Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled and were fun, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to figure out why veal is out.
-
And the word of the day is: COMSTOCKERY!
-
A Very Happy Birthday to DR DearReaderLaura!! ;D
-
The notes:
And when was the last time anyone ate veal? Does anyone still eat veal?
As posted on this here web site: Woody's birthday dinner was veal picatta.
Many traditional Italian restaurants serve Veal Picatta, and upscale ones often serve Osso Bucco. Upscale traditional American restaurants often serve Veal Oscar (Wolfgang Puck likes to pair it with Lobster).
Lots of folks still eat veal - it is just politically incorrect to admit it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURA.
A healthy happy year.

I've been taping Mad Men Season 3, but erasing them as soon as I've watched them. :( I think they've only aired 3 or 4 episodes so far.
-
I have to admit I watch the first hour of the Emmys (sort of) I was working on the family tree while the TV was on> Then I went out to meat a friend for coffee. I cam home just as 30 Rock and Mad Men won their awards.
I went online to see who won the other awards
I was SHOCKED and DISMAYED with Jessica Lange!
What did she do to her face? She doesn't look like Jessica Lange I remember. Her plastic surgeon should be sued!
-
Well I have a busy day before I leave to fly back to the United States.
Unless Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport has free Wi-Fi I probably will not be on to late tonight or tomorrow.
So in the immortal words of Truman Burbank: "Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!"

Good morning, all! The laundry is in the dryers and I'm about to tackle the chaos on my desk. It's one of three chaotic areas left, the other two being my computer table and the director's chair, all three of them buried in books, papers, bills, and receipts.
After the laundry is finished, I will head down to Toyland for some work and later stop by the FINIAN'S RAINBOW rehearsal.
Last night, after I had decided I had packed up enough in 12 cartons for the Miami U Library, I went through the carts and pulled two books, one on Verdi and one on Puccini. Everything else is going away!
DR Sam, thank you for the belated wishes; I do believw this weekend has been one of the best birthday celebrations ever.

DR elmore3003 - I am pleased that your birthday weekend was so satisfactory! :)
I also think that I am remiss in not thanking DR FJL for my own belated birthday wishes!
-
Good morning!
It's another overcast morning, and the temps are going to begin creeping up this week back into the 80s. Boo!
-
Happy Birthday to DR Laura!!!
-
Boo!
Are you trying to scare me, DR Matt H.?? :)
-
I have no work projects looming, so unless something comes in the mail today, it will be another day off from work. I know I'm expecting something from Disney this week and I know I should get SNOW WHITE next week. Fox has nothing coming out this week but has two TV series next week which I may or may not get to do. I suppose Criterion's October releases might start arriving some time this week. They are usually the BEST of my accounts which send review copies far in advance of street date.
-
Boo!
Are you trying to scare me, DR Matt H.?? :)
LOL!
No, just express my disgust with the lingering Indian summer.
Maybe I should have said BBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo!
:D
-
One of the items I got which I didn't have to review was the HANNIBAL LECTER COLLECTION on Blu-ray which contains MANHUNTER, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and HANNIBAL. I may watch MANHUNTER today if no work material comes in.
Or I may go to the HD-DVD stack to watch something like DAYLIGHT or BABEL which is as yet unopened.
I am also getting the urge to rewwatch some HARRY POTTER.
-
BK, MAD MEN comes on AMC on Sunday night at 10 p.m. with reruns at other times during the week.
Does your Direct TV not have an On Demand Channel? If you don't know, why not turn it on and investigate just what your dish service offers in addition to the channels you know about. (The On Demand CHannels are at the bottom of all of the other channel listings on my service.) You might not need to ask someone to burn you DVDs of a basic cable channel if the shows for the season thus far are there for you to select.
On my Time Warner cable, there must be 20 On Demand Channels which show previous week's offerings from many major cable outlets including AMC. In fact, AMC is on two different On Demand Channels on Time Warner here in Charlotte: PrimeTime On Demand (standard definition) and HD On Demand (high definition broadcasts).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR LAURA!!!!!

Today's question:
I've never been to a movie marathon.
When I was a kid, there were certainly times when I saw 2 movies in 1 day.
I recall that when THEM! opened in 1954, I sat through it twice, with the 2nd feature in between.
-
The big TV news for those of us who like TV is that the new season begins formally tonight. I have new season premieres of HEROES (two hours) and CASTLE.
Others will have HOUSE (two hours), DANCING WITH THE STARS (two hours), the CBS comedies, and CSI: MIAMI.
And DR Jennifer will have her CW shows.
-
TOD:
The most movies I ever saw in one day in theaters was four, but I can only remember that one of them was WAIT UNTIL DARK. I have no idea at all what else I went to that day. I remember it was a Saturday.

Today I am off to a luncheon I have been invited to on the upper parlor level of a historic town home in the 50s by Fifth Avenue. Should be interesting just to see the place. Following that, I have a meeting related to CLEAR BLUE TUESDAY, and then tonight, it's Tommy Tune's show at John Jay College. Tomorrow, I need to do my best DR elmore imitation, and start cleaning the place up.

I just got a Bank of America credit card that gets you free admission to every museum on the first weekend of every month through the end of the year. I'm deciding where I will check out on the 3rd and 4th of October.

