Well, you've read the notes, the notes said both this and that, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off eating gefilte fish right now.

I wonder if our final two fixes will be done by the time I get up in the morning.  If I get up early enough, I'll do the long jog before she of the Evil Eye gets here - if not, I'll do it just after.

Has Congress become a pimp to Wall Street, as the gormandizer of U.S. resources, as another bureaucracy that filches the wealth of its masses which had been intended for purposes other than those to which they have been put to use?

There cannot possibly be eight.  Two, maybe three if you include a work address.  Two of those addresses -- identical save for one letter, were home addresses.  My Kritzerland purchases -- for the past several years -- are all on one address only.

But no, do not list my addresses.

I know of five people who'll be at the signing for sure - unless two of them don't come.  Then there will be three, although I just remembered someone else who's coming, so that would be four or six.  Then there are a couple of people from the film music board who might show up.

And maybe, just maybe, the bookstore itself will have some people who show up.  They're e-mail announcement, however, was sent yesterday, so who knows.  You'd think the CAKE would be enough of an allure.

Has Congress become a pimp to Wall Street, as the gormandizer of U.S. resources, as another bureaucracy that filches the wealth of its masses which had been intended for purposes other than those to which they have been put to use?

No, Congress has listened to the plight of Main Street voters getting crushed in an unexpected financail catasrophe. Barring the more than usual incompetence of Washington, the Rescue Plan buy-ins should actually make a profit for the tax-payer, and should that fail, there is the" tax the company" fall-back already included in the legislation. The true villains in this mess are the original con-men who orchestrated  the bum mortgages to begin with. The faulty paper has long since been rebundled and off-loaded to the nation's major financial houses, and much of it has been then incorporated into other financial instruments held by Mutual Funds which are in turn held by pension plans. The bad-guys who caused the problem are, for the most part, long gone and out of financial harm. The second class of Villain is the greedy developers who over built in most of the major real-estate markets in this country - and while they now suffer as their inventory remains unsold, their efforts to unload new construction has depresssed the entire housing market. By buying up, at a discount, mortgage paper in danger of default, the government should be able to put a major damper on additional foreclosures that would exacerbate the problem. Remember, once real estate values fall more than 10%, most recent buyers find themselves in houses worth less than their mortagage; with values having fallen more than 40% in many areas, large numbers of home-owners are now trapped into immobility.

While some will agree and some will disagree, after the little meltdown of last week, I'd prefer this sort of discussion happen privately for a while.

Well, I'm posting using my cousin's AOL account, so I'm not sure how to do that in AOL, and I'm going to try.  I know people (like my parents) who don't clear their cache for specific reasons...what they are, I don't know.  And since I might not even log back on until I get home on Monday, I'm not going to worry about it, yet.  I can find the notes without any trouble, so all is good.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua, a new Disney movie opens today, October 3rd

We all know what happens when a new “dog movie” comes out—lots of people decide they must have a dog just like the one in the movie. But what people might not realize is that shelters and groups across the country have plenty of Chihuahuas, for ADOPTION. In fact, Chihuahuas are the 5th most-posted breed of dog for adoption on Petfinder (after Labs, Shepherds, Pit bulls and mixes of those breeds).

Going veggie shrinks the brain
 (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24336544-23272,00.html)

Quote
According to a new study, vegetarians and vegans are six times more likely to suffer from brain shrinkage than meat eaters.

The link was discovered after scientists at Oxford University ran memory tests, physical checks and brain scans on 107 people between the ages of 61and 87, and then retested them five years later.

Researchers speculate the loss of brain mass in vegetarians and vegans is due to a deficiency of Vitamin B12, which is found in meat, fish and eggs. This type of brain atrophy is linked to Alzheimer's Disease and other cognitive failings.

The decision to eat meat is often attacked by veggies, but it now seems as though these kinds of affronts may just be a product of small-mindedness.

