Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in Uranus, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, too, are in Uranus.

And the word of the day is: COUNTERVAIL!
-
Welcome six GUESTS.
-
Thanks, Ginny, Jane, Laura and Jose (from last night)! We had a little less than half the house filled, but they seemed to enjoy it. I saw a few people that I know. I didn't get to see them afterwards, though. The best parts of the evening were that I remembered all my lines perfectly and we ended 15 minutes earlier than last night! We're under three and a half hours! Now, if we can just keep picking up the pace.
;)
-
And congrats to Matt H. on his 43,999 Posts! ;)

Jose, the whole library rearrangement is due to financial problems. It's not about patron feedback. They have cut back drastically, reorganizing departments, closing entire areas and moving staff around. The staff is as confused as the patrons.
-
Drum roll for MattH as he hits a very impressive milestone!
(I bet if his posts were culled and organized just a wee bit, they'd make a fascinating book!)
-
Good (early) Morning. Nothing more to say-- except life currently sucks!

Good morning, all! Around 8 am I shall make my way down to Toyland for a morning of work. The afternoon will be tied up with another round of the NYPL.
DR Jose, the stupidity there is not that they're reorganizing but the powers-that-be are doing it it with no knowledge of working the research centers, so the librarians are as frustrated as I in having to now navigate a third floor center from a second floor terminus. I suspect the morons running the library feel that cutting tyhe lower echelon of staff and taking the research librarians down to the second floor will allow them to help the public with all info and procedures, but taking the theatre collection catalogues out of the third floor causes real research problems since you have to ride the elevator from 2 to 3 and back while the music catalogues are still on 3 is ridiculous, the 2nd floor catalogues are crammed into a small area not necessarily accessible to tables or the computers for updated collections. It's all quite awkward and inefficient. I suspect someone running the library said I had a brainstorm and his/her moronic underlings all said FAB!
I'm still short on my health insurance quarterly premium so I need to accomplish some rreal work roday and tomorrow so I can invoice ASAP. On Monday I have a date with my accountant to see where things stand with those 2003-2004 tax returns that NY State claims I owe them for. Oy! No wonder I'm not sleeping.
-
Sorry to hear that Kerry. Hugs to you and Sugar!

Well, I have two presentations prepared. I just have to finish the notes for one of them and then the weekend will be spent using Power Point and becoming familiar with them. I have half of each presentation already burned into my brain, having done a version of it at least 4 times in the past 2 months. I just have to get familiar with the specifics of the two different Foundations
The Starr Foundation (http://www.starrfoundation.org/)
and
The Open Society Institute (http://www.soros.org/)

I'm not much for sites like Classmates.com and all the other stuff that floats around the Internet but yesterday I actually found something from my past! It's fun but a little creepy that things can float around out there without your knowledge.
Someone at Classmates posted a photo album of our East Coast trip in April of 1971 and there are pictures of me, looking anywhere from decent to looking like I'm King of the Nerd People.
I will post two pictures from my past.
Asleep on the Bus, that's the title of my next novel

Here is a second picture. I look like I'm twelve years old (I was 18 at the time) standing in the entry of our hotel room in Virginia.

So you know where all the Starr money came from. You're a well-informed man.
For those of you who don't know, Mr. Cornelius V. Starr began an insurance company that eventually became AIG.

I read his column every Thursday, that's stalking enough, although I wouldn't pass up a chance to meet him in person. He lives and works on Long Island (I know that from his writing, not because I have personal information) but I'll have to hang out at the Times Building and maybe catch him if he comes in to deliver something in person. So glad to have that behind me.

Familiar Sayings (http://www3.telus.net/public/a7a55952/familiar-sayings.htm)

Yes, bk, the HARRY POTTER films get increasingly darker with each one. They also get more familiar and enjoyable with repeat screenings. They're densely packed with information that isn't always easy to assimilate on the first go-round. I was still noticing aspects of THE GOIBLET OF FIRE that I didn't pick up after two visits to the theater and a DVD screening, too.
-
One of these days I'm going to record the noise these creeps are making - and I'll put it on the Internet for you to hear and you will not believe it, just as I cannot believe it every morning at seven. And then I will play back the recording at ear-splitting levels as soon as these people move in to their new home after having spent all this time elsewhere in a quiet neighborhood.

