(
Canon. I just got a new one a few months ago. They provided a phone cord because it's a scanner/copier/fax machine (I don't need no stinkin' fax machine!)...but like HP, no USB cable! :P
The VIDEO: IN THE HEIGHTS... DREAMS COME TRUE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nV9IRY5A1s)*
The video features the finale of the show, so consider this a partial spoiler. But it's still worth watching, regardless.
Thanks Jose, that made me cry. What a totally cool thing for them to do for him
-
And John Boorman can also be credited for another guilt trip, Zardoz.
-
I have been home all day (I didn't even go to work to make up some time ;)) and have just been doing nothing but watching TV. I will very soonly need to take a shower, get dressed, get gas for my car and buy a small (and very inexpensive) birthday present for Christina (we were in "The Taming of the Shrew" together last year) because she's having a birthday party tonight after the show and most of the cast are going. One of her housemates is Elizabeth, who plays the narrator and FDR in Reefer Madness! The Musical.
Ate some junk from Gelson's. That'll do it for Gelson's for at least a week. Tomorrow, something wholly different.
Finished a DVD, and will now listen to a CD, then watch another DVD. Very logey today.
Today, I installed my new cellulose shades in the dining room and on the landing. 7 of them in all. Whoa, that's a lot of work over my head, I'm going to feel it in my shoulders and neck...then I took the roll up shades that I had taken down, packed them up and took them to the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. They were custom shades and still in pretty good shape so hopefully someone else can use them. Then I did some shopping at Lowes and Target and came home where I made a big pot of chicken vegetable soup. It's very tasty
-
Well, I have to get ready now and leave. Have a good evening, all!
-
Have a good show, George
Are those made from overweight people's rear-ends?
Jack, it is uncanny the way our minds think!
Drove home in a snowstorm and almost broadsided a huge, dark SUV that pulled out in front of me without lights. If I'd been going faster, I'd have spun on the slippery pavement when I braked. Winter - YUCK!
I guess I'll start another DVD now, or maybe finished one that I began the other day, The Secret Of Romney Marsh - I watched part one and have two more parts to go.
-
Then again, I might watch a couple of Hitchcock hours - or something wholly other.
-
I have some melon balls to eat, too, both cantaloupe and honeydew.
-
I also have no problems at all with "DeLovely" (nor with "Beyond the Sea")
I enjoyed BEYOND THE SEA (except for the constant foul language)...have always wondered about DELOVELY.
We just watched a Bones episode from Season 1. It was a Christmas story, but I think not the same one mentioned by DH MattH earlier.
How fun! Kevin Spirtas sure did a fantastic job, and I really enjoyed Sharri Lewis (who I am totally unfamiliar with). John Pagano is nice to watch.
-
Just finished chowing down on some leftover Chinese food and now will continue watching a DVR'd movie titeld IT'S ALIVE...stars Tommy Kirk and Shirley Bonne...it is one of those filmed in Texas movies from the 1960s. So bad, but so fun.
and Nina Foch died Friday after falling sick on Thursday while teaching an acting class at USC. She was 84.
She will be missed.
I hadn't heard about either which I find rather rather of surprising.
I took Sheena to the dog park today and while speaking to someone there that volunteers at the pound, I found out that the hound I liked is still at the shelter and is slated to take the walk if he is not adopted by next Saturday. It turns out that he bit someone (not badly) but enough that he will be put down.
Having seen the dog for myself, I have to wonder what made him bite. He seemed a sweet dog and nicely trained.
I am so torn as to what to do. I'd made my mind up to just have Sheena but I don't want that other dog to die.
It was to late for me to go to the shelter today but I could make it on Wednesday night when they are open until 7.
-
Sorry to hear about Beverly Garland and Nina Foch.
DR Danise, is this the Humane Society or the local shelter?
Thank you DR Cilla. I wish I were as handy around the house as you are.
Danise, you could take Sheena with you to the pound for a meet and greet to see how they get along. At least, they let you do that in Washington, but you could always ask. Then you could find out what Sheena thinks of the other dog before you adopt.
If it were the Humane Society I would be more concerned about the biting, still it should be something you look carefully into.
It was hard to take a photo with the sun shining in the window
DR Ginny, what scare you had!
I'm so glad you didn't hit that SUV!
That's why i'm afraid to go up North in the winter months. I don't know what I would have done if the roads had been snowy/icy.
DR Cilla, the new shades add so much warmth to the room. You must be very pleased.
Thanks TCB, I am very happy with them.
