At any rate, I took DakotaCelt "to task" for classifying the 1980s as VINTAGE.

VINTAGE?  Really?  I propose an HHW.com RULE that requires at least 3 decades to elapse before something is declared/classified as "vintage".

Harrumph!

I have clothes from the 1970s that are vintage....well, at least the denim leisure suit.

:D

There were also photos of his house in a soap mag that someone posted at one time or another....

I guess one of my favorite pictures is from the 1997 flood in Grand Forks, ND. After the floodwaters receded, the sewer system was out of order and one had to locate a privy somewhere to use. A number of houses had been destroyed by the flood waters but some enlightened soul placed a sign on the privy, "This house must be saved at all costs".

HERE'S (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/01/arts/music/01lynd.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin) a review from today's NY Times about her cabaret debut.

"FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY SHE IS FREE AT LAST!!!! yes it's true, the miracle we have been asking for has come. as of last Wednesday 10/24's scans , Sarah is cancer free. the best pictures i've ever seen was that of a healthy nasopharynx. the radiologist called what she saw a "wonderous recovery." we still have to be cautiously optimistic since there is always the chance that the cancer could come back. the results of the scans are being sent to dana farber in boston for another opinion, but all of Sarah's doctors feel that it's gone for good. she will continue to be monitored on a regular basis for the next several years, so please remain keeping her in your prayers."

Vixmom, that's wonderful news!! :D

Really need to post the pics but the folder is full.

I had this idea (no, really...I did!) that since we have to purge the photo folder every so often, why not just set up our very own Haines His Way (free) Photobucket.com account to use whenever the photo folder is full?  Since it's free, I did. :) I made a specific password (but one that everyone here can remember ;)) and if anyone wants to post pictures, I'll PM or e-mail the name and password rather than posting it, so that only "we" know what it is.  How's that sound?  Then whenever the HHW photo folder is full, we can use the HHW Photobucket account until it's purged again...or just use the Photobucket account until that's full and then another account can be created.  However, since it's the free account, the picture size is limited to 1 MB per picture, but the account can have up to 1 GB of pictures.

So, if anyone wants the name and password, let me know.  I created a unique e-mail address (since one is required to set up the account and I can create up to seven e-mail addresses) and if there are any problems, it can all be deleted and we can start over.

We had no Trick or Treaters but then we live in an apartment building in Manhattan and while Trick or Treating does happen in some buildings, in the 26 years I've been in my building there has never been a child living here and we have never had any Trick or Treaters, so I guess we will have to eat all the Candy Corn ourselves.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm Up!  And I've already been to the gym - I stepped foot into at 7:00am!  Got a great workout in - it's amazing how many things you can get done when you don't dawdle - although, I never really dawdle at the gym, I just usually like to take my time.  In any case...  I've just had my post-workout meal/smoothie, and now I just have to wash out my blender, take a shower and then hop on the train to head down to rehearsal.  Whew!

Good morming, all! In the category of dream as metaphor: the last dream I remember this morning is my being dumped into the middle of the ocean in a clown suit and waiting for rescue. Even my subconscious is a critic.

DR Jose, yes, I do believe we're on for tonight and UGLY BETTY will be taped. I have to buy a tape. I first have a bit of laundry, then the NYPL.

I just got my second chart for Ashley Brown; should be fun.

BK, who did end up doing your orchestrations for next week?

I'm listening to the soundtrack for MARY POPPINS this morning. I haven't listened to it in several years. It sounds just like a fantastic musical, which is more than I can say for what's playing on Broadway at the moment.  Kostal's work is amazing.

November greetings!  I just received my prize for the costume contest - a cup full of fun size candy bars that our assistant manager got for half-price last night at Wal-Mart - 2 Butterfingers, a Reese Cup, a Kit Kat, and some no-name chocolates that I won't eat because they give me an optical migraine.

Yay for Sarah!  That's the best news I've heard in a long time.

The pictures I most remember are two horrific ones from the Vietnam War period. One was a man being executed by being shot in the head. The other was a naked child running down a street screaming. Both of those photos have haunted me for years.

I watched some more of SCROOGE (1951) this morning. I finished cleaning the bedroom areas quicker than I thought and had some time on my hands.

One of the things I dearly love about the new TV is that the LEDs that furnish the light source are good for 60,000 hours (the life of the set basically). With my old lamp-based set, I wouldn't never have fired up the TV for only 30 minutes of viewing.

