DR elmore - I hope that school kids let you have a seat on the bus and/or subway.  *If I were you, I'd just ask to have a seat. You might be surprised.  -Or just carry one of your crutches with you and threaten to beat them over the head with it to make them move.  Or just hit them over the head anyway. ;)

As for the Topic of the Day... Hmmm...

First Cassette Player - I think I was eight-years old. It was a Tandy/Radio Shack one.

First Radio – A few months after getting the above cassette player, I purchased - well, my Mom purchased it, but it was still mine! - a Radio/Cassette player, again from Radio Shack.  I no longer had to hold up my cassette player to my parents' radio in order to record my favorite songs from KING (we were living in Seattle at the time).

First TV – To the best of my memory, I don't think I've ever purchased a TV. All the ones I've had have been hand-me-downs.

First Record Player – I never purchased one. I just took over the Panasonic that my Dad had.

First Stereo Rig – Something cobbled together from various components when I was in high school.

First CD player – A Sony 5-Disc changer sometime in 1986. It was on sale at Circuit City, and cost just as much as a single-disc player at the time.

First Laser Disk Player – N/A

Most extravagant purchase – Hmmm, probably the (RED) iPod Nano I bought a few years ago... Then left on a plane.

So far, no UPS deliveries, so I still have a day off. Criterion releases often arrive in the USPS mail instead of via UPS, so I could still get something in today's mail, but it would likely be too late to start on until tomorrow.

I forgot to mention last night that I did indeed go back to the beginning and rewatch the Blu-ray of HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE. If I have the day off, I'll likely do THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS this evening.

How wonderful is it to see these HARRY POTTER movies with the cast basically growing up before our eyes. And except for Richard Harris, all of the cast staying in their roles giving the series such a feeling of unity.

TOD:

First Radio -- As I recall, it was a GE AM/FM portable that also tuned in the TV radio bands from channels 2 thru 13.  I wanted it for the express purpose of patching it to my tape recorder and recording TV shows.

First TV I bought for myself -- a 25" Sony Trinitron in 1989--a wonderful tv with terrific color.  Unfortunately, it only had antenna and coax cable inputs and it gradually became inconvenient to hook up the VCR and video game consoles.

First Record Player I bought for myself -- Never bought one for myself--I still use the component system that was a high school graduation gift from my parents.  It's a Pioneer receiver and a turntable, both were state-of-the-art and both still work fine.

First Cassette Player -- Another Christmas gift during my youth.  GE.  It was square-ish as opposed to the general long-ish designs of the 70's.  I primarily used it to record TV shows.

First CD Player -- A Sony.  My first major purchase made when I got my first real job as a sales clerk at Strawbridge and Clothiers in Philly.  I spotted it when it was on sale--I bought it and brought it home without yet owning any CDs.  I went out that weekend and bought Peter Gabriel's SO.

First answering machine -- A clunky GE machine I bought when I moved into my first apartment.  My roomie and I liked making funny greeting messages on it.  But the tape heads on this thing were low quality and within a year the messages began to sound faded and squeaky.  When it began to chew up the tapes, my roomie literally drop-kicked it across the room and that was the end of that.

As for the rest of the day, I have last night's CASTLE to watch while I eat lunch. I will check out the next Brett/SHERLOCK HOLMES case. I will likely watch MANHUNTER on Blu-ray this afternoon, too. If not that, then something on HD-DVD. So many choices....

As for TOD:

My first TV was an RCA color 19" portable which I bought for my bedroom when I moved back in with my parents after college while I was going to graduate school and working full-time as a teacher. By then, our tastes in TV watching were so different that we couldn't agree on anything to watch, so I watched in my bedroom most nights after I finished my work.
Title: Re: BALANCING ACT
Post by: Matt H. on September 22, 2009, 07:03:38 AM
When I moved to my first apartment, I bought a combination stereo record player/cassette player/radio with two speakers. I left my stereo record player at home for my parents to use.