The Hollywood Palladium gets a second wind

The regal concert hall has booked performers from Sinatra to Jay-Z. Audiences will soon see if a thorough makeover kept it up to date.
By Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 5, 2008

SIXTY-EIGHT years ago this month, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and its new singer, a skinny 24-year-old New Jersey crooner named Frank Sinatra, welcomed a cheering crowd to opening night at the Hollywood Palladium. Dorothy Lamour was there to snip the ribbon, spangled with orchids, and as Jack Benny, Judy Garland and Lana Turner looked on, hundreds of couples danced the jitterbug on a 11,200-square-foot dance floor made of maple wood.

With its coral and chromium interior, Streamlined Moderne swoops and shimmering chandeliers, the Palladium that night must have seemed like a dreamy refuge in a world that was growing darker by the day. German bombs were falling every night in London, but beneath the searchlights of Sunset Boulevard, all the young lovers were swaying in a Hollywood champagne fantasy.

Still, when Sinatra sang the band's No. 1 hit, "I'll Never Smile Again," how many of those 3,000 couples held each other and fretted about the future?

IT ALL begins Oct. 15 with a sold-out show featuring a 12-piece band fronted by rapper Jay-Z, who, with his East Coast roots and Chairman of the Board persona, channels a sort of hip-hop version of Sinatra's career aura.

"I wouldn't be surprised one bit," Mueller said, "if he does a Sinatra song." The promoter said that Tuesday while wearing a hard hat and shouting over the sounds of hammers and sanders. He was standing on the rim of the Palladium's dance floor, which he doubts will be refinished until after opening night. Above Mueller's head was a chandelier wrapped in plastic. "The rest of them are out back, we have a company restoring them, recasting the missing crystals. Everything has to be just right."

Cove lighting has been installed to highlight the Moderne details and the original marquee-and-pylon sign tower has been restored at the entrance and its large neon letters revived. (How careful is the revival? Architect Christopher Coe used old newsreel footage to match the lighting sequence to the original pattern.)
...

Maybe someone will write "Murder At the Palladium".

NICK REYNOLDS, KINGSTON TRIO HARMONIZER, DIES AT 75

By WILLIAM GRIMES

Nick Reynolds, a founding member of the Kingston Trio whose smooth tenor and gift for harmonizing helped propel the group to worldwide fame in the folk-music revival of the late 1950s and early ’60s, died Wednesday in San Diego. He was 75 and lived in Coronado, Calif.

The cause was acute respiratory disease syndrome, said his son Joshua Stewart Reynolds.

Whether singing high harmony or taking the lead part in songs like “M.T.A.,” “The Wanderer” and “Hobo’s Lullaby,” Mr. Reynolds, who played tenor guitar, helped define the clean, close-harmony style that brought folk music into countless American homes for the first time.

“Nobody could nail a harmony part like Nick,” said Bob Shane, another founding member of the group. “He could hit it immediately, exactly where it needed to be, absolutely note perfect, all on the natch.”

Although regarded as overly commercial by purists, the trio inspired the folk-music revival and paved the way for the breezy and ingratiating Limeliters and Chad Mitchell Trio and later for more political artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary. “We got America up and singing,” Mr. Reynolds said.

Wary of the political songs that had caused trouble for the Weavers during the era of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Kingston Trio, formed in 1957, steered clear of protest music and stuck to a mixture of traditional songs like “Tom Dooley” and “A Worried Man” and humorous ballads like “M.T.A.” and “Tijuana Jail,” with storytelling between songs during their live performances. Mr. Reynolds, called the Budgie or the Runt of the Litter by his fellow founding members, Dave Guard and Mr. Shane, often added a zinger for comic effect.

The formula was astonishingly successful. Thirteen of the group’s albums reached the Top 10, and in 1959 alone four of its albums placed in the Top 10, a record matched only by the Beatles.

Good morning, all! I was moving about the apartment by 7 am, but I really wanted to go back to bed for another hour.  After meeting DRs Ben, edisaurus, Jose (?), and maybe others, I will head to Toyland for several hours of work.  I've got a deadline of Monday on a project, so I may try to hand off my tickets for I COME FOR LOVE at NYMF to one or more of the DRs this morning.

