Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wacky, and now it is time for you to post until the wacky cows come home.

TOD -

I found it interetsing when, at the Liberace Museum in Vegas, at the portion of the exhibit with all the news clippings, a lady asked quite forcefully "Did he ever marry?"

(BTW:  Her friend answered, "You mean George?" referring to Liberace's brother.)

A funny conversation overheard was a co-worker talking to a woman on the phone:

"You don't want to talk to me?  What's the problem?  Come on, what did I do?  You're upset about something. Tell me.  (pause)  OK, goodbye, Mom!"

SB 2:  Yeh, my mom loves him.

I don't recall anything weird or outrageous that I've overhead.  [I'm sure there are a few, but they are lost in memory.]

However, I do remember the time that I stubbed my toe so badly that I thought I'd broken it.  I went to the emergency room.  The nurse looked at my royal purple toe and asked, "Is this the toe?"

I laughed so hard, the pain went away.

Of course, then there was the time that Eddie Cannizzaro confessed to me that he was the guy who pulled the trigger on "Bugsy" Siegel.

That was pretty outrageous...and also pretty scary.

Of course, I love my pancake quote that I have mentioned here a few times.

Also, one day Sandra and I were walking in a store and a young man and two young women passed us. He to said to them, "I didn't even put the fish on the shelf." We had no idea what he meant.

Good morning, all! I have a blood test as 10:45 and then I'm off to Toyland for some research, to drop off some books and papers, and to bring home a few items.

Tonight, I'm dining at Chez Josephine on 42nd Street with friends I've not seen in at least 5 years. I'm a bit embarrassed because I really wanted to go to Chez Napoleon and I gave them the wrong name! I'm too old to say blame it on my youth.

Saturday morning greetings!  Survived another 30 minutes with my aerobic dancing tape and will soon get cleaned up and start packing for our week in NYC.  Rob's here for the weekend and has told me that he thinks he has the cable we need to transfer my cassette to my iTunes library - yay!

The other thing I have to do today is send my "Save Ohio's Libraries" email to the 6 members of the Ohio House and Senate Conference Committees that are meeting tomorrow morning on the Governor's budget recommendations.  He seems not to have heard the outcry.

"A medium."

TOD - Overheard near the OBCR section at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cincinnati, a teenage boy trying to impress a teenage girl with his musical theatre knowledge:  "This is The Fantasticks - can you believe it was written by TOM JONES?"  I didn't have the heart to tell him it's a different Tom Jones.  He also said the only piece of scenery is a step-ladder, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

The site where I work to write reviews is going to a new server and format next week, and I was on the dummy board this morning trying to post a review and continually getting stymied with the software. I'd get the review written and ready to post, but when I'd hit the button to post, my screen would go brown/gray and nothing was happening plus all the work was lost.

They may be getting a lot fewer reviews from me if I can't figure out what's going on here. Argh!

FLASHPOINT was preempted last night when my local CBS affiliate showed a movie instead from 9-11. They did run it in the early morning hours (naturally, the recorded broadcast will be SD and not HD) and I recorded it, so I may or may not watch it while I eat lunch today depending on whether the DVR captured the entire show. I didn't set it to go over the estimated time of recording.

If I decide not to watch it, I'll have THE FASHION SHOW from Thursday night I can watch while I eat lunch.

Greetings from Toyland! The AC is running and it's quite refreshing and cool. I've got some writing to do before I catch the bus uptown.

I've been sending emails to my frien  Kim Kowalke and they keep bouncing back to me; I understand that the Musicals in Mufti KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY is being recorded with 2 pianos, and I think that's terrible. Here's a chance for a real recording of the score and an orchestra should be used. The new Kurt Weill Edition to my knowledge hasn't even added KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY to its priority list of editions, I don't believe, and if they're waiting to record the completed with a band, I could be long dead: the KWE was announced arond 1993, and we've been waiting for over 12 years for the editions of LADY IN THE DARK and ONE TOUCH OF VENUS!

DR DAW - Right now, The High Line is only open from 7:00am-10:00pm.  I'm not sure if there are plans to eventually keep it open 24 hours, but that may change once the rest of it - up to 31st Street - opens up at the end of next year.