Of course, a VCR was a major purchase back then since they were so new. I think I paid $900 for my first one which was a major chunk of change. I was barely making that much per month teaching. Fortunately, I had a second job reviewing movies for a local newspaper syndicate, and I had income from stock dividends which allowed to to have such an extravagance.

In other news...

It's been quite "fun" reading the reviews of the new production of Tosca that opened at The Metropolitan Opera last night...

Here's the slug from the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/23/arts/music/23tosca.html?ref=music):

"The Swiss-born director Luc Bondy was showered with boos during his final bows as the Met opened its season on Monday night with a new production of Puccini’s “Tosca.”"

And Howard Kissel in the New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/culture/2009/09/a-new-tosca.html) calls it "unspeakable".

I saw him and his partner play many, many times during my youth. My aunt dearly loved them, had many of their albums, and when my uncle didn't want to se them yet again, I'd be selected to go. Of course, I enjoyed them very much, too, so I always looked forward to seeing them again.

She also had the same kind of crush on Leonard Bernstein (join the club), and we went to see him every time he came to town, too.

bk, does you DishTV/DirectTV (I forget which you have) offer the AMC-HD channel?

As you know watching the Blu-rays, the HD versions are SO much more enjoyable. I watched the first season in SD and then got to review the first season on Blu-ray where my eyes were open to how lush and beautiful it looked. I could NEVER go back to SD now with the show.

It comes as no surprise to anyone here since I talk about it all the time, but I really am spoiled about watching shows in high definition now. Anything else, especially on standard def TV, looks subpar. DVDs are somewhat different since a good Blu-ray player can upconvert a well made DVD to near-HD appearance (those Holmes stories I'm watching now look fantastic upconverted). But it PAINS me to see PROJECT RUNWAY every week since there's no Lifetime-HD on my cable service (we do have LIFETIME MOVIES-HD, but that's a different animal entirely.)

First tv I bought myself - a Panasonic 19" color portable!  Worked for many years.  It had a great picture and was very easy to tune.  Antenna of course.

First record player - was a nice one, don't remember the brand.  One piece stereo with a drop down turntable in the center.....coral and black.  It was an automatic turntable that allowed me to play several records and once which was wonderful.

Tape Recorder - a small reel to reel that ran on batteries.  I also recorded television shows to listen to later.....

DR Cillaliz i'm curious what you thought of the premiere of DWTS.

I thought it was really good.

And i loved watching the relay dancing (is that what they called it when they all do the same style one after the other). That really let you compare the dancers.

I have to say i think there are 3 who are in the bottom for the men: Ashley hamilton, tom delay, and chuck liddell. I think that tom will be safe cause his partner (cheryl) is very popular.

My favorites were aaron carter (i also love karina). And mark (from iron chef). I also love his partner lacey.

I thought donny osmond was amazing, although did not vote for him. He is for sure gonna be top 4. But i was surprised how much i liked him.

And one person i was not expecting to like. But i thought he was the cutest thing ever. The snowboarder, Louie (with chelsie). His freestyle (2nd routine) was so good. I love these two!

Michael irvin was worse than i thought he would be ( i assumed like all football players he would make it till the end). But i just didn't find him very appealing.  But great opening show. Can't wait for the women tonight!

My first electronics purchases (not things given to me, but things I actually bought) were so long ago...

I know I bought a stereo record player with attached speakers, plus an 8-track cassette player, in the early 1970s while I was stationed in Jacksonville FL.

But...the first serious purchases I ever made were made in the stereo shop of the Army exchange (PX) in Vicenza Italy in 1973.  It was there that I bought a Pioneer SX626 receiver and a Pioneer PL50A turntable (see!  I can remember model numbers!!!).  I also bought a pair of Coral speakers.  Never heard of them at the time and haven't seen any since, but they were splendid speakers (250 watts per speaker, IIRC).  The speakers were stolen some 15 years later when I was in Naples Italy, but I still have the receiver and turntable.

