Well, you've read the notes, the notes were too marvelous for words and yet contained words, and now it is time for you to post until the too MOOvelous cows come home.

Have an easy fast, for those observing.

Rain has come to Manhattan.

Today is the Annual Broadway Cares Flea Market, usually held outdoors on 44th Street and in Shubert Alley.

Since rain has been in the forecast for most of the week and it's supposed to rain most of the day they decided to move the FM indoors to Roseland.

I will try to be positive about this.

In recent years the FM has become a mob scene outdoors. I can only imagine what it will be like indoors. Many of the attendees are just creepy people who have absolutely no interest in theatre or the FM, they just want to buy things and put them up on E-bay. It's difficult to move around and I only go year after year because I have friends involved and it's an important event. When it's outdoors people arrive early before things are actually set up causing headaches for the people at the various tables because if you're "already there" who cares if it's not 10am (the official starting) time, sell it to me now!!! Instant gratification with no regard to other people or issues.

We shall see how this all works out.

What's the line about instant gratification (Milla used it on her CD, maybe she knows the source, if any) -

"instant gratification takes too long"

DR Jane (and others) re: the comments last night about why don't i splurge and buy my favorite author's book.

Well ideally obviously I would. But I read a lot and get all my books from the library. In the case of the book she is signing it is book 13 (or something like that) in a series (i have read them all but don't own the others).

In this economy, even though i love to read. i'm fine with being able to read all the books i want (just having to return them to the library when i'm done).

That's too bad about the broadway flea market. I wish i could be there. I love that flea market!

It is also raining heavily here.

And for the first time all summer i have to exercise inside. It is supposed to rain hard all day. and with fasting tomorrow i won't be able to exercise at all tomorrow.

I have an indoor bike. Although i never use it cause the seat isn't that comfortable. And i have a rebounder (mini-trampoline).

Good morning!

We had rain off and on for most of the night, and it was still misty when I went out for my walk this morning. Glad I was able to get it finished without getting wet, and the coolness does great things for my spirits. It IS, however, going into the low 80s this afternoon, so we're not out of the woods yet in terms of heat.

I guess I will work on MONSOON WEDDING as my work project today. I'm expecting so many review items to arrive in the mail next week that I will go ahead and get this one out of the way even though it doesn't come out until the 20th of October.

It's a two disc set (the second disc is a bunch of short films made by the director), so I'm expecting to work on the first disc this afternoon and the second disc in the evening.

I don't know, Fred.  I don't think so.  I'm really not a fan of crowds and crowded spaces.  And while I like it in concept, I realize that I don't actually want to buy anything that I will then need to find a place to store for the rest of my life.  How's that for a lousy attitude?

So, yesterday I went to see an Off Broadway show called The Night Watcher, which was very good.

But there was a man in the audience who I don't think took a shower for two or three weeks.  He smelled so badly that all of the patrons seated around him needed to be re-seated by the House Manager.   The man ended up sitting in the front row by himself, with everyone else needing to be moved back to whatever random seat happened to be open.  Should not the theater have asked the very smelly man to leave, instead?

Good morning, all! Greetings from Toyland. I overslept this morning and I needed to be at Toyland by 10 am, so I got up at 8:30, read yesterday's posts, and got myself down here as quickly as possible. I've had my meds, my breakfast, downloaded the unreleased BABES IN TOYLAND into my office computer,  and I'm ready to get to work on OH, BOY!, which is a bit of a nightmare.

Speaking of nightmares, last night I had dreams of being back at The Drama Book Shop and being cast in Harold Prince's production of CANDIDE, which was 1972 and I didn't begin working at the book shop until July 1979. God knows where all that originated. I cannot blame the vicodin any longer.

I'll be here until around 2 or 3 today. After that, I'll probably watch the last half of the 2nd ghost story on the Netflix disc. I have to say that none of these stories on SHADES OF DARKNESS is particularly alarming; I want to see PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and be terrified.

I understand why you use the library instead of purchasing, in fact I'm using the library more and more these days.  I just think it would be nice for you to have an autographed copy since she is your favorite author.  It might be too late to find one at a used book store, still I would call a few a check if you have them nearby.

13 year old girls might be.

I agree if he returns to this country he should be arrested, he broke the law & shouldn't get a break because of who he is.  I am shocked that after all this time we requested he be arrested by a different government, and that they obliged.  Even the woman who was the 13 year old girl has requested this be dropped.