There are several variations of this, mostly having to do with the contents of the boot, but I've chosen the most commonly used for "mixed" company:
You couldn't pour rainwater out of a boot if the instructions were printed on the sole.

I remember the shirt I was wearing in that picture.
Here is a second picture. I look like I'm twelve years old (I was 18 at the time) standing in the entry of our hotel room in Virginia.
Child porn!
Which makes DR Ben look even more like an Andy Warhol superstar.
Or a Calvin Klein ad.

Others:
It's come a cloud. (meaning it's going to storm)
Well, bless her heart! (usually reserved for someone who did something mighty stupid)
Well, shit far! (meaning "fire", but pronounced "far" -- usually used when something bad has happened that is as unpleasant as the aftermath of eating beans or having diarrhea).
Go pick a switch! (meaning "uh-oh", we're not gonna get outta this)
That dog won't hunt. (meaning don't try to fool me)
I don't cotton to that. (I don't like it one bit!)
Don't trip on that bottom lip. (meaning, "Stop pouting")
He's/She's gonna bust a gut! (meaning, "He's/She's pissed and we're all gonna hear about it!")

He’s uglier than the east end of a horse headed west.
He looks like something the dog’s been keepin’ under the porch.
He was so ugly my mother had to tie pork chops to his ears so the dog would play with him.
If I had a dog as ugly as you, I’d shave his butt and make him walk backwards.

Today's work project is another Blu-ray; this time it's INKHEART, a Brendan Fraser fantasy film that must not have made five cents at the box-office. Frankly, I had never heard of it, but the fantasy element of it intrigued me, so I asked to get to review it.
Fantasy and Brendan Fraser. My kind of movie!
I reviewed the BD several weeks ago. Not very good, IMHO.

R.I.P. Farah Fawcett
Very sad. While I can't say I've been a fan of all of her work since her CHARLIE'S ANGELS days, she was a cultural icon in my youth. Even I had that poster...
I hope that any media frenzy that happens in the coming days focuses as much on her courage during her last years as much as on her wild Hollywood starlet period.

More sayings that I was raised with:
More nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Or as Tennesee Ernie Ford Williams said, "Sit down, Maggie! You're as nervous as a long tailed cat on a hot tin roof full o' rockin' chairs."

Doesn't look that much like the Ben we all know and hiss on the show.
-
I watched RESCUE ME while I ate lunch. Steven Pasquale had another BIG musical number on the show (about being in a vegetative state), and then there was a Busby Berkeley-ish number that borrowed some ideas from "Little Old Ladyland" from THE PRODUCERS.
Still, some funny stuff.
-
Then I watched INKHEART. There's enough originality about the premise to make you furious that the movie isn't better than it is. Could have been a rousing adventure, but it never gets very rousing. The big action moments are always a letdown.
I just happened to notice that ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY gave it a pretty good score in their weekly roundup of DVDs. I think they were overly generous.
But it has a wonderful cast: Helen Mirren plays the grandmother, and Jim Broadbent is the book author. Paul Bettany actually ends up being more of a central figure and object of interest than star Brendan Fraser.
-
I watched all the bonus features, not that there were very many. I tried to get on BD-Live, but the network was down (not sure if it was MY network or the WB-Live network that was the problem).
-
I had time to watch the last of the episodes on THE CLOSER. Brenda's wedding day and an interesting case involving stripper/hookers. Very enjoyable.
-
When I go back down, I'm going to watch the bonus featurettes on disc four. I noticed the first one was 10 minutes long. Then, I'll be able to put that set on the chelf next to the previous three seasons. I'll be revisiting these episodes quite a bit over the next months because I think they had a very strong season.
-
I was sorry to read about Farrah, but she has looked unwell for many years. Who knows what kind of pain she's been enduring?
At times during the documentary she looked very good, and happy. I like knowing there were good times through her long ordeal.