Passive aggressive email of the day department: OK, so tell me this isn't reeking of attitude. Our Rave in the Nave series kicks off this week with a one woman performance by one of the cast members from The Producers. So I emailed the director last night asking if he could forward me email addresses for the entire cast/crew so that I could let them know. This morning I awoke to a "lovely" email from him saying I had asked for the very same thing on June 6 and he wasn't about to do it again. How hard would it have been to have forwarded that email? (Plus I went back and checked and he had sent no such thing). The punchline is, right after I had emailed him, I figured out I could cobble together a list from previously sent emails, did that, and then emailed him back telling him never mind, and sorry to have bothered you. Sometimes I just flat outright hate people.
-
BTW, BK, this is the same L.A. writer-director who, when I mentioned you and some of your credits, got extremely huffy and replied, "No, I'm the one who did a science fiction parody with Leslie Nielsen." LOL.

Dear Bruce: Realtors have been "staging" houses for potential buyers for YEARS! In fact, they frown upon anyone selling a house that is totally empty.
The reason? Potential buyers (PBs) LACK THE IMAGINATION to (1) picture how their furniture will fit in a room and (2) need visual aids for them to KNOW what each room should be used for.
Making matters worse, IMO, is that on these shows where folks are looking for new places to live, the PBs are forever making disparaging remarks about the wall colors. For me, it's a GIVEN that I'm going to be painting...or having the landlord paint a color of my choice before I move into a rental. Why PBs can't also get past the paint is a mystery to moi. (From time to time, a realtor will let it be known that because of the prices of real estate in today's market, buyers expect the homes they buy to be move-in ready. I understand that to a great extent. But I also know I'm going to have to add my own touches to personalize the space...and for me, that includes wall color).
PBs apparently haven't the visual acuity of figuring out how furniture might be placed to its best advantage in any given room. Never mind that stagers go for the stark, Spartan minimum in each room. PBs don't notice that there isn't enough room for that extra love seat, the armoire or TV stand in this living room. They notice the fireplace, the couch and two chairs...oh, and that lovely table lamp over by the window.
PBs are window shoppers in such houses...and they tend to forget that they're not buying the furniture they're seeing.
The exterior issue (i.e., that unpaved driveway) has a term applied to it: "Curb Appeal".
Most stagers do quick fixes with such things. Potted plants (that won't be staying)...removing, or severely trimming back, a bit of shrubbery. In the case of that driveway, I wouldn't put it past one of them to pour gravel and then rake it into a nice, temporary pattern to give an illusion of a finished drive.

DR JMK - who is this important director whose name we should all know? And if he is so important why is he staging THE PRODUCERS in Portland?
-
Oh Allan Goldstein.....never mind.

MAD MEN episode last night was outstanding. Although I am not a fan of the takeover of Sterling Cooper and the direction it's taking - we had some great stuff last night.
And John Slattery had a couple of comments on the SHOCKING event that happened at the office that really made me laugh. In order not to do a spoiler, I will only post one of them:
"In this business - somewhere, this has happened before!"
-
I have NOTHING to say.....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR LAURA!
-
I'll have to borrow back "The Creature Wasn't Nice/Naked Space" and re-watch it. In the divorce, he got custody of that movie, and I got, "Nudie Musical."
-
I watched "Big Eden" and "Wall-e" yestrerday. I had only seen "Big Eden" once several years ago and had forgotten how utterly charming it is. Ihad heard good things about "Wall-e" and now know why. I atched about 5 minutes of the Emmys in between movies and couldn't for the life of me figure out why I was wasting my time in hit the PLAY button quickly!
-
Oh Allan Goldstein.....never mind.
No, and I'd actually prefer not to post his name. But if you take the guy who made "Hello Muddah" famous and add an 'a' to the surname, you can figure it out. :)
-
Guess I'll try to get in the mood to jog.

I will say his surname really should be Dickman. :)

I just enjoyed a Hostess cupcake for breakfast. I haven't had one in years, and they are as good as I remembered.

I think that the most movies I ever saw in a theater in one day was when I was an adult.
It was during the 1970s. I was back in Norfolk, VA for a publicity gig, and I had a totally free day; didn't know anybody in the town. So, I took a cab to this multi-plex and saw 3-4 movies. One of them, I know, was the James Bond movie, LIVE AND LET DIE.
I even paid to see each one, then I took a cab back to the hotel.
-
Now I want a Hostess Cupcake. I like the ones with ORANGE icing!

DR MBARNUM - Bill Cord must be receiving residuals for his singing or voice work on 7 BRIDES FOR 7 BROTHERS, I don't think anyone gets acting residuals for work completed before 1/1960.....but I could be wrong.

They also furnished this unsold house so that it will "show" well. I've never actually seen that before.
It's called "staging" a home -- and it's all the rage (if you watch HG-TV) -- you can even get trained to do it as a living (if anyone is looking for a career change). A bit like dressing a set ...

I have spent the morning listening to the music of Joseph Schwantner, whose work I'm really enjoying. Someone had stuffed a Fanfare review into the insert booklet in this CD I got, and for the life of me I can't understand how the reviewer, who goes on and on about how much Schwantner sounds like Howard Hanson (which I can kind of--kind of--understand), could fail to hear the quite clear influence of Varese (of Sarabande fame). ;)

I decided to go for a bike ride last night at 5pm after my niece left. I didn't get to go on friday or saturday (i've been trying to bike 7 days a week).
So i get to the lake and i brought my camera for the first time all summer. And guess what? There were 500 Jewish people standing right beside the spot where i wanted to take pictures. It was almost unreal.
They must have come from synagogue or something. They were all dressed up. The weird thing is they weren't doing anything. Just standing and talking (there is a place to have bbqs or picnics).
-
bk - As DRs Ron Pulliam and Miss Karen have already mentioned, "staging" is THE way to sell a house. Well, "they" thinks it's the only way to get a house sold. Personally, I'd rather walk into a new(!) house and see it as NEW: no furniture, neutral paint colors, neutral rugs, etc. Buying a new house with that "already lived in" feeling just doesn't make sense to me.
-
DR Jennifer - they were probably celebrating Taschlich - where you metaphorically "throw the sins on the water" in preparation for Yom Kippur.