I am watching BEACH PARTY right now - again.  TCM has a nice print of it, and Dorothy Malone is so lovely....the songs are okay....but Bob Cummings????  His transformation from stuffy professor - when he shaves his beard and everyone is acting how much younger he looks...and so handsome....  Well, it was about the same when he played his own grandfather on his tv show.  Looks about the same...old!

In lieu of watching FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER I instead watched THIS REBEL BREED starring Mark Damon, Kenny Miller and Rita Moreno. Pretty good filim, for what it was, dealing with ethnic strife in high school. Lots of location shooting in LA around 3rd St. I am guessing that is not so nice an area as some of it looked a bit run down and the building were all quite old, older then what I am used to seeing in the Hollywood area.

Also found a new favorite actor, Don Eitner. He is now an artist and has his own website.

The Flea Market was what I expected, too many people and Roseland is dark and dank! I have never been before. I hope they don't decided to move it there permanently. There is no expectation that they will but anything can happen.

I got a nice bag full of Little Mermaid stuff for my niece for Christmas and I saw some friends. I left about 40 minutes after arriving though because it was just too crowded.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And it's been a good day so far. I think last night was one of those rare nights where I'm pretty sure I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.  I opened my eyes around 10:00 this morning, checked things out on the interwebs via my iPhone, then listened to "Wait, Wait.. Don't Tell Me" at 11:00 on WNYC... Then I got out of bed.  Aahhh... :)

DR Ben - Isn't Roseland bigger than Shubert Alley? Alas, Roseland is not set up for "good lighting".

I've always just wondered why BC/EFA doesn't work out some sort of deal with the Marriott Marquis and move some of their Shubert Alley-based events to one of the ballrooms there.  Things would be ever so much roomier - hopefully.

I don't mind crowds, however, what I do mind is fire hazards, and whenever I slog through the crowds in Shubert Alley during the Broadway Flea Market or Broadway Barks, well... I really am sort of amazed that no one has been seriously injured over the past couple of years during those events.

They keep showing clips from the original Broadway run of Sweeney Todd, but I don't think that's Mr. Cariou nor Ms. Lansbury in those clips. But, still... OH! Those clips!

So...

For reasons unknown, I'm watching the Matthew Broderick "Music Man" on Ovation.  It was bad the first time I saw it, and it's even worse now.  It's just like cheese: some improve with age, while others just rot.

That's the problem with remaking a classic.

I absolutely cannot stand that Matthew Broderick/MUSIC MAN. I knew he was miscast when it was first announced, but I watched it hoping I might be wrong. I wasn't. He was about as terrible as any star I've ever seen in a leading role. As for Kristin Chenoweth, her costumes dominated her. She's so tiny, and those period designs just seemed to overwhelm her.

Hmmm... That's quite a trek any time of the day. 10th Ave. is OK, but 11th Ave. is practically New Jersey. ;)  There's also really nothing around there except for some car dealerships and the West Side Highway.

So, I fixed lunch and watched Friday night's MONK while I ate. An OK episode, but I guessed the killer easily. Very difficult for writers to pull off plots based around the murder premise of Agatha Christie's ABC MURDERS.

I then started on my work project for the day, MONSOON WEDDING.

It's an ambitious comedy-drama that tries to juggle maybe one too many stories within its confines. Certainly was intrigued by some of the stories, however, and it pulls you in as it runs.

They should have!  In the words of Mr. Spock, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...or the one."

I understand why you use the library instead of purchasing, in fact I'm using the library more and more these days.  I just think it would be nice for you to have an autographed copy since she is your favorite author.  It might be too late to find one at a used book store, still I would call a few a check if you have them nearby.

Apparently she is only signing the newest book which just came out this week. And you have to have bought at the chain the signing is being held at.

And I did get to watch both MEDIUM and GHOST WHISPERER. I think i liked the first more. i'm still getting used to the new set-up on GW.

I WAS going to watch these today, but my sister called yesterday, asking if I knew about the family coming to her house today at about 3:00.  I said that I didn't know about coming over to her house today at about 3:00.  Then she said that a local pizzeria has a vegan pizza and they wanted to try it.  I said that that sounded familiar, so maybe she (or her daughter) did tell me about it and I forgot (not unusual).  Anyway, it didn't hit me until this morning that the reason that she was having everyone over to her house today at about 3:00 is that TODAY IS HER BIRTHDAY!  How could I forget?? :o

Fortunately, I bought her a present back in April...the complete TV series of Beauty and the Beast (http://www.amazon.com/Beauty-Beast-Complete-Linda-Hamilton/dp/B001AZIRZO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1254084045&sr=1-2) with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman.  It was on sale AND it cost less than what it's available for now!  So, all is well. :)

There's something really wrong with the world ... dear world?!