DR vixmom, yes, Laura played the lead in THE TRAGIC & HORRIBLE LIFE OF THE SNGING NUN. She one of the funniest and sweetest ladies I know. She was so happy to Chrs and me after. She's ding a reading of a new play tomorrow with F. Murray Abraham.

As to O.J. Simpson, it couldn't happen to a more deserving person. I wonder if the evidence was conclusive enough or the Nicole Simpson-Ron Goldman karma didn't finally catch up with the bastard.

As to the TOD: chocolate cake, angel food cake

TOD:  As much as I adore ( and I do mean adore) chocolate (and German Chocolate cake, Oreo Cake, a cake DRMusic guy used to make once-in-a bluemoon-- I saw the moon so i know.  It was a completely homemade dark chocolate cake with loads of realwhite buttercream frosting), my favoites still have to be Angel Food  and Pineapple Upside Down cake.  The good thing about my favories is that most of the people around me don't care for them, so I usually get the WHOLE cake to myself!

Favorite cake--the combined chocolate cake recipe of Betsy's family with my mother's divoon whipped cream chocolate frosting, which is our standard chocolate cake experience around here, as many of you know.  Some of you may also remember that Betsy's maiden name was Semon, and we used to call the cake, after our respective families, the Kauffman Semon cake, until we began noticing the peculiar reactions we were getting.  ;)

I got up, fed the dogs, let them out in the front yard and saw Blanche nearly jump out of her skin in unbridled joy at something on the lawn.  My eyes weren't quite "right" yet, and I thought it was a pile of leaves for a moment until I suddenly realized it was a dead possum.  Great way to start the morning, eh?

My favorite cake I've mentioned many times here: my mother's cocoanut cake which she never gave me the recipe for and will remain a lingering memory.

As for the cakes I make, I really love my peanut butter cake with the chocolate icing which is like a Reece's peanut butter cup in cake form.

Vegetable-Only Diet Ups Risk for Brain Shrinkage
Monday, September 15, 2008

Being a vegetarian may actually be bad for your brain, according to a study published in the Sept. 9 issue of Neurology, The Sun reported.

The study said those on a meat-free diet are six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage as the most vitamin B12 is found in meats, liver, fish and milk.

According to the study, vitamin B12 may protect older people against brain shrinkage.

A study of 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87 found that people who had higher B12 levels were six times less likely to experience a loss in brain volume compared to those who had lower levels of the vitamin in their blood. None of the people in the study had a B12 deficiency.

Brain shrinkage typically occurs after the age of 60 and has been linked to memory loss.

For the research, participants underwent brain scans, memory testing and physical exams. Researchers also collected blood samples to check vitamin B12 levels. Brain scans and memory tests were performed five years after the initial testing.

"Many factors that affect brain health are thought to be out of our control, but this study suggests that simply adjusting our diets to consume more vitamin B12 through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk may be something we can easily adjust to prevent brain shrinkage and so perhaps save our memory," said study author Anna Vogiatzoglou, of the University of Oxford, in a news release.

Vogiatzoglou said the study did not look at whether taking vitamin B12 supplements would have the same effect on memory.

After breakfast, DR edisaurus walked back down to her digs, and DR Ben and I accompanied DR elmore on his walk up to 27th Street. Thankfully, the rain that started while we were breakfasting had slowed to a very spotty drizzle. Then after we deposited DR elmore at his office, we walked back down 6th Avenue. Once we reached 23rd Street, DR Ben continued walking so, and I headed west...

This brings to mind a True Life Adventure from my relative youth.  One of my sisters was a Tupperware saleswoman in SLC and I was helping her set up a "house party" (or whatever the hell they're called).  One of her guests showed up early and started looking through the items and asked what something was.  "Pickle tongs," my sister replied.  "What are they for?" asked the somewhat dimwitted woman.  "Oh, they're for picking pickles off of pickle bushes," I said.  "Oooooh!," replied the woman, suitably impressed.