So...
When I left the apartment yesterday afternoon, I headed down to Chinatown to meet up with my friend, Allen, to grab some lunch. Alas, since the San Gennaro Festival was in full swing, the sidewalks and streets were WAY too crowded, so after we picked up a banh mi at the jewelry store, and some fresh tofu "pudding", we headed back uptown. We met up with another friend, Julie, at a dog park on the East Side in Tudor City - just above the U.N. -And her dog, Edison, was also there - along with a lot of other cute canines.
I then met up with some other friends, and we headed out to Coney Island for a walk on the boardwalk, some Russian food, some beer, and then an incredible Azerbaijani meal. -Which was also incredibly cheap: two appetizers, three entrees and drinks all for under $50!
So, by the time I got home around midnight, I was just a bit too tired to post or to do anything for that matter. Then about nine hours later, I woke up. :)
*So, I guess I missed the Emmy's. ::)
-
Thanks for posting the youtube link to NPH's opening number, it was swell!
I did not watch the Emmy's last night as I got busy doing some other things.
"other things" - Is that a euphemism?

bk - As DRs Ron Pulliam and Miss Karen have already mentioned, "staging" is THE way to sell a house. Well, "they" thinks it's the only way to get a house sold. Personally, I'd rather walk into a new(!) house and see it as NEW: no furniture, neutral paint colors, neutral rugs, etc. Buying a new house with that "already lived in" feeling just doesn't make sense to me.
I've bought three houses - none of them "staged" - and I completely agree with you - I want to see it sans anything - I have imagination, and that's the fun of it, frankly.
-
That was FAST, Jrand! Now, how fast will you read it?

I've jogged and I've done my morning errand and came home to find this wonderful review from our very own DAW on amazon:

How fast can I read it?
My review is already posted on Amazon.

Thanks, JRand59!!!! I just figured it out on my own, but now must wait 24 hours for the errant "e" to appear.
I find it quite ironic that a proofer committed a typo. :P

Here we are another week of waiting and little work being done.
I'm listening to Russell Davies on BBC 2 to relax. I just finished the Clark Foundation and will move on to one of the Donnelley Foundations. I am tempted to go to the vending machine and get a Baby Ruth but based on conversations with my doctor I must refrain from treats that are not fruit or small servings of almonds or walnuts and the like.
I have begun to take Omega-3 Fish Oil. Boy, who knew those fish could produce such big pills ;)

;D
-
I gotta tell you. My lunch meeting is at a Mexican restaurant I've never been to. Pray for Rosemary's Baby.
-
Now I want a Hostess Cupcake. I like the ones with ORANGE icing!
Yum! I've never seen orange Hostess Cupcakes. I will now be on the look for them.
OH! The Orange Ones are my favorites! Well, one of them. ;)
*They actually look more "yellow" than "orange" in the package, so you may have seen them before but didn't realize it.

That's what she said.

Whatever... ::)

DR Elmore, the check is in the male.

I have, too, DR Ben, and can hardly swallow them without gagging.

Hmmm...I donno--that picture does not make it look too appetizing...
-
I just found out via Facebook that one of my college classmates died a few days ago of a heart attack. He was only 42. So, coupled with the shock of hearing about his death, I'm sort of confused(?) by the forming of a group on Facebook to honor his life and memory. -Although, this is the second "death group" I've been asked to join in the past few months.
-
Adriana arrived here today as well. She pointed out to me that I should probably read the first 2 books in the series (which I have on my shelf) before this latest one. The sparkling gift was worth the wait!
-
Jrand, you are FAST beyond compare! And what a review! You really "got" everything.