*Because of the Renegade Cabaret last night, I ended up staying until The High Line closed.  The park rangers started clearing everyone out at 9:45pm, and there was one particularly "emphatic" ranger who was trying to make sure everyone cleared out on time. Thankfully, her "entreaties" had a tinge of humor to them instead of NYC-rudeness.  Although, maybe NYC-rudeness is humorous to me now.  ;)

NCL is a good cruise line.  However, some of their ships are better than others.  See if you can track down reviews for the exact itinerary and ship that you will be on.

I've sailed on NCL once, and had a wonderful time. I believe another DR or two may have had a different experience.

Is it too late to change the restaurant? the reservation? The two restaurants aren't that far from each other - Chez J is on 42nd, and Chez N is on 50th.

We would be sailing on the "Star" making stops at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.  Reviews about that ship and itinerary have ranged from -
"Best food I have ever had on a cruise" to "I didn't know scrambled eggs were meant to be a soup"
and
"Servers were outstanding and so helpful" to "Servers were pushy and seemed intent only on separating you from your money."

In short, they varied widely.

So, we were all awakened by this loud sawing.  And there has been total silence since then.  Which begs the question - what was so bloody important and time-pressing that they couldn't wait until ten?  We don't hear hammering, we don't hear yammering, no, we just hear an electric saw at eight-thirty in the morning and then NOTHING.

Simple: The workers start their shift before you wake up. They want to get their work done in a timely manner, and on their schedule. And once that "loud" work is done - sawing, hammering, etc. - then they're done.  Then maybe they move onto sanding, painting, checking for proper fit - quiet work.

And if they had started at 10:00 wouldn't that then have interfered with some music-listening or movie-watching?

I don't envy your current position - nor the similar one that DRs JMK, DerBrucer and SWW are in - but I'm sure you know full well that there's nothing you can do about.  Well, you can complain - which you have been. But that's not going to make it go away.

Next time, just go ahead and run out of your house, go over there and give them what for!  -Now that would be something I'd like to read about! ;)

Wondering aloud if Ginny and Richard might have any time, for even a quick mini-HHW-get-together here, even if it's only a quick get-together between their shows.  We could do Wednesday the 1st or Thursday the 2nd.

We're seeing the HAIR matinee on Wednesday and keeping Wednesday and Thursday evenings open to try to see TWELFTH NIGHT with DRs Elmore and Jose, depending on weather forecasts.  We have back-up show desires for those evenings, but no definite plans.

DR Ginny et al - If you and DH Richard are in the mood for some classic movie musicals, you could always head to the Walter Reade for this:

A Musical Marathon
July 3-5, 2009
ALL SINGIN', ALL DANCIN', ALL WEEKEND
(http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale/musicalmarathon.html)

"To celebrate the 50th anniversary of America’s premier arts center, The Film Society offers up a full weekend of movie musicals reflecting the richness of Lincoln Center music, dance, and theater on the silver screen."

It's quite the line-up of movies - and only $40/30 for a Festival Pass.

"Singin' in the Rain"
"Grease" (Sing-along)
"Top Hat"
"Viva Las Vegas"
"Ziegfeld Follies"
"Cabaret"
"Purple Rain"
"Meet Me in St. Louis"
"The Gang's All Here"
"Swing Time"
"The King and I"
"Love Me Or Leave Me"
"Pal Joey"
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
"Oliver!"
"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"
"An American In Paris"
"On the Town"
"Hair"
"Tommy"

Ann, before I get sued by Norwegian Cruises, let me say that if you have never taken a cruise before, and it is a seven day Mexican cruise, you should have a wonderful time.  That is provided that you get a good price for the cruise.  At this moment, it is the best time for people looking to try a cruise experience.  All of the cruise lines are offering lower prices and various extras to get people on board their ships.

If you are going with friends, and you are going to enjoy yourself and Mexico with those friends; then I say go for it.

DR JoseSPiano - does The High Line have operating hours, or is it open 24/7?