Laugh o' the day department:  Sometimes when the scintillating repartee of HHW is simply too much, I dumb myself down and go to the Musicians' posts on Portland Craigslist.  Well, there's one hilarious argument going right now between some guy from Vancouver (WA) who hates Portland and others who are defending Portland, all in their own incapable-of-spelling, ignorant way.  :)

So, here's my laugh--the Vancouver guy (ALL IN CAPS, OF COURSE) said no one famous ever came from Portland, whereas LOTS of famous folk hail from Vancouver, including (wait for it) Geno Vaneli (sic), who, according to this genius, was in Quicksilver Messenger Service and went on to a solo career.  Some marginally informed person responded that this dope was thinking of Dino Valente, which just totally cracked me up.  (Not to mention that Gino of course is from Canada, though he does now call Portland his home).

Oh, come on, Jack!  I know Angela was an especial FAVORITE of yours!  You fell in love with her (meaning her teammates') execution of the Audrey Hepburn outfit and you hated to see her go!

And when she got that second chance, I know you were devastated at the judges' reaction to that "shrug" that no sane woman ANYWHERE would be caught dead wearing!

Kayne wasn't so bad.  Most of his clothes looked good  "from an angle".  That last thing looked great in the front.  It was that chicken wire mess in the back "that done him in, lord love him!"  (And my favorite quote from last season came from Laura the Evil:  "There's some serious ugly in this room"...re: Kayne's recycled materials outfit).

Now....look....don't get started on your dream designer Vincent!

Ron--I'm glad you found a dentist you like. Several years ago I joined an HMO, which was supposed to be one of the best in the US. I was due for a cleaning and tried to book an appointment with a nearby dentist. My God, what an ordeal! The nearby guy was no longer with the plan, the next closest (and not convenient) was clearly discouraging plan participants, another NEVER answered the phone, etc. By the time I got my cleaning I was many months overdue and was in bad shape. Really substandard care. I no longer bother with dental insurance; I look for quality practitioners and pay out of my pocket. Going to the dentist is no joy--at least you should have a practitioner and staff that you feel are competent and caring.

Wow 400-600 trick-or-treaters. That is crazy.

I don't think anyone came this year till 6:30pm (it was just starting to get dark). I closed up at 8:15pm. I think most people come around 7pm.

I let me sister and her husband take as much of the leftover candy as they wanted.  I hid some other candy that i wanted (well it's not exactly hidden since i know the place). :)

I try to give each kid one little chocolate bar, 3 lollipops and 1 bag of gummy bears.  Near the end i gave one kid 3 chocolate bars (i wanted to get rid of one kind).

Btw, the newspaper boy hit my pumpkin yesterday morning so my poor little skeleton was limping before Halloween even started. :(

RE: last season SEASON 3 OF PROJECT RUNWAY

*
*
*

LOL!

;D

Well since i loved this season but never got to talk about it since I was on delay. I did not like Angela's designs.  But Vincent! Ugh. I could not wait to see him go. :)

I actually really liked Kayne though.

DR Der Brucer re: your comments about kids being two.

I think all kids are different. AT this point she doesn't really throw tantrums. Although sometimes if she doesn't want to do something she won't.  But usually if someone asks her to try something she will.  Which is why i thought she would like to try trick-or-treating.

Good morning!

Today, I go to endure an actual haircut at an actual salon -- it has been years since I did anything of the kind. But I'm gonna try looking professional for the marathon interview weekend in Seattle... even put clear polish on my nails.

The Chairman indicated that the meeting with the Staff is probably the most important Event of the weekend - they are spazzed out, suspicious, unhappy, hurt and angry that Their Guy is being replaced. I'll bring them candy.

Thanks for the reminder, DR Jennifer.  I don't usually watch that show, but wanted to see this one.

My advice on managing a 2-year-old:  let her take the lead, within reason.  The Halloween our DS Rob(bie) was about that age, we didn't force him, but let him watch the kids come to the door and help pass out candy.  He thought it looked like fun, so we just plopped his Mickey Mouse ears on his head and took him to a couple of neighbors' houses.  That was enough and we didn't have to make a big production out of it.

Best interview weekend vibes to DR PennyO!

When I was being interviewed for my first professional librarian job, the director picked me up at the airport, drove me to campus, gave me a tour of the campus, introduced me to the ED, then took me to the library and said, "Now for the acid test."  I 'bout passed out before she told me that the acid test was coffee break with the library staff.  When I told them that, yes, I did know how to bake cookies, everyone relaxed a lot.

I listened at length to the new Revival recording of COMPANY last night.

Such a powerful score....some nice performances....Raul I thought did a fine Bobby.  However every time I listen to another recording of COMPANY I am compelled to listen again to the OBC.

I have a couple of questions about this latest revival...and yes, I know the actors played the music (what a terrible idea).