I will only say that I was, of course, taken aback at a handful of the similarities, especially when the authors told me they'd seen and really liked The Brain at LACC.

I've come from I Come For Love, a NYMF musical spoof of Plan Nine From Outer Space and the like, with cheesy special effects, teen romance, a military dude and, Wait!  Haven't I seen this before?

They called me once asking for possible musical directors and I gave them some names. I never heard from them again. They did call DR Jose last week because they had lost their MD and wanted to know if he could come in and take over.

TOD - There's a bakery here in DR Elmore's hometown called Central Pastry that makes wonderful cakes.  Our wedding cake was from there and my current favorite is their orange chiffon cake.

My favorite restaurant cake is no longer available.  The Grande Finale, in Glendale (north of Cincinnati), used to make a banana walnut torte, but took it off the menu several years ago.

T.O.D.

Red Velvet Cake
Chocolate Cake

Even though I have never tried it, Matt H.'s peanut butter cake with chocolate frosting could easily make the list.

Good Afternoon!

I ended up taking quite a few detours on my walk up from Madison Square Park to MoMA.  I had never really checked out the Murray Hill neighborhood before, so I did some walking around around there, and I finally came across the "new" Second Avenue Deli - which is now on Third Avenue.  (Although, actually, it's on 33rd Street.)

I ended up documenting my "path" with my iPhone camera as well as my regular camera.  One of the sites I came across was this:

There was some old kitchen equipment on the sidewalk outside an Indian restaurant, so, I just taking some pictures.  Well, after taking a few close-ups of the equipment, a worker started yelling over - well, at me.  "What's up?  What's with the picture taking?" "Can you believe this guy?" I just turned to him with a blank face, but I could tell that he was getting rather upset, so I started to leave, while mumbling something like, "Oh, I just think it's intersting, artistic".  A few steps later, I heard some neighbors talking... It turned out the restaurant had had a bad kitchen fire, and they were in the process of gutting the place and taking out the damaged appliances. -Oh... Spoo ???

*But I do think it's a cool picture.

And I was very pleasantly surprised to find that even though the Van Gogh exhibit at MoMA was "Sold Out" for the day - for non-members - by the time I got there, the exhibition galleries were actually not crowded.  In fact, it seemed a bit "slower" than when I was there for the Members Only days.  I just ended up racing through the exhibit to the final room to read a few more poems.

We've had our first rainfall since May.  It started late last night and ended just before daybreak.  It was significant enough for my next door neighbor to detect several leaks in her ceiling (we're on the top floor of a 4-floor condo).  I did a thorough check and found I'm quite dry for the time being.  Our roof needed re-doing a few years ago, but money problems in the HOA have seen it deferred year after year after several "second opinions" were gathered that said we had more years of life left in it.

Uh-huh!

It won't help posters who use "effected" when they mean "affected".

My favorite question of the day came by phone:  "How do pickles grow - on trees or in the ground?"  When I explained that one grows cucumbers and then makes them into pickles, the person asked, "So, how to they get the stems on?"
This reminds me of how you get the cheese in the cheez it (or whatever cracker that is)

Today I went to the Sioux City Public Museum and renewed my membership. They had some new SC history books etc, so I picked those up.  Then I went to Staples - then to the Lewis and Clark Interp Center. I was a docent a few years ago, but thanks to the gambling $$ coming in and the Iowa law that they have to distribute a certain percentage to the community, the Interp center has more than doubled in size since I was there last and now has a Discovery Center that had an exhibit of the photos taken when Garrison Keillor and another guy went in search of the real Lake Wobegon.

Then I went to the Renaissance Festival.   Truth be told I'm  about Renissanced out.  I like those fests, but I've been to so many that after I grabbed a turkey leg, a lemonade, watched the escape artist and figured out how he got out of the ropes, watched the falconry, walked around and saw the shops,  I was ready to leave.  One of my friends was working the gate and gave me some grief about leaving early, but hey, I went, paid the entrance fee and supported their project.  Who cares how long I stay.