DR Jose - I'm sorry to hear about your friend's death.
Thanks, DR Ginny - Although, since I hadn't seen Bobby in about 20 years, well... But still - and I can't really think of a more delicate way to put this, but... I shouldn't be at an age where my classmates are starting to die. Or something like that. ??? :-\
-
Jose, Magically Delicious sounds like a great idea. I will never get my DH to NYC. Nor LA (willingly).
-
Ben, you have reached the point with your cholesterol that there is little pleasure in food any more. It means you really only get to splurge on your birthday.
-
Hence the Hostess Cupcakes once every few years.
-
DR JOSE - most shocking news. I have not been asked to join a Death Group. I think I am glad about that.
DR DtM - yes don't look at it, just eat it. The combination of the orange icing, the orange flavored cake, and the cream filling is tres jolie....tres tres jolie.

~~~FINDING THE CHECK VIBE$~~~
for DR elmore3003!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, DR DAW! I just found it mixed in with a pile of unpaid bills I had taken off the table. Relief!
So, i've made out my first FR invoice and I have questions needing answers from Local 802. Is anyone in Music Prep today? NOPE!!!
-
Hmmm...I donno--that picture does not make it look too appetizing...
Just eat it!
;)
But someone already took a bite out of it!
-
DR Dan (the Man) - I did end up making a stop at the Comcast Center Saturday morning to watch "the wall". WOW!!!! I had originally only planned to stay for about five minutes... then about 25 minutes later... Again, WOW!!!
-
TOD: For home viewings, the most movies I've watched in one day were those of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I used to treat myself to a Fred and Ginger day on the occasional weekend when I was living in Naples, Italy.
I'd watch:
The Gay Divorcee
Follow the Fleet
Top Hat
Swing Time
Carefree
Shall We Dance
The Barkleys of Broadway
Other weekends, I might do a "Die Hard" festival followed by a "Lethal Weapon" festival. During those years, there were only three movies in each series on home video. I'd also do the occasional "Rocky" festival and watch the first four movies.
-
TOD:
Going to the movies, the most I've seen in one day I saw in January 1968 with my college roommate and two friends. We were just back at school from Christmas break and wanted some entertainment on a Sunday afternoon.
So...we went to see "Valley of the Dolls", "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner."
The latter film didn't fare too well with any of us as we were so thrilled with "Bonnie and Clyde" that we regretted we hadn't stayed and watched it again. Also, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" just wasn't as palatable as it might have been had we not seen "Bonnie and Clyde" on the same day.
-
Oh Allan Goldstein.....never mind.
No, and I'd actually prefer not to post his name. But if you take the guy who made "Hello Muddah" famous and add an 'a' to the surname, you can figure it out. :)
Allan Shermana?
-
As for the Topic of the Day....
The most I've done in one day was five, and that was during one of the "Oscar Nominee" screenings two(?) years ago:
11:00am - "Babel"
1:45pm - "The Queen"
3:45pm - "The Departed"
-Dinner Break-
7:00pm - "Letters from Iwo Jima"
9:45pm - "Little Miss Sunshine"
It was a good day of movie-going and movie-viewing. Only $30 and that included unlimited popcorn and drinks.
-
I purchased a few homegrown DVD's - four of the Lex Barker Tarzan films - DR MATTH mentioned them last week, albeit on OFFICIAL versions....and the two Gordon Scott Tarzan films.....
-
OK - I need to get out of the apartment for a bit. It's another gorgeous day here in NYC, and I should be a part of it.
Laters...
-
5 -! Count 'em 5! - guests today? BK, what did you do?
-
Robert Kimball's latest, to be published in October:
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51t4-%2BijfNL._SS500_.jpg)
-
I did the entire PLANET OF THE APES series in a marathon sitting once.
I did the first three STAR WARS films in a marathon, too.
I sat through THE SOUND OF MUSIC three times in one day, plus three times the next day.
I have also seen THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?
I have seen THE MARATHON MAN. (He's nothing like the muffin man who lives in Drury Lane).
-
That's a great cover!
-
I am watching YES, MY DARLING DAUGHTER on TCM. Frances Farmer did this play at Avondale during the early 1960's and I bet she was terrific. I had never seen the movie.
A daughter decides to go away for a weekend with her boyfriend who is leaving for two years. Her mother is against it. It just so happens that visiting the family that weekend is the man that the mother spent the night with back in the day ....
Roland Young and Fay Bainter are the mother and the man.....May Robson is the grandmother. They are all terrific. Even Jeffrey Lynn as the boyfriend is fine. The only weak link - Priscilla Lane as the daughter.
-
Oops....no Frances did that show at for the Madison County Dramatic Players group.
-
Everytime I see the words "Filled Fun," it gives me a hankering for Stuffed French Toast...
-
I've been taping Mad Men Season 3, but erasing them as soon as I've watched them. :( I think they've only aired 3 or 4 episodes so far.
BK, I've been recording them for a friend of mine, but not saving them once I've burned the disc. I'll ask if she still has the first disc with the first four episodes. There have only been two more episodes (I think). I'm sure that they're on Comcast On-Demand, but I don't remember how many episodes they keep. I'll check that tonight, too.
-
Callie FINALLY left lots of presents.
Great news!!!! :D
VERY GOOD NEWS!! ;D
-
I thought bk was particularly boisterous in today's notes. :)
-
Gratuitous Post #
I think I will wander down to MTI and pick up the second draft of Act One of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, head down to Toyland, and then go to the FR rehearsal.
I will check in from Toyland.
Ashland could use some mega vibes.
A fast-moving fire has scorched between 30 and 50 acres on the southern edge of Ashland and filled the skies over town with thick smoke and hot ash.
Witnesses said homes and structures had burned, but fire officials didn't have details yet. The burnt remains of a home in the 1500 block of Tolman Creek could be seen.
We are having a very, very windy day. So far the fire is on the outer edges of Ashland. We are the opposite direction of the wind & are not in danger.
I could see & smell the smoke from the hiking trails. Keith called to see if I was ok. I didn't realize the enormity of the fire until I was approaching my car and could see the red smoke. The fire was still on the other side of the Tolman Creek road as I left. I noticed buses at the elementary school as I drove by. I'm guessing they are, or were on standby to take the children elsewhere. I've been tracking the fire & it is above the school.
Best friend John and I did a very late lunch today, so I did some viewing before lunch and had some time to do viewing after lunch, too.
I watched one more NCIS episode before putting the box set back on the shelf (I've worked my way back around to where I had started with NCIS some months ago.) This was the episode where Michael Bellasario joins the cast in a story arc as Ziva's assistant. Story was pretty good with a marine's wife doing a softcore porn website to bring in extra money and she gets snuffed in the middle of a telecast. Good episode with a great surprise ending.
-
After I put up NCIS, I took down from the to-watch shelf a TV box set that's been sitting there for several years: THE CASE-BOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, a set of Jeremy Brett/Edward Hardwicke Holmes-Watson adventures.
I began with THE DISPPEARANCE OF LADY FRANCES CARFAX. Not a great mystery, but wow was I impressed with the quality of the show on DVD upconverted to 1080p. The early Holmes DVDs looked washed out and grainy as I recall, but this first one in this set at least was beautifully sharp, very colorful, and looked almost new. I'm looking forward to slowly making my way through this box set.
-
Page Eight Dance!!!
-
When I got in from lunch, I watched today's installment of AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys were on with Noah's "stalker" around, so that looks like it will be a fun triangle.
-
Then I rewatched the opening of the Emmys (a couple of times) and skimmed through to hear some other excellent acceptance speeches including those of Cherry Jones and Michael Emerson.
I'll delete it later tonight. I might rewatch that opening one more time. Looked glorious in high definition.
-
