A while back, TCB and Jane were discussing whether or not there is a Santa Claus Challah has raisins.

The answer lies in the source of the recipe:

“Sephardic Jews, those from the Mediterranean region including North Africa and Spain, were blessed with the region's bounty of ingredients; Ashkenazi Jews, who come from Eastern Europe and make up the majority of Jews in this country, had a smaller palette from which to work.”

Ashkenazi – no raisins;  Sephardic – raisins!

Rosh Hashana, Tunisian style

Exotic, delicious -- and yes, kosher. The Sephardic community has its own way of celebrating the Jewish new year. In L.A., an expat is spreading the word about the spicy cuisine.

Alain Cohen holds out a gorgeous spiral-shaped loaf of challah, the color of cherry wood. On the top of the bread is a graceful open hand made of dough. Cohen and his baker, Yuri Amsellen, have been experimenting again. From the crowded kitchen of Cohen's Pico Boulevard takeout shop, Got Kosher? Provisions, comes the hypnotic smell of yeast.

In the weeks before the Jewish new year, the store has baked loaves in the shape of Jacob's ladder, and others in a circle with a well in the center, meant to hold honey for dipping. They've added dried fruits, apples and raisins.

For Rosh Hashana, which begins Friday at sunset, challah is essential. The braided oval bread that Jews break and share after lighting candles each Sabbath gets reworked once a year into a spiral to call to mind the cycle of life.

A loaf topped with an open hand, however, is uncommon. But in this, as in other food customs, Tunisian Jews have their own way.

I've always loved the original EQUUS art--so much is conveyed about the play using simple geometric shapes and in black and white.  I have a framed copy here in my office that you can just sort of see in my avatar pic.

And another, though this pic does not do it justice.  I love this one for it's line art.  When it's coupled with the silvertone of the original print, it screams "Big Broadway Musical!"

Yesterday I went to a matinee of Burn the Floor.  A lot of beautiful looking dancers, extremely talented.  No story or effort to connect the numbers in any way.  Each one is a stand alone production, and I must say, after awhile, everything starts looking the same.  The usher told me the show was 2 1/2 hours running time, but I was relieved that it was really only two hours.

After that, I had a bunch of time to kill in the theater district, until my evening obligation in the same area at 8pm.  So I decided to take in a movie.  The one that had the right timing for my schedule was The Time Traveler's Wife.  I usually really like that kind of movie, so I figured it would be a good choice.  I found it mildly diverting, but ultimatley, thought it could have been much better.

Good morning, all! I've tried on my suit; it fits. I damned near killed myself falling over cartons and crap in front of my closet to get to it. The situation here, with my clutter and now George's is truly infuriating. I'm hoping he arrives and finishes this mess early today, because I was hoping to actually begin tidying up the dump last night. I'm very frustrated and unhappy, but thrilled the suit fits.

Today, I have to work on my comments for the McGlinn memorial. I think there will be some good performances and reminiscences. Hugh Panaro has been out of touch about appearing or rehearsing  so I'm not sure he's showing up. He can be flakey, much as I like him and hate to say it. I am waiting for a letter from tenor Jeffrey Lentz that I am supposed to read. I know the following people have agreed to appear: Rebecca Luker, Jason Graae,  Jeanne Lehman, Korliss Uecker, Debbie Gravitte, George  Dvorsky, Ron Raines, Brent Barrett, Kim Criswell,  Margaret Jane  Wray, Korliss Uecker, and cellist Jerry Grossman. Speakers will  include me, John Vogel (the estate executor), William Hicks, Ted Chapin, Dona D. Vaughn, Erik  Haagensen, Betty Auman, Teresa Stratas, and members of  the McGlinn family.

As to our TOD, because I spend so much time in the past, I think my favorite early poster is the Art Nouveau BABES IN TOYLAND from 1903 with its peculiar toys running the sides of the poster:
Most of the early theatre posters were pretty awful; DEAREST ENEMY, a show I love, began with this
(http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt56/elmore3003/enemySheet.jpg)
and later sexed it up for the tour with Helen Ford in her first costume, a barrel

And yes, it's the Peggy storyline that irritated and disappointed me. The actress is wonderful; ELisabeth Moss deserved an Emmy-nomination for the season (she didn't get it; only Jon Hamm, John Slattery, and Robert Morse were nominated and none of them won).

