Well, you've read the notes, the notes said a little prayer, and now it is time for you to post until the praying cows come home.

People may complain about the government intrusion into our private lives, but in arresting a suspect in his alleged failed attempt to blow up a SUV in NY's Time Square I am grateful for whatever method they used to track down the person.

I have an odd kvetchy feeling that seems to have taken hold of me.  A little research makes me wonder if it might be a pinched nerve, with maybe even a little carpal-tunnel thrown in.  I have not typed my birthday thank-yous yet, and will do so - but for a little while, I may just read and not type much.

DR Elmore - your Fantasticks report brought tears to my eyes.  FYI, they're still using the Shelterhouse for smaller productions and I've even been to meetings there.  The Playhouse complex has changed a lot since I started going there 35 years ago.

DR ELMORE I love The Fantasticks as well....even though the production I worked on was plagued with an ineffective director which caused ALL of the actors to begin to direct themselves and each other.....

And the man playing one of the fathers quit, so the Mortimer moved up to his part and I got to play Mortimer which was more fun than EVER......."The audience used to cry out 'Die again, Mortimer...die again!'.....but of course, I never did."  And when I got "killed" during the Sword Fight I always had a different expression....the two most popular being "Bloody 'ell" and "That was unexpected!"

Good morning, all! I was very tired last night, although the jerk above me managed to wake me by letting his door slam shut at 1:45 am when he returned home to stomp about the apartment for another 30 minutes or so. At some point after that, I went back to sleep and slept late, for me, tlll 8:45 this morning. On top of all that I had inventory dreams about working at The Drama Book Shop.

Today I have little to accomplish beyond undating reports, so I may do some laundry in a bit as well. I really would like to go back to sleep, but I don't want to screw up my sleeping times more than my neighbor already has.

Best Featured Actor in a Musical - Christopher Fitzgerald

I'm glad that my predictions that ADDAMS FAMILY would be in the Best Musical category and that Kristen Chenoweth would get a Best Actress nom did not come true.  At least the Wing showed some restraint in nominating for the sake of supporting hits.

Also, Addams Family was nominated for Best Score and that was the one thing almost every single review/critic agreed on, that the score was the weakest part of the show! I'm glad for Kevin Kevin Chamberlin (I've always liked his work) but wow! I'm seeing the show May 11th.

Good morning!

It was overcast this morning because we were supposed to get some more rain, but that never happened. It's clearing now and is going to be in the mid-80s today which I kind of dread. The house will begin heating up and I'm going to have to turn on the A/C much sooner than I'd like.

Well... American Idiot did pick up nominations for Lighting Design and Scenic. Strangely enough, not for Sound Design.

*I believe the true ensemble nature of the show basically made cancelled out it's chances in the other major categories.

I did notice looking at the Tony noms how they tried to spread the wealth. I was disappointed that Cheyenne didn't sneak into the best actor list but since Nathan Lane didn't either, I guess I shouldn't be surprised some big names didn't make it. (At least Cheyenne did get a Drama Desk nom.)

And, of course, the Tony committee eliminated its chance for a score nomination last week, so that omission was no surprise either.

Lillias White, Fela!

Even though my family is in the jewelry business, I've never been one for jewelry.

I still wear the watch I was given for my high school graduation (over 40 years ago) and it still runs fast.

Right after my father died, back in the mid-1960s, I wore his diamond ring for about a year, then put it into a safety deposit box, where it remained until just before I moved to Austin when I let my brother have it.

The best thing about having a family in the jewelry business is that, when you want to give your wife a nice gift, you can get it for much less than wholesale.

Knowing Jonathan, I'm sure it's all new. He may have dragged out his old scores for reference but he's probably got all new routines and keys to deal with in all the original songs, two interpolations, and all new dance music. I'm sure he earned every penny and he was the production's best choice to orchestrate.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I still miss my high school class ring. I believe I left it on a practice room piano one too many times during college.  The first time, it was turned into the office - thankfully, my name was engraved "inside". The second time, well... :(

When I was in grade school, I bought a crucifix at the National Cathedral, and I wore that around my neck for years. I believe it's sitting in my mom's jewelry box.

