Title: VALENTINE'S DAY
Post by: bk on February 14, 2007, 12:30:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with French kissing and Spanish hickey-giving, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently French kissing and making beautiful MOOsic.

Valentine's Day greetings!  My workplace is closed today until 1pm, the appointed end time for the brownbag lunch.  I've spent the last 45 minutes emailing the speaker and registrants to cancel the program.  My other meeting for this afternoon has also been cancelled, so it looks like I'll have another day at home.

I wonder if women are enjoying the harriet/matt storyline more than some of the male DRs here.  Because I am quite mesmerized by it. I really liked this week's show. I think these two have huge chemistry. And I was really interested to learn their backstory. I think re: harriet/luke and matt's hatred of him it sure explained a lot.

And re: last night's AMERICAN IDOL.

*

By the end I was completely frustrated.  We've never even seen more than 50% of the final 40. I just hate that.  To me between all the auditions and the hollywood show we should see EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE TOP 40.  At least we will get to see a lot of them tonight. But still. I think it totally sucks.

And while they did follow up on a few audition stories was anybody else slightly confused and frustrated by the last scene with the indian brother and sister. They didn't even show one second of them last night. So how are we going to know if the sister deserved to go home or not???

And then we had to sit through some really horrid performances (that girl who was so obnoxious with the big curly hair - she was the only one in her group to leave after groups). I hated her!

And some of the ones that were so good in the audition rounds (like that girl from NY who lied to her father about auditioning). They cut her without ever showing her in hollywood.

I really don't think they should cut people after one song. They should rate them and then let them sing again. But it would be nice if they showed us all our favorites from the audition shows.

And then they cut so many of the favorites. I loved that country girl baylie brown. Yes she forgot her lyrics. But i totally believe she would have been top 10.

And that bearded guy who was so good at auditions. They never even showed him sing last night.

Then there were many people who were good at auditions who seemingly got through last night (the indian brother, the guy who had a baby). Yet they did not even show them singing one note last night.

I'm really disappointed with them showing weeks and weeks of the crappy auditions and then we get one show for hollywood????

Oh and i totally agree with DR MattH. It is totally unfair that some people have never been seen before. America already has their favorites. And if a contestant has not been shown they will have  a much harder time.

Good morning, all!  If I had a Valentine's card to give, it would go to  every dear reader on this site.  That's how much I love you all!

On the Kubler-Ross front, my dad cntinues his decline; Jo Ann was up most of the night with him, and this morning, shortly before I awoke, she and Randy had to strip, clean him, and bathe him from several nocturnal accidents.  Occasionally in life we come upon saints but I never expectedto find any in my family!

Jo has the feeling that today he will die, and this morning I held his hand, told him I loved him, that I would take care of his estate as he wished it, not let the Macbeths pull any crap, and that he had my permission to die.  I don't know if he heard me, but I feel better for telling him that.

Last night, Randy, Jo, and I watched AMERICAN IDOL, which I hadn't seen since Season One.  I still think it's a crock of nonsense. Then we watched HOUSE becasue it's vecome Jo's favorite tv program.  Josh Stamberg, whom DR MBarnum and I saw on the street in the Village, was the guest star on a date with Lisa Edelstein.

I have no questions for BK today now that I know the reason for the Valentine's Day inquiry yesterday, but who's heard THE BRAIN CD?  I want one!

Larry, you did the right thing. As odd as it may sound to some people, letting the dying know that it's OK to leave sometimes eases the journey for all involved.

oh, and one more thing about American Idol
SPOILER ALERT (although how can you spoil American Idol, it's so rotten...the show you hate to love, what can I say...)

***

Why even waste the air time on that chick who sang that terrible song (terribly -- once again, Simon was spot on) that she said her mother made her sing?  Hey, it's all about choices, she made a bad one.  Then to let her  -- AND her mom -- come in there to try to let her sing another song.  I ask: Where was security?!  (and then they, and Paula, act like Simon was being rude and unfair.,,give me a break)..

And what's with letting all those folks through that couldn't remember their lyrics?  Thought that was an automatic ticket home... That show is totally rigged and unfair -- but hey, that's life, so that is true reality TV.....