Who took the "doo doo da doo's" away from the girls in "Drive a Person Crazy" and made them part of the music?  Missed them a LOT!!!

Why why why is "Getting Married Today" sung at a tempo that I can only call "way too *&%^ing fast"?

And no one but Elaine Stritch should sing "Ladies Who Lunch" - so many of the performers on the OBC just OWN those songs.....or is it just because I have been listening to it for over 30 years?

Because EVERYBODY does "Getting Married Today" at a tempo that is "way too *&%^ing fast," that's why!

I blame the music directors, myself.  They're convinced that a rapid patter song has to be raced through, so they wave their arms as quickly as they can in the pit and everyone has to catch up.  And then the music director blames everyone else for the song sounding lousy.

If DR Jose ever takes over as music director of a production of Company, we'll know who to blame!

BK, do you (or anyone else, for that matter) want the password for the HHW Photobucket account that I created?  I won't post it, but I'll PM it.

The three photos that are still engrained in my mind are one from WW2 and two from Viet Name

WW2: The little Jewish boy in the Warshaw Ghetto who has his two hands raised over his head with a German soldier with his rifle pointed towards him. (Years later this photo led to the arrest of the soldier for war crimes. I do not know if the young boy survived)

Viet Nam #1: The police chief executing a young man with a bullet to the head. The soon to be deceased man's face is grimacing knowing what is about to come.

Viet Nam #2: A village was fire bombed by the Americans (I believe) and a young girl caught on fire. She ripped off her clothes and run down the street crying in pain.

I am sure there are others but these are three that came to my mind right away. If I had to think about it I pronbably would have added

John John's salute to his father.
There were so many images from 9/11 caught on video but the above three were moments frozen/captured in time.

Speaking of photographs and photographers, it seems to be a contest everyday which photo can get dislodged or sent askew most during the day as I wend my way back and forth down the hall in my chair or walker.    Maggie Smith and Mary Wickes have been winning the last day or so.  John Gielgud and Colleen Dewhurst still would be the champs.  Ben and Ant are always well-behaved, although Jason Graae acts up occasionally.

As far as photographers go, George Hurrell created magic.  Turnbull and Engstead (and  the immortal Bruno of Hollywood) did some wonderful things, but no one ever looked like anyone in a Hurrell photo. He made them appear as if made of silver dust .  Stardust, I guess.

Some subjects (Kim Novak, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn, among others) were made for the lens and some stars knew their crafts better than the photographers.

Also the first episode of Dante's Cove, Season 3.  The writing seems to have deteriorated, if that's even possible.  But then again, you don't watch Dante's Cove for the writing.  ;)

The writers seem to think there's some kind of mythology they've invented for the show, but I've never been able to quite figure out how it works. I just zone out over the guys and let the actors do their thing.without trying to make sense out of the plot.

The other involving the deaths of an entire family in Amityville. OK episode but nothing special. The zombie story was the more interesting of the two.

Finally, I finished watching the 1951 SCROOGE. It never fails to bring me to tears, and it did again today.

They've put back in some footage that has been cut over the years, obviously from another source (maybe a 16mm print) since its quality is not a match for the rest of the film, and the reinstated scenes are slightly tinted green, too.

Still, so glad to have this version which will likely stand as the definitive one on DVD for some time.

I had to endure an example of government bureaucracy at it's Zubrik stupidest. If you have had a pneumonia shot since turning 65, Medicare will not pay for another! I dislike silly government rules, but if we are to have rules, can they please be sensible! Better to have a rule that says you must have current preventative shots to
protect  your medicare benefits - not a rule that says they will not cover a Doctor recommended preventative shot!

I got back home at noon and had to finish creating our script for the fundraiser.  I then took it over to Staples and had it Xeroxed.  If we change the order it's very simple to deal with, as each song has its own pages of lyrics that aren't numbered in any way - we just have to remove and place them elsewhere.

MANY MANY VIBES TO DR PENNY O!!!!!!

I then went to the mail place and picked up Rupert Holmes' item for our silent auction, which is very cool.  He gave me a complete cut song from Drood, one I knew nothing about - it's six pages long and on the front page he's written a note explaining the history of the song and then he's signed it.

BK, I don't suppose you could secretly photocopy it and sell the copy/copies on the side??

I'm sleepy.  I've been "front loading" my weekly schedule so Monday-Wednesday are pretty crazy, Thursday is a little better and with any luck, nothing is set on Friday.   This week I managed to do just that. So, I am really looking forward to relaxing and just getting some work done at the office.  Not having any court dates or appointments really takes the stress off the day

Why why why is "Getting Married Today" sung at a tempo that I can only call "way too *&%^ing fast"?