I have a ring that I wear occasionally - it's a titanium band with a streak of blue in the middle. Alas, every time I take it off to play, I usually don't end up putting it back on my finger until I find it in the bottom of my bag a few weeks, if not months later.

This is a serious question. Why do you (and/or other musicians) take off your ring(s) or jewelry when you're playing an instrument?

This is a serious question. Why do you (and/or other musicians) take off your ring(s) or jewelry when you're playing an instrument?

And here is your serious answer:

Unless it's a simple wedding band, most rings interfere with the range of motion of the fingers. Depending on the instrument one plays, they can also rub up against the other fingers while playing.  Additionally, even though they (can) weigh next to nothing, that extra weight can affect one's "balance".

*There were always stories that Liberace used his rings as "weights" - as if he was building up the muscles in his fingers.  He could play faster without them on. ;)

My sister in NC is going through a rough spell.  Her husband had to declare bankruptcy with his business and he is now needing emergency surgery for a troubling condition which I won't go into here.  They have had to sell their home in Raleigh and are moving permanently to their "vacation" home on Emerald Isle.  They certainly have enough money to retire on comfortably, but they're having their share of problems right now.

Other than a mood ring back when I was in 6th grade, I have not had jewelry until just the last few years.

Now I have two necklaces from Nepal, one features Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion and the other has the "om mani padme hum" on it. I also have a bracelet with the same mantra on it.

I usually try to wear one of the three just to remind me to be compassionate towards others. It comes in handy when driving in traffic or shopping in a crowded store.

I have a ring with an Om sign on it, but I find it somewhat uncomfortable to wear, so I usually don't.

I do have a nice, inexpensive watch by Fossil that I often get compliments on.

I was hoping to hear some good jewelry stories, but many here are like me - I have 0.  I never wore my wedding ring, I have never worn a wristwatch or chain or bracelet, and I have only owned one ring since I've been eighteen - a fantastic opal in a simple setting - and I wore that until I did the pilot with George Kennedy in 1979 - I lost it on that shoot and have never worn a stitch of jewelry since.

TOD:  Not much for jewelry. I worked for a costume jewelry company once. Made me appreciate the good stuff, which I can't afford. I took my wedding ring off when my fingers were swelling when I was expecting DR Sandra. My fingers never did get small enough after that to wear it again. I wear only one pair of small 14k earrings

I almost had a spit take moment at work today.

The text of a grant came in on a Foundation's grant list. The indexer looked at the grant and it went through a spell check program AND it was looked at by a human being. It took a third human being, who was looking at the grant for a different reason, to catch the "error". No spell check program would have caught this.

I think there is a Freudian slip somewhere in this text  ;D

DR Ben - As for Van Leeuwen, if the Red Currants and Cream is available - GET IT! Otherwise, their Mint Chip, Strawberry, Ginger or Earl Grey.

The BGICT will be back out tomorrow.  Doug had three big events this past weekend, and he's still at home recovering from them.  *You can check for the trucks location and schedule on Twitter: http://twitter.com/biggayicecream or check for updates on their SITE (http://www.biggayicecreamtruck.com/).

It's a shame my sister is not here to discuss today's TOD.  She has not one, not two, but three of those jewelry amoires.  She is especially fond of opals and Southwestern/Indian style turquoise.

Some jewelry lore I have heard over the years:

Do not give onyx as a gift--it brings bad luck.

Pearls bring tears.

Opals will bring bad luck if they are not your birthstone.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend.

I guess I'm the only one here who loves jewelry.  I always wear a watch and wish i had more watches since i love them.

From about age 10-30 i used to wear rings every single day. I just don't like the feeling of them anymore (to wear them all the time).

For a while i was very into costume jewelry (like the brand GUESS).  I have a bunch of rings, necklaces, earrings. But i find most of them too heavy now.

I don't usually wear jewelry except on the weekends or if i'm going to a special event.  I love bracelets. I mostly alternate now between a few necklaces and earrings.