Then I went to Barnes & Noble where I had a vanilla buttercream cupcake and a toasted marshmallow mocha at the instore Starbucks. I ran into a friend of mine. We used to share political views but don't anymore. He's one of the few people around here who I seem to be able to have a real discussion with and we both listen to each other and don't let each other off the hook.  It was a lively discussion that I really enjoyed.  He thinks I'm just having a mid-life crisis and will soon regain my senses.

Then I came home and mowed the yard, mulching the leaves that have fallen so far.

I met friends for lunch today, something I rarely do anymore.  It was very nice.  I decided to have the brain power lunch which was also the most expensive item on the menu, at one of the more expensive restaurants in town.  It was delicious & a treat I haven't given myself in a long, long while.

Town was busy today and I parked a nice walk along the park & creek.  Shortly after sitting down it began to rain, and shortly before we left the rain stopped :)

Back from the signing reading - we had about ten people, which is better than five people.  I did do the reading and it was fun, and the cake was very popular.  I met a couple of new people, which I always enjoy.  Sold only a few books, but the owners of the store said business has been just horrible, which is why none of their regulars were at the signing.  So, it was all fine, but I'm really miffed at the people who'd confirmed they'd be there and then had every excuse under the sun as to why they weren't - and then there were those who didn't even have the excuse, who just didn't show up.  Present were Hisaka, Miss Adriana Patti and her mother, Cason Murphy, a nice fellow from the film score board, occasional dear readers Mark and Amy, a 3D enthusiast, film composer John Scott, and a couple of others I didn't know.

I'll now relax until I have to go to the Hollywood Sheet Music event, which I'm really not looking forward to at all - it's about forty singers, only a couple of whom I've heard of and know, and apparently it's a tiny room and we have no idea how the food is (I'll be having dinner there).  Doesn't seem like a lot of thought went into it, but I'm there to show my support.  It's going to be a very long thing (there's no time limit) and I'm sure I'll bail after two hours.

Breakfast was indeed wonderful. Amy is a dear and I wish she had more time but at least she's here on business and working.

Amy and I had egg white omlettes with lots of yummy vegetables. Jose had a Mykonos (sp?) omlette and Larry had a Classic Denver. All 4 omlettes came with home fries. We all had coffee, three whole wheat toasts and one rye toast. Larry had OJ and Jose had Grapefruit juice. That is the meal report from the Good Stuff diner. They were not exceptionally busy but they did let us sit there for a while after we finished our meals and we just chatted and laughed and had a good old HHW time.

Larry, I did go up to Lincoln Center Library and the Kenn Duncan exhibit was great!!! I loved the pictures of George Maharis. The Red Shoes picture of Jerry Herman with the Judy Garland doll is wonderful. What a trip back in time. It was like pouring over issues of After Dark but all blown up. Some of those shots of actors from the 70s are amazing. Richard Thomas and Al Pacinio and Ian McKellen looking about 12 and Roger Rees. Anthony will be sorry he missed this. It's over before he gets back from Wisconsin. The Baseball and Music exhibit will still be up for a few days when he gets back so I will try to drag him over to see it.

I just bought a microwave at Sears.  I shopped for it on the internet, Mum picked it out.  I went and got it.  It's huge, but at least it cooks things thoroughly at the proper timing.
I bought two books at Borders as well:  BLOODLINE - the latest "Repairman Jack" novel from F. Paul Wilson and MAKING MONEY - the latest DiscWorld novel from Terry Pratchett.
Also took a loan-out at Borders of AMERICAN LIGHTNING:  Terror, Mystery, the Birth of Hollywood, and the Crime of the Century by Howard Blum.  It's a slice of Los Angeles history, about a bombing which hit the L. A. Times Building and the subsequent investigation and trial.

DR Jane - What comprised the "brain power lunch"?

