At least they drove us back to the terminal and let us off the shuttle bus. That's good. I was on a flight not long ago when, as the plane was taxiing to the runway, it ran over a piece of metal. The captain said they had to check the condition of the tire. After a while with the plane still stood still, he said the tire was damaged and had to be replaced so we sat in the plane for ages while they got a new one and replaced it. At least the crew served us drinks while we waited...and waited.
Flight vibes for DR JOSE....wave as you fly over Indiana.

So for this Saturday's post-FOLLIES meet-up with DR vixmom, the guest list is looking like:
DR vixmom
DR FJL
DR elmore (maybe)
DR Jason (surprise!)
and DR myself ;)
Anyone else?
Oh... I made sure to add the Simon Rattle, Glyndeborne recording of "Porgy & Bess" to my iPad playlist in iTunes. That should be good in-flight music.

Where the elite meet, obviously.
And the word of the day is: ALATE!
Does anyone else start singing the tune of "The things that you're liable / To read in the bible" and somehow the words "I'm strong to the finish / Cuz I eat me spinach" pop into your head? Not me.
no one else. Hmmmm.....

How 'bout this one: does anyone know the contemporary Christian tune (in many modern hymnals): Here I Am, Lord. I cannot hear the second four bars of the first eight without hearing "she was bringing up three very lovely girls." :)
I'm usually asleep by the time the pause after the "Here I Am, Lord" phrase. Hopelessly trite tune.Does anyone else start singing the tune of "The things that you're liable / To read in the bible" and somehow the words "I'm strong to the finish / Cuz I eat me spinach" pop into your head? Not me.

When I listen to the PASSION recording (well, I do sometimes...) and Donna Murphy asks John Shea to write the letter she's about to dictate and she starts, "Dear Friend...", I, of course, can't help but hear "I am so sorry about last night...It was a nightmare in every way..."
DR Jane - Yep, you're supposed to get some major SNOW. -DRs George, TCB, Jed and Ann too.
I was sitting in the conservatory this morning and suddenly became aware of the noise of things falling onto the roof. I looked outside and saw a squirrel (possibly the same one I always see) sitting on the roof of the house, throwing nuts onto the conservatory roof.
In the middle of the night there was probably a foot or so of snow outside on the deck. This morning, it's all more or less gone, with torrential rain and winds replacing it.

If it helps your timeline any, Petula Clark and the Cassidys were in the Broadway production of "Blood Brothers" from Aug. 16, 1993 to June 5, 1994.

I need to order this. As much as I love the Houston Grand Opera version, I hear that the Glyndeborne is incredible.
It is a rather wonderful recording. However, I do agree with some of the critics who complained(?) that some of the tempos are a tad slow or a tad "strict" in places.
However, Harolyn Blackwell's "Summertime" is truly languid - in a good way. I've mentioned this here before, but... When I was doing CARMEN JONES at the Kennedy Center, Harolyn Blackwell was our Micaela, er, I mean Cindy Lou. I asked her about the exquisitely slow tempo for "Summertime". Her response was something along the lines of: "If you've ever spent a summer in Charleston, you wouldn't be doing anything fast." :)
*I also believe the set is now midline- if not budget-priced now.

Time for a nap.
Back from an interesting meeting with the volunteer administrators. I stopped at one of the branch libraries to see Gwen's Storybook Dollhouse and then I had lunch at Chipotle.I like my salad bowl at Chipotle. With carnitas. And the hot salsa.

Hmmm...I wonder if I just overpaid for it at ArkivMusic. But I did order it on disc. And ordering from Arkiv finally gave me the excuse to order THE SAINT OF BLEECKER STREET which I had been putting off for ages...
I got up at 5:30 this morning just so I could get to the office by 8:00 to make a meeting at that time that was set up to accomodate people in India who decided at the last minute that they would rather meet with us tomorrow at the same time.
Grrrrr....

DR TCB re: the snowfall. I don't actually know how much snow fell.
But for future reference i think 1 inch is 2.5 cms. So i think that makes 15 cms = 6 inches.
It is always the same story, every single year, with Portland Public Schools. They under-react the first day of a storm, as they did yesterday, when they really should have just cancelled school. Then the second day, they of course over-react. So today we have two hour delay despite the fact that almost all of the snow is off of the streets (there's still some in yards, at least at this elevation--my hunch is there's not one whit of snow further down).
You would think we had an earthquake in the Seattle-Tacoma area, rather than a snow storm. Some of the local stations have gone to total news for coverage of BLIZZARD 2012!
This intersection (http://www.kgw.com/video/featured-videos/Slips-slides-crunches-at-SW-Hamiton--Dosch-137489883.html) is right by our old house, which is now our rental.

My favorite version is still the Leontyne Price / William Warfield version of PORGY AND BESS. I grew up listening to that recording.
I wonder how many folks here remember a time (60s-70s) when you couldn't watch a beauty pageant/talent contest/audition without someone singing "Summertime".
Because it's at such a "languid pace", some of the versions I heard were nearly torturous.
Oh, dear, DR TCB, now what?
I truly believed that nothing else negative could possibly happen in my life; but last night I received news that almost caused me to throw myself out of the nearest window.

We are watching a DVD of Nero Wolfe episodes and the murder they're working on now took place a block east of DR Elmore's home!
Lord what a day.
When I finally looked at where I'd left off I'd lost the paragraph or two of new stuff
We are watching a DVD of Nero Wolfe episodes and the murder they're working on now took place a block east of DR Elmore's home!
I did it.
Wowie zowie! Everything is falling nicely into place today. I got a copy of the FANFARE Magazine review of the Herbert Piano and Cello music, which will be out in March, and it's a rave.
Hugs DR TCB. I am very glad you did not jump out of a window!!!!!

It seems our recent phone/internet problems were due to cable thieves & not to CenturyLink. We wondered about the possibility as it was in the exact area that was repaired during the last outage.

I vote for blaming them anyway.
Ooh, CenturyLink! Not fond of them. I called to cancel our landline a month ago and noticed yesterday that we were still getting billed. When I called to complain, the lady said "Huh, well I see the notice to discontinue service, but for some reason nobody did it. Sorry about that." Thankfully they will refund us the last charges. Still, I don't like them.