My father owned and operated a jewelry store for many years, and I also had quite a few pairs of beautiful cuff links when I wore lots of French-style cuffs in the 1970s. Eventually, however, I just opted for regular long sleeved shirts and had no further use for those links. I still have them, of course, but they're not being used.

Then I watched today's work project TOOTH FAIRY. The wideranging story was as predictable as could be - went every place you expected it to and that was exactly as I expected. However, contained within this predictable, rather trite structure were some imaginative sequences that made me laugh and I really enjoyed. I wish the entire film could have had the same imagination and freshness that some individual sequences had.

And I do love that Dwayne Johnson ("The Rock") has no self-consciousness about wearing tutus or tights. It's great that he's so comfortable with his masculinity that he mocks his virile image every chance he gets.

There were more special features than I was expecting. Some were geared to kids (a workout section) and some geared to adults (explainations of the different kinds of special effects used in the movie). There was also a fun commentary by director Michael Lembeck who always does a good, enthusiastic job describing his movies. I enjoyed listening to about an hour of it.

Our stalker posted, and then the posts (two) were removed by the owner of FSM - he knew what she was doing and wasn't having any of it.  He e-mailed her and told her to not engage me on the board - and he said her response was reasonable - which is, of course, classic psychotic behavior - do your harm, then act innocent as if there's no real problem.  Note to stalker: No one's having any of it.  Then the owner of the FSM board had some words to say about the fellow who caused the ruckus in the first place, which basically told the tale that all of us who know this guy ultimately tell - then he locked the thread.

Her posts basically tried to shift all blame on to me - what she always does.  How I was the one who was causing the problem, I was the bad person, and then just making suppositions which had no basis in truth and which she couldn't possibly know about.  But this is her life.  She follows me from site to site waiting for an opportunity to do her thing.  Today, she read the notes and immediately went to the FSM board to cause trouble.  She obviously has a bug up her rectal cavity about me, although I do not really know why.  But she comes every day, reads every notes, reads every post, looking for ways in which she can try to cause trouble.  Well, you know what - let's hash it out.  Be a reasonable human being - e-mail me, tell me what the real problem is, and I will respond without rancor.  But that won't be happening.  I fully expect more of this to be happening and none of it's going to work, I'm afraid.

T.O.D.

Many, many years ago I had a beautiful imperial ruby ring in a setting that was designed for me by a jeweler.  Sadly, it went the way of the pawn shop back when I was married.  I now have a gold ring that I wear from time to time that always gets noticed.  Oh and I have a couple of wedding rings that I dig out when I have to be married in a play.

I also have a thing for watches.  I love unusual watches.  I have had a great many dazzling watches over the years.  The unfortunate part of that is that I am extremely hard on watches.

Topic of the Day:  I used to wear my college class ring, but I haven't in many years.  But one thing I do wear all the time is my Until There's a Cure (http://www.until.org/) bracelet.  I did an AIDS benefit in Tacoma in 1996 and each cast member was given one.  I didn't start wearing it regularly until sometime in early 1997, but I've been wearing it ever since.  This is what it used to look like...mine is not this shiny any more ;) :

At the time we got these, the only ones available were silver plated, sterling silver and I think a completely gold plated bracelet (although there isn't a gold-plated bracelet now, so I could be wrong about that).  Now, they have so many options (http://www.until.org/order.shtml) from which to choose!

TOD - Of course, my favorite jewelry is my wedding set, which I only take off to mix meatloaf with my hands.  I always wear a ring on my right hand, too.  Depending on my clothing palate:

--the pink cameo that my grandfather gave my grandmother in a pendant and my aunt had reset into a ring for my high school graduation

--the black onyx with a silver University of Michigan seal that my parents gave me when I was a student

--the 2 blue topaz/1 amethyst ring that Richard bought for me from a juried craft show

--the tanzanite/diamond ring that Richard gave me for Christmas a few years ago

--the opal/diamond ring that I inherited from my mother-in-law

With pierced ears, I wear earrings all the time.  Favorites include the amethyst/diamond set that Richard gave me when I asked for purple earrings one year for Christmas, the diamonds from his father's watch that he had made into earrings for me, the tanzanite set he gave me with the ring described above, and the apples that DR Elmore gave me on opening night of The Apple Tree, for which I was his director's assistant.