Time to step down off my soapbox -- and stop wasting any more precious time on American Idol....I'm such a sheep -- baaaaa! ::)

I have a feeling I won't be seeing VERONICA MARS later. The ACC basketball game which preempted it went into overtime last night, so I suspect the scheduled times on the DVR got thrown off.

Thankfully, the CW station here rebroadcasts VERONICA on Saturday night, so I should get to see it then. If I didn't get it, I'll go ahead and set it to pick up the show on Saturday in case I forget to watch it "live."

I will have the two LAW & ORDER shows from last night to watch, and I'm looking forard to them. There is also BOSTON LEGAL.

BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if Mark Valley gets written off the show by the end of the season. I read that he'll be starring in a comedy pilot for another network, and if the show gets picked up, he'll be off BOSTON LEGAL. Of course, I have never felt that they got the most out of him anyway. After seeing him on the brilliant and underrated KEEN EDDIE, he's fully capable of carrying a show on his own.

I had the funniest morning.  I had to take my car to the dealership for some recall work and service. One of the big "services" is they have someone drive you back to work and pick you up when your car is ready.

So I got there, it's below zero out and they tell me that I'll have to wait until the driver gets back from wherever he is.  So I have a cup of coffee chat on the phone, wondering aloud if there really is a driver and whether I should just take the day off and go out for breakfast at the truckstop nearby...then an older  gentleman (I found out later he has been retired for a long time) came up and said he was warming up the car for me.  Ok, that's cool

We go outside and there is one of those Scions that looks like a box with wheels.  He says "I've never driven one of these, ma'am, hold on tight" We get in and he's fumbling around. I noticed the gas gauge was on "E".
so I pointed that out and he explained to me how bad it is to leave no gas in a car when it's this cold out, I laughed and said..."well I never do" he smiled as if it just occurred to him that the empty tank wasn't my fault, went back in to get money for gas and we headed off to the gas station.

We get to the gas station and he realizes that he's forgotten his gloves. Finally he gets the car filled with gas and we head out.  His first comment is "You know if we had an accident with that semi over there it would all be over for us"  I cracked up. The car was finally getting warm so we decided that it refused to get warm until someone fed it.

The rest of the ride was one quip after another.  We laughed and laughed.   I was an hour late for work, but it was a wonderful way to start the day.

It happens all the time.  And, actually, since they had made it to Hollywood week, this was their second time singing.  And just like in a theatrical callback, the contestants had time to prepare for Hollywood week. Heck, they had weeks to prepare for their initial solo round.  If they weren't prepared, they weren't prepared.  Showbiz is just showbiz.

Now the editing of the show is a totally different matter... :-\

A little more AI talk ahead...

And as much as the producers edit down the preliminary rounds, I actually think seeing all of the auditions in their entirety would actually be quite "painful" and boring.  -Even with all the good auditions thrown in.  Even if "we" had had the opportunity to see all the Top 40 contestants sing their songs in their entirety, that would just make for one long, and inevitably confusing evening of TV.  There would just be too many people and songs to remember, to keep track of.  And the producers would also run the risk of having some less stellar auditions finishing out the evening - if they showed everyone in the order they originally sang.

And when it comes down to it, it's all about getting people to watch the show.  The ratings.  And people are definitely watching.  Even moreso this season.

I have a few friends who don't start watching the show until the live rounds start since that is truly when the competition starts.  Yes, it's fun to see the prelims, but that's what they are, prelims.

Jo has the feeling that today he will die, and this morning I held his hand, told him I loved him, that I would take care of his estate as he wished it, not let the Macbeths pull any crap, and that he had my permission to die.  I don't know if he heard me, but I feel better for telling him that.

DR ELMORE,
I think you are doing the right things.

A few days before my dad passed away he told me that he was hanging on for my benefit. I had agonized over losing him, but at this point his life was just misery. I told him it was all right, to go whenever he was ready, thanked him for all he'd done for me, and told him that I loved him. He nodded, and I knew he was relieved.  That turned out to be our last conversation.

I send you STRENGTH and LOVE and PATIENCE. I note, too, that you have not lost your sense of humor, and that alone can help you through.

