I'm glad to hear your good news, Danise.

My sister got a layoff notice after 30 years of employment.

DR Cillaliz - I gave up a long time ago on booking conference hotels through the organization, because the "special" rate was always a rip-off.

In our travel-planning news, I'm in contact with someone about an apartment in Brooklyn that would accommodate Richard and me and Rob and Mary Linda and is quite near the R line into Manhattan.  I'd inquired about 5 nights and he's trying to get us to take 8 with a good discount if we do.  Twist my arm!

DR Laura - sorry to hear about your sister's layoff.  Can she retire, with 30 years?

I did book my trip to Toronto in August.  I saved over $440 over the discount rate at the hotel by booking through Orbitz instead of through the group. Who knew!  I know it won't count for the block for the organization, but puhleese, for that much less, I really don't care
Some of these pre-planned trips are too expensive, I agree. I always prefer doing my own comparison shopping.

This is a conference.  They have to sign contracts about 2-3 years in advance so it's often a lot more than you can get when they realize the hotel won't be full

Yes, she is able to retire. She has been dodging the lay-off bullet for about 29 of those years.

Sorry to hear DR Laura's news.

Borders corporation eliminated at least one position nationwide this week; as a result we lost the two very fine young women who took care of the store's Paperchase section.

Second issue of San Antonio Taste magazine is now for sale. Birthing pains for the second issue were hard and long. We lost the designer in mid-production, and the new one gave the magazine a whole new look. (It's better. The images are still gorgeous, but the words now carry more weight.) But the baby is beautiful, and it's already drawing great comments and good sales.

Now, if only the website could become something other than a clone of my website.

Is it just me or do these two look vaguely similar?

Well, after all the to do about being able to refinance, I started having second thoughts and it just didn't feel right for some reason.  Looking at all the fees etc, I decided it just isn't worth it.  The new interest rate would have been nice, but my gut just doesn't feel right about it, so I'm going to pass.  I can always make extra payments every month...

So, Toronto.  I've never been there.  Any suggestions on must do sights and events?  I am looking forward to a reception on our last night there with Jon Krakauer - author of Into the Wild etc.

Just off the phone, and something I've been thinking about for the last three months is now going to happen, beginning in two months.  One night a month at the Gardenia will now be a Kritzerland night.  If we catch on, it could go to two nights a month.  My idea was to present great themed evenings with four or five singers doing the honors - starting with a Lost in Boston evening, then an Unsung Musicals evening, then maybe Peter Pan - you know, all based on the albums I've done - themed albums and songwriter albums - all of it.  I'm really excited about this.  It would either be the first Monday, Wednesday or Thursday of each month.  I've been to so many of these "cabaret" things with multiple singers and there's just never any thought to them and they're all sort of casual and thrown together - I think those who know me know I won't be doing that sort of evening.  These will be rehearsed and fun, and I may end up doing a running commentary occasionally for things like Lost in Boston - not sure about that part yet.  Each show would run around seventy-five minutes.

Sounds wonderful, BK!  I love a lot of the songs from Lost In Boston and Unsung Musicals-to hear them performed live would be great!

Dear BK, I would like it very much if you could plan a cabaret night for early-mid November.