Although, maybe NYC-rudeness is humorous to me now.  ;)

I'm wondering if DR DAW would like to visit the High Line next week and if DR Jose would like to escort some out-of-towners on an excursion?

OH!

And not only has City Bakery set up carts on The High Line, but the Van Leeuwen Artisan Truck is now stationed down there too.  -As well as the Rickshaw Dumpling Truck and the Treats Truck.  Dinner!  ;)

As I said, I'm not sure this morning's travesty was next door - otherwise I do believe I would have gone over there this morning.  The good news is that the construction is going very quickly - the structure is built and I'd say that come September the house will basically be finished on the exterior.

LOL, thanks TCB.  Jed and I have cruised before, we went with Royal Caribbean for our honeymoon cruise and really enjoyed ourselves.  We have never been down to Mexico, though.  The prices are quite low right now, and I think if we do decide to book it, we will go with the intention of spending time with friends and seeing the sights and keep low expectations for the cruise itself.  That way we might be pleasantly surprised.

So...

The last bit of "old" furniture to be cleared out upstairs was a bed. A big bed. So, that got moved out to the sidewalk earlier this morning. Of course, the landlord just came by to tell me that she's going to get ticketed by the Sanitation Department for putting out large refuse after the trash pick-up.  -And the Sanitation Dept has been doing a lot of ticketing lately.  However, since it's not my bed, and since I didn't move it out there, well...

Not. My. Problem.

OH!

For any DR who might be interested in this...

There's a "silent Flash Mob" scheduled for 5:00 in Times Square.  It will sort of be along the lines of one of those Improv Everywhere "pranks", however, this one will be a tribute to Michael Jackson. So..

Just arrive in Times Square before 5:00 - costumes encouraged.  Have your iPod with you, and have the 5:57 version of "Thriller" cued up.  When you hear the whistle blow, start dancing the "Thriller" choreography!

:D

I'm not planning on participating, but I'm hoping to make it down there to take pics.

*Apparently, due to an error on Time Out New York's site yesterday, a good bunch of people showed up yesterday - some in costume.  It will be interesting to see how many people show up today.

Tonight, I'm dining at Chez Josephine on 42nd Street with friends I've not seen in at least 5 years. I'm a bit embarrassed because I really wanted to go to Chez Napoleon and I gave them the wrong name! I'm too old to say blame it on my youth.

Is it too late to change the restaurant? the reservation? The two restaurants aren't that far from each other - Chez J is on 42nd, and Chez N is on 50th.

I'm looking forward to dining at Chez Josephine, biut I do like Chez Napoleon.

For months, a copy of The Fantasticks in some store here was filed in the Pop Singer section.

I never had the guts to move it to the Broadway section, thinking it might sell better in the wrong one ... but it stayed there for ... months!

Isn't Maria Friedman and the London Cast a complete recording?

After we come back from Long Island I will be cancelling cable. We have had the digital converter box hooked up for two weeks and are quite happy with the reception. It can be problematic with some channels if the weather is bad but even with rain we have good reception and all the broadcast channels including Channel 13. We have a weather channel. New York One is nice but I'll live without On Stage and I can watch all the CUNY Working in the Theatre programs on line. In the future we may get Channel 21 (another PBS station from Long Island) if the power boost request they made comes through but if not, so be it.

$25 X 12 = $300

Instead, I watched Thursday night's edition of THE FASHION SHOW. It was a tricky week for the designers. They were assigned a famous classic designer to do an homage outfit in honor of. The problem for one of the designers was that he wasn't the least bit familiar with Halston, and did a dress that was totally NOT Halston and almost got eliminated.

I agreed that for someone with his talent, it wasn't really fair to eliminate him due to his ignorance of a designer's style. (The girl who got sent home was completely familiar with Yves Saint Laurent's style and messed up her design royally.) This was a week I think they did the right thing eliminating whom they did.

So, I started with the bonus features of SPACEBALLS. It began with a "making of" documentary that was 30 minutes long. This was done in 2005 looking back on the making of the movie, so people like John Candy were not available to be interviewed. Pretty good overview of the production process for the movie.