My first laserdisc player was a Pioneer model.  My first VHS was an RCA SelectaVision model...cost me nearly a thousand dollars at the time (1983-ish or '84-ish).  It was wonderful, too.  The slow motion feature was the best I've ever seen.

Of course, I invested in the RCA SelectaVision CED player, too.  Ah, me.  CED discs were amazing and had a better success rate, upon their introduction, of playability than did laserdiscs (which were prohibitively expenseive).  When "Star Wars" was issued on home video for the first time, it cost only $24.95 on CED disc.  The laser was nearly four times that amount.

Why it never caught on I'll never know.

The very first "new" (not used) TV that "I" bought for myself (my parents had bought me a new set one Christmas -- a GE model -- in 1979 or 1980) was a Sony 17-inch Trinitron that I purchased when I reitred from the Navy and was settling in here in Oakland.  I still have that set, by the way, and it's now in my bedroom since it was supplanted in my living room a couple of years back by my Panasonic 37-inch plasma HDTV.

My first CD player was a portable I bought in 1984 when I was first assigned to USS Carl Vinson here in the Bay Area.  I forget the make...it was a popular brand.  There were so few CDs to choose from (that suited my tastes) that it took me nearly a year to accumulate 10.   During a port visit in Honolulu, I went to a Sharper Image store and bought a pair of Bose Roommate speakers to complement my CD player (for those rare occasions when I could plug them in and play my music loudly...usually during a weekend stay in a motel on the island of Alameda).

My first CD player was some off brand that also have a turntable, cassette player/recorder, and radio tuner.  It played ONE cd.....it lasted about one year.....and I only had one CD in that time.....a classical CD that I had purchased for $1.  I thought cd's were not going to last and continued to buy LP's - until CD's were moved to the front of the store and LP's relegated to ONE bin in the back.

By then I had to get a new CD player, because the turntable in the system had ceased to function.

TOD:

The first TV I bought myself was a 20 inch Toshiba, purchased in 1986 from the Bi-Mart that I worked at during our annual employee shopping night (which was always the week before Christmas). It was the last of the tvs to not have a remote control (I couldn't afford one with a remote). I had that tv up until I bought my Toshiba 42 inch LCD a couple of years back.

The other items on my list I haven't a clue about...I know my first answering machine was white with blue buttons and I had it for about 10 years or so.

TOD - Sometime around 1966 or 1967, I saved up my babysitting money to buy an RCA Victor portable stereo record player with detachable speakers.  It was my first major purchase and I was very proud of it.  That unit saw me through high school, college, grad school, and the first year or so of my "Mary Tyler Moore" life.  I gave that player to a teacher friend for use in her classroom and replaced it with a Sony modular unit that also had an AM/FM radio.  I'm still using the speakers from that system with the combo record player/cassette player/CD player/radio that Richard gave me for Christmas several years ago.

My first tape recorder was a Panasonic portable cassette player/recorder that I bought for the voice lessons that a mutual friend of mine and DR Elmore's recommended in 1975.  I recently gave that to the AAUW garage sale.

We didn't have a CD player until Richard gave me a Sony "boom box" for Christmas in the 1990s that I still use here in my haven.  I know we didn't have a CD player when DR Elmore came to visit and brought copies of his then-new Showboat recording as a gift.  He'd brought both CDs and cassettes and we have the cassettes.

I bought my first TV - a small Sony B & W portable - in the mid-1970s and must have given it to the garage sale, too.  We looked around for it when Richard and Rob were taking stuff Saturday to the electronics recycling place and couldn't find it.

I went to Tommy Tune's show STEPS IN TIME last night, at the Gerald Lynch theater at John Jay College.  I wasn't sure what to expect -- I hadn't seen Tommy Tune perform in years.  I must say it was simply fabulous.  He looked, sounded, danced, all at top form.  He is one of the most charming and charismatic people to watch.  This was a one night only benefit performance, and it was not well advertised.  Very unfortunate, because the room should have been packed to the gills.  It wasn't, but it was nonetheless a very enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.  He was given a spontaneous standing ovation at one point in the middle of the show, -- very well-deserved, and he seemed genuinely moved by the moment.  I hope he is able to perform this show on a more regular basis in NY.  He's also been touring the show a bit.  If the opportunity to see him arises, I highly recommend it.