We have a couple inches of snow and ice today. Since it doesn't look like the sun will come out and help melt it, I piled on the winter clothes and shoveled my front steps and sidewalk. Thanks for providing his name! I LOVE him! He's also playing Harriet Hayes' love interest on STUDIO 60.

Josh was the gay cop who ended up in a threesome in the SIX FEET UNDER episode involving the paint ball battle.  When DR MBarnum was my fire escape guest, we went to a play in which Brian D'Arcy James acted.  When we left the theatre, Josh was standing outside talking to friends.  He may have been at the performance as well.

My nephew Matt and I went shopping, he for a Valentine gift and I for a suit.  My depressed and depressing hometown is a mess!  I looked at a suit but didn't purchase, no matter how much pressure I got from my sales lady.  Perhaps tomorrow I'll decide something.

If we're talking based ONLY on a movie (in other words, not a movie made from other source material such as a play or book, i.e. Auntie Mame or The Matchmaker), then I'd say Promises, Promises and Carnival.

Besides the two you mention, West Side Story and The Sound Of Music.

The Man Who Knew Too Much, for very Kritzer reasons.

I can't help, but the IMDB lists his birthdate as March 6, 1949, and gives this bio info:

"Richard grew up in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles (Boyz n the Hood (1991)), was a semi-professional boxer, food and wine critic and successful stage director. He is also a noted Afro-Latin percussionist and the founder of the original Mystic Knights of the Oingo-Boingo. Richard's first novel, "The Schlemazl of Sebriem" will be published later this year."

Contact details are available through IMDb for anyone who is an IMDbPro member.

And the word of the day is: EPULOSITY!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde,
But don't think it was easy -
Pre-dancing, they had celebrated St. Valentine's
With an EPULOSITY of chocolate covered strawberries,
Cream puffs, bananas Foster (marvelously phallic),
And handfulls of those little candy hearts that have love notes printed on them,
The result being that they both were more than a little stuffed and gassy,
And if they danced too quickly, they were apt to emit butt burps.

In unison, no less!

Great choices, MR BK.

After watching Miss Day last night, I was looking through some of the $1 DVD's that I have purchased.

I decided to watch 1972's THE GATLING GUN.  The cast included Mr Guy Stockwell (brother of Dean) a very handsome man, and Mr Robert Fuller in a rare role as a villain.  I then started noticing some Allison Hayes connections...

John Carradine - starred with Allison in THE UNEARTHLY
Tommy Cook - featured with Allison in MOHAWK

Photographed by Mr Jacques Marquette, Associate Producer & Director of Photography of ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT WOMAN

Associate Producer & Screenwriter - Mark Hanna, writer of AOTFFW and THE UNDEAD, actor in CHICAGO SYNDICATE, and a man that Allison dated.

Robert Gordon, director.  Another date of Allison's, frequently seen together at the Sportman's Lodge and El Rancho Vegas.  In fact Allison wanted to marry Bobby Gordon, but the fact that he was 2 inches shorter than she was, made him hesitate.  Of course he was also already married.

He does have a website www.richardelfman.com but it didn't seem to have anything but a home page with no info.

You might try e-mailing info@richardelfman.com

Or you might try Screen Actors Guild as he acted under the name Aristide Sumatra .

Maybe you can locate one of his kids.

Or: I did find this address for a Richard Elfman

3265 Santa Fe Ave
Long Beach, CA 90810

All the other Richard Elfman's in California had birthdates listed that were nowhere near 1949. This listing had no DOB. Could be him. No phone number listed, however.

Back from a very nice breakfast meeting with Miss Alet Taylor.  She looks great, is having fun in the Vegas Producers, and we discussed how to proceed with her show - I think our plan will be to premiere it somewhere in August.

BK, thanks for your detailed notes. Yes---some of those things I won't be able to do due to lack of coverage (by even the DV!) but I will endeavor to get as many as possible.

As I mentioned, I won't be able to work on it until after Sunday, because of our fundraiser.

Thanks for being so precise in your comments!

