Since October and Johnny Mercer were mentioned in today's notes. It's a little early but i probably won't remember to do this later

And when October goes
The snow begins to fly
Above the smokey roofs
I watch the planes go by

The children running home
Beneath a twilight sky
Oh, for the fun of them
When I was one of them

And when October goes
The same old dream appears
And you are in my arms
To share the happy years

I turn my head away
To hide the helpless tears
Oh how I hate to see October go

I should be over it now I know
It doesn't matter much
How old I grow
I hate to see October go

Re; the new Streisand album

I listened to disc 2 first (the quartet version) and I thought it would be the orchestra versions sans the orchestra. But according to the notes these are different recordings.

TOD

I liked her 60's albums better. I think the turning point came after she won the Oscar. I have never heard What About Today? (the last of the 60's) Streisand, but the change started I believe in 1971 with Stoney End

 The Barbra Album (1963) · The Second Barbra Streisand Album (1963) · The Third Album (1964) · People (1964) · My Name Is Barbra (1965) · My Name Is Barbra, Two... (1965) · Color Me Barbra · (1966) Je m'appelle Barbra (1966) · Simply Streisand (1967) · A Christmas Album (1967) ·

I also like , but haven't heard for a long time is Classical Barbra. I can't remember if the recoding is over reverbed and mannered" like the latter recordings It was different and she took chances

Good morning, all! Today is the first band rehearsal for FINIAN'S RAINBOW, so I will be out most of the day. I am very excited about it, and I've got my new scores, the print out of the original orchestra score, my work copy of this production's vocal score, a pencil sharpener, a red pencil, a drawing pencil, an eraser, and blank paper to cart down to Carol Studios on 11th Avenue and 54th Street. I'm looking forward to the event.

I finally spoke to the landlord's staff yesterday; my September rent check has never arrived. It's a curiosity since both the utilities and AT&T bill I mailed with it cleared last week. It hasn't been returned to me so I'm wondering if there's a Big Thief or Lazy Slob working for the US Post Office. Again! I have a vision that around 2025 it will mysteriously appear in the post and I will be overdrawn.

As to La Streisand, I haven't liked much of what she's done on recording since STONEY END and on film since FUNNY GIRL. I've heard her torturing the tune for "Make someone Happy" on the tv ads and genug ist genug.

JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is also one of my favorite films.

I think it was the first MAJOR movie to deal directly with the Holocaust.  Unfortunately, it came out the same year as WEST SIDE STORY, which swept the Oscars.  JUDGMENT only won awards for Actor (Schell) and Screenplay (Mann).

Frankly, I think that Montgomery Clift was robbed when the Supporting Actor Award went to George Chakiris.  The award was for "Best Supporting Actor," not "Best Supporting Dancer".

It's no secret that Laurence Olivier was originally set to do the Lancaster role.  That would have been an interesting piece of casting.

Another big fan of her 60's albums.  Just about every single one of them is pretty cherce.  I also like STONY END and THE BROADWAY ALBUM.  But out of everything, I most enjoy the first disc of her JUST FOR THE RECORD collection, which featured live recordings from very early in her career.  It's amazing to her Streisand when she took risks with her voice and riffed and trilled and scat through her songs.  It's a joy to hear her sing on these tracks opposed to the mannered perfectionist she later became.

I, too, am a HUGE fan of JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG. I bought the full frame laserdisc just to get the added quality laserdisc offered at the time (and it was NOT cheap). I HATE that the DVD of the film is not an anamorphic transfer.

I remember an article at the time of the Oscars noted that Garland and Clift were both robbed of statuettes for the film basically because it was felt Academy members didn't think stars should be slumming in supporting roles and being awarded Oscars for them. This is absurd, of course, but that seems to have been the thinking about why neither won (and, of course, WEST SIDE STORY swept every category it was nominated for except screenplay which was also against the movie.)
Title: Re: WELCOME OCTOBER - THE TENTH MONTH
Post by: Matt H. on October 01, 2009, 06:40:34 AM
BK, what did the HD version of JUDGMENT look like? Were there specks and dirt and scratches in the transfer? Was it as sharp as you were expecting? Did it look as dimensional as good HD can look? This may be the HD transfer they use for a Blu-ray somewhere down the line, so I'm naturally curious about its quality.