DR Matt H, thanks for the review of INKHEART. I just read it to Keith.

As a "lost" fan, I have to say that doesn't look one bit like Benjamin Linus. Looks more like Vince Vaughn. LOL.
-
DR MattH, re: THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS's adam.
In canada we get the show a day ahead on Global. New Adam started CdnWed/US Thurs. You'll probably recognize him from Veronica Mars.
That's one of the main reasons I'm eager to watch. I love that actor.
I have the opposite reaction. I loved the actor who played Adam before. I'm not looking forward to the change at all. Although they've practically ruined the character anyways.
-
DR Jennifer I hope you can watch the pilot of ROYAL PAINS before the episodes that follow. I also hope the show does not continue to lose its humor & intelligence.
I never saw them advertise the show until last night. So i'm not sure if they already showed the first 2 shows. I tried to find out on the channel's website but it was not clear. I will probably have to watch the episode that airs and then compare it to the descriptions to see which show i am watching. I believe they have the episodes online on USA's website. But i'm sure those won't play here.
-
I must hop off-line now and do some writing. Then, I'll head back down for a free evening of pleasure viewing. I'm sure I'll be watching that silent version of THE STUDENT PRINCE and maybe something else before I watch BURN NOTICE off the DVR tonight.
WBBL.

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
I think Schroeder is telling Patty something complex, and she looks at him intently and nods. Then when he finishes, she says, "We had spaghetti three (or four) times at our house this week."
I use it when people say things over my head. Which is often.
In 2002, I did the revised version and Sally said that line. Sally wasn't in the original version, so I don't know who said it in that.

Yes, I've gotten two news flashes that Jackson, indeed, died of cardiac arrest.

DR elmore I thought you need to save your money.

Two deaths of people much too young.
Yes.
My mother was only 62 when she passed away. Not to be morbid, my goal has been to reach 62 cancer free. I kind of feel if I can do that I might be safe from my family curse. To counter all the sad news I read today there is a new drug, still in the research stage, that is very promising for cancers caused by my genetic defect. :) And it has few side effects. :D
-
Yes unfortunately I have also been reading that Michael Jackson has died.
-
Mac is going to take a little used to getting used to especially the touch pad, but I do like it so far

The news regarding Michael Jackson spread very quickly. I hope those who loved him didn't have to learn of it on the news. I remember when Rick Nelson died his mother learned of it on the news. :(

RIP: Ed, Farrah, Michael, and condolences to their loved ones.

Good Evening!
Greetings from the Fifth Avenue Apple Store! -Otherwise, sometimes affectionately known as The Cube.
*And if any DR in the NYC area was thinking of heading down here for a new iPhone 3GS - be prepared to wait. It seems that instead of having people line up outside in a zig-zag, they've lined them all up inside. Quite the "corral".

DR Michael S - Since I'm at an Apple Store right now... Was there any particular reason you chose not to buy your new MacBook Pro directly from the Apple Store? Did you at least purchase the Apple Care? -And if you didn't, you can still purchase it within the first year of ownership.

The very first album I bought by myself was the Jackson Five 3rd Album. I was either in 4th or 5th grade. I liked him a lot better than Donny Osmund. (The Osmund brothers were very big at the same time) All scandals etc aside, he was amazingly talented and I really liked his work. RIP Michael