DR Danise, I really feel sorry for you having to make a decision like that. Vibes that you are content with whatever decision you do make
DR Ginny, glad that you close call was just that. I hate those winter time scares, but glad you can breathe a sigh of relief
I'm just upset because I saw that poor dog and liked him. Lord only knows how many they put down every day. I have no idea how many of the ones I saw last weekend are gone.
I never should have asked and I wish the lady had not told me. Sometimes it's best not to know. :(
-
Opps, it thew us into widescreen. Sorry.
-
Yes, sometimes it is best not to know. Is there a humane society or a hound rescue group you could speak to? They might offer a back-up solution if you take the dog & there is a problem.
I thought you could let the dogs meet. Is there another shelter near you that permits them meeting?
Oh I did finely get to see the newest Indy movie today. Didn't do anything for me.
Thanks, DR Jane. At least I have a few days to think about it.
-
I think I shall hit the hay as well.
Goodnight all.
-
DR Danise, that is too bad about the hound dog...and doubly bad that they won't let you take your dog to meet potential adoptees....you wouldn't want a dog that is going to bite you or Sheena or a guest, and that his difficult to know unless you can have both pet and to be pet meet.
Maybe a trip to the Humane Society would be in order...those dogs will have had a personality profile done and it makes it much easier to find a good fit.
Best of luck to you and Sheena and I know there is just the right dog out there for you guys! He or she is just waiting for you to find them!
-
And it never bothers me to go to the Humane Society or the dog pound...I just put on my rosey colored glasses (as my friend Mark would say I do) and presume each and every animal will find a good home! And I am certain that they do!
-
Now it is time for me to enjoy some Bollywood. Today the mail man brought C.I.D. 909 (1967), a James Bond type spy thriller that I had hoped and hoped would make it to DVD some day...and it finally did! Woohoo!
A great cast of Feroz Khan (as agen 909), Mumtaz, Helen, Bela Bose and Tun Tun. I am an hour into it and am having great fun...specially with Feroz in those skimpy swim trunks!
We just watched a Bones episode from Season 1. It was a Christmas story, but I think not the same one mentioned by DH MattH earlier.
That Season 1 Christmas story is one of my all-time favorite BONES episodes. The Season 3 Christmas episode isn't as moving, but it does have the Booth/Tempi kiss.
-
So sorry to read about Beverly Garland and Nina Foch, both of whom I always enjoyed watching.
-
I began my evening with AMERICAN TEEN, a documentary focusing on the senior years of five selected teens in Indiana. I didn't find the "types" they chose to focus on all that interesting, and apart from the director veering off into some animated flights of fancy with the kids, the stories were mundane.
-
The bonus features didn't amount to much. Some Q&A with the kids (now three years removed from the events of the film), some deleted scenes, and trailers centerting around each of the five subjects.
-
With the rest of the night to myself, I watched THE SINGING NUN. It's a nice transfer, and I was pleased to finally have this in my collection.
-
I had a hankering to watch the Keira Knightley PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, so I put that in and watched the first 45 minutes or so. I'll likely finish it tomorrow while I'm cooking and eating lunch.
-
I think for the first time in about a year and a half, I have NO discs now in my review stack. I will have another day off tomorrow!
-
It's been a most festive day. I do believe I side with DR Ron Pulliam on WHITE CHRISTMAS, which I really really enjoyed. I think David Ives' script improves upon the screenplay enormously, and I really loved the musical numbers, the staging and the cast. I was prepared to have a good time, since I have so many friends involved with the show, and I'm so glad I saw it.
DR MBarnum would love this show. It verges on kitsch at times but never goes there and it's smartly assembled.
I was sitting in house seats and I was appalled by the idiocy and rudeness of the audience in expensive seats around me. Thirty minutes into the first act the four people sitting directly in front of me and Chris showed up, took forever to sit during a musical number, and then the younger couple talked, laughed and made out for the rest of the act. What dildos. Behind me an idiot woman rattled the ice in her cup(!!) and never shut up, even when her damned mouth was full.
Late night surf over and now I think I'll head down to bed.
After the show, Chris and I walked out to find it snowing as we walked over to Radio City to see the tree; it's quite glorious this year. Now I'm home and it's time for my meds.
DR tomovoz, the late great Miss Bronhill never sang a bad note in her entire career, I do believe. Lordy, she was a wonder!
What kind of hardware company [Hewlett Packard] sells you a printer without the USB cable in the box to enable you to connect it to your computer and...oh, I don't know...actually USE it?? >:(
DR singdaw - Alas, that's standard procedure for almost all companies. :-\ -I remember when I was looking for a new printer a few years ago, and starting reading the customer reviews on Amazon.com. The number one complaint across the board was the lack of a USB cable in the box.
