Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a little bit country and a little bit rock-and-roll, and now it is time for you to post until the country cows come home - they're currently listening to Dolly Parton and Bo Diddley.
-
And the word of the day is: OBLOQUY!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Fun notes today, bk! :D
And I'm quite astonished to learn that Bruce Villanch wrote for Donny & Marie!
-
I believe at some point John Williams stopped writing the Potter scores, but that subsequent composers had permision to quote his original main theme in a limited fashion. I don't know much about film music, so take that with a grain of salt.
-
(http://www.mii.org/Minerals/Minpics1/Rock%20Salt.jpg)

Williams at least wrote films one and three. Two was adapted by William Ross from the Williams' themes.
-
Last Christmas, I gave the DP a DVD set of assorted Donny and Marie episodes. I was more excited than he was, but we still haven't opened it yet. I'll have to check it out, maybe one of bk's 4 episodes is included.
-
Yes, David Pogue (who, even though I'm married, I find adorkably attractive) is the MD from Flora. He speaks often about his early life as a pit musician and MD on and off Broadway.
Ginny's son met him (IIRC) and DP was extremely nice to him. I love his columns and his writing because he's intelligent, fair minded and funny and doesn't talk down to people.

Shower, and out the door.

Stuff to do this morning. DR DAW I enjoyed both of those links about the WSS album.....iconic cans indeed!
-
My first question for ASK BK day.....since I enjoyed the notes so much.
When you are a guest star on a program such as DONNY AND MARIE....is there a formal introduction session.....such as Mr Lynde...Bruce Kimmel, Bruce Kimmel....Mr Paul Lynde.... Or does everyone just jump in and start working together.
How were you introduced to Mr Lynde and what were some of his comments during the production that you found amusing?
-
Wednesday morning greetings!

Yes, you're right, DR Ben. Nine years ago, I took Richard and Rob with me to the ALA conference in Chicago. They had a great time in the exhibit hall and Rob met David Pogue at the O'Reilly booth. DP was very nice to all of us and talked some about his growing up in Cleveland.
-
Ginny, I (and Anthony) would much rather have lunch with you and Richard but it looks like it will have to be on your next trip. Both presentations (which will go smoothly at least on my part) will take up much time on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Maybe I'll see you for the millisecond that you're at the FC.
-
I am not surprised that Donny Osmond is a swell guy in real life. Even at age 12 I knew it. ;)

We fully understand, DR Ben. I may even be able to avoid the trip to the FC, if Cindy in Cleveland can help me out via email. Hope the presentations go well and you and Anthony have a great holiday weekend on the Isle of Long.
-
Good morning, all!
BK, I don't recall any of those Donny and Marie stories since I came on board in 2004.
Today, I am working on Jerome Moross' BALLET BALLADS, and tonight I'm having dinner with my friend Daniel Neer, who will tell me all about his experiences with a workshop of a new opera.
I have absolutely no other news.

Is that one of those natural antiperspirant crystals or a piece of quartz?

And the word of the day is: OBLOQUY!
And The Song Of The Day Is: IT'S A CRYIN' SHAME
-
Glad my posting of the show sparked such memories. I have two episodes of the show with you that I got on ebay lo these many moons ago.
You and Cindy had such a great chemistry, have you ever considered doing an act together?
-
Fun notes today, bk! :D
And I'm quite astonished to learn that Bruce Villanch wrote for Donny & Marie!
I would imagine Donny and Marie needed good material no matter who wrote it.
-

I think it's supposed to be a grain of salt. Magnified. :o
-

Oh, agreed. It just seemed like such an unexpected match of writer to performer.

LOL!
More like a boulder of salt! ;D

Good morning!
Another day, another set of temperatures in the 90s with hot, muggy conditions. The South is not a very pleasant place to be in the summer. That's why now that I'm "retired," it's my least favorite season of the year. (Of course, when I was teaching, it was my favorite season of the year.)
-
Last night, DR JRand asked:
"Thanks DR MATTH I will try that.....so it will give me better sound than using the R/W in their regular spots?"
Oh, yes. It will give you the entire 5.1 surround sound if the discs have that encode. With just the W/R connections, you'd be getting a downmixed stereo audio stream decidedly inferior to what the disc might offer.
-
I will be working hard to finish up BURN NOTICE today. Since there are six episodes left plus a commentary and deleted scenes and a gag reel (that I know about), I doubt I'll get it all done this afternoon. I'll have to carry the last few shows into this evening. However, once it's done, I should have some free time to watch a movie.
-
Right now I'm thinking it will be the Blu-ray of ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES (since I'd love to finish up with that set and get it placed on the shelf.
However, bk's working through the HARRY POTTER series makes me long to revisit some of them myself, and then I still have a stack of other catalog Blu-rays that need some attention, too.