I began with a cup of spinach soup, nice but not great.  It needed more seasoning.  My main meal consisted of a round of baked salmon, nicely flavored with little swirled patties of mashed potatoes and baby (very small) string beans.  It was very tasty & arranged very pretty.  I thought it was the best meal I have had at this restaurant.  I was the only one of four who ordered the special of the day. Considering the cost I almost got something else & then remembered twice today I was reminded of my lack of brain power. ;)

I don't believe there is.  However...  You can click on "Date" - or any of the other headers - to toggle sorting them "forwards" and "backwards".

Additionally, under "Look and Layout Preferences", just check the box for "Show most recent personal messages at top".

And when you click on the actual Subject of the PM, it will "pop" down to that message.

I did eat one small piece of cake - it was great.  The first real dessert I've had in months (last one was at FJL and Skip's - the cheesecake - I didn't gain weight from that, and hope I won't from this).  Tonight, I've already decided what I'm eating - some penne pasta dish and a Caesar salad - I saw the menu and someone is ordering for me.

I know how to make it easier to read them.

Next to date is an arrow.  The first thing I do is click on that arrow so the last email written is now at the top of the page.  If there is a way to set this permanently I don't know how.

Many of you know that my late doggie Miss Blue Moon used to live down the street from me, and spent her days tied to a tree in the front yard.  When the owners didn't want her anymore, they untied her and ran her off.....my nephew found her and took her back since he had seen her there, and they said:  "We don't want her...."  Eventually she came and lived at my house for two years...and then went to the rainbow bridge.

Last week I was driving down the street and passed the same house.  Out in front, tied to the same tree, was ANOTHER beautiful Alsatian dog....all white.....and just standing there looking at the world.....

I had a good evening of viewing. I began by finishing LE DEUXIEME SOUFFLE. Really superb film with lots of clever plotting, and it seemed to last about half of its 144 minutes. That's what great direction will do for a film: make you never notice how long it is.

And then finally, I got a two hour chunk of time and watched MICHAEL CLAYTON from HBO-HD. Excellent film that held my attention throughout. I loved the haphazard construction of the pieces so that by the time we got near the end and were back at the beginning of the film again, things made sense and then we were given a very satisfying conclusion.

Once again, Paramount has sent me box sets that I didn't request. Of the three they sent, I had only requested CSI. Back from the fundraiser - this kind of thing is not my cup of tea - basically like an open mic night but with some pros sprinkled in.  We had Andrea Marcovicci and Jason Graae as the best of them.  I bailed after two and a half hours.  This was my weekly splurge meal - had linguini with seafood in a light tomato cream sauce.  I'm stuffed, but hopefully it won't do any damage.

I came home to an e-mail from the singer I'm working with.  Earlier, she sent me the typed up version of the patter I'd given her yesterday.  Two of the set-ups were missing completely, and several key lines were also missing.  So, I wrote her back and asked her to find those things, because I watched as she wrote them down.  As I said yesterday, at our meeting she presented me with patter based on what I'd come up with at our previous meeting, only three-quarters of it wasn't there, even though I told her to write everything down because I forget things immediately.  So, I had to start from scratch yesterday.  I told her in my e-mail today that I didn't have time or patience to keep having to come up with things that I'd already come up with.  So she sends me this e-mail saying she thinks I'm treating her with disrespect and while she's appreciative of my help she thinks it's best if she does the rest by herself.  To which I replied, fine.  If she thinks that she can do the rest herself  I say, best of luck.  We hadn't even gotten to the singing and interpretation part, which is, of course, the hard part.  Any solo artist who has ever worked with me knows how supportive I am, but they also know they have to do the simple thing I ask, which is to write everything down so I don't have to keep coming up with the same thing.  Well, this frees up some time.

Oy, I meant to wish JMK a happy birthday at exactly 9:31 PST, but I screwed up time-wise.

Should I save 12500 for morning?

Oy, again, I'm confused, is JMK's birthday Sunday or Monday?  (I can't read the calendar properly.  Guess that's a sign that it's time to sleep.)