Moss did get nominated for Season Two and many think she has a more than decent chance at winning this Sunday when the EMmys are handed out in the major categories.

I don't think the original 1925 NO NO NANETTE artwork says much about the show
(http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt56/elmore3003/teafortwo.jpg)
but I also don't think the 1971 revival did either, although Hillary Knight's poster evokes a certan bubbly quality for period revues like the Follies and the Scandals:

A note to TV viewers:

THough the new season doesn't officially begin until next week, many shows are starting back up tonight:

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and SUPERNATURAL began last week, of course, and continue with new episodes today.

NBC's Thursday schedule including THE OFFICE begins the new season tonight!

BONES and the newly moved FRINGE begin their new seasons tonight!

SURVIVOR begins its new season tonight (although CSI and THE MENTALIST rerun their last season finales tonight in preparation for their new seasons starting next week).

Here are some posters I love from THE BOY FRIEND (1954, Broadway)
and 1967, London, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre)

I think they both capture the 20s spoof very nicely.

The 1956 CANDIDE poster is one of my faves, maybe because I think the OBC is irreplaceable and unapproachable for performance of the score
(http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt56/elmore3003/696998685925_300.jpg)
It might be a bit too classy for Voltaire's story but it's a better match for the elegance and wit of the score than the 1973 poster, a production I loved, but which I've never seen work outside the Broadway Theatre:
And the 1998 John Caird production in London says nothing about the show!

As for the Topic of the Day....

The first things to come to my mind are two Sondheim shows: the "half and half" artwork for the original production of Sunday in the Park with George, and the artwork for the first London production of Assassins:

*I still remember coming across the Assassins poster in Triton Gallery years ago, and making that splurge purpose. I'm guessing it's somewhere rolled up with my other posters (it was printed on paper-stock and not cardboard/stock).

and
(http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt56/elmore3003/Camelot_OBC_Album_Cover_1.jpg)
I think these two posters are wonderful and tell the audience exactly what the production hopes to convey as well as the great original FOLLIES poster (how many unhappy audience members who walked out missed the crack in the face on the poster? It says it all) and the Al Capp design for

I had never seen it either until I stumbled upon it in the bins.  It literally shocked me - just the right amount of creepiness.  It's also printed on what looks like a grocery bag - which provides the brown background - so that, combined with the silk-screened nature of the graphic, and the flag as Venetian blinds... Yep, creepy and unsettling.

As for the passing of Mary Travers...

One of my earliest musical memories is going through the stack of music books my parents had - mainly Time-Life and Reader's Digest collections - and coming across "Something To Sing About", which is a collection of tunes from the "Folk Era". -Clothbound, red cover. Not only was the sheet music included to selected songs, but there were also pictures and profiles of various artists.  Peter, Paul and Mary were, of course, one of the featured artists.  I believe they were also mentioned in the little introductory note before "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" in "The Reader's Digest Treasury of Best-Loved Songs of All Time". My parents also had their first self-titled album, and I will always associate "Blowin' in the Wind" with them - and Mary Travers' voice - rather than Bob Dylan.

MattH - just wondering why the Peggy story line irritated you - so far it hasn't bothered me, mostly because I was so fascinated by the weight gain look, but then I haven't seen the last two episodes of season one.  Much as I find the leading man and Sterling somewhat repulsive, the one who irritates me the most is Pete Campbell, which means, I suppose, he's written and acted well.  I really like the gal who plays what I would call the Edie Adams role - Joan.

I was actually going to mention NO NO NANETTE but I didn't care for the only decent image I could find:

It's incredibly eyecatching in it's original silver tones and full rich purples.

It's a great poster that says little about the production in 1971 or that it's a book musical; it essentially says "20s revues of glamorous girls in very little clothing." I chose the album cover over the poster because I couldn't find a better image either!

George is here and the chaos is worse!