-
Cilla - Well, the lovely 2 a.m. email was sent from California at 11 p.m., so it was nice to have read it sooner rather than later. :)
-
Thanks to Tomovoz from us as well for the lovely calendar!
Greetings all,
It's been a very busy and tiring week. I slept until 10am this morning, something I rarely do. Now I must eat breakfast and attend to many errands, including seeing Milk later in the day at Chelsea Cinemas (where dreams come true).
Good Morning, DR Ben - What showing of "Milk" are you going to? I was planning on heading down there to see it too later today. We could "double". Well, "single and a half". ;)
We are seeing the 5:30 show. I'm seeing it with friends since Anthony doesn't want to see the movie. Not that he's anti-Milk or anything but he has little interest in politics and he wants to spend the time working on his Christmas card list. If you decide to wait until 5:30 I'll scan the theatre when we arrive and look for you.
I, on the other hand, remember where I was when I saw the headline in the Minneapolis Star (it was the evening paper before it merged with the Minneapolis Tribune to become the Star-Tribune) in November of 1978. I was doing a show in Saint Paul at the time (we were in rehearsal) and I had gotten off work and was going to go to Brothers Cafeteria for dinner before taking the bus to rehearsal. I stopped into Shinders to buy the paper to read over dinner and there it was, the news that Milk had been shot dead along with Mayor Moscone.
I also know Cleve Jones from my work with the NAMES Project so I expect this movie will bring up many memories.
Sorry, our paths did not cress DR Ben today. I ended up meeting some friends for dinner in Times Square and then went to the 7:05 showing at the AMC 25...
I believe I started crying as soon as the movie started. I had been hearing nothing but praise for Sean Penn's portrayal - basically, immersion - of Harvey Milk, and I would have to agree with all the superlatives. And Van Sant's blending of existing footage from the time with his own images is practically seamless, and really tells the story. I found myself genuinely and deeply moved at many points during the movie. And the final images, well... I just had to stay in my seat until the credits finished. I needed the time...
...And then when I stepped out of the theatre and saw that it was snowing outside, well... I cried again. :)
-
DR vixmom - I'm glad that your procedures went well after all that waiting and waiting. -And that's very nice that your parents were there too. :)
-
This morning I received an absolutely beautiful arrangement of flowers signed, "from all my children". That is soooo sweet. In such a short time I'm going from two children to four-kind of fun.
And no labor pains either! :D
-
According to Facebook, DR Ann is now officially sick.
Physically, or mentally?
Isn't that what people normally about you, DR singdaw?
;)
I am still in my vintage lounging pajamas and (comfy and quite striking) 1940s bathrobe.
And where was your camera?
I'm back from DOSTANA, a sex farce about as long as IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD and about half as funny. It could have lost an hour and I would have been happier since the screenplay is filled with needless subplots - such as the leading lady inviting her gay boss to meet her gay roommates - that go nowhere. I also suspect GLAAD will be unhappy with its stereotypes of all gay men as nelly screamers, although the film is very positive about being gay, but it's also a bit smarmy, reminding me of the worst moments of CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC. Also, for a sex comedy with a lot of near nudity, with lots of shots of boobs and male and female derrieres, it sure avoids any male crotch shots. For all the near nudity of John Abraham and his awesome body, he's either photographed from the back or from the waist up; he could be neuter.
The film's about two Indian men in Miami FL who pretend to be a gay couple to move into an apartment with a beautiful, single 27 year-old Indian woman. For a while I thought the film could be called HAROLD AND KUMAR LIKE IT HOT or SOME LIKE IT BOLLYWOOD and the one man would turn out to be actually gay, but the film kind of went in all directions and ended rather unsatisfactorily, to my thinking. There are subplots about a gay boss, not telling your mother you're gay, filing for US residency as a gay couple and the nelly queen in the government who's investigating the claim, and many musical numbers. There was a funny musical number involving Sam's mother and her disappointment to learn her son is gay, but I suspect that the first 10 minutes of watching Mr Abraham in his speedos and briefs will send DR MBarnum into a coma and he will never see the other 140 minutes of the film.
Well... I didn't see "Dostana", but I did see this at MoMA earlier this afternoon:
What planet are you from?
What planet? I've always thought more along the lines of: Which cabbage patch?
Not really. The one thing I was trying to do, which was get him to come out here to do one of his college appearances that he's been doing isn't going to happen, because the colleges that have booked him apparently have all the money in the world to pay him and other names. I mean, a LOT of dough. I'd already gotten funding to get him out here and pay him what I thought was a pretty good fee, but apparently it's not even in the same country as what these people are paying (he told me I would be appalled - even he is appalled) - which, to my mind, is a little reprehensible, what with the economy and the school systems in the state they are. But I tried and he was very sweet about it all.