I plan on watching the new series FLASH FORWARD. Although it's on the same time as SURVIVOR. So i'll record it.

I don't think anybody here has seen it yet. But it's supposed to be one of the must see new shows. It sounds interesting.

The last time I looked, the entire pilot was available for viewing on iTunes for free.

Nope--never mind.  I either read it wrong or they yanked it. :-/

Mawnin', m'dears!

So, today is the last day of this glorious summer up here in the woods. It will be in the 80's - gasp!! Just for me!! Last minute tasks to ready the house for 7 months without me. I saw a deer this morning, when I went out to feed the jays - only the 2nd time this summer... only the 2nd time in the 9 years I've been here... magical last day in the forest.

Then, pack the car. Oy... tomorrow, head down to Jane and Keith's - it will be swell to hang with them and the pupster - who by now is a big boy!

TOD - my first cassette player/recorder ... 1972, as I was leaving for Noo Yawk and Juilliard, my singing teacher - Miss Long, may she rest in peace - gave me a brand new Sony. I kept it, and USED it, until last year, when I finally got rid of it. How I appreciated that gift, through the years.

Don't remember much about the other stuff... I'm tech-challenged, so the new toys are always quite alarming, and I'm resistant to having/using them. Even my new cell fone - I ONLY use it to make and receive phone calls. I can barely manage to read a text message, and I certainly can't figure out how to send one... oy...

The East Side is indeed a mess because of the United Nations and terrorist fears. Nothing can go down Lexington Avenue but selected vehicles from 59th Street to 48th Street. Given the horrible traffic, the bus took only 30 minutes between 79th and 55th, so I wasn't unhappy at all. The jammed traffic was awful and I watched an ambulance with a blaring siren have a helluva time getting through it all.

On the way back, I stopped at a lumber store and bought two sheets of playwood, which are being cut to my specifications as I type this. I will stop back tomorrow morning to pick them up.

OGIVE me a home

Where the deer and the antelope play.

Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

I have a version of this somewhere that is very much like Jonathan and Darlene's style. DR Kerry has heard it.

I was just hearing that very version in my mind.   May God help us all!

Nope. The city busses and subways act as the "school bus" for many of the school children in NYC, so it's kind of a daily occurence - well, whenever DR elmore happens to take the bus during pre- and post- school hours.  However, as we both agree, it never hurts to ask. ;)

MBarnum were any of your family near the East Medford fire?

The speed at which these fires were under control is truly impressive.  We have barely had any rain this summer, combined with the high temps and high winds the Ashland fire spread with incredible speed.  So far it is holding at 153 acres and the Medford fire at 600 acres.

Donny Osmond? You must vote for Donny Osmond. Do it for me. Please.

Well you can only vote during the show and 30 minutes afterwards (which was yesterday).

Although i'm pretty sure he won't need my votes.

They limit your votes though. Although donny will have the same number every week (so you could vote yourself). Or you can vote online.

Here's some awful news (kind of). I did get a new review DVD set in the mail today (very late 3:30, so I didn't even attempt to start on it). It's Criterion's next Eclipse box set: Dusan Makavejev Free Radical.

Now, here's what's awful. This is the same director that helmed that most disgusting, repugnant movie I've ever watched: SWEET MOVIE. True, these movies were made before he threw everything into his movies but the kitchen sink, but I'm still wary about what weird stuff he decides to focus on in these three films. At least being Eclipse releases, there won't be any bonus features. It'll be the three movies and that's all.

I'll start on them tomorrow.