There's a petition somewhere here in France; I need to find it! Thank G*d my governement is doing something to help the man!

I have never been to hear an author speak where there weren’t plenty of books to be purchased.  I suggest taking enough cash with you, just in case you do want to buy the book for an autograph.  You might feel differently once you are there.    Also I suggest allowing plenty of time to wait in line for the autograph.

Today is Shaun Cassidy's birthday!

Happy Birthday to Shaun Cassidy!  My sister had a crush on him when she was much, much younger. ;)

It must have been fun for her to share his birthday.  Funny you remembered his birthday. ;)

Thank God. The world is so much safer now that Roman Polanski is in custody.

I was amazed at the number of news updates on this story in my Twitter feed this morning. If he wasn't a "celebrity", would there have been this much fuss after all of these years?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was being facetious.

I got that, just not sure what your view point was ;)

I think if Polanski hadn't requested a return to the States recently, reminding folks he is a wanted person, he might not have been arrested.

It is possible the news hasn't reported positive comments from Polanski on the event.  All I've ever read was his opinion he did nothing wrong & never regretted the harm he caused the young girl & seemed rather arrogant about the whole thing.  This could be why officials felt it was important to ask the Swiss government to arrest him.

Still, I hope the Swiss don't extradite him, what a waste of money after all these years.  I do believe the press will be thrilled.

I know how cliché it is to say that we live in a weird world ... BUT ... come on, Roman Polanski has been arrested and may be deported after something that happened in 1977 and ... George Bush -amongst others!!! - can roam the world free??!!!

There's something really wrong with the world ... dear world?!

There's a petition somewhere here in France; I need to find it! Thank G*d my governement is doing something to help the man!

I can only think of one word right now ; SHAME!

And yes, Mr Polanski would happen to be unknown, he would not be put through that of course!

Human justice?? Ah! Yes, it's "human" hence FAULTY!

So, apparently if you elude capture for 30 years, then the crime no longer happened?

Mr Polanski has done some jail time for this case!

The lady concerned has forgiven him and a money settlement was done years ago!

She is ALIVE! He did not kill her.

His name was again in the news lately because he wants to go to the States!

Give the man a break!

If all the guys who've slept with underage teens were in jails ....

That was in 1977.

It's the Los Angeles police which asked The Swiss to arrest him.

I think we can be a little sensible in this instance, no?

My position on this Polanski nonsense is well-known - he did something that was against the law, he'd struck a deal, done his time, and that idiotic insane publicity seeking judge tried to renege.  Enough is enough and the LA police should be ashamed of themselves as should the Swiss policiers who arrested him.   James Barbour did the same thing, struck a deal, served his time and he's done - no judge tried to renege on his deal (which I don't believe could happen today), and there were so many people with so many agendas back then, that even if he were brought back to stand trial it would, in all probability, be thrown out of court, based on the way the case was both mishandled and manhandled.

Judge the Movie, Not the Man
Roman Polanski's 25-year-old crimes should not damage his chances for an Oscar, his victim says.
By Samantha Geimer

I met Roman Polanski in 1977, when I was 13 years old. I was in ninth grade that year, when he told my mother that he wanted to shoot pictures of me for a French magazine. That's what he said, but instead, after shooting pictures of me at Jack Nicholson's house on Mulholland Drive, he did something quite different. He gave me champagne and a piece of a Quaalude. And then he took advantage of me.

It was not consensual sex by any means. I said no, repeatedly, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. I was alone and I didn't know what to do. It was scary and, looking back, very creepy. Those may sound like kindergarten words, but that's the way it feels to me. It was a very long time ago, and it is hard to remember exactly the way everything happened. But I've had to repeat the story so many times, I know it by heart.

We pressed charges, and he pleaded guilty. A plea bargain was agreed to by his lawyer, my lawyer and the district attorney, and it was approved by the judge. But to our amazement, at the last minute the judge went back on his word and refused to honor the deal.

Worried that he was going to have to spend 50 years in prison -- rather than just time already served -- Mr. Polanski fled the country. He's never been back, and I haven't seen him or spoken to him since.

Looking back, there can be no question that he did something awful. It was a terrible thing to do to a young girl. But it was also 25 years ago -- 26 years next month. And, honestly, the publicity surrounding it was so traumatic that what he did to me seemed to pale in comparison.

Now that he's been nominated for an Academy Award, it's all being reopened. I'm being asked: Should he be given the award? Should he be rewarded for his behavior? Should he be allowed back into the United States after fleeing 25 years ago?