I used to have many movie posters on the walls before I began collecting illustration art.  I think there's only one left - no, two, no, three.  Still hanging in the den is a locandina (small Eyetalian poster) for the reissue of my favorite Fellini, The White Sheik - the 1960 reissue art is my favorite on this film, and I've had all of it including the large original release Eyetalian.  One wall still has the large UK poster for Nudie Musical, and in the kitchen I have the window card for the NY showing of Scent Of Mystery - no actual posters were made for the film - just window cards.

Sunset Blvd - signed by the OBC
Dancin' - window card original

Thursday afternoon greetings!  I've been up since before dawn, but spent this morning helping to administer a certification exam for grantwriters.  The rules are very strict about what's allowed in the room and what's not and I didn't want to sully the environment by being online (even though I'm not taking the test).  Now they're taking the second phase of the exam and I'm at the registration table in the hallway.

My sister has a middle room that served at one time as a playroom for my neice when she was a youngen.  My neice and my sister papered the walls and ceiling with posters of E.T., The Muppets, Star Wars, Smurfs, Snoopy, John Travolta and lots of tigers (they love tigers), along with some school art projects and family photos.  Close to thirty years later, it's all still up there.  My sister can't bring herself to remove any of it.

A couple of years ago I sold off a lot of my vintage original movie posters as I needed the dough and they were all just sitting in boxes, most hadn't seen the daylight in 20 years.

On my walls at home are:

Original one sheet: ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE
Original inserts for HOT CAR GIRL and SORORITY GIRL
Original one sheet for THE HYPNOTIC EYE

and in the bedroom I have half sheets of HIGH POWERED RIFLE, POLICE NURSE, and DOUBLE JEOPARDY.

At work I have the 20 x 30 poster for the 1946 Bollywood filmi FLYING PRINCE and the 1960 Bollywood film REPORTER RAJU.

Also noticed that a lot of the exteriors were filmed at Universal....the small town lot, and the Beaver Cleaver street.  Ed Kemmer drives past what would become the Munster House.....and the spider walks around the neighborhood, too....although the Cleaver house is dressed as it was for THE UNGUARDED MOMENT.

No I understand the problems George is having: my apartment buiding was a jointure of two separate buildings in the 1960s and the wall the bookcases are against is the outside side wall of the original building, so my neighbor's apartment has the outside wall of the other building. George is running into construction complications, like steel plates, etc. from the 1960 construction that make it impossible for him to use as anchor spots. Luckily, the crucial part of the bookcases has been secured, but a couple of spots along the way will only make things more solid. If he can find them! The wall behind the bookcases is beginning to look like Swiss cheese as he drills holes to see what's feasible.

We need Vibes!

The plywood plates to hold the bookcases are bolted into the wall! George is off to get some screws and washers to attached the bookcases to the plates and it's accomplished! After that, he has some minor work to do, like raise the feet of one bookcase a couple of inches off the floor to take the press off the crucial plate, and straighten out a shelf that's bent bent by the weight.

Who says HHW vibes don't work?

Finished season one of Mad Men.  The penultimate episode was the best so far, and the final episode had very good things in it.  SPOILER AHEAD:

But the Peggy "surprise"???  How could she go eight months without realizing she was not fat but pregnant - makes no sense on any level, at least for me.

BK, I have read several news articles (not recently, though) where girls really did not know that they were pregnant until they gave birth.  It's rare, but it really has happened.  Some people just didn't know what was happening to themselves.

On the flip side, I knew this one girl in high school who knew that she was pregnant, but was absolutely adamant that she never "did it."  NOBODY believe that story.

POSSIBLE SPOILER

I've read reports, stories where that has happened.  It's basically a case of deep, deep denial, and it really showed just how much there is still to learn about Peggy and her home life.

END OF POSSIBLE SPOILER

I was going to go to my local used DVD/Blu-Ray place to see if they had season two of Mad Men, but I just read some reports on the Blu-Ray that basically say no matter what player you have it takes about five minutes to actually get to the menu where you can choose the episode (forced ads and trailers seem to be the deal), and then, if you stop, you're back to square one.  I'm wondering when these companies will learn because not being able to resume where you were is, perhaps, the biggest drawback to Blu-Ray, and I'm afraid that until they fix the problem, sales will remain what they are and not grow.