I went to HD On Demand and pulled up last night's CSI: MIAMI. I don't watch the show any more on a regular basis, but since this episode went back in time 15 years, I thought it'd be interesting seeing how they pulled it off. They had to do a lot of CGI around David Caruso's eyes to erase the years especially since he wasn't wearing sunglasses back then (one of the BIG points made in the episode). Using rather primitive forensics, Horatio is able to solve the case and start up his own crime unit. Kind of a fun episode.

I spent the majority of the afternoon watching MANHUNTER on Blu-ray. Not the greatest looking transfer (the DVD was always soft, so this is better than that), and it's filled with Michael Mann's MIAMI VICE vibe of the 1980s with all the synthesized music and slow mo.

I never saw the remake RED DRAGON though many people have said this is superior to the remake.

William Petersen was still sex on a stick back then.

The fire was stopped before it crossed the road the photo was taken from.  There were fire fighters from multiple fire departments, 4 or 5 helicopters dropping water from our lake, and air tankers dropping fire retardant.

Keith heard on the news the planes were scheduled to leave the area tomorrow as we are near the end of our fire season.  It chokes me up just thinking of the consequences of this fire had it begun after they left.

While on the cross trainer at the gym Keith had a view of the planes dropping the red/orange retardant & the helicopters dropping water into the smoke.  No wonder he called to check on me.  As I left the trails a tanker, not dropping retardant, flew over my head & then back to towards the smoke.  That plane appeared to be all white.

Keith said he seemed to be the only person at the gym paying attention to the fire.  By the time we both came home there were people stopped all along the roads watching.

Not so far as I know. Both Dan and Allen live in the suburbs, with no forest areas around, so I don't think the fires would get too close to them.

Thanks DR Kerry.  I walked our road today instead of going to the trails.  Keith was out and said I probably could have gone.  He saw helicopters circling the area keeping watch.

Correct. He also played Jack Armstrong in a serial. He did tons of movie and tv.

Thanks, DR Jane.  Jayson's temp broke this morning, and staff advised us to go ahead with the procedure, as the next opening would require waiting over a month.

The test found a hernia in his throat.  In addition, they took a biopsy, for which we'll have to wait on the results.  Otherwise, he appears to be comfortable.  Thanks for asking.

I think I may finally be through doing things on this "light" day.  I did do a two-mile jog - I was going to do four but it was way too hot and would have been stupid to try that.  Then I went and had some bacon and eggs, then shipped packages, then did some errands, then wrote a first draft of the liner notes, and did all the other package information.  I'll try to finish all that by tonight and get it to the designer.  So, maybe we'll announce on Friday.

The BIG Do for the press is tomorrow at noon but I was very happy watching the rehearsal of several numbers from the show. I'm getting excited, I gotta say, about this production and I hope it's a huge success. I had a nice talk with my old friend Kevin Ligon, who plays either Shears or Robust, I forget which, and is standing by for Senator Billboard Rawkins, and got a big hug and kiss from Terri White, whom I've known since she was the original Joyce Heth, the World's oldest Woman, in the Broadway cast of BARNUM.  I had several friends in the cast and one of my best freinds from college was Glen Close's dresser on the show.

Tomorrow, the lumber store first thing and then a trip to the Finians on Broadway office to finish off some paperwork and submit an invoice.

Meaning they will not be offered or that there will likely be no takers?

Speaking from no experience I would think a blind cat would be good pet - probably content to cuddle up for the attention. Finding the food, water, and liter box by smell should work.

DR Jose - I think it's part of the "new normal," and it will take a while to get used to it.  Last month when we were going through John's illness and death, I tried to be very careful not to post things before his daughters did.  I pretty much let them take the lead.  On the upside, my posting the obit allowed a friend to see it, who told his son, who told his mother, who is a second cousin of Richard's with whom we'd lost touch.  We've now heard from her and have her address.

I liked NCIS LOS ANGELES.  All of the cast are very good, although the girl is the weak link.  It's definitely set up on the NICS template.....but it was pretty to look at with lots of location shots in LA.