DR Dan (the Man) - I did end up making a stop at the Comcast Center Saturday morning to watch "the wall". WOW!!!! I had originally only planned to stay for about five minutes... then about 25 minutes later... Again, WOW!!!
Yep--it's pretty mesmerizing, isn't it?
-
I really have not decided what I'll watch tonight for fun. I'll join HEROES at around 8:35 or so which should take me up to 10 p.m. by the time I catch up with the "live" broadcast. I'll save CASTLE to watch tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch.
I have last night's MAD MEN to watch at some point but I'll likely save the SHERLOCK HOLMES hourlong shows to watch one a day as I did with CASTLE.
-
PT this morning went very well. I got a new set of stretch exercises to add to my growing litany, and I am SO encouraged to be feeling about 90% of what I was at my best. I can only hope that my improving health continues. I also hope to be able to pick back up some of my weight training that had to go by the wayside once this malady occurred. That would truly make me happy.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR LAURA!!!!!
Then I should get mine tomorrow. :)
Vibes for Ashland. These forest fires are just awful.
Well, I have some computer things to tidy up and then I'll head back down to continue with leisure viewing for the rest of the evening.
Back from a wonderful lunch, although I must say it was the company that was wonderful rather than the food. It was one of these "nouveau" Mexican jernts and the food is exactly what you'd expect from a "nouveau" Mexican jernt - weird sauce, weird cheese in the cheese enchiladas, weird beans, weird rice, and the worst guacamole ever. I had two cheese enchiladas that were about the size of one cheese enchilada at Casa Vega. I ate it all, but it was blah. But I did make the deal for the fun project I've been alluding to and it's definitely a good deal.
-
DR Elmore - I'm so glad you found your check. What I found in my email just now is a discount offer for tickets to The Royal Family and I'm about to order ours for the Sunday matinee!
Very sad DR Jose, way too young. My condolences on your classmates.
-
When I was a teen, I would theater hop (long before cineplexes) - I'd start at ten in the morning on one end of Hollywood Blvd. and work my way down and see four or five films in one day and evening. I used to love doing that.
DR elmore thank you for the friends & children vibes!
The most movies that I've seen (in theaters) in one day is three...I can't remember what they were, but it was with my niece. She used to go to movies all the time. My two aunts (my dad's sisters) told me that they've gone to four movies in one day. They go to movies together all the time.
I think that the most movies (not TV show episodes) that I've watched at home was five. It's been quite a while since I've seen more than two in one day, either in the theaters or even at home.
Oh, well... :)
Thanks DRS Laura & Ginny.
The latest update is 100 homes in immediate danger...as many as 400 could be threatened. The elementary school has been evacuated to the middle school. I must say I'm impressed how quickly the buses were at the school as a precaution.
An evacuation center is being set up in town & the governor gave an order to release firefighting resources.
The updates are slow. As far as I know some structures & 2 homes have been lost. The wind has not died down. Many of the homes being evacuated are near my hiking trails. I hope the homes, trails & bear will be ok.
-
Getting down to Toyland was a nightmare: I rode an subway to lincoln Center and transferred to a No 11 bus; it was packed with about 80% of the seats filled with schoolchildren riding for free while only 20% of the paying customers sat. The rest of the mob stood, and this really pisses me off. I've paid my damned $2.25 for the fuckin ride. After that, I had a nice visit at MTI, picked up the music, and got onto a jammed subway car to Toyland.
-
DR DAW thanks. I am finding this scary & also grateful we are fire free. Of course I'm too aware that could change in an instant. Our neighbor said friends will be staying with her tonight. I said to call if she knows of others in need. I did call some friends near the area & they weren't home. I left a message. I'm pretty sure the wife has a brother who is not in the evacuation area. Thank goods Doug's family is on the other side of town.
Murder At The Hollywood Historical Society (http://www.kritzerland.com/historical.htm) has just arrived!! Thanks, BK! Love the sparkling prize and inscription in the book. :D
-
Fantastic! I got my new Adriana Hofstetter book in the mail. I love the book, I love inscription, I love the gift, AND I love the dedication.
-
Now read it, and write a review! :)
Getting to my lunch meeting was a nightmare, too. I took Beverly Glen and approaching Wilshire the traffic was backed up over a block. The police had blocked off the street and the street that would lead you into Westwood Village, so we all had to turn around and take a side street to the east. That led down towards Wilshire but they had that blocked off too. No signs, no here's why it's happening - so we all had to turn around and head up a very narrow hill and then back down to Wilshire. Absurd.
-
Do we have any expert musicologists here of 20s and 30s music? Where you might be able to recognize the name of a tune? A free CD will come to the first person who does. e-mail me if you really think you can figure it out, and I'll tell you how to proceed.
DR MBarnum, there is now a separate fire in Medford....http://www.mailtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090921/NEWS07/909219991 I hiked in the area just a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks again, Jane.
I will have to eat something else - those enchiladas were terrible and I've got to get the taste of them out of my mouth. I don't think it was a very caloric lunch plus I ran, so I think I may have eggs and bacon or a turkey sandwich in a little while.
Oh it's now Anderson Mainstage Theater.
I like Lex Barker as Tarzan, although he is covered from above his waist to nearly his knees in his costume.
But even though I was introduced to the character as played by Mr Johnny Weismuller - my favorite Tarzan is Gordon Scott.
And who knew Tarzan had a bitchy side:
Sara Shane: I'm returning his borrowed airplane.
Tarzan: There was a different girl flying that plane last year.
Has anyone ever tried to watch all three extended versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in one day?
I saw the original Broadway production of Angels in America, Parts 1 & 2 in the same day. I had trouble focusing by the end.
The closest I've come to the former is watching the entire trilogy (extended) over a period of TWO days. . .I watched until the disc change of THE TWO TOWERS one night, the remaining three discs the next.
When it appears on Blu-Ray, I think the temptation to watch it all in one sitting will prevail. Though lately, I can't even sit through either cut of Jackson's KING KONG in one sitting. . .Age creeps up in unexpected ways. . .
I had no problem with ANGELS IN AMERICA in a single sitting here on tour. Jonathan Hadary, I think, played the Ray Cohn role.
Also Carnegie-Mellon did NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, and I saw all parts in one day.
Do we have any expert musicologists here of 20s and 30s music? Where you might be able to recognize the name of a tune? A free CD will come to the first person who does. e-mail me if you really think you can figure it out, and I'll tell you how to proceed.
I can try.
-
Thanks, Laura, Jane, and Jack for the energy vibes. I am actually considering buying some Geritol and giving it a try. Hopefully I will be better before I leave for Italy. It would be pretty embarrassing to feel even older than the Pope!
-
Oh it's now Anderson Mainstage Theater.
It will change back to Farmer Mainstage Theater after it meets Mikesell.
-
Nice pics.
-
Good news from MR BK about the upcoming "dream" release.
DITTO!!
-
Very nice pictures, Jane!
It is very strange, I contributed some money to a certain un-named sitting U.S. President; and since then I have started receiving at least three or four e-mails from the man a week (well, they are signed by him). Now, if he is gets to call me Thomas; why should I have to continue to call him Mr. President?
-
I think my favorite Tarazan will always be DR Pogue's friend, Denny Miller.
-
Thank you DR George.
Thanks DRS for all the fire free vibes. They seem to be working. The news has reported the fire is almost contained & they hope to have it completely contained within the hour. I pray they are right!
~~~ENERGY & GENERAL FEEL-GOOD VIBES~~~
FOR DR TCB!!!!!!!
Thank you, flapjack!

