So here's a question about professionals learing lines. Is there a contractually obligated time limit or a fine if lines aren't learned on time? I know rehearsals are always limited and actors have to learn their lines, but what happens if professional actors don't?
I CAN STILL POST TODAY BUT TOMORROWS NOTES ARE ALREADY UP AND RUNNING!
I find it just a wee bit disheartening that yesterday we had less posts than the weekend. It's Christmas, you know, so let's get some serious postin' goin' on, shall we?
Rodzinski and I aren't going to work. His bosses seem pretty understanding and he is salaried so I think he should be okay- as long as the strike ends soon and he is able to get to work to finish everything up so that we can leave on Friday night.
Today is a GMHC day for me and they are super understanding and know that I cannot get 160 blocks (approx 8-9 miles) to work during the strike. The problem is that I am an hourly employee and so I will not earn any money for the shifts I cannot do. And that is my only source of income right now...
I think that the transit workers union has gone too far, and even though I seriously question the MTA's business practices, it's hard for me to support the workers. I think they are being very unrealistic with their demands. As you guys know, I'm training to become a social worker, and when I graduate in May with my masters degree, I will make nowhere near what the transit workers make. And I will have to pay for a portion of my health coverage, and I will have no hope of retiring at age 55 without a winning lottery ticket. And that's okay because it's what I chose.
But, tomorrow, I won't be able to get to work at my internship, and I won't be able to tell my children why I'm not there. Each day that passes where I cannot get to work, I will have less sympathy for the workers. I'm all for the process of negotiations and striking, but not when the demands have gotten out of control. I don't want to diminish the job that they do and everyone deserves a fair shake, but these are not 12 year old children losing limbs in a meat factory.

The offer called for a 9 percent wage increase, phased in over three years. The union wants 8 percent raises each year of the contract. Currently, train operators, station agents and cleaners earn an annual base salary of between $47,000 and $55,000.
I could always tell when my cousin and her husband had been smoking the MaryJane. When I got to their house, they would be making a lot of popcorn. Lita was holding the pan, and Brad was shaking the stove. :)
Former Mouseketeer who became a minister?
Well we know it isn't jailbird Darlene Gillespie or roustabout Lonnie Burr.
Hmmmm.....Dennis or Jay?
First up will be Doris Day's Christmas Album which I have had out but have not put on, but I will today. It is perhaps the mellowest of all Christmas albums that I possess.
Re: The NYC transit strike:
What a great opportunity for a Segway franchise...to set up rental stands around the city!!!

And I adore Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" played instrumentally by the Boston Pops. When words were added, they're fun, but the instrumental version, which is simply winter-themed, is a great favorite.
This is the song I would always play when I'd get in from the last day of school before Christmas holidays started.
Oh! Favorite Christmas song:Marry,MaryMerry Christmas, Darling -- The Carpenters
Off to make meringues... pray for stiff peeks :)
The union said the latest MTA offer included annual raises of 3 percent, 4 percent and 3.5 percent; the previous proposal included 3 percent raises each year. MTA workers typically earn from $35,000 as a starting salary to about $55,000 annually.
Toussaint said the union wanted a better offer from the MTA, especially when the agency has a $1 billion surplus this year.
"With a $1 billion surplus, this contract between the MTA and the Transport Workers Union should have been a no-brainer," Toussaint said. "Sadly, that has not been the case."
A key issue was the MTA's proposal to raise the age at which new employees become eligible for a full pension from 55 to 62, which the union says is unfair. The MTA later agreed to allow pension eligibility at 55 for new employees, but asked that they contribute 6 percent of their salaries for their first 10 years of employment.
Can one beat eggs white to death?? These are NOT peeking at ALL! haB!!Pray it dies or you'll be in litigation forever.

vixmom, I'm with you. These people, both sides, are just reprehensible. And the fact that there is a LAW prohibiting these people from doing what they're doing and that they are breaking that law is just pathetic. What will the consequences of this lawbreaking be? A ten dollar fine? They put people in jail for breaking laws much less inconsequential than this - this particular lawbreaking is causing loss of income and/or grief to millions of people.
Pray it dies or you'll be in litigation forever.
Meringue
3 egg whites, at room temperature
6 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Beat the egg whites at high speed with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. With mixer running, add the cream of tartar, then gradually add the sugar, a tablespoon at a time, and beat until stiff peaks form. Beat in the vanilla.
THANKS!! I was using Martha Stewart's recipe for Swiss Meringue, I had to cook it first. If I get brave, I'll try yours. It's actually a recipe for Chocolate Meringue cookies.
Vixmom, I forgot PENNY SERENADE! I love that movie.
Where the hell does someone get "sanding" sugar??
By the way it looks in the picture, it's rather large granuals of sugar. Coarse Sanding Sugar, it says... leave it to Martha to think we all know what some of these ingredients are!
Ok, what's up with the whole "actors playing instruments" thing? http://www.playbill.com/news/article/96927.html
Does anyone else find this silly?
What the hell is "sanding" sugar??