And Linda Hunt, LL Cool J, and Chris O'Donnell all did some good work.  I think they will make a good team.  The supporting cast - with the one exception - plays well.  So we shall see.  Seven people were killed in tonight's episode....that's a lot of violence in one hour.

DR GINNY's comments really echo how I feel, I think.  It's how it is now.

It is certainly nice to have information here and now - and it is easier to let people know without the pain of repeating the news in several phone calls.....and having funeral and service information available on line can be necessary when the loved one isn't from the area.....

DR Cillaliz i'm curious what you thought of the premiere of DWTS....

I thought donny osmond was amazing, although did not vote for him. He is for sure gonna be top 4. But i was surprised how much i liked him.

Donny Osmond? You must vote for Donny Osmond. Do it for me. Please.

DR Laura, i forgot to tell you Donny Osmond is on Dancing with the stars...

Are you having a rack built for Mr. Barnum's next visit?

I am not liking the new girl on NCIS....and I am hoping this is temporary.

I've seen the show, but I could have answered this even before I saw it. There is no way ON EARTH that CBS would tamper with what turned out to be their highest rated show last season. By the end of the summer, NCIS had supplanted CSI as the number one show on CBS.

I began my evening by watching today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Fish and Kyle were on and had a sweet conversation. The beginning of what's obviously going to become a love triangle. Can't wait to see this on daytime TV.

I loved the original production of BARNUM.

Me too! The only show I ever saw that I felt I had my money's worth before Act 1 started.

I was a stage hand when the touring show was in Iowa City (Student stage hands got union wage when a touriing show came to town)  It was scary watching the first perfornance and knowing I was the one who tightened the bolt on the tight rope.

Then, to kill some time before I began NCIS, I put in the 2004 Tony Awards DVD. Hugh Jackman hosted this year (the year he won the Tony for THE BOY FROM OZ), and I enjoyed all of his singing, dancing, and clowning (with Rod from AVENUE Q). I left it in the player because I'll continue watching it tomorrow if I have time before I start cooking lunch.

I thought NCIS was a bit of a mess tonight. Three storylines running simultaneously with the search for Ziva/Tony's torture and interrogation, the search for Ziva's replacement, and the crime story with the dead sailor. It all dovetailed OK into the wrap-up for the episode, but it served only as a season starter for me, not a great episode of the show.

NCIS: LA was an OK crime drama. I guessed pretty easily who was behind the kidnapping, but the cast is attractive (the show seems a little overloaded with cast members, I thought) though I did like all three guys in the MTAC room. Chris and LL had an easy camaraderie, too, which will help make the series work. Overall, a fine premiere episode.

DR Jose,
The Facebook thing is very difficult to balance.  I understand not wanting bad news out so freely, but it was a god send when my nephew was having his heart surgery, both for those of us following the progress of the surgery and for Jon who was in the waiting room and was able to have the support of those of us who couldn't be there
Title: Re: BALANCING ACT

I think the issue is more how many friends you have.  I have one friend who has one Facebook account with a lot of friends and another limited to close people who you would share that sort of news with.

Gretchen and Steve used Caringbridge.com.  I'm not sure if it's just for cancer patients, but the people I know who have used it were.  It's a blog with a guestbook etc.  You can subscribe for updates. That was where they announced the news about Steve.  It does allow posting once and notifying friends and relatives all at once

Some of the bookshelves need support because of the weight of the books.

I am getting ahead of the game and asking my ASK BRUCE question today...why is that on the KRITZERLAND.COM site, under "shop by catagory" it does not list "Books"?

It was too late to add a "books" category to the menu bar without completely redesigning it, which I didn't want to do.   So, it's under "Fun" - but at some point we'll figure out a better way.

The others will become live at some point - a page has to be done for each of them and we haven't had time to do them yet.  So, for now if you want any of the other books, just drop me a line.

And yes, you can order paperbacks of both Murder At The Grove and the latest.  It's 14.98 per book, plus 4.95 for shipping (can do two books for that one shipping price).  But you have to order directly via paypal, just like pre-ordering a CD.