It seems that Stephen Sondheim and Frank Rich come as a pair lately. Well, ever since they appeared during the Sondheim Celebration at the Kennedy Center. -I just wonder how many truly "new" questions Frank Rich could have for Stephen Sondheim after all of these years?
I think DR MBARNUM once linked to a site that showed the 'influences' of other films on various Bollywood movies.
But DISCO Dancer is still my favorite recent viewing.....and just in case you forgot:
Ummm.. I haven't forgotten that... ::)
Shockingly my niece begged to go sit on santa. My sister did not want her to do it since her husband was not there (he didn't want to go).
But she was dragging me. So i suggested we just have her go meet santa and see if she would even sit near him. And then if they wanted to take a pic, they go as a family together.
She did go see santa. And i was shocked. She sat there and told him what she wanted. And then he told her he loved her. And she hugged him and told him she loved him. I really would not have believed that one.
My sis decided to get the pic.
My brother, Mike, is really hoping that his youngest daughter - and my god-daughter - won't hit(!) Santa this year during the kiddie portrait sitting. ;)
The VIDEO: IN THE HEIGHTS... DREAMS COME TRUE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nV9IRY5A1s)*
The video features the finale of the show, so consider this a partial spoiler. But it's still worth watching, regardless.
Thanks Jose, that made me cry. What a totally cool thing for them to do for him
You're very welcome, DR Cillaliz. -And that kid really is good!
Like elmore, I, too, went into White Christmas to enjoy it. I wish I had. I thought the book was terrible, but that's what makes horse racing. And I also thought the cast was sub-par save for Bogardus, but that's what makes horse racing. But frankly, if elmore liked Jeffrey Denman I simply throw up my hands (no mean feat - I mean, have you ever thrown up your hands - dinner, yes, but hands?) because the guy is so obviously charmless and personalityless.
-
Me? Fickle?
;)
I saw Miss Beverly Garland about three years ago - she looked great and was sharp as a tack.
-
Finished with my viewing - think I'll take a nice hot shower and then listen to more CDs.
-
Finished C.I.D 909. Now debating on watching another movie or going grocery shopping at the all night market. Bosco has no pig ears or greenies, and he has not been a happy camper about it.
DR MBarnum - I don't believe
refusing to see not seeing "Dostana" actually makes me "fickle". If anything, it makes me "prescient".
;D
And in other entertainment-related news, Bettie Page is said to be critically ill after suffering a heart attack.
The NBC affiliate here in NYC ran that story last night. Unfortunately, the accompanying footage was taken from YouTube... ???
DR Danise - You will know when the time is truly right. And so will Sheena.
Don't use those ten dollar words on me DR Jose!
All I can say is that next time I am in NYC I will trick you into going to a Bollywood movie.
Rodzinski went, and he survived....although it is true, he hasn't been seen since.
-
Well, I guess I shall go late night grocery shopping. Bosco follows me to the cupboard everytimg I go to the kitchen, thinking he is getting one if his treats. I must not continue to disappoint.
-
Count me in as another fan of the musical version of White Christmas. -And I'm also a fan of Jeffrey Denman, Meredith Patterson, Stephen Bogardus and Kerry O'Malley. I think the key to liking the production is not only going in wanting to like it, but also making sure that you don't judge the performances in comparison to the originals. There will never be anyone like Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby or Vera-Ellen.
I think for the first time in about a year and a half, I have NO discs now in my review stack. I will have another day off tomorrow!
Have you noticed that there are VERY few upcoming catalog titles for DVD? No 2009 announcements yet from Fox.
Everything being announced these day is Blu-Ray.
We just had the same problem with HP. The USB cord was defective and my wife spent two hours+ on the phone with the tech person trying to get it up and running.
They sent us a new cable, then she spent another hour or so on the phone before everything was okay?
For those of us of a certain age (and we know who we are, unless we're forgetful, which sometimes happens at our age), the new BEST OF PASSWORD 4 DVD set is a gem. Get it!
bk - Have you seen THIS (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/123961.html/pg2) yet? -Just scroll down a little.
That might explain a few orders that came in.
I don't really care that Jeffrey Denman isn't Danny Kaye. He isn't anything, that's my problem - he's a bore, a cipher, no personality, no joy, no comic ability. Exactly what is it that people like in this guy. I know, horse racing, but this one boggles my mind. I didn't mind Kerry or Meredith, just found them bland. If Harry Groener were doing Denman's part (say ten years ago) THEN I would get it, because he does have style and personality and comic timing.
-
OK... Since I actually got up early this morning, well...
Goodnight.