Ask BK Day:
How was Marc Kudisch to work with (BELLS ARE RINGING revival recording)? Do you have any memorable stories about working on that project?
-
DR MattH, as much as I like The Young & The Restless, it is just average right now. I know you were interested in the new gay storyline. But i don't think that will be coming up for a while (my guess is with either nina's son phillip or her non-dead husband phillip).
The actor who plays adam is changing this week (which sucks to me), but the story that involves him and a gay kiss is most likely only a heterosexual gay trying to prey on his gay lawyer. Not sure if that interests you.
-
Off to lunch with a friend - bye for now!
-
My first question for ASK BK day.....since I enjoyed the notes so much.
On Variety shows, at least the ones I worked on, you just showed up and rehearsed. I think I met Paul Lynde on the set - not much interaction, but I remember there was one sort of unfunny bit of dialogue in something we were doing and he turned to me and in classic Lynde voice said, "Jokes to come." I also saw him in the parking lot while leaving one day, and he was very sweet and complimentary.
-
Guest shots on filmed shows, the same - you just show up and jump right in. You're usually introduced to everyone, though, usually by the AD. On three-camera audience shows, there's usually a table reading, so that's where you meet everyone.
-
Ask BK Day:
How was Marc Kudisch to work with (BELLS ARE RINGING revival recording)? Do you have any memorable stories about working on that project?
Marc was fine - that whole album was easy/breezy and fun. He was very professional and took notes about studio performance. The only things I remember about the session are the headphone story I told the other day, plus the producers not having hammered out their deal with Don Sebeskey, so there was that drama at the beginning of the session - I smoothed it out, as I recall, and we proceeded. They actually weren't going to let Don into the booth at all, but it all worked out in about ten minutes. Faith Prince is always fun to work with - it was my third cast album with her. And I really liked all the supporting people and knew several of them from other projects.
But the most fun was having Betty and Adolph there for a while. I had nice chats with them throughout the session.

Thanks. Your mentioning BELLS ARE RINGING the other day reminded me that you indeed had been the producer. I remember when I first heard it being astonished to hear the songs sung by the very talented Faith Prince. I love Judy Holliday, but she was not an accomplished vocalist. Faith really brought out a lot more melody in those songs which was a nice counterpoint to Judy Holliday's interpretations of the songs.
-
Now I must head downstairs, check the mail, and then get started on cooking some lunch. I'd also like to squeeze in both NURSE JACKIE and BETTER OFF TED before I get back to work with BURN NOTICE.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And Soan and his father are upstairs getting Soan's room together - a.k.a. assembling a couple of pieces from IKEA - and Sammy, our handyman, is prepping the other room for a fresh coat of paint.
And the sun has come out.
Who could ask for anything more? ;)
-
bk - I don't recall those Donny & Marie stories either. At least not in that detail.
-Always nice to start the day off with a bit of happy reading.
-
DR DAW - You vampin' vamp!
-
Thanks DR MATTH - I will switch the cables tonight or tomorrow and file a complete report.
Add me as another great fan of the Faith Prince BELLS ARE RINGING cd - one of my favorites, and I keep dragging it out and loaning it to members of the Program Committee....that one and SHE LOVES ME.....maybe in 2011......since 2010 is already set.

-And Thanks for posting that WSS info. I had heard about the photo shoot before, but I had no idea about the trash cans. *And there were some other great tidbits of information on that page too!

Thanks to MR BK for answering the question....interesting....and now I have a new line to use, with the wonderful Paul Lynde delivery, of course...."Jokes to come."

I'm awake! Waiting for the ADT people to come install the security system, and hopefully they won't be long as I'm heading into SF to see a matinee of Spamalot and I would really NOT like to miss it. The DP scheduled the installation without consulting my calendar (which he insists I update regularly and never seems to use it) but I'm not bitter. No no no no....

Well, last night's rehearsal of "Romeo & Juliet" came in at five minutes faster than the night before last...we're now at 3 hours and 40 minutes! Woo hoo. ::)
Tonight, we have our very first live audience! I'm sure that THAT will speed up things. :D
-
Daily drop by time--I'm so behind on the posts, I fear I will never catch up.
Our production of The Producers is evidently up on Broadway World, though of course none of my 60+ conducting credits are mentioned, LOL.
And this morning I got Criterion's e-blast of LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, which uses a pull quote from my review, so that was kind of cool.