One nice thing happened was that the ACC basketball overtime game had no effect on my DVR's ability to record a delayed broadcast of VERONICA MARS. And it was a delightful episode, too, even if it DID introduce another murder case in the mix on top oif the one Keith and Veronica are in the midst of investigating.

The child actress who spent a couple of days with Logan was featured in a very memorable CSI episode last season in which, despite her age, she got the best of the entire team. She's a very convincing actress.

I have REALLY missed not seeing Pez the last couple of episodes. He's clearly my favorite of the characters introduced this season.

And I was delighted to find out about Veronica's FBI intern application. That was a nice surprise, and Dean O'Dell's recommendation (if he, in fact actually wrote it) brought tears to my eyes.

Next I watched LAW & ORDER: CI. It was a disturbing episode about the murder of a hip-hop singer and the way "the hood" closed ranks on the cops who were merely trying to investigate the crime. I suspect the situation is all-too-true, but what a sad state of affairs this is!

BOSTON LEGAL found Clarence on his first case, and it happened to be a murder trial for which he felt himself extremely inadequate but managed to pull himself together (with the help of his wig) to do what needed to be done.

And here I was talking about Mark Valley leaving the series, and the producers pull a BIG surprise on me. However, I suspect all was not what it seemed last night.

I decided to save last night's SVU for this evening before prime time, so I watched an episode of LAW & ORDER: CI from the second season set I'm going through.

ELizabeth Wilson, Peter Frechette, and Frank Wood guest starred in a story involving some Chinese artifacts coveted by Ms. Wilson. D'Onofrio had some very funny physical comedy bumping into priceless antiques in a shop trying to get the owner to spill what she knew.

When I wrote about STUDIO 60 last night, I had a feeling something like this was in the wind.

This from today's VARIETY:

"NBC is pushing up the premiere date for "The Black Donnellys" -- and pulling "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" off the air a week earlier than planned.
"Donnellys," which was set to bow March 5, will now sign on Monday, Feb. 26, at 10 p.m. Move gives "Donnellys" an extra week on the air with a firstrun "Heroes" lead-in.'

The article went on to say that there was no date set for the return of STUDIO 60, and that if it did return, it probably wouldn't be in the same timeslot.

I've been looking over der Brucer's televiewing schedule for tonight.

Eight o'clock - he's watching Bones and DVRing Return to Jericho.

I'm not really interested in either of them.

Nine o'clock - he's watching Criminal Minds and DVRing American Yodel.

I'm not interested in the former, and the latter makes me want to puke.

Ten o'clock - he's watching CSI:NY, DVRing Lost, and recording on his VCR (in his bedroom) Medium.

I don't care about CSI in any form, or about Medium.  I still haven't been able to watch the last two episodes of Lost, because der Brucer has every night's schedule loaded with recording/watching all sorts of stuff I don't care about.

What I WANT to watch is tonight's new episode of Good Eats.  Can I watch it in the living room?  No.  Der B has the living room booked.  Can I watch it in his room?  No, that's booked, too.

I'm stuck with watching it in the kitchen, I guess.

So much for Valentine's Day.

I'm pretty sure I'd read that Craig Bierko was actually going to be in a new show.  But I also loved Mark Valley in "Keen Eddie."

I'm pretty sure it's  "ragu" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragu), same as if made with hamburger.

You might also consider it a "bolognese" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolognese_sauce) sauce, although it's difficult to say where ragu ends and bolognese begins.

In my culinary experience, ragu is more akin to what we Americans eat...with a hearty base of tomatoes and tomato sauce and paste...but also with a fair amount of meat.

Bolognese is more minimalist in its use of tomato sauce and paste, but is meaty.

I've had "tortellini bolognese" and other bolognese concoctions and they've all pretty much tasted like one of my spagehetti sauce recipes that I have long loved.

I probably use more tomato sauce than a true bolognese calls for, but I am very generous with the meat quantiy, too.

Yes, I felt safe with him...although I did have to tell him he could watch the road and drive and I'd figure out how to work the defroster. (He couldn't see the dials very well)

The car ended up being ready in about 2 hours. The other lawyer in the office had to go to that part of town so he dropped me off to pick it up. The driver was there and he said "Wait, didn't I just drop you off somewhere?"   I told him it was the funniest morning I've had in a long time and he just started laughing and said "Have a good one, dear"

I was right about Valley's pilot. He's the article in part from Zap2It.com:

""Boston Legal" star Mark Valley is headed to NBC, signing on as one of two leads for the comedy "Business Class."