I also found it interesting that Mel Brooks sent George Lucas a copy of the script before they began filming to make sure George wasn't going to be offended by the potshots they were taking at STAR WARS. According to Mel, he loved it.

I know there are trailers and a gag reel that I haven't gotten to yet. Not sure how much else is on the disc.

All of the bonus material was in 480i, so I'm eager to see what the movie looks like in 1080p. Haven't seen any of it in HD yet.

I have been watching the Barbara Walters Farrah Fawcett special (why I have no idea).  Part 1, 2, 3 & 4 and more: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=7931205

This goes on and on, guess it was a full hour.  I can’t watch anymore.  The first part is old clips and interviews.  Mostly this is just a tear jerker without much insight.

Beverley just played my review of the Tonys. I'll send out the e-mail blast to those of you on the list giving you specifics.

Believe it or not, I am actually working on the next version of the CD. I'm a bit behind but I hope by mid-Summer to have it in the hands of those who want it, you know who you are :)

I'm at work now and have caught up with all of yesterday's posts, but not today's posts...I did, however, read BK's notes and will have to think about the Topic of the Day.

Last night's "Romeo & Juliet" was almost exactly three hours long (about 3:05)!  We're picking up the pace and shortening it each day!  After last night's performance, we had a cast party at Lady Montague's house.  I left at about 2:00 a.m., and was one of the first to leave. ::) I don't doubt that it went on for at least a couple more hours.  Tonight, we're having ANOTHER cast party, and since I have nothing to do tomorrow, I can stay as long as I want. :D

Isn't Maria Friedman and the London Cast a complete recording?

Yes, and the orchestra parts are the ones that have been around forever. The new KWE edition of LADY IN THE DARK has not yet been published and it was announced over 12 years ago.

It doesn't seem like the Taste of Tacoma is drawing the usual number of patrons.  There are a lot of people, but I am quite sure the crowd is much smaller.  I know a lot of people were thinking that it was scheduled for next weekend.

And on a personal note, holding the Taste on the same weekend as Seattle Gay Pride seems to have cut my viewing options.

bk - So... Suppose you needed some work done on your house - work that required loud noises.  What time would you schedule it to take place?

*And just be thankful that whatever noises you've been dealing with have only lasted for a couple of minutes a day, and not throughout the whole day.  -I remember when they put in the new water lines up in my 'hood last year.  Those jackhammers were out in two-hour shifts.  Now that's LOUD!

DR Jose - I've just printed the Weather Channel 10-day forecast for NYC and it looks to me like Thursday might be the best day, weather-wise, to try for TWELFTH NIGHT.  What do you think?

DR Ginny - We seem to be in that cycle where the rain pops up in the afternoon, and then it clears right up - much like Orlando.  ;)  So...

I happened to go by the Delacorte today while I was walking through Central Park, and I overheard the staff saying that today's line was quite long, and that the chance for stand-by tickets - at least for tonight, would be slim.  I guess now that the reviews are out...

It's probably best to go ahead and try for Wednesday and/or Thursday.  But it's probably best to keep checking how the weather forecast changes over the next few days and just take it from there.  *We just had a brief soaking downpour here, and another one is due in later tonight.  Unpredictable.

DAW - Actually the sightseeing is not that great today.  But Nicky is enjoying being out on the balcony.

Well, the "sightseeing" on the Great Lawn in Central Park today was quite "great". Needless to say, I took my time walking across, through and around the Great Lawn today.  ::)

OK, you know best, but it sounds like you're saying we should start trying on Wednesday.  Fine with us, but, remember, we have HAIR tickets for the matinee.  We could take the morning shift standing in line.  Is it to our advantage that we're working with week nights instead of weekends?

Gotcha. I forget, were you going to try to see another show Wednesday night?  In any case...

Why don't we do this:

-Wednesday - We all should register for the Virtual Line: me, you, DH Richard, DR elmore (Ben, DAW -?).  They "winners" are announced at 1:00, so you'd know before your matinee if you're going to see another show that night.  -And if not enough of us "win", then the tickets can just go back into the stand-by pile.