I'm back from the Lincoln Center NYPL and the idiots who run the building, and of course have no experience with the customers, have decided with budgetary cuts to completely screw up the research collection and divide it onto the second and third floors. It's completely inefficient, badly set up and not providing enough information to the researchers who use the collection. to say that I am thoroughly pissed off at such incompetence from idiots who know nothing but are in charge is an understatement.
I'm unhappy, the librarians are unhappy, and those idiots in charge who made the decision are quite smug about its success. Asses. complete asses.
-
I needed sugar fast! My blood sugar as I got off the bus dropped to 38 so I had to stop at the market and buy a prefab fruit pie with a crust that tastes less of pastry and more of cardboard.
-
Back from a lovely lunch with a retired librarian friend, who's about a year ahead of me retirement-wise. She had some very astute things to say about this new lifestyle.
I was going to make several stops on the way home, but it's just too hot :P so I'm in for the rest of the day, enjoying the AC and roasting a chicken for our dinner.

From DR Cilla:
'm supposed to get a call from the fabricators/installers in the next two days. They will come and make a template and then it's supposed to take 3 weeks to get to the install. The installation of everything is supposed to only take one day. I hope they are right.
It shouldn't even take a full day. Just be sure they cut it with the template right side up. Our bathroom was done upside down & they put it in anyway. When we did the kitchen counters we used a different company who did a fabulous job.

A lot of us were impressed with his skills during the first season of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Too bad they couldn't find a way to keep him as a member of the cast.

I began my afternoon of viewing with Monday's NURSE JACKIE. An OK episode, but not much plot to this one. Eli Wallach was the primary guest star.

I guess I always figure a full day because many times I wait half of it for them to get there :)
-
Then I watched last night's BETTER OFF TED. Some funny stuff, especially with Medieval Fight Club! Very droll.
-
Then, I sped through yesterday's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS which I got off last night's Soapnet. Didn't know anyone, of course, (it was my first-ever episode), but I'll figure out the storyline I'm the most interested in and ignore everything else.
YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is the only CBS soap broadcast in HD, so that will be fun to watch.
-
Then I began work continuing with BURN NOTICE. I watched five or the remaining six episodes of the show this afternoon. This will make my work tonight very easy indeed.
-
Among the episodes in that group was the fabulous one where Michael is inside a bank when it gets robbed and he sets up a series of bobby traps for the robbers. I think this is one of THE great episodes of the series, and if I had had time, I would have rewatched the whole thing again. It's SO much fun.
-
There was only one deleted scene in any of the episodes I watched this afternoon and no other bonus features.
I know the last episode does have a commentary with Bruce Campbell as one of the participants. I didn't look to see what else is left on the third disc in the set.

I see that the Academy is going to have 10 Best Picture nominees this year. I think this is a STUPID change. They have a hard enough time ferreting out five nominees each year.
Sure, in the old days, they used to nominate 10, but back then, there were easily 10 films to fill those slots. They've been nominating only five since 1944. I see no reason to change, especially in an era where really good films are scarce, not abundant.

Speaking of salt.....Yesterday I had a gourmet, creamy sweet caramel with sea salt. I did not care for the salty taste at all.

We had new flooring installed in our downstairs bathroom soon after we moved into this house. They also installed a plywood subfloor and cut the template for THAT out of the actual flooring.

Keith mentioned it & my first reaction was that they could have up to 10 nominees, not that they had to nominate that many. My way seems more reasonable. Keith said it is a marketing gimmick to get more people to see the nominated films.

Also the hope is that some more populist films (like last year's THE DARK KNIGHT or DREAMGIRLS from a few years ago) will get into the Best Picture group and thus hopefully increase the ratings of the broadcast.

I had a nice walk in Lithia Park today with my hiking group, short but sweet. After a quick snack I took Sherlock to the trails for our regular hike.
Next week we plan to go to Grizzly Peak, about a 45 minute drive & a good hike. I went online to try and find how many miles our hike will be and found the name of the restaurant in Ann Arbor with the great wild mushroom veggie burger & sweet potato fries. It is Grizzly Peak Brewing Company.
Ginny, have you eaten there?