Strange but true department. . .
For quite some time, I had been unable to view YouTube.  Sadness, but I got used to it.  Supposedly, it was due to a benign Trojan (intervalhehehe).
BUT, for some strange reason, I THINK it might be due to the changeover to Comcast (which has a Desktop Doctor program), as of yesterday, I have been able to access YouTube once again.  Happiness.
What I want to say is, BK, I've been enjoying every one of the WHAT IF... and TWO'S COMPANY clips!  Thank you for posting them.  (and yes, I did comment on Michelle Nicastro's "Part of Your World" clip).

I liked "I Love You, Man" - Mr Paul Rudd and Ms Rashida Jones and Mr Jason Segel were all very funny.

I also liked "Leatherheads" - but Renee Zellwegger has a funny way of holding her mouth that is very unattractive on TV....so I can imagine what it must look like on the BIG screen.

I only hope Renee's mouth and Adrian Brody's nose never make a movie together.

At midnight EST on TCM - Vera Ralston aka Mrs Herbert J. Yates - stars in a Republic extravaganza entitled JUBILEE TRAIL.

If for no other reason, if you have not seen Mrs Yates in action - you might watch the first few minutes to see her opening number in a blue sequin dress - wherein she dances and "sings" and mostly looks very surprised to find herself in a musical number.

The VERY thing I objected to. And if she didn't suspect through innocence or naivte (which I don't buy for a minute), those nosy, pushy secretaries around her certainly would have known the score. Being pregnant is VERY different from being fat through gaining weight.

In some things I think Renee Zellweger is wonderful (JERRY MAGUIRE, CHICAGO, BRIDGET JONES), but I thought she was simply terrible, miscast, and had no chemistry at all with George Clooney and John Krasinski in LEATHERHEADS. She was this vacuum in the middle of the movie.

Listening to music - was trying to watch a Warner Archive "comedy" called Get To Know Your Rabbit - truly awful, unless it gets better at some point.  Totally unfunny and charmless and rather ineptly directed by Brian De Palma - this film was shelved, tinkered with, and released to lousy reviews and no business.  And, of course, there are people who LOVE it on the imdb.

Just home from seeing The Royal Family - at MTC's Biltmore Samuel J Friedman Theatre.  A marvelous cast --  Rosemary Harris, John Glover, Jan Maxwell, Reg Rogers, Ana Gasteyer, Larry Pine, Tony Roberts, and David Greenspan, among others.  Quite funny, and I liked the way it builds through the three (!) acts.  What a treat to see Rosemary Harris in such fine form.  She was wonderful.

And I should have CD refs for the rest of this three CD set we'll hopefully doing - very interested to hear the music on these refs.  One of the scores, as I've mentioned, will require a lot of work in terms of piecing it together from all the various takes (it was recorded in a completely idiotic way by a composer who should have known better, but who, being one of the most spoiled of all composers, felt he could do it any old haphazard way).

But the Peggy "surprise"???  How could she go eight months without realizing she was not fat but pregnant - makes no sense on any level, at least for me.

Well, my Mother was well into her sixth month before she realized she was pregnant with my younger brother! After she had her first child the doctors told her that because of her physical problems she could not have any more children. (The boy died 18 months later as a result of brain damage suffered during birth). 8 years later she found herself gaining weight, but knew she couldn't be pregnant; besides, her menstrual periods continued. It was only after the baby had quickened and started vigorous kicking that she had doubts. (She Had dismissed the earlier quickening signs as intestinal upset.) Note: this was women who had carried a baby to full term in the past and who would have welcomed the opportunity to have more children. In fact, because my parents  "couldn't have any more", and because they didn't want to raise Bobby as an only child, they initiated procedures to adopt a child (me). Even though Bobby died before the procedures were complete, they still adopted me. So, the medically pronounced certainty that she could not bear children coupled with the regular monthly events told her she just couldn't be pregnant!

Well, as my younger brother Chuck bears witness, she was!

Seems that when the Doctors told her she "couldn't" have children, they really meant that she "shouldn't" have children (her deformed pelvis made successful deliveries problematic. (Chuck was Caesarian).

der Brucer

Note" some women carry "high wide and handsome" and look like at mack truck at five months; others carry lower and can look only bloated by the ninth month.