-Thursday - If we don't end up seeing the show Wednesday night - We can meet in the Park. -And, yes, weekdays are always better for seeing show in The Park since it's a "school night" - and since the show runs till 11:00.

They were sweet, and quite tender - with still a bit of snap in them.  During my trips down to the Greenmarket lately, I've been buying a handful of snap peas as a snack - just eat them right out of the bag.

And of course who introduced the ORIGINAL song in vaudeville?

Mr William Frawley!

Here at long last :) is my Gov. Mark Sanford CAROLINA PARODY lyric on YouTube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAFeLTchV8c

Hope you like it!  Please pass the link around if you do.   (And all kind ratings and comments are happily accepted, too, if anyone has time to do that, please, please, please)

Any references to South Carolina as boring are meant to be in the mind of the character, not my own opinion!!!

Brava Fred. It was really great and I love the rhymes.

Isn't Maria Friedman and the London Cast a complete recording?

Yes, and the orchestra parts are the ones that have been around forever. The new KWE edition of LADY IN THE DARK has not yet been published and it was announced over 12 years ago.

Thanks for the feedback.

I went to the website and it is a general page and nothing specific on Lady in Dark. Can you guide me to the correct article?

My high school friend Keith spoke of Fred Mertz's chutzpah, saying "Who was Fred Mertz to call Ethel fat?  She had a lovely figure."

Had some interesting viewing experiences tonight.

First, I finished the bonus features on the SPACEBALLS disc. It wasn't a gag reel that was on the disc; it was a selection of continuity errors/production gaffes which are still in the movie. Kind of honest of them to popint them out.

There were also a couple of trailers for the movie (one for exhibitors with a Mel Brooks introduction).

There were some storyboard-to-film split screen comparisons.

Then I finally got around to watching the movie. Not one of Brooks' best or worst, there are some funny parody ideas, but the execution is often not well thought out and he seems to go for a cheap laugh all too often (like dropping the S-bomb at every opportunity) or a succession of groin/crotch jokes.

The Blu-ray isn't a stellar transfer either. So a mixed bag for this release.

Certainly though, since the only version of it I had was the laserdisc, I'm glad to have this in the archives now.

I had the movie HANCOCK recorded in HD on the DVR, but I decided I'd watch a DVD - THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS.

Now THERE is a beautiful transfer! Gorgeous black and white encode for that film. Really superb!

After it was over, I shut everything off because I still had to write the entire SPACEBALLS review, and it seemed harder to write tonight than usual. I think I'm very tired.

And, yes, DR Jane, it was all quite dee-lish! :)

:)  The sandwich looks yummy.  I'm not big on raw snap peas in the pod.

They were blanched. :)

Unfortunately I need my veggies cooked a bit more.  Were they sweet?  We haven't seen any good snap peas yet & Keith didn't plant a garden this year.

I got some at the farmer's market here last weekend.    they were wonderfukl and sweet

Well, now that the yellow countertops are going, the yellow walls must be changed to something else.   I have looked at tile, wallpaper, all sorts of backsplashes and I just don't know what I'm going to do.   I have decided that the soffit and the upper area of the walls will be painted.  So I wetn paint shopping tonight. It's more difficult than I thought to find a color that will go with everything I've chosen and with the floor I'm not changing at this time.

I think I found one that will work, but i need to see it in the daylight to be sure.

So that's a long way of saying I was back at Home Depot tonight.   I've been to all the do it yourself shops and a couple decorating stores today. I was pleased to see that I couldn't have gotten a better deal somewhere else.

Work tomorrow.  Oh well.

I hooked up my OPTICAL cable to my Blu Ray player and watched a bit of TWILIGHT, the sound is certainly much more balanced....but with fans and airconditioning running, it's hard to HEAR anything around here right now....you can't really judge how audio sounds until later in the fall.

Darling Jose, perhaps you've been on the planet Mars for the last five weeks.  It's not ten minutes of noise.  The first two weeks it was house-shaking tear down bulldozing noise, the equivalent of a six point earthquake.  After that, the noise starts at seven and continues until four or five in the afternoon.