I see that the Academy is going to have 10 Best Picture nominees this year. I think this is a STUPID change. They have a hard enough time ferreting out five nominees each year.
Sure, in the old days, they used to nominate 10, but back then, there were easily 10 films to fill those slots. They've been nominating only five since 1944. I see no reason to change, especially in an era where really good films are scarce, not abundant.
Keith mentioned it & my first reaction was that they could have up to 10 nominees, not that they had to nominate that many. My way seems more reasonable. Keith said it is a marketing gimmick to get more people to see the nominated films.
There aren't 10 good movies made a year anymore!
-
Thank you for the beautiful floor and ceiling and door photos, Jane. I am sure Keith denied knowing you when you took them. :)
-
My DH and I took a nice walk today. I think I am going to get my shower and consider myself "in for the night." Perhaps I'll have a photo or two to share.
-

;D Nope, he even gave me a suggestion or two.
-
I had a nice walk in Lithia Park today with my hiking group, short but sweet.
No, DR Jane, remember I moved from there 36 years ago and have not even been back to visit since DS Rob's 17th birthday in 2002. Richard and I will sometime spend the week between Lima Sundays in Michigan because I've been wanting to go back to Ann Arbor.
-
DR Laura, I also wish I had had a mother like you.
-
DR Ginny, the restaurant was there in 2002. ;)
-
Apparently, our Ohio governor went on the radio today to say that some groups were exagerating the impact his proposed cuts would have on their agencies. I'd rather he'd have gone to Argentina.

LOL! We arrived late Friday evening, did the "prospective Freshman and his parents" thing on Saturday morning, went to the Michigan football game in the afternoon (where it was so hot, I almost passed out walking back from the stadium), had dinner at our hotel with my friend who teaches at Eastern Michigan, and came home Sunday. See why I want some extended time in ol' A2?

Yes, he has a wife, but I don't know how she feels about him going to Argentina.
-
Of course you went to a football game. What a shame it was so hot. I helped Bryan move during a heat wave, without air conditioning in the first location, the one that needed the most work. He had roommates that trashed the place, including the the furniture most of which was ours/his. I scrubbed & cleaned for days.

LOL. I don't suppose going to Argentina would be a problem, it is what the SC Governor did in Argentina she might not like.

A "heterosexual gay"? ???
I have met a lot of those.
Most gay men become heterosexual when I meet them.

Thank goodness for the internet! When I went to see the movie THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE back in 1968 or 69, I sat through the whole film with this overpowering sense of deja vu. I kept asking people if that movie was a remake, because I swore that I had seen it before. No one ever remembered hearing or seeing it before.
When elmore posted that clip from LYLAH CLARE, I googled around and sure enough, the film was based on an episode of Dupont Show of the Week from 1962.
For once in my life I am not crazy!

I think DRs JRand58 and MBarnum will be thrilled that my friend Daniel is borrowing my DVD of THE QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE, so I'm taking that with me when I leave.
Don't forget to tell Daniel that I am a personal friend of the Queen's.

Thanks for your photos, too, DR Laura!
Here's the image that's on a lot of minds around here right now:

For some reason, my Mac no longer connects to the internet. The other wireless computers are fine.
-
My laptop is now also unable to connect to our new wireless network.
I think it's a conspiracy!
-
Back from lunch at Hugo's and doing errands.
-
Time to leave for our first performance with an audience!!
Be back later...much, much later!
-
Break a leg, DR George!
-
Have a good night DR George!
-
On the celebrity search front, we've tracked down David Garrison, Teresa Stratas, and Frederica von Stada this morning. Roberta Peters is the only singer to work with John McGlinn we cannot locate.
I adore David Garrison.
I'll tell him.

I am back from a very wonderful dinner at Sarabeth's. We both had the yellow fin tuna, yum yum yum!

Two blocks down the street. It's at 80th and Amsterdam, and the food is quite delightful.

I love the gray-haired lady chef on TOP CHEF MASTERS tonight!

re: the USA show ROYAL PAIN(S) that many of you seem to like. Apparently they are showing it here on sundays, a few weeks behind. Although i may have missed the first 2 shows. Does anyone know if there is anywhere on the internet to watch the pilot?
-
Yes, i meant heterosexual GUY not heterosexual gay. Oops.
-
Yep, loved all the pictures this afternoon on the site.

Don't leave me out! I flipped for him when I saw A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD.

Good Evening!
Alas, the rain did come back this afternoon, but it's turned into a lovely, cool, breezy evening here in NYC.
-
I had a nice evening of entertaining viewing. I began by finishing the last BURN NOTICE episode. I had forgotten a good bit about the season finale. This is odd since I've been watching the new season for three weeks, but I HAD forgotten all of the stuff about Carla and Victor. Great to see it again.