Here's the way I feel about it: I don't really have any hard feelings toward him, or any sympathy, either. He is a stranger to me.

But I believe that Mr. Polanski and his film should be honored according to the quality of the work. What he does for a living and how good he is at it have nothing to do with me or what he did to me. I don't think it would be fair to take past events into consideration. I think that the academy members should vote for the movies they feel deserve it. Not for people they feel are popular.

And should he come back? I have to imagine he would rather not be a fugitive and be able to travel freely. Personally, I would like to see that happen. He never should have been put in the position that led him to flee. He should have received a sentence of time served 25 years ago, just as we all agreed. At that time, my lawyer, Lawrence Silver, wrote to the judge that the plea agreement should be accepted and that that guilty plea would be sufficient contrition to satisfy us. I have not changed my mind.

I know there is a price to pay for running. But who wouldn't think about running when facing a 50-year sentence from a judge who was clearly more interested in his own reputation than a fair judgment or even the well-being of the victim?

If he could resolve his problems, I'd be happy. I hope that would mean I'd never have to talk about this again. Sometimes I feel like we both got a life sentence.

My attitude surprises many people. That's because they didn't go through it all; they don't know everything that I know. People don't understand that the judge went back on his word. They don't know how unfairly we were all treated by the press. Talk about feeling violated! The media made that year a living hell, and I've been trying to put it behind me ever since.

Today, I am very happy with my life. I have three sons and a husband. I live in a beautiful place and I enjoy my work. What more could I ask for? No one needs to worry about me.

The one thing that bothers me is that what happened to me in 1977 continues to happen to girls every day, yet people are interested in me because Mr. Polanski is a celebrity. That just never seems right to me. It makes me feel guilty that this attention is directed at me, when there are certainly others out there who could really use it.

I think the young lady abused by Polanski is a very special person.

I believe if forced back here he will not be convicted, likely not even go to trial, and he will have the freedom to come and go as he pleases again.

I think it is ridiculous the Swiss arrested him.

I will not call what he did acceptable, no matter how much time has passed.  I know too many women very scarred by sexual abuse as children.  Just because they learn to handle it & cope with it as adults doesn't mean they aren't deeply hurt from the experience.  I don't believe anyone ever gets over being raped.

I'm in the same court as BK on the Roman Polanski debacle.
Vanity Fair did an interview with the victim, who forgave Polanski his actions.
There was a recent HBO documentary which was quite un-biased, more of a just the facts on both sides piece which showed (to me, at least) that the judge in the case was out for publicity, and a possible higher political status.
Polanski did his time.
The victim is no longer playing "The Victim."
What other punishment does Polanski need?

Just watched episode one of season three's Mad Men.  Didn't like the opening, loved Bryan Batt and that business, hate the Brits in the office, and found some of the writing very weak - and after being thrown out of his house and having to be contrite and finally being allowed back in and with wife pregnant, I continue to think Mr. Draper is one of the most repellent characters in all of television - he had to cheat on her again - unbelievable.

On my fourth of the Mad Men episodes - so far, I'm thinking I like season two the best - this one, while having some good scenes, hasn't really clicked with me so far, and I really got a little irritated with the marijuana scene, although I do love Elizabeth Moss.  I want to just shoot the father character (January Jones' father), and many of the characters continue to be totally repellent.  I want more Bryan Batt.

DR Matt H, I just saw a commercial fro the forthcoming release of Disney's SNOW WHITE; do you have any idea what the differences are between this and the 1997 Platinum Edition?

I am assuming this is a brand new transfer, but I have't gotten my copy nor have I been reading the publicity releases.

I rewatched SNOW WHITE on DVD four or five months ago (it was before I came down with my affliction), and it looked lovely to me. If you're satisfied with it, I wouldn't think of upgrading the DVD to the new version.

Now, the upgrade to Blu-ray will be a different matter all together. All of the previous Disney animated features have been MAJOR upgrades from DVD to Blu-ray, and I'd be surprised if SNOW WHITE is any less revelatory.

But if you're not into high def, I think I'd save my money.

I spent a large part of the evening watching the six short films by Mira Nair which were on the second disc in the MONSOON WEDDING set. They ranged in length from 9 minutes to 59 minutes. All were interesting, and an HIV in India short ("Migration") and a poignant tale of 9/11 were my two favorites of those six on the second disc.

Next, I watched the Kevin Spirtas DVD NIGHT AND DAYS. I hadn't watched it in a while, so I had the time tonight before I began prime time TV, and enjoyed seeing it again.