I've read/heard several interviews with Stephen Sondheim who said that he wrote it so that it would be easier to sing if it's at a faster tempo.  I've heard it performed live VERY fast and the woman who sang it was very good.  But I love BK's "Maguire Sisters" version. ;)

As a kid, I always wondered what folks meant by "Clue Clucks Clan."  It never made any sense when I first heard it.  It made even less sense than that when I learned what it was.

(As Amy can avow, folks in the South often pronounced "Ku" as "Kloo").

I'm back from seeing a delightful show GREETINGS FROM YORKVILLE, which is essentially a review of songs performed by the writing couple Robert Grusecki (Music) and Anya Tucker (lyrics), with enough dialogue and some good staging to put the numbers into a story about their relationship.  As performers, I like their musicianship, quirky and distinctive voices with great pitch and diction, and I wish this show well.  DRJose and I were in an audience of no more than 25, and the theatre should be packed. I have their two albums, and I cannot recommend their writing and performances highly enough. A lot of the numbers are from the recordings but there are a couple of tasty items from their adaptation of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and I wish them and this show much good.  If you can get to it, do.

I came home tonight to a package from the UPS containing two boxes of Sees Peanut Brittle from my dear, dear Laurie "Queen of Outer Space" Mitchell! Oh, my gosh it is soooooooooooo goood!

I called her up to say thank you and we had a very nice chat. She told me that yesterday she got the outside of the house all decorated for Halloween and went out and bought a costume to wear (one of the witches from WICKED?!) and readied herself for the onslaught of trick or treaters...well, she waited and waited...and around 9 pm she got her one and only trick or treater and it was an infant in a baby carrier  ;D

Laurie's husband Ron laughed his head off!

They just moved to this neigborhood in Northridge a few months ago and she now realizes the whole block are just old people! LOL!

I spent the two hours before prime time started watching the first two episodes of BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ. It's a mini-series a la RICH MAN, POOR MAN with thirteen episodes and a two hour epilogue.

I've enjoyed the first two segments (they each have run more than an hour each. The first was almost 90 minutes and the second about 65 minutes.)

Very disappointed with the quality. Supposedly these 1980 programs have been remastered, but they still look very dated, often soft, lots of brackish color, grain issues. The characters are interesting enough to take one's mind away from the video imperfections, but I've a long way to go to get through the set and will have to learn to like the look of these episodes.

I had thought I might watch LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT "live," but since GREY'S didn't wind up until 7 minutes past the hour, I watched SMALLVILLE off the DVR.

Finally an episode where Kara isn't intolerable to watch. Well, she is for the first half of the show, but looks like they're working out her anger issues.

Great to see Helen Slater (Kara in the SUPERGIRL movie) guesting as Clark's real mother. Hope they can find a way to work her character back into more episodes down the road. Really enjoyed her presence on the show tonight.

I'm really not feeling well, tummy-wise.  Again, I think it's all stress-related, but it's really irksome.  I've been working most of the night on the entrances and exits diagrams, so that I have them for tomorrow.  Having these enables me to see how the show will flow in terms of comings and goings and goings and comings.  Our PowerPoint stuff should be finished this evening, then I just have to find someone to operate - the difficult thing is I have to know whether the cyc is always going to be visible or whether there will be occasional times when I have a black curtain down in front of it - do any of you understand PowerPoint?  Because right now we've got black slides after each pic - but will those show up as black against the white cyc?  I know we had similar things between the slides in NY but they never showed up black, just neutral.  But she could also do white slides between pics, but only if the cyc is always there.  Anyone know?

Did you get an answer to you itunes question? If you buy an album, the whole album downloads into your itunes. I've been afraid to upgrade to 7.2 because that started my woes a few months ago. I think you can download album art sometimes, too, but I like having the liner notes, so I usually will buy the real CD unless it's something I have to have immediately.

I'm really not feeling well, tummy-wise.  Again, I think it's all stress-related

But bk, why in the world would you be feeling any stress? You are only doing the work of 10 people!

I had a wonderful time in White Christmas land.  It turned out that today was the big "meet and greet" for the Toronto and Boston companies - the two "major sanctioned" productions this season.  So, after an initial rehearsal with the MD and the wonderful Peter Reardon, we had the "meet and greet".

I have to say that Walter Bobbie gave one of the funniest and most heartfelt "Welcome To Camp" speeches I've ever heard.  It made me a little sad to know that I'm just with the company for a few days, but also very lucky to be with the company for just these few days.  Also in attendance at today's gathering were some folks from R&H as well as Irving Berlin's daughter, Elizabeth Peters.