Later re-released on the Columbia's budget Harmony label - Doris sings 'em! ;D
DR Jane, when the Cost Plus Import store opens here in a few months the first thing I am gonna do is go there and buy some Marzipan! They carry a wonderful selection of the stuff!
And the roads here are fine now.
Can one beat eggs white to death?? These are NOT peeking at ALL! haB!!
Sometimes it is because there was a little bit of water or something on your beater ...
Did you add a 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar?
Just wrapped production meeting, and now am on my way to LACC meeting/lunch, after which I shall return.
From MBarnum:Is there one in Portland and who makes their marzipan?
DR JANE - I think Doris has a Christmas CD around....there are several on EBAY...and she would sound great coming out of that BIG jukebox! Doris' arrangers were always top notch!!
Good house vibes.....we must have photos as soon as possible, DR CILLALIZ.
Is it the house you were talking about the other day?
I just introduced our electrician to Jo Stafford. He is now a fan. I wish Amazon had sent her Christmas CD-guess I will have to wait until next year.
My favorite Christmas CD is Nat King Cole. I would like Perry Como & Bing Crosby Christmas CD’s. I’m sure they must exist.
So, instead of the chocolate meringue cookies, I have two other thoughts... Chocolate-Black Pepper Cookies, or Chocolate Orange EspressonThins. These are all out of Martha's Holiday Cookie magazine
Now, as for "A Christmas Story", I watch it at least once if not twice each year. -Sometimes, not even during the Christmas season.
:)
So...
And I'm not sure I've ever admitted this here on HHW... But...
I have to say, I've never gotten into "It's Wonderful Life". Yes, there are some wonderful moments in the movie for me, but, all in all, I find it a hard movie to sit through. It gets kind of boring for me.
:-\
Any other DR willing to fess up to this opinion too?
;)

One of the cable stations does a 24 hour Christmas Story Marathon starting Christmas Eve. Vixdad and I usually have this on while we are waiting for Santa to complete his tasks after the Vixter goes to bed
"You'll shoot your eye out!"
It IS nerve-wracking buying a house, and the paperwork is monstrous. A friend who just bought a condo (the third residence he's bought in his life) told me the paperwork has increased with each place he's bought.
So... If the transit workers get back to work, just how will the fines for going on strike be collected? Enforced?
*And I'm just wondering why Mayor Bloomberg just hasn't reached into his pocket and grabbed some loose change to pay the striking workers what they want.
;D

I'm also fond of "The Ref," which is like a pleasant version of my Ohio family holiday gatherings.
WHITE CHRISTMAS is another favorite. I have yet to see HOLIDAY INN.
I know a lot of actors who cling to the book, saying "I'm learning the lines organically." Whatever the Hell that means. I figure once I've learned them, I have the flexibility to explore the many varied possibilities of saying them.
I always thought it meant "I'm getting the feel of the scene so I can paraphrase and never worry about the author's actual lines or rhythms within the dialogue." These actors never do classical plays, I suspect.
Ain't it the truth, DR ELMORE. Why do some people think they don't have to say the lines as written? WHY? WHY?
Of course they say what they want, but if you try to say something that's not in the script to cover their asses, they look at you like you're crazy. :P
DR Cillaliz - Good House Hunting Vibes!
*I truly admire anyone who can undertake such a process: buying a house. I've been a renter all my life, and the whole concept of "buying a house" is just something that my brain cannot wrap itself around. Points - ?? Mortgage - ?? Loans - ?? Just does not compute right now for me. When it comes time for me to buy a house, I just envision paying for the whole thing all at once. "Here's my offer. Here's my check." -Yes, I'm being that optimistic!
;)
In graduate school I acted in a terrible children's play with an actor who never learned lines, so I would wait until he finished fumbling around before I'd speak. In one performance he actually said the correct line and I was so dumbfounded I screwed up mine. All I could do was look at him and say "Right!"

I have a ride to work tomorrow! Well to my internship so that I can work with the kids. Still no good way to get to GMHC, so no income for me this week. :(
TOD: I love Carol of the Bells, it's a little eerie and appeals to my darkside. I also like Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep sung by Rosemary Clooney, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas sung by Judy Garland.
Hello, everyone!
I love Holiday Inn. Oh, boy!
I'm sitting in the Extended Stay America in Bellevue WA, having just gotten in to SEATAC, rented a car, driven up to the cabin to check on things, get a few items, water the plants, and get back here before dark, which happens before 4:30.
Now I find I have free wireless internet!!! Oh, the holiday spirit!
Christmas songs:
Suzy Snowflake (one of the dumbest things ever)
There's a rather well known acting "couple" who have worked on two major projects over the past couple of years. One of them is very fastidious when it comes to learning lines and blocking. The other one does learn the lines and blocking (more or less), but also likes to leave a room - a lot of room - for things just to happen in rehearsal. And in performances - at least in previews. Needless to say...
*And when "one" of them happens to come into Angus McIndoe for a few drinks and then starts "talking" about the "other one's" process... Well... Just be thankful that Liz Smith was not in earshot.
;D
<Gasp!> Nathan and Matthew????
And now Tomovoz is here, too!Briefly. More electrical storms and we have lost power a few time today.