3DDIFFUSION is a freckle on the nose of life's complexion....or lower.

One of the first times she came here she asked for some kind of information about a restaurant or other LA landmark....she received replies from many HHW readers offering help and suggestions, and she accused each and every one of them as being wrong or misleading or giving her information she already had......ass.

I still enjoy the day that I caused her to inadvertently out herself here as the ass on another board who was dissing BK about another subject....and myself as well who just happened to go check on the situation and post as well...

ASS.....hope you are reading this, dumbass, and feeling helpless and outraged at being unable to reply because your stupidity made you one of only TWO people EVER banned from HHW....

3DDIFFUSION.....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha hahahahahahaha.  HA!

I got home from 2 very long meetings with the grantwriters just in time to have a quick supper with Richard and Rob before Richard left to rehearse with the Middletown Symphony Chorus.  They're doing excerpts from Bernstein's Mass a week from Saturday.  Now I'm looking forward to NCIS and GLEE.

I think Richard and I sang wth the symphony chorus when we were in high school. Or maybe I sang in the chorus and he played the timpani?

I realize that I'm in the minority here, but I just finished watching the DVD of NINE, and I really enjoyed it...with reservations.

Granted, I've never seen 8 1/2, nor have I seen NINE on stage, so I'm just judging the film on its own merits.

I thought that the staging of the musical numbers were sensational, the performances terrific and the story certainly had me involved.

My primary problem with the film (show) is that the songs are not memorable.  Nothing that you would leave the theater humming.

I did like Marion Cotillard's first number and also Nicole Kidman's song.  I thought they were quite touching.

Anyway, take it or leave it, that's my opinion.

Back when 8 1/2 came out, I was at a point in my life where I was totally turned off on foreign language films.  LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD did that for me.

When I finally got interested in foreign films again, I just never got around to it.  It was one of those "Yes, I should see it...but not tonight" movies.  I've never seen THE SEVENTH SEAL  or RAN either, so sue me.

I know that they are great movies, but they are not my cup of tea.

At this point in my life (and even back then), I want to be entertained.  I don't want to see a film...just because I "should" see it.

I hated AVATAR.  I hated THE DARK KNIGHT.  But, most people loved those films.

That's fine.  To each his own.

Frankly, I don't understand why you watch a lot of the films you watch, but if you enjoy them...great!

JMK - Innocent question:  I know how it's legally possible, but why would they let the business go bankrupt if they have plenty of money?

And if they have plenty of money personally, is their business going bankrupt really financially woeful, or just a common-sense strategic move?

This morning afte dropping the Vixter to school I went to the gym and worked out for about 45 minutes.  Then I came home and pulled dandelions for a bit.  Then took the garbage out to the curb and then showered and went to work feeling virtuous and  sure that I was on track to losing those pesky extra pounds

Turns out it was one of my co-workers' birthday.  She turned 50 today. In celebration my boss bought lunch for us all from the gourmet deli down the road.  So instead of eating my planned lunch of 2 cups of non-fat yogurt I had grilled chicken breast with portabeloo mushroom cap and roasted red peppers witha balssamic vingera dressing served ona fresh baked poppy seed roll

Then he brought out the birthday cake - a selection of  samll chocolate  and vanilla cakes topped with various type of mousse - coffee, choclate, strawberry, rasberry, cheescake, caramel....

I suspect when I step on the scale in the AM I will not see a reduction in the poundage....

TCB -  We never actually had a run at the Village Theatre, just one of those weekend workshops where the writers get to have lunch with two most appealing locals as part of the contractual deal.  We had our lunch with HHW's very own delightful George and a local actor well known for a video of SCROOGE that I'd love to get my hands on.

And of course, from your mouth to  someone's ears

Although i suspect off-Bway is more likely for us than Broadway, but I suspect also not untilthe economy really gets better.

