THERE'S JUST NO PLEASING SOME PEOPLE!

Porn Maker in Historic Building Draws Protest
By JESSE McKINLEY
The New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 11) — It is hard to imagine a city prouder of its sexuality than San Francisco, a place with an active strip club district, a union for erotic dancers and an annual parade on Folsom Street where those not wearing leather and chaps are the odd ones out.

So it came as something of a surprise when a kerfuffle arose because of the newest addition to the city’s sexual landscape: the State Armory and Arsenal building, a 200,000-square-foot landmark in the Mission District that was just purchased by Kink.com, an online pornography company devoted to bondage and sadomasochism.

But somewhere between his purchase and the first paddling, Mr. Acworth has run into strong opposition from a group of neighborhood activists who long feared that the armory, vacant since 1975, would be converted into something truly taboo: condominiums.

Some of the previous efforts to use the armory were derailed by anti-gentrification forces who wanted more affordable housing in the Mission, an economically and racially mixed area where hipsters and the homeless are represented in equal numbers.

But this time around, opponents insist they are not being prudish, just prudent, considering the building’s proximity to schools and families.

“Everybody thought it was going to be housing, and then mid-January, we get this bomb,” said Anita Correa, who runs an arts theater in the neighborhood. “Everybody was taken by shock.”

Mr. Acworth said he was looking to expand his fast-growing business and fell in love with the castle-like armory the moment he laid eyes on its lower levels.

“The basement had a series of rooms that looked like dungeons,” said Mr. Acworth, who bought the building from a private developer for $14.5 million. “It just has such character.”

The Kink.com plan is the latest chapter in the long and somewhat tortured history of the armory, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Built between 1912 and 1914, the brick-and-mortar building has long been a redevelopment challenge for San Francisco, with its landmark status and the city’s famously vociferous activist set derailing plan after plan over the last three decades.

Among the possible occupants have been a nonprofit rehabilitation clinic; a mainstream film studio and sound stage; and a gym that would have taken advantage of the building’s 70-foot ceilings to install a rock-climbing wall. In 2000, a plan for a dot-com office was derailed, as was a subsequent idea to use the armory’s enclosed drill yard — itself the size of a football field — to house computer servers.

The most recent plan before Kink.com’s purchase was for a mixed-use residential and office project that would have built luxury apartments and some lower-income housing atop and alongside the existing building.

Tim Frye, a historic preservation specialist for the San Francisco Planning Department, said the architecture of the armory — small, narrow windows; no elevator; poor insulation — meant that any major conversion would most likely have been complicated by the building’s landmark status.

“It’s not a friendly building,” Mr. Frye said. “It’s really imposing, and a lot of the preservation board thinks that housing wasn’t a really good use.”

... in Bali the same themes and characters are used over and over in their shadow puppet plays. They don't look for newness; they revel in old favorites.

Think "Punch and Judy" - which is now out of favor for being very politically incorrect.

I have found just the opposite to be true with Deep Discount vs. Amazon. For most of the mainstream things I buy, Amazon is usually cheapest by a dollar or two. (I'm not counting shipping prices since I never buy from Amazon unless I get free shipping.)

In all fairnesss, "the site that shall not be named" is really a Harry Potter riff.

Which was itself a riff on "She who must be obeyed" from RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY.

EXTRAS was an absolutely hilarious episode with Andy seeking some respect in his craft and seeking a play to get involved with. Delighted to learn he would be directed by Sir Ian McKellan, he found out in time that it was a three man gay play and he was going to be playing a gay man.

McKellan's explanation to Andy of what "acting" is was beyond priceless.

der Brucer - I think you know that the site I'm referencing didn't get the expression from Harry Potter - given the number of other "borrowings" from this here site.  I think you know that.

Last night's CROSSING JORDAN had two cases but only one was of real interest - a boxer who won a grudge fight was killed after the bout. The next day, his manager/trainer was also killed. A neat little mystery that took some time to sort out.

The other case involved a mother's skeleton being found in the bay, and her surviving son not wanting to have anything to do with her remains. The story could have been poignant, but it was sabotaged by the personal life shambles that Lily, Bug, and others were trying to sort through for themselves.

Josh Duhamel and Molly Sims from LAS VEGAS guest starred.

Got several little packages today so maybe the mail problem has been fixed.  One was from edisaurus - act one of the Brain on DVD - that will be tonight's viewing pleasure.  She also sent me two boxes of Japanese jellied rice candies with the equivalent of what was then an "amusing toy".  What fun!  Of course, only those who've read the story Maddie in How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories will know what I'm talking about.

Preservation does pose some challenges. But it is so worth it!

And sometimes not!

MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!

The once prestigious beach-front private club "The Pacific Coast Club, Long Beach, CA:

The preservationists were vowed and determined to save it at all costs. The developer who owned the property went to endless meetings and agreed to all sorts of demands, including keeping virtually all the exterior and architecturally significant interior public spaces intact - all he asked was permission to do a small add-on to provide better beach access. The preservationists said no deal - it's all or nothing!

The developer was patient, the clock ran out, and the building was totally demolished and replaced by a large ugly condo tower!

Actually, no.

Since I really don't know which site is "not to be named", I am unfamiliar with their previous iniquities, hence can not evaluate a pattern of misconduct.

Right on the mark! I suspect the writers wrongly thought the two stories would complement each other - but for that to work, both plot lines needed to pull at the same emotional threads in similar directions - instead we were bounced about. As you might say - very dissatisfying.

The DP and I are seriously looking to move east (Pennsylvania) in the next 8 months or so.  The process seems to be slipping into high gear these days and we have both agreed to step up on the money saving thing.  In this process, I've discovered something really cool, it's called "shopping from your shelves"!!

What is that, you may ask:  It's called instead of buying new music, start listening to the 1000's of CD's you already own starting with purchases that went from the store to the shelf without even taking the shrink wrap off.  It's amazing!!!!   :)

Quite a few years ago (more than 12, I'd say), I used to listen to cassettes, here at work.  When I'd buy a record (they were still available) or CD, I'd make a tape of it so that I could listen to it at work.  I FINALLY decided to buy a portable CD player and get rid of all the cassettes of CDs that I had made (I didn't want to get rid of the LP cassettes, yet).  So, I put all of my CDs back in alphabetical order (they were all over the place) and I listened to every single one in order.  At that time, it took me over eight months to get through all of my CDs!  That was the only time that I've done that.  But it was fun...except when I had like five or six different versions of the same show and I was going to make myself listen to them in order.  After the second show of multiple versions, I spaced them out with a new show in between each different version of the same show.