Valley, who plays Brad Chase on "Boston Legal," will play an amoral salesman in "Business Class," a comedy from "Simpsons" veterans Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein. The show centers on Valley's character and a rival salesman who live their lives on the road."

But I did have a good time, and it was a very relaxed audition.  And I got to start off with the "piano playing" portion this time, and that helped me a lot to relax.  *And I got brownie points for sight-reading the new arrangements.

The singing... Well.. The Beadle's songs were lowered, so now they sit too low for me.  But I sang.

As for the snow and sleet and everything else...

It was quite cold when I left my audition.  But after running my errands, it actually felt a little warmer.  And the wind had died down too.

The sidewalks were very "interesting".  Since there was still stuff falling from the skies, "they" were not required to clear off the sidewalks yet.  So, walking around midtown required some big steps and good balance.  I saw more than one person slip on the slush.  Of course, the cars were driving as if there nothing on the roads - lots of spinning wheels.

I don't have an iPod, but I do have a couple of MP3 players that are watches!  One is 128 MB and can hold a little more than two hours of music, the other has 1 GB and I've actually put about 15 hours worth of music on it.  The headphone jack is smaller than the regular headphone jack size but they both came with an adaptor.  They also connect to my computer through USB cables (both cables work with either watch).  The only problem is that they only play songs in the order in which they were added to the player.  If I want to listen to a cast recording in order, I have to put the songs on one at a time and in the correct order. :P That's the only drawback.  Otherwise, they're both pretty cool! :D

Thanks Ron.    I think he transferred from the Crenshaw district over to our school.  We aren't IMDB members & I don't really want to become a member.  I will keep searching.  I thought of a couple of other places to search.

Sort of funny-scary story time...

My roommate, Jim, had a call from his brother earlier.  His brother was telling him that he had been dealing some sort of infection on his toe nails.  So, he went to the doctor today to have it checked out, and as soon as his brother took his socks off, his doctor said, "You have frostbite."  What?!?

Jim's brother lives in Cleveland, where it's been cold and snowy the past couple of days.  And he's just been walking around in sneakers.  Additionally, his brother has been looking at new houses lately, and whenever he goes into a new house, he's been taking off his shoes... And there's been no heat in the new houses.  So...

Well, it was a good thing he went to his doctor when he did.  If he had waited another few days, his doctor said there was a chance they would have to amputate a couple of his toes.  YIKES!

...Well, it was/is a sort of funny story.  Isn't it?

Well, speaking of Sondheim...it looks like there's a possibility of TWO Sondheim revivals on Broadway (according to Playbill.com)!

London's Sunday in the Park With George Likely to Play Studio 54 (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/105736.html)

and

Will Encores! Follies Find Its Way to Broadway? (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/105738.html)

Thoughts, anyone??

;D

Well, I've already expressed my interest in the possible mounting of Sunday.  I would love to play that show again.

And since I was out of town last weekend, I would love a chance to see the Encores! Follies.

What is your iPod's name? I had to give mine a name when I was installing it. The computer's suggestion was Sandra's iPod, which I found incredibly boring. So I named it Artaxerxes.

Also, what color is your iPod? Artaxerxes is blue.

Oh, yes, the sidewalks and streets here were quite interesting as well. I watched a neighbor try to negotiatie the turn into his driveway, time after time, while spinning his wheels in the snow. He was patient and eventually made it. It took many, many tries.

Back from the workshop of, well, I don't know what.  It was, perhaps, in all my years of attending musical workshops the single worst piece of crap I've ever seen.  I sat there with mouth agape, as did most of the audience of about fifty people, most of whom were close personal friends of the writer/producers and the director, which means the median age of the audience was seventy-five.

I'll have plenty to say in the notes because I must vent, oh, yes, I must vent.  Jessica was excellent, as always.  For the producer/writers and the director I say what I usually have to say after seeing this kind of thing:  Do you have a POINT?  If so, wouldn't it be nice to let the audience in on it?