And I thought he was a good "Charlie" in Merrily We Roll Along at Arena Stage opposite Victor Garber's "Frank".
-
I watched the rest of the bonus features. The gag reel (some of it very funny) was over 10 minutes long, very lengthy for a blooper reel.
There was a silly BOOM NOTICE featurette parodying the show with the sound equipment guys.
-
Page Seven Dance!!!
-
DR George - Hope you're having a great first audience tonight.
-
When I finished my work project, I watched one of the two movies I'd recorded over the last few days off TCM: A ROYAL SCANDAL with Tallulah Bankhead.
I had never seen this movie, and it was much more entertaining than legend has it. William Eythe is VERY good in it, and Tallu is faboo! And those costumes she has for the film: knockouts!
-
Next I skimmed through today's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. Still the "old" Adam.
-
DR elmore - They did what at the NYPL?!?!?!? Did "they" say it was "due to patron feedback"?
-
Next, I watched Monday night's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. Paula Dean was the guest star in the second half of the show. Funny episode with lots of Paula's downhome cooking that looked delicious but heart-attack inducing.
-
Favorite Food Network quote: "I have to cut my heart real thin to make it tender" - sounds like a possible Food Network Master chef theme song
-
The other show off TCM I recorded was THE STUDENT PRINCE OF OLD HEILDELBURG, the 1927 silent feature with Ramon Navarro and Norma Shearer. I've never seen this, and I'm hoping I have time tomorrow night to get to it (along with the new BURN NOTICE, of course).
-
Totally totally adored David Garrison and Karen Ziemba in I DO! IDO! at the Lamb's Theater
-
My laptop is now also unable to connect to our new wireless network.
I think it's a conspiracy!
That is exactly what happened shortly after I went wireless...! If you figure out what went wrong, let me know!
-
I shall now take my new issue of FILMFARE magazine, and go to bed.
-
For DRs having wireless connection issues:
Can you tell if your laptop/iTouch/etc. is able to find the signal/hub/router?
Was there a software update, and do you now have to reconfigure your peripherals?
DR DAW - Did you run the 3.0 update?
Etc., etc., etc.
You can PM or email me if you'd like some help. Possibly.
-
DR Jane - Nice floors!
-
DR Laura - Lovely flora and fauna!
-
I'm heading downstairs now and going to bed.
Good night!

As for the Academy increasing the number of nominees to ten, well...
I just have to wonder how that will affect the other races - especially the actor, actress and director races. Just seems like it would put more focus on the "overlooked" nominees.
I'm also wondering if the move is to help movies that come out earlier in the year - that the Academy tends to forget - as well as more smaller and indie films.

Well, next time, just have it twice a week. That should fix it.

Something from the Twitterverse:
How can I test if my son is gay? (http://twitpic.com/8cfeq)
*The question may be stupid, but the answer is priceless - and a bit crude, but still funny (imho).

When I went out earlier, I popped back into MoMA for a quick visit - as well as a bite to eat - and came across "Waste Not" in the Atrium:
"Beijing-based artist Song Dong (b. 1966) explores notions of transience and impermanence with installations that combine aspects of performance, video, photography, and sculpture. Projects 90, his first solo U.S. museum show, presents his recent work Waste Not. A collaboration first conceived of with the artist's mother, the installation consists of the complete contents of her home, amassed over fifty years during which the Chinese concept of wu jin qi yong, or "waste not," was a prerequisite for survival. The assembled materials, ranging from pots and basins to blankets, oil flasks, and legless dolls, form a miniature cityscape that viewers can navigate around and through."
-And the contents of the house also include the frame of the house! I took a few pictures, but I believe the online exhibition will better serve the Art: Projects 90: Song Dong (http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/961)
*One of the first things that came to my mind was that I could sort of duplicate that installation simply by unpacking all the boxes in my room. ::)
-
Well...
Goodnight.

You can PM or email me if you'd like some help. Possibly.
Thanks very much for your kind offer, DR JoseSPiano. But yesterday the Verizon tech wired in remotely and mucked about for around an hour to get it working. Whatever they did to get it working apparently didn't carry over to today. Sometimes the laptop "sees" the wireless router, and sometimes it doesn't. I think I'll just call Verizon again; I wouldn't impose on you that much. But thanks very much indeed for your offer!
I think we'll have spaghetti for dinner tonight at our house.