In the past couple of hours I have watched Oprah's Salute to the '60s (with the Chicago Jersey Boys), prepared/eaten a lovely salmon & corn-on-the-cob dinner for/with my family, booked airline reservations to NYC for Richard and me, and ordered discounted aisle seats for The Royal Family.
-
I want to go on a hike with DR Jane.
I want you to hike with me too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR LAURA!!!!!
In honor of your birthday Callie FINALLY left lots of presents. I won't send them, but we're doing a happy dance
Thanks, Cilla. I'm glad Callie left you the presents!
Me Too!
-
Thanks for the good wishes for Callie
-
I think the kittens are out of the woods for now. Now they have red eyes, so they will see the shelter vet tomorrow.
-
I just found out via Facebook that one of my college classmates died a few days ago of a heart attack. He was only 42. So, coupled with the shock of hearing about his death, I'm sort of confused(?) by the forming of a group on Facebook to honor his life and memory. -Although, this is the second "death group" I've been asked to join in the past few months.
So sorry to hear this Jose. my condolences
-
I had a turkey sandwich (small) and a piece of pie. Just what the doctor ordered. Also, the plumber ordered it. Why these people can't go their own way is anyone's guess.
-

Yeah!!! Do they have names yet?

What a perfect birthday present DR Laura. Congratulations and continued health vibes for the little ones!

My mom is getting ready to watch her favorite show...Dancing With the Stars. She watches from her recliner and takes notes. She just told me she has to hang up the phone so she can go pick out her seat....lol... I'm sure there's a line of people in her tv room waiting to get her recliner
-
Callie is doing great tonight. I think we made it through this episode. Now, I'm going to have my cat sitter come over so I can teach her how to use an eyedropper so Callie doesnt' go without meds when I'm gone. There's just too much in the bottle when I come home, she's had problems with the eyedropper in the past. sheesh!
-
I gave the naming rights to the pastor's wife, Karen, since her giving the fluids is what saved them. She is taking this task very seriously.

I'm looking forward to seeing photos with names when they start gaining strength.
-
Cillaliz, I use a needle-less syringe to give meds. I can just squirt it in. I think it is easier than an eyedropper.
-
I would like to give DR TCB some energy.
-
We have to get the eyes cleared up before photos.