Count me as another who revels in Streisand's 60s output and blanches at most everything else. Even THE BROADWAY ALBUM is overproduced and irritating occasionally with its manufactured dramatic intensity with some of the singing. Still, it's the closest she's gotten to her singing in the 60s.

Favorite track of all-time: "Starting Here, Starting Now."

re: adding "Maybe This Time, "Mein Herr," and "Money, Money" to current stage versions of CABARET:

I still prefer "Don't Tell Mama" to "Mein Herr," but the other two songs are most welcome to the show's songstack. "Money, Money" is far superior to the fast-talking "The Money Song" in the original. All of these, of course, give the role Sally more spotlight time.

I like "The Money Song" and "Money, Money" - but it is hard for me to listen to anyone sing "Maybe This Time" and not hear Miss Liza Minnelli.

As for this Barbara Stryzand person you are talking about, I do not think I know her.  I may have seen her in a movie once with Ryan O'Neal, but I do not know from her singing.  But since that doesn't stop me from expressing an opinion, I will just be like Rufus T. Firefly and say "I'm against it!"

YES! We are Back!

And What A Great Trip It Was
.

Except for a little mishap which I will explain later.

We flew from Miami To Paris to Budapest...spent two whole days in that Beautiful City. The Highlight was The Budapest Opera House-Spectacular and The Synagogue-Beautiful.

Next on to our River Ship= THE AMALYRA.

Everything about being wary about going on a River Cruise(opposed to a large Cruise Ship)was extinguished by experiencing the Warmth -The Accomodations, The Food,The Service. The ship holds about 124 People and we made many friends(from Australia-From Hawaii-From Japan including The US of course)

On To The Journey- Our first Stop was Bratislavia..On to Vienna(wonderful pastries among beautiful sites) and A Johann Strauss and Mozart Concert at Night- on to Duernstein and Melk(wonderful Abbey and Yes! They have Milk in Melk) More about Melk later.

On To Linz-Passau and Regensburg(a Charming Medieval Town)..on To Nuremberg...How appropriate that BK just revisited the movie Judgement At Nuremberg and hoe great to see a City that is the background to one of my favorite Operas DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NURNBERG.

On To Prague(stopping by the exquisite Spa Town of Karlovy Vary(The Grandhotel Pupp was used as the Casino for the new version of CASINO ROYALE) Karlovy Vary hosts a yearly Popular Film Festival)

PRAGUE--- What can one say.....The extreme highlight to (as you get the idea) a Magnificent Trip. The City equals the Beauty of Paris. It's very interesting that Budapest was almost destroyed during World War II and Prague was never touched by the War.The Highlights-The St. Charles Bridge-Old Town Square-Yhe Astronomical Clock-Old New Synagogue-The Prague Castle-St Vitus's Cathedral(truly Spectacular) -The Chapel of St, Wencelas(Old King Wencelas went out...)The Royal Palace-The Food and of course The Beer.

Music surrounds you wherever you go in Prague. On the Streets-In the Cafes-There is at least three or four concerts in different venues every day and every night.

Three Days in Prague---Not enough..We need to go back.

And back to The USA.

And now --back to Melk... When we first landed in Paris we were one hour late arriving. To catch our plane to Budapest we had to rush thru The Paris Airport with heavy Carry On Luggage in hand..Someone told us it would take 10 Minutes to get to the terminal for our flight to Budapest. It took us 45 Minutes. We almost missed the flight. I ,however,as it turns out developed a Hernia in my right side. This was revealed fully to me in pain on the last day in Budapest. Our Tour Guide Pili suggested we wait till Melk to go to a Hospital and check it out. In the small town like Melk Austria there was a spanking new Hospital where my Adjuvant(how coincidental to Todays Word of The Day and Song of The Day-Help Is On It's Way)
Doctor Ursula (a beautiful Viennese Doctor) diagnosed my condition-put the Hernia back in place and taught me how to do the same myself,

I survived..with a little discomfort..but survived the rest of the way.