Hi, DR Ann!
:)
-
Coincidentally - and sadly(?) - one of the phrases that comes to mind for the Topic of the Day...
... has left the building.
-
Certainly a day filled with sadness. Almost forgotten in the double deaths today are the early morning photos of an extremely anorexic Courtney Love looking close to death, herself. Following that the inevitable announcement of the death of Farrah Fawcett. But then, even before we can start to mourn for Farrah, her story is all but kicked-off the front page by the unexpected death of Michael Jackson.
I agree with a lot of the things Ron said earlier about Mr. Jackson, but there is still plenty of things to mourn with his passing. I will certainly pray tongiht for the three children of Mr Jackson, who are left behind to be placed in the center of a tug of war between Jackson's family and the childrens' mother.
Rest in Peace Farrah.
Rest in Peace Michael.
-
Welcome back, DR Ron Pulliam!
Whatcha been up to these past few days?
;)
-
And tomorrow begins the TASTE OF TACOMA; notable to me because it means that after work tomorrow, I will become a virtual prisoner in my own home. That means that I will be forced to spend three days and evenings sitting on my balcony watching tens of thousands of half-naked people stroll past my door.

Or, just another day at the Reservoir for Jose!

G'night!
-
And it really has been interesting walking around NYC today... First there were whispers about Farah Fawcett's passing... And then Michael Jackson's death...
I just got a call from a friend who's been walking up and down 125th Street the past few hours. He said almost all the storefronts are blasting Michael Jackson songs... There's a tribute on the marquee of the Apollo Theatre... People are crying... And he's come across a couple of impromptu candelight vigils...
-

I saw that he had died. I could not be more shocked!

DR Ron Pulliam - Sadly, after the events of today, I don't think your "wish" will be granted any time soon.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MATT H on His Millstone!
Thank you, DR Arnold! Very sweet of you to mention it.
And thanks to DR George who gave advance notice last night!
-
Well, I'm leaving now. I need to get something to eat before rehearsal and I just want to leave work early. ;)
Tonight's our official opening night!
Until later!
I hope many limbs were broken and that all involved had a great time!
-
OH!
And I just heard that at the end of the curtain call for 9 to 5 tonight, the three leading ladies ended in the "Charlie's Angels" pose. :)
-
When I went downstairs, I proceeded to watch the rest of the bonus features in the CLOSER set. Not many were directly related to the making of the show, and that was sort of disappointing.
The gag reel was nice to see.
-
Then I watched PHONE BOOTH on Blu-ray. The used copy I bought a few days ago (<$10) came today, and it played beautifully. Really enjoyed seeing it again. I hadn't watch my DVD copy in several months, maybe even a year.
-
Next, I watched the silent version of THE STUDENT PRINCE. Oh, what a beautiful performance by Ramon Navarro! He's absolutely wonderful in this.
-
Then I watched tonight's BURN NOTICE.
I hope with what happened tonight, the police tailing Michael et al will be over for a while.
Sam had a sweet story tonight, too.
-
The Blu-ray of SPACEBALLS came winging in today for review. I'll be doing PINK PANTHER 2 tomorrow, so SPACEBALLS will have to wait until Saturday.
-
Certainly a day filled with sadness.
I think that it might turn out to be a strange kind of blessing. The media circus and the associated vultures will be centering on Michael Jackson for the next month or so, hopefully leaving Farrah's family to grieve in a little bit more privacy than they might have otherwise not had.
I agree with a lot of the things Ron said earlier about Mr. Jackson, but there is still plenty of things to mourn with his passing. Rest in Peace Michael.
I also can understand DR Ron's feelings earlier. I know I have certainly come to despise both the man and his work over the years. But I can't help but feel sad tonight. And I think it's because I'm feeling sad about what was already lost years ago--the cool little kid who sang and danced with his brothers and then the talented young man who created the incredibly unforgettable music of the THRILLER album. That's who I'll be continuing to miss...