Present were Hisaka, Miss Adriana Patti and her mother, Cason Murphy, a nice fellow from the film score board, occasional dear readers Mark and Amy, a 3D enthusiast, film composer John Scott, and a couple of others I didn't know.
Great reading, Bruce! The book sounds really wonderful. I was surprised at how much it delves into today's technologies. I admit I'd never heard of Facebook until yesterday. I'm so sorry we were late! Mark is writing all the gory details as we speak, but I'm not sure which one of us is going to click the "Post" button first.

And the cake was yummylicous! Bruce appeared aghast to learn that Mark is allergic to cake. To answer your question, Bruce, if he ate one bite it would just make his throat feel itchy. If he ate more his bottom lip would swell up to look like he'd had bad collagen injections. But it's not like he'd break out in hives and keel over dead. But since he's allergic to eggs, nuts, and chocolate, I figure I could finish him off with a brownie with walnuts, if I ever needed to.

Hmmmm, I added a picture to my profile, but it came out really really small. So, I've enlarged it and update my profile. Let's see how this one looks.

I'd like to just say this, but apparently "this" has already been said. So I won't say "this," but instead I shall say: Thank you BK for not canceling the reading, and also thank you for not canceling the reading at the reading. Amy and I had a lovelier than lovely time listening to sections from "Murder at the Grove." We have all of Bruce's books, but this was our first time attending a BK reading. It shall not be our last.

Alas, we were a bit late; we initially parked our car on South Brand Boulevard, thinking it was North Brand Boulevard, and there simply is no Mystery and Imagination bookstore on South Brand Boulevard. We then moved said car, continued on, found North Brand Boulevard, and lo and behold still saw no Mystery and Imagination bookstore. We saw Bookfellows, which we have been to before, and it took us several moments to realize that Bookfellows and Mystery and Imagination are one and the same. We parked and promptly realized we had no change for the meter. The Bookfellows folks, however, were quite kind to give us change, we ran back to put it in, and then realized that the meter was broken. We then dashed back to the bookstore, gave them back the quarter we had left, rushed up the stairs to the second floor, and plopped down into two chairs to enjoy "Murder at the Grove," in color and already in progress.

Despite our tardiness, we quickly experienced a rare treat: hearing Bruce utter the word "yummilicious" in person. During the course of the reading, we also got to hear two of my favorite lines from the book: "Adrianna Hofstetter did not eat tan food" (which elicited several chuckles) and "Furball … padded over to the dining table and stretched her body into Cinemascope." A few minutes later, when Bruce read the line about Facebook being "a site that only an ADD person could love," it was cute to watch Adrianna Patti's mom give her daughter a knowing "That is so you" poke.

After the reading, chocolate cake was served, Diet Coke was poured and BK tried to kill me by offering said cake to me. I am allergic to said cake, and despite this being Bruce's reading, I declined to let him murder me. We then set back as Bruce held court, telling tales from the past, about the past and about passed gas. We laughed, and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed some more. By 3:30, it was over, we asked Bruce his recommendations for a spot to eat nearby, and we left to go eat — only we promptly forgot to go eat, got in our car, departed Burbank and wound up at Amoeba Records in Los Angeles, where we could have bought an Ice Cube cube for only $1 at a benefit auction. Instead, we purchased "Adam-12: Season 2."

Whew! I'm finally back at my NY abode after a whirlwind day!

It was so great to see Ben, Larry and Jose (and I love the picture!) and hear all their juicy Broadway dish---even though I don't know half of the shows they're talking about, I just love sitting back and listening to it all. So much fun!!

After I left our merry band of HHW, I grabbed a cab and picked up the director, who was having someone from his apartment help him to the street. I found an arm sling---two actually---for him. The first one I bought was cheap and an ugly blue color. Since we were going to a formal event, I also picked up a more expensive and stylish black one. That turned out to be a lucky find since he was wearing a black suit.