I will be Operated on here in Boca Raton on October 14th (Out-patient)

It's good to go Travelling as Sinatra sang-but it's Great To Be Home

Happy Birthday's to All I missed whilst I was Away

And A Very Happy And Healthy New Year to All Of The Jewish Persuasion.

Her "He Touched Me" is absolutely (beyond the shadow of a doubt) THE BEST version of that song I've heard.

I love a lot of Streisand, but I would be remiss if I didn't throw in "One Less Bell To Answer/A House is Not a Home" duet she does with herself on "Barbra Joan Streisand"  (and "Since I Fell For You" on the same album is also my favorite version of THAT song).

And her "My Man" as finale to "Funny Girl" (the movie) is POWERFUL and moving.

I'm so very glad I read this morning's notes by BK right after I arrived at work.   How else would I have known that September was gone, gone, gone??

Maxwell Anderson was one smart cookie when he wrote:

"Oh, it's a long long while, from May to September
But the days grow short when you reach September...."

...and Kurt Weill's music is haunting (and depressing) in "September Song."

But...though the number of days seem a long, long while, they certainly whizzed by very quickly.  The older one gets, the more quickly things whiz....except the actual act of "whizzing" which, pardon my bluntness, seems to be a more leisurely-paced activity than it used to be.

Ah, me.....

The older one gets, the more quickly things whiz....except the actual act of "whizzing" which, pardon my bluntness, seems to be a more leisurely-paced activity than it used to be.

Ah, me.....

And as time goes on, things do NOT get better - trust me!

DR Jane you mentioned that you thought the movie 17 AGAIN was cute.

I thought it was just okay. I like Zac Efron and Matthew Perry okay. And near the middle it got better. The idea of it was interesting. But I thought the execution was extremely stupid. I guess there are not that many realistic ways to turn into your 17 year old self. But how they did it was so dumb.

I liked STATE OF PLAY more. Although I did not care for the ending. Sometimes it feels like they try to be too clever. And if i dislike the ending sometimes it ruins the whole movie for me.

But I thought russell crowe was really good (although he looked really odd). It was a good movie except for the end.

Last night's TV:

"The Middle" starring Patricia Heaton.   It certainly doesn't glamourize Indiana, setting the state up as one of those places planes fly over when going from one place to another.  I have a fond place in my heart for Indiana and I found myself rather insulted by the intimations.

It may get much better than last night's show.  Patricia Heaton was a dynamo...but I honestly can't think where this show might go for humor.

And even though I lived in Indiana for five years, I had no idea that "Show Choirs" were THE THING after high school basketball.

Pome for October:

One night in late October
When I was far from sober.
Returning with my load
With manly pride.

My feet began to stutter
So I lay down in the gutter.
And a pig came up
And lay down by my side.

A woman passing by was heard
to say.
"You can tell a man who boozes
By the company he chooses."
And the pig got up
And slowly
Walked away.

This is so-o-o-o cute:

Grace the Librarian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17Y97uKXe3w&NR=1)

Her re-purposing of the car and the Virgin Mary statue remind me of the time Rob wanted to be Sherlock Holmes and didn't have a deerstalker hat.  He used 2 baseball caps, one with the bill in the front and one with the bill in the back, to create one.

Very cute :)

Maybe we should try that to make Sherlock a Deerstalker hat.  If only I could sew.

Mid way through the show I was asking Keith to turn it off, why he didn't is beyond me.  This is the guy who turns things off 3 minutes after they begin.  He turned it off just before getting into her hero costume so I don't know how it ended/began.   I will wait to hear if the show improves before watching again.

Well, it seems that the LATIMES (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2009/09/glee--1.html) has been speaking with MattH:

Quote
Glee': The top 5 reasons to rewatch 'The Rhodes Not Taken'

You'll be conversant on how and why Kristin Chenoweth will win Emmy No. 2. Let's leave her singing out of this for a minute: What colors didn't we see from the Broadway dynamo last night?