8 1/2 is wildly personal and wildly entertaining and was wildly influential on a whole generation of filmmakers - the point being, if you actually watched the thing you would probably love it.  You SAW Avatar, you SAW The Dark Knight - so, SEE 8 1/2 and then judge - I can't say enough about it - it's brilliant.

vixmom - Not a great day, as it turned out.  Sadly, we found out on Thursday that some friends who were supposed to help with the dogs had to go to a funeral out of town, so that kinda was that.

Not sure what the right thing to have done if we had agreed to watch someone's dogs on a day they planned since December for a 50th birthday, and then a funeral of someone close came up.  Skip and I had thought that if the shoe were on the other foot, one of us would have gone to the funeral, and the other stay with the dogs, even though it might be a drag to watch the dogs solo.  but who knows?  If it were just a regular birthday year, maybe not, but for a 50th birthday, i dunno.

As it happens, we had already downgraded the birthday plan to a day away with my brother in New Jersey, but instead, my brother came over to us on Saturday, and then we just had a small get-together with Maureen on Sunday.

It's too bad.  We'd have planned a little do here if we'd known, although that's still a regular birthday thing, not a 50th birthday thing. :(

When the first Muppet movie came out  I went to see it with several of my friends- we were all inour 20's and belonged to a group called The Coffee House which was held in the local Presbyterian church.

We were all quite delighted when the Muppets came across Dr.Teeth and his band

Further to that loan/bankruptcy thing - I've learned the hard way - if you truly see something as a loan rather than an investment or potential gift, never lend to a corporation or limited liability entity, unless you get a guarantee on the personal level.  It's been vexing to see a loan go uncollectible because the corporation was closed down, knowing full well that the former shareholder of the corporaton actually has money (that he may have taken out as salary), so essentially has your money but doesn't have to give it to you since the debt died when the corporation dissolved.

I'm just finishing up a particularly bad movie.  Then perhaps I'll watch Lost although somehow I don't think I'll be sobbing :)

I don't want to brag, but I'm appearing in Barbra Streisand's new DVD.  Granted I'm only in it for about 2 seconds, but I'm there!   You have to scroll down and hit "play."  I'm the second from the right:

Yes, I'm one of those crazy people who waited outside the Village Vanguard last September while she performed before 123 people.

did you get to see the show?

vixmom - Not a great day, as it turned out.

I am so sorry - if you had called I would have happily come into town and watched the puppies for you   (of course I may have had to sleep over due to the commotion down the block)

And...

This has been making the rounds on Twitter and Facebook, so...

Here is a version of "Rose's Turn" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFY1nx6P7AM)... From a high school.  Watch it! You will be surprised! I know I was.  *Yes, there are shades of Patti and Bernadette, but still... And the orchestra is good too!

Have any of your NY HHWers seen FENCES? I was reading about it in a magazine today and it sounded quite good...of course, I would certainly enjoy seeing Denzel Washington in the flesh on stage, but aside from that how is he play?

DR MBarnum - Fences is a wonderful play. When it was originally produced back in 1987, it won almost every major award at the time, including the Pulitzer.

I got onto the computer this evening around 7:30 intending to work on some inteviews...and all I have done is check Facebook, HHW, and assorted other websites. It is no wonder I never get anything done.

But, I simply must finish up Rex Reason and Rad Fulton!

I've been E and T while I was revising the Architectural standards I've been working on.  I'm having a great time doing this.  I'll be curious to see what they look like after a number of people review them and offer suggestions, but for now, I am happy with them.  I'm hoping that I'm asked to take it to the next level and create restoration standards.  For now I must sleep.  I have my physical and blood tests in the morning.  I want to get my rest

Again I have nothing to say.

TOD.  I just spent half an hour looking through the rock and mineral book trying to find the name of my favorite piece of jewelry.  The pendant is a piece of million year old glass that was formed when meteorite hit the earth in the middle east and turned the sand into glass from the heat.    (Too many pages to go through, will have to research it later).     Last time I wore it was to "Two's Company".  It's really special  set in gold with diamonds, the last two my husband gave me, and pearls, the first two my husband gave me.