Then I watched tonight's season premiere of DEXTER. Liked it all except the ending of the episode which I could see coming from a mile away. SHould be interesting to see where this all leads. Deb and Lundy will also be interesting to watch.

I had planned on dropping DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES this year, but I had read several critics who had already seen the season premiere and raved about it so I did have the DVR record tonight's show which I'll watch at some point tomorrow (I guess). If I don't like where Marc Cherry is heading with the new season, I will drop it and save myself 45 minutes more of viewing time each week.

Finished episode four, and for me they pretty much got everything right with this one.  And, interestingly, the best thing in the episode was Bryan Batt's absolutely brilliant performance of how the opening of the Bye Bye Birdie commercial for diet soda is going to be done, which he performs for his wife.  Her reaction to it should have won her an Emmy - for that alone, and Mr. Batt should also have won one for that alone.  But the whole episode was excellent, and I'm so happy the dad is gone.

What a busy weekend

My best friend (since we were 14) came in from Michigan this weekend for her nephews wedding

the first thing she and I had done together once we went was to go to the is same nephew's baptism

At the last moment her husband was unable to come along for the wedding so she asked me to come as her guest

We had a fantastic time.

this morning my friend was supposed to meet me at church - as we were getting ready to head out she called to let me know that she was stuck on the highway with a flat tire - inthe puring rain

Fortunately I have a AAA gold membership so I drove out ther and had AAA coam and change the flat for us - then I followed her to the tire store so she could get her tire repaired.  Teh tire store was not yet open  - but the IHOP right next door was - so we had a lovely breakfast together and thenshe went off to have her tire repaired and the Vixter and I went to the 2nd service at church

after church we drove ito NYC to see Hamlet with Jude Law.

Since the events of the past couple of days made  me E & T - I was not aware of the flea market else I would have tried to stop by-

We were lucky withteh weather - after it rained the whole time we were driving in - the rain stop just as we arrived at the parking garage - we were able to walk to the theatre and wait online sans umbrella

the theatre was packed - but the audience was wonderfully attentive - this is the first theatre experience in recent memory where there were no whispered conversations or rattling candy wrappers etc.  They also had a strict policy latecomers being seated "at the discretiion of the management" and there didn't seem to be any

the only issue we had was that the couple in front of us were quite tall and kept mvoing tehier heads back and forth  constantly blocking our views of the stage

I went to the box office during inintermissiona nd explaiedn the problem and the very kind man behind the window  allowed us to move up to the box seat stage right -we did have limited
views of far stage right - but since most of the action took place center stage it was not really a problem

The Vixter and I both thoroughly enjoyed the show - even with the  bobbleheaded couple

It absolutely did not feel like  3+  hours - it moved along beautifully -

It was the first time either of us had ever seen a live performance of Hamlet - although we had watched both the Mel Gibson and Kenneth Branagh movie versions

The Vixter was particularly  taken with the monchromatic sets and costuming

We recommend the show - and thank  Jose for recommending it to us!!!

After the show the crowd waiting at the stage door was tremendous - they had police there for crowd control and barrier set up -  we decied to avoid the whole thing and went across the street to John's Pizza were we were promptly seated right at the front window- and then the  heavens opened and oh my did it pour!!

We were very happy to be warm and dry and eating hot pizza!!

By time we were done with our meal the rain had stopped and we had a very comfortable walk back to the car

We passed Sardi's on the way and saw they have a Finneans Rainbow poster in  their front window

Certainly it can only be a matter of time before Elmore's caricature graces their walls!!

FJL - we also passed the Bye Bye Birdie theatre and stopped to look at the cast poster

I told the Vixter about your parody (which she hasn't had an opportunity to see yet) but looking at the poster she didn't get it -  she thought "The guy playing ALbert  looks OK for an old guy - but Conrad is HOT!!"

I guess she IS the target audience - but I bet all the other mommies are going to be joining me in singing your version of Bye Bye Birdie! !!!

We did indeed - and I am grateful for your input - we probably would not have gone had you not told us about the good reviews of the  London show

and congratulations to Jose on her his Big Gay IceCream Truck debut - Can it be long before he has his own Food Channel TV show - certainly he can run rings around that guy who goes to all the diners and truck stops

I think with should have a Dining with Jose and Monkey show - each season should be in a different city - New York, Atlanta, etc

Birthday greetings to George's sister!

Thanks, Julie and Jane and Ginny and Vixmom for the birthday wishes for my sister, Diane!  For dinner, we had local pizza that was pretty good.  My sister made her own vegan chocolate and raspberry with chocolate pudding cake and it was absolutely delicious!  I made the raspberry frosting. :)