;D Cute.

Just on the amc website - all episodes are being repeated, most of them next Sunday, so I've got them all set to record - I should finish season two tonight or tomorrow, and then I'll be all ready for the marathon viewing of the first seven episodes, and then I'll be all set to record from that point on.
-
Good luck with the pet sitter DR Cilla.
-
Laura, I use the eye dropper because Callie panicked when I used the syringe. She just laps them up with the eye dropper. I think it would be easier to teach my cat sitter to use the eye dropper than for callie to get used to the syringe, but I could be wrong about that
-
Thanks Jane. I really like her and the girls like her. I think we'll get it figured out
-
Is any DR planning on watching the new television program Flash Forward?

Is any DR planning on watching the new television program Flash Forward?
I am...it looks very intriguing.

The DH has been very sick the past few days with a high temperature. His doctor's office thinks is it the H1N1 virus. I've been sleeping in another room and have never washed my hands so much in my life!! So far, so good.
-
Time for Dancing with the Stars. Looking forward to seeing this years group. I think they are starting with too many couples, but we'll see. I think there are 20 couples. Isn't that a bit insane?
-
Meanwhile, I will be driving him to the hospital tomorrow for an endoscopy. [Unrelated and pre-scheduled]. It's like a colonoscopy, but for your throat.
-
I'm glad the eyedropper works for you, Cillaliz. That's good.
-
20 couples. Isn't that a bit insane?
I would love to see them all take the stage... at the same time. :D
It would be like the opening sequence of A Chorus Line. :)

Tell us about your cake, Laura DR.

Loved the opening to "The Boys are Back in Town"

It was a double pack of Hostess cupcakes. DR Kerry gave them to me. :)

I don't think he should do that if he is sick, for his sake & the other patients. Have you talked to the doctor's? I've had the procedure & I can't imagine doing it while sick.
HEALTH VIBES FOR YOU BOTH!!!
-
There are only 16 couples....still....
-
I'm sitting outside using the laptop & a tree frog is chirping/clicking away.
-
Thank you, DRs Cillaliz and Jane!!
-
Have you talked to the doctors?
Good point. We'll check in the morning. The procedure isn't scheduled until mid-afternoon.
-
After my 2nd endoscopy my throat was rather painful.

I just spent the last hour in a LIVE CHAT with Joe Nichols.
Greatest moment - he did a "shout out" to Miss Dixie Bell. :)

I just received email from my friends near the fire area. They are back home. :)
VIBES THE FIRE STAYS CONTAINED, AND THE ONE IN MEDFORD IS SOON UNDER CONTROL!
As for the 3rd fire, I read that on Twitter & haven't seen anything about it in the news.

I just got in from the FINIAN'S RAINBOW rehearsal and I'm ready to crash. I caught the last half of Jenna Elfman's new series. Not too good, I thought. THE CLOSER reruns ar better.
BK, if no one's identified your 20s song, I'll give it a try. My Kritzerland package is here but I have not opened today's mail yet.

Is any DR planning on watching the new television program Flash Forward?
I thought it was a movie. Our DVR is already full or I would.
-
Thanks, DRs George, Laura, td, and Ginny! :)
-
I've heard that Flash Forward is the new Lost. ???
-
We thought the first episode of LOST was fantastic, slowly we lost interest.

Did anyone watch the pilot for COMMUNITY?

Did anyone watch the pilot for COMMUNITY?
I did. It was cute...but not knee-slapping hy-larious. I'll watch it for a while to see if it's really any good.
-
Thanks George. I missed it & don't really have room to record it. I do have a 2nd DVR & will put it there. It may be awhile before we watch so please let me know what you think of the following episodes.

Sure...I just have to remember to find out when it regularly airs. I recorded a re-broadcast of the pilot.

What's Flash Forward?
SPOILERS!!!!!!
FlashFoward (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441135/) (no space) is a new series based on a book called Flashforward (http://www.amazon.com/Flashforward-Robert-J-Sawyer/dp/0812580346/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253582913&sr=1-1), by Robert J. Sawyer, originally published in 1999. Here's the Publisher's Weekly review (as posted on Amazon) for the original book:
From Publishers Weekly:
A science experiment that unwittingly shuts down all human consciousness for two minutes is the catalyst for a creative exploration of fate, free will and the nature of the universe in Sawyer's soul-searching new work (after Factoring Humanity). In April 2009, Lloyd and Theo, two scientists at the European Organization for Particle Physics (CERN), run an experiment that accidentally transports the world's consciousness 20 years into the future. When humanity reawakens a moment later, chaos rules. Vehicles whose drivers passed out plow into one another; people fall or maim themselves. But that's just the beginning. After the horror is sorted out, each character tries desperately to ensure or avoid his or her future. Trapped by his guilt for causing so much destruction and driven by a need to rationalize, Lloyd tries to prove that free will is a myth. Theo discovers that he will be murdered and begins to hunt down his killer tempting fate as in the Greek dramas of his ancestors. Some people start on their appointed roads early, others give up on life because of what they've seen. Using a third-person omniscient narrator, Sawyer shifts seamlessly among the perspectives of his many characters, anchoring the story in small details. This first-rate, philosophical journey, a terrific example of idea-driven SF, should have wide appeal. (June) FYI: Sawyer is the president of the Science Fiction Writers of America.
The TV series doesn't flashforward 20 years into the future, though. Everyone flashes forward to April 29, 2010. And the protagonist of the TV show is an FBI agent, not two scientists from CERN.
END OF SPOILERS!!!!!!