So we cabbed it up to the DGA to see Clint interviewed by Lillian Ross, who must be in her late 80's but still very sharp! They had a piano on stage and Lillian coaxed Clint into tickling the ivories for a bit. It was about an hour and a half talk, with a long montage of film clips from select movies. I was introduced to Clint's director of photography, who was very jovial, and his editor, who wasn't. He seemed a bit stressed because he had a lot of details to worry about.

When we went to leave, the director called out to the biggest guy around to help him out of his theatre seat. In the process, his coat pocket got hooked on the chair arm and ripped his pocket away from his coat. So I found a nearby cleaners and he made it worth the tailor's while to fix it then and there. (Money talks!)

He didn't want to go back downtown so I came back to change into my evening duds, and then headed to Nobu. The director had been standing in front for about an hour waiting for them to open, because he was afraid to go anywhere and sit down. So I got to Nobu about an hour earlier than we planned and hung out with him. Finally we were allowed inside---very beautiful in there!

The tables had bowls of nigiri and rolls, and some cooked fish (someone decided it was cod) and we thought that was it. But then people started firing up hot food---I had a huge scallop, some skinny mushrooms on a bed of brussells sprouts, (OMG good!) tender sliced beef...I wish I hadn't had suchi to begin with so I could have tried everything.

There were about20 tables at the party, and most had names on them, so we didn't know where to sit. We ended up at a table with Clint's table on one side and Angelina Jolie's on the other. I only saw her for about 5 minutes, but Brad Pitt was with her (in a goofy checkered hat!) and at one point I noticed he was just sitting there with no one to talk to, so I took this as my cue to do just that!

I told him that my partner and I had made the S & V documentary and that someone in his office had requested a copy. He said that he had two people that worked with him who always had their eyes out for potential new ideas for films. He said they were really smart and had great taste, so our film must be very good. I know he probably says that kind of thing all the time but it was still nice that he treated me as a fellow filmmaker.

I also had a chance to talk to Colm Feore. I like him very much (I did trailers for his film NUREMBURG so it was a good entree) and hardly anyone was talking to him, so he seemed glad to chat, and his wife was very sweet, too.

Clint, his wife and daughter arrived after most people were there, Brian Grazer was there along with another producer. (His daughter has a one shot cameo in the film...she's about 12.) His wife is beautiful and seemed very nice. The director introduced Clint to me and we both said we were looking forward to the project. His hand enveloped mine. He seems very unpretentious, and I didn't feel intimidated by him at all.

The director had already seen Changeling several times, so he got one of the Clint cars to take him home. I hung out with the woman who headed up the film program at MoMA for decades (she recently retired due to health problems) and her husband. They were wonderful company. They live near Madeline, and I told them about the macarons there, and the husband told me about a place that used to be on 9th that had amazing ones, but that they were really easy to make yourself. Yeah...right... I can't imagine them being anywhere in the ballpark of Madeline. They also decided not to go to the movie (it ended after midnight...it's 140 minutes long). I wish I'd known all these people were going to bail out so I could've called a few friends, but oh well...

I really enjoyed the movie. Angelina Jolie was great and the story was very gripping. The audience seemed to like it very much.

So, now time to hit the hay, after completing my cat-sitting duties.

Whew!

Thanks again to Larry, Ben and Jose for getting up early to meet me!!

I decided that macarons would be the perfect thank you gift to my hosts. I won't see them before I leave so I'm going to pick up a box for them and one for my partner Peter---I'll go uptown to see his family tomorrow. I may just go there for breakfast!

As far as other local food, I discovered something---I can't remember the name but I'm sure that Jose knows what it is. I wanted to get a little something to tide me over until dinner and walked past a street fair in the village. They were making these corn pancakes with cheese in the middle. All I can say is, it's a good thing they don't make these in Atlanta. God was it good, and probably a whole days worth of weight watcher points!

The director is named Bruce, BTW but there are already two Bruces here so I didn't want to be more confusing!  I was telling him about bk's CDs today---he thought that was very interesting.