At least with Farrah Fawcett's passing, it was not unexpected. -Oh, does anyone know if ABC went ahead and showed their special "20/20" dealing with Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal tonight?
A statement was just released from the UCLA Medical Center, it closes with: "Jackson’s family requests that the media respect their privacy during this tragic period of time." Sadly, we all know that will most likely not be the case.
-
And one more Michael Jackson-related post from me...
I was out and about today when the news of his death broke. There were various news alerts popping up all over the place. Sadly and strangely enough, the one initial source that most of the news outlets kept naming was TMZ.com. So, TMZ.com - a self-admitted gossip site - is now considered a "trusted news source"?!?!?!?
And then there was the fake report of Jeff Goldblum dying today.
:-\
-
There's also been reports that Walter Cronkite is very ill and not expected to recover.
-
All around, this has been a very tiring day. I feel old. I'm going to bed.
-
I went back to Home Depot today and ordered the backsplash made from the countertop material. It's just the 4" backsplash, and I wanted it all along but for some reason let the "designer" at HD talk me out of it. There's no way I could have sealed a backsplash well enough to keep all water from going behind the cabinets. This will be great.
I can't put a microwave over my stove - not enough room- so I'll just keep mine on the counter. I did finds some new pulls for the drawers and the cabinet doors. I may keep looking to see if there are others I like better.
Now I wait for the call about the template
-
I agree. These deaths coming all bunched together do indeed make me feel old and sad.
-
I think I'll head downstairs and meditate a bit before turning in.
Good night!
-
DR Ron Pulliam - Sadly, after the events of today, I don't think your "wish" will be granted any time soon.
LOL.
I had it coming.
-
I have to honestly say the deaths of Princess Diana and JFK Jr. had a deeply profound impact on my view of mortality. Both were taken so quickly and so tragically.
All death is to be taken with sobriety and pause. But some deaths affect us more than others.
-
My best memories of Michael Jackson come from the early 70s....."ABC", "I Want You Back", "Ben" "I'll Be There"....those were really cool songs and I even thought he was terrific in "The Wiz."
I have to admit he stunned me with "Thriller."
But then came all the inside gossip/innuendo and very, strangely odd behavior patterns.
May he find some peace.
-
I loved the Michael Jackson of the early MTV video days, Billie Jean, Beat It, and then Thriller - those are all still thrilling to watch - and then he slowly lost his sanity.
-
I'm on my third motion picture, which I shall now go finish - it's quite short - eighty minutes - and very funny.
-
I see SUPERIOR DONUTS will be at the Music Box. I saw it at the Steppenwolf in Chicago. I enjoyed it, but hear that the ending has been changed, I'm really curious about how it's different....too bad I'm not going to go to NYC.
-
I have been eating too much and exercising too little the past few days. That needs to change.
-
During the course of my walking and wandering today, I found myself at the New York Public Library and checked out the exhibit that DR Ben and his ever-lovin' Ant checked out last week, "1969 - The Year of Gay Liberation". It was nice to see such a serious subject presented with bits of humor and light-heartedness here and there.
Hopefully, the Online Exhibition (http://www.nypl.org/research/chss/1969/) will be up and running soon.
-
DR Michael S - Since I'm at an Apple Store right now... Was there any particular reason you chose not to buy your new MacBook Pro directly from the Apple Store? Did you at least purchase the Apple Care? -And if you didn't, you can still purchase it within the first year of ownership.
The reason was that I could pay it out without interest at Best Buy for 18 months, Apple was offering only 90 days, I was turn down for an apple card but the day I came home after buying it there was the card in the mail. I also bought the extend coverage from Best Buy
Thanks for asking
-
And suddenly the internet is up and running.....but who knows for how long?
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
-
I may be around tomorrow and I may be in limbo.....somebody buy this pagan baby and set me free.
-

Note to DRs elmore, Ginny and DH Richard - Twelfth Night just got a rave in the NY Times (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2009/06/26/theater/reviews/26night.html). Shall we start thinking about taking shifts in line in Central Park next week?
-
Well... Since I may be heading to Central Park in a few hours to watch the cast of Hair perform on "Good Morning America"...
Goodnight.
-
Oh... Before I go...
While walking around Rockefeller Center, I saw this (see below). Hopefully, there were no packages for any DRs in that pile. Sadly the "Man in Brown" was just standing by that pile waiting for something or someone. ???
-
Break a leg, George! AND HAVE FUN!!!
Thanks, Cilla!

We had a good show for our official opening night! There were a few goobered lines (not by me, though ;)) and we ended about 10 minutes earlier than last night! We're getting through it more quickly!