A Follies transfer would be great but I don't know if it will happen. There is talk of a limited run transfer if Nathan and Matthew don't go back into The Producers. They could use the Saint James until Young Frankenstein is ready. But that would mean doing without Donna Murphy and she was stellar in this production. The money it would cost to mount even a limited run is so much that I don't know if any producer would take on the project. If they do a full, open-ended production I hope they realize that it can't be a stripped down (technically) version like Chicago. Follies needs a full-out, to the hilt production. A 5 night concert version is one thing but for this show to have any kind of draw other than we hard core fans, it's got to have some opulence.

My worry about Sunday in the Park is that Roundabout is behind it. If they are just acting as an agent and putting it their house (I do strongly dislike Studio 54, it's a bad theatre space, even though that's what it was built for oh, so many years ago) I will feel better but if they have a strong hand in producing it I worry. Roundabout productions are so hit and miss, usually miss. The successes almost seem to be in spite of the theatre. I still wince at their production of Follies from 2001. Still, it will be nice to have this production in New York.

As you can tell, I have mixed feelings  ;)

Comments from tonight's top 24 AMERICAN IDOL.

SPOILERS.

*
*

I"m not sure what i thought of the show. But i guess i liked it better than last night. If only because they showed everyone who went through's Hollywood audition. Granted not the group numbers. But we at least got to see them sing.

It still bugs me that i have never seen over half of the 24 people.  And most of the ones i have seen, i have to try to remember their stories from their original auditions (the back-up singer melinda, the guy whose wife had a baby ...). I know i liked them then. But it's been so long.

I just wish they could have shown them throughout the hollywood week so we could see if they improved.

I was disappointed with the last woman cut. Not too fond of who stayed.  I was happy that melinda (back-up singer went through). And also the beat box guy. And the guy whose wife had a baby.

I feel really bad for those who nobody knows. They are really going to suffer against people like sundance who everyone already knows.

I was trying to figure out that timeline too.  LoveMusik is a limited run, so... Unless that's an indication on how soon prospective producer(s) want to get the production mounted.  Striking while the iron - and buzz - is still hot.

BONES had a very good episode tonight with Dr. Jack Hodgins making a foolish mistake that could have cost the lab a black eye as a trustworthy forensics institution. Stephen Fry was back as Booth's therapist in delightful scenes between the two of them. (He has one more episode in his story arc.) Nice to see Brennan happy over something other than her job.

Argh! Now, due to IDOL, the show is off the air for several weeks.

I liked IDOL tonight. I think this is the first time we have heard every semifinalist sing a bit during this last episode. True, I would have liked lots more, but we still got to hear something from everyone.

I was puzzled by a couple of choices. My favorites among the women were Melinda, the background singer, and the single mother (don't remember her name).

Of the men, I think the witty, curly-haired bigger guy has an amazing voice, my favorite of the excerpts we heard. (And Simon had the nerve to tell him he didn't think he had one of the better voices but had an excellent personality. I felt he had an outstanding voice. Of course, Simon got to hear a lot more than I did.) I didn't hear anything that SUndance sang during the Hollywood round that would have warranted his being put through. That decision had to have been based on personality.

I will be very interested to hear them all sing next week.

I got the e-mail today notifying me of their upcoming Academy Awards Screening Day.  They'll be showing all five Best Picture Nominees back to back at select theatre around the country on Saturday, February 24 - the day before the Oscars.  The screenings start in the morning, and continue all day.  You get one large popcorn and unlimited drink refills all day.  And all for only $30.  Not bad.  And you can come and go as you please throughout the day.  I think I may do it.  -If there are still passes left.

I just watched four episodes of the old TV series RIPCORD.

The leads (Ken Curtis and Larry Pennell) are good enough actors, but the writers did not give their charactes even an ounce of personality....and I have seen both of these actors in other shows and they usually are quite memorable...but here they are dull, dull, dull...as were all of the other characters.

My interviewee Jimmy Baird did show up in episode # 4, however, so that was nice. I will have to make a copy of it and send it to him.