I spent most of today playing rehearsals for Peter (he's playing Bob this year, his first time in the role), as well as Jeffrey Denman and Meredith Patterson (who were reviewing their material, as well as learning some new steps here and there).  I had a wonderful time playing playing some great arrangements of some great music.  And tomorrow, more of the same.  :)

Sad but true.

Hmmm, he can share the closet with all my Matt and Missy/ JnJ tapes... Another World and my two lonely Search for tomorrow tapes. I would someday love to get Matt's run from that show.

One of our newscasters has a son who's a college freshman and is interested in political cartooning. I wanted to do a change of address announcement, but also recognize the fact that we have been planning to move for 14 years and people have given up thinking we ever would. So in honor of everyone who said it would be a cold day in hell when we actually move, I asked him to draw us a cartoon for the announcement:

DP and I shall be seeing "Spamalot" in three weeks time.

We watched a DVD of the Broadway cast earlier this week.
(Yes! it was one of those.)

Tom, I got to see the show in St. Paul and it was excellent. I also have the CD of the original cast. Have fun!

And it also turns out that The Brain's own Richard Pruitt and Chad Harlow are also in the Boston company.

DR MBarnum - As DR edisaurus just indicated, when you purchase and album from iTunes you are just purchasing digital music files of each song on the CD.  -Consequently, for most CDs, you can also just purchase individual tracks.  You do not receive and actual hard copy (CD disc).  A lot of the iTunes offerings now offer digital booklets, and some iTunes releases will have special "iTunes only" content.

Personally, I still like buying real CDs, but when I've needed to listen/reference a song on short notice, iTunes has really come in handy.

*Of course, if you wish, after you download a CD, you can then burn a cop to a CD-ROM.

I did some work before I left for the Asford residence.  Our publicist had sent me mapquest directions as I had no idea where they were.  Well, these directions were about as stupid as you could get.  It put me at least six miles from where I was actually going.  I finally got there, we took some photographs and then I left.

Yahoo still has one going on I35W in Mpls crossing the Mississippi.... One problem, the bridge collapsed in August...

I often question those maps

I e-mailed Itunes customer support and they gave me a link to download 7.2. I haven't tried it yet. The main reason I wanted to order the album that I was attempting to get was because I cannot seem to locate and actual CD of it...although I know it does exist. It is for a Punjabi pop group called HUNTERZ. Itunes has two of there albums available. I will make an attempt this weekend.

As for "Getting Married Today"...

I like it fast!  It's meant to be sung fast.  And, yes, even though there are all those words, the lyric is constructed in such a way that you don't necessarily have to hear each and every word to get the jokes.  You hear the "ideas", so to speak.  And that's what makes it a brilliant lyric.  Of course, if the singer had bad diction, well...

As much as loved Madeleine Kahn, I thought her rendition at the Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert was way too slow.  And then there's Julie Andrews' rendition from Putting It Together... I'm not too hot on that one either.  I loved Heather Laws rendition in the recent revival.  However, my all-time favorite Amy has to be Alice Ripley during the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration.  Truly a wacky, unhinged and strangely sympathetic performance.  -Of course, while she sang the number, Matt Bogart was standing on stage in white boxer shorts, so... ;)

And, yes, DR elmore and I did attend Greetings From Yorkville earlier tonight.  What a wonderful show.  Great songs, great performers.  -And some surprisingly lavish production values too.  -I mean when you're lighting has been designed by Natasha Katz, well...

Unfortunately, Baayork was supposed to attend tonight too, but it turned out that she had a few "emergencies" to take care of tonight.  She's OK, but there's just still a ton of coordinating to take care of for Thommie Walsh's memorial service.  And one of the new swings for A Chorus Line ended up going on tonight too - two days ahead of schedule - so she had to check in at the Schoenfeld as well tonight.  -She sends her regrets, Larry.

Well... Six hours from now I should be stepping into the gym, but I'm seriously considering foregoing the gym tomorrow morning in exchange for an extra hour of sleep - especially since I have another full rehearsal day ahead of me.  And then tomorrow night, I believe I will be going out to dinner with my two youngest brothers, Jay and Michael.  Jay will be running the NYC Marathon on Sunday, and Mike is coming up to cheer him on - as well as hang out with some of his Coast Guard buddies who now live in NYC.  (And then it's another rehearsal day on Sunday, then some meetings on Sunday, plus cheering my brother at the marathon, then Disney on Monday and Tuesday....)  In any case...  I need some sleep.  Now.  Tonight.

Goodnight.