The evacuation centers are staying open all night. The fire is not contained yet & firefighters have left the South Ashland fire to work on the East Medford fire.

I love my sparkling gift and I cannot wait until tomorrow to listen to "The Night They Raided Minsky's!"

Time for me to head home.
Until later!

Is any DR planning on watching the new television program Flash Forward?
Yes, I plan to sample it this week.
BK, a new show with allegedly a complex storyline a la LOST. It comes on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on ABC.
-
Did anyone watch the pilot for COMMUNITY?
A friend of mine watched it and loved it. I didn't record it, but I can watch it On Demand, and plan to tomorrow, especially since as of right now, I have no work project for tomorrow.
-
I skimmed through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Nothing of interest.
-
I watched last night's MAD MEN episode. Wow, those were certainly some interesting developments. Always surprises on this show. It doesn't always go where one expects.
-
Then I watched tonight's HEROES two-hour premiere. They've set the new season in motion with a decent enemy and the heroes spread out all over living separate lives just as in season one. I know they're hoping that by slowly bringing them together to fight their mutual enemy a la Season One that the show can recapture the very large audience it had during the first season. Time will tell if they're able to do that.
As for this episode, some of the stories bored me to tears (Hiro's) while I could have spent the entire show with Peter. I liked Matt's attempts to resist his power, too.
-
What is it, Ish Kabibble?
-
I just read that Fox has given GLEE a full season pick-up. That means 22 episodes now instead of the previously contracted 13.
Great news!
-
Now I guess I'll head downstairs and get ready for bed. I was up very late last night, so I'm eager to get to sleep much earlier tonight.
Good night!
-
The church alarm went off and I am the first contact. It's very dark outside.
When did the cops get to be young enough to be my son?
-
Good Evening!
Well...
I somehow ended up out/up on City Island with a fellow pianist, a vocal coach from the Met and his soprano-wife for dinner a few hours ago. It was a truly unexpected wonderful evening. Good food, cheap beers, lots of laughs and great people!
*And to cap the evening off, we were serenaded by the 77-year old proprietress of the Arthur Avenue Cafe. A truly beautiful voice, and a lovely women. -And she even provided us with shots of something called "del Capo" - a liquer of "29 Calabrian herbs". Salut!

Which means the "Glee" cast will be heading back to L.A. after they get back from their current promotional tour in Australia. -Which also means that Matthew Morrison will not be stepping back into South Pacific for a short stint when Kelli O'Hara starts back. Ah, well.

I, too, have "Flash Forward" set to record on my DVR. Now, as to whether or not I'll make the time to watch it, well...
-
bk - Glad to see you that found AMC's website and the "Mad Men" schedule all by yourself. ;)
-
DR elmore - Sorry to hear about your bus woes earlier. -Is there a reason you don't take the subway more regularly? Yes, the kids take the subway too, but at least you'd get down to Chelsea faster.
*And, remember, with President Obama in town this week for the opening week of the U.N. traffic in midtown is going to be slow-going for the next couple of days due to all the street closures. It's even affecting the business of the food trucks. ;)

DR Dan (the Man) - I did end up making a stop at the Comcast Center Saturday morning to watch "the wall". WOW!!!! I had originally only planned to stay for about five minutes... then about 25 minutes later... Again, WOW!!!
Yep--it's pretty mesmerizing, isn't it?
Yep! And after reading that there are apparently hours upon hours of customized videos, and that the various segments could be programmed in thousands of ways, well... I guess it's a perfect way and place to spend a rainy day in Philadelphia. ;)
-
Has anyone ever tried to watch all three extended versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy in one day?
I saw the original Broadway production of Angels in America, Parts 1 & 2 in the same day. I had trouble focusing by the end.
The Ziegfeld here in NYC - as well as the Uptown in DC - did marathon showings of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and they were sold out. The Ziegfeld also had a "Harry Potter" marathon a few weeks before the last movie came out. Started at 10:00am, ended at 1:00am. Whew!

As DR MATTH wrote - surprised galore on this week's MAD MEN.
I enjoyed BIG BANG tonight - Laurie Metcalf guests!
-
TARZAN THE MAGNIFICENT was directed by Robert Day aka Mr Dorothy Provine.
-
Yes I like Mr Denny Miller's Tarzan as well....but his movie was a Sol Lesser production that lived up to its name. Gordon Scott was lucky enough to have Sy Weintraub at the helm, and to be filmed on location in Africa!
-
Actually, that is trois Jolies.
Oh, well... :)
Well, if it was in Spanish... Almost. Kinda-sorta.
Well I am at the least - bi lingual.

Health and safety vibes to DR DAW and JAYSON.
-
JRand, did you notice that Mr. Rad Fulton remarked on my Facebook page about your remark?
-
Gosh DR Jane, it sounds like the whole of the Rogue Valley is aflame! Hope it gets extinguished soon!
-
I like Gordon Scott best, myself!
-
The music question has been answered successfully.
-
Finished season two of Mad Men - I actually enjoyed all but one episode - I did not like the very long LA episode, otherwise it was a very good season. I'm sure I'll get into season three when I start, but since I know they do this jump ahead in time I'm sure it will take some getting used to.
-
Wonderful Tuesday everyone. 8)