When we're introduced to April Rhodes, a boozing glee club has-been, she's a confident star, welcoming Mr. Schu into a home that it turns out she's been squatting in. Two minutes later, outside on the sidewalk with a box of wine, she's drunk and broken, revealing where life has taken her since her high school glory days. Later, in a hilarious montage, she's back on top at McKinley Kigh, teaching Kurt how to "warm up," Mercedes and Tina how to steal using their thighs, and the high school boys what an older woman can offer. She goes toe to toe with Rachel when Rachel tries to explain that, in fact, it's a little pathetic for April to be back in high school. And when she sincerely promises Mr. Schu she'll nix the alcohol, you want to believe in those big, teary eyes that she will because in spite of everything, you're rooting for April. But this is "Glee," and she quickly falls off the wagon.

Then you throw in the songs: Her heart-wrenching, hopeful rendition of "Maybe This Time" from "Cabaret." A busting out of Heart's power ballad "Alone." And the ultimate ode to a bad hangover, Carrie Underwood's "Last Name." Writer-executive producers Ryan Murphy, Ian Brenan and Brad Falchuk couldn't have written a juicier role, and for that, they should be at the top of her list when it's time to give her thank-you speech at next year's Emmys.

MattH, the Judgment transfer looked terrific, as did the other Kramer HD movie, Inherit The Wind.  That they're just sitting on these and not releasing them to either DVD (anamorphic) or Blu-Ray, is just ridiculous.

Thanks for the information!

And argh! INHERIT THE WIND, another favorite, doesn't have an anamorphic DVD out either. I wish SOMEONE would get those MGM licenses for some of the great films of all time and do them RIGHT!

When I got in from lunch, I watched three more. There was a kind of twist to the story in which a member of the unit who had gone rogue was actually working undercover, but I had figured it out before it was revealed.

Kind of feel bad for the producers and actors because when they finished shooting, they didn't know the show was going to be canceled. (It was one of the infamous "bubble" shows.) So, I'm going to assume, before I watch the last episode, that it's left with the expected season ending cliffhanger. We'll see.

Topic of the Day:

I really like her (first) Broadway album, the soundtrack to "Yentl," and...
TOD:

....But out of everything, I most enjoy the first disc of her JUST FOR THE RECORD collection, which featured live recordings from very early in her career.  It's amazing to her Streisand when she took risks with her voice and riffed and trilled and scat through her songs.  It's a joy to hear her sing on these tracks opposed to the mannered perfectionist she later became.

Ditto. :D

Yes, DR Jose, it's precisely a Mexican lasagna and it went together very easily.  It's quite pretty, with the red and green peppers and yellow corn.  I hope it's OK that I used Newman's Own salsa instead of the brand called for in the recipe.  That's what I had on hand.  It's in the oven and should start smelling very good any time now.

I'm back from a long day. The reading went well, and we'll finish th score and most of the new things tomorrow morning by noon. The cast will come in after the lunch break to go through the score with the band. I thought my work sounded part and parcel of the original orchestrations, although I do have one fix to make in linking up the new intro of the Entr'Acte wth the original arrangement of "If this Isn't Love."

As to my bathroom ceiling, it's still falling in; I came home to find plaster everywhere and another wet ceiling. I called my neighbor who said that his ceiling is also falling in, and that means the leak is coming from the 5th floor. I am not happy about this.

I also got a message from the NYCGMC chorus musical director who wants to have a sit-down about this whole situation involving the "Appalachian Carols." The problem is, I don't know when, given the fact I will be at the theatre a lot next week. Maybe Sunday.

DR ArnoldBrockman, sorry about your health but very happy ro read about the trip and to know you will be taking care of the problem soon.

Give me early Streisand any day! The post-Stoney End albums that I enjoy, however, are SONGBIRD and BUTTERFLY.  I probably like the latter for all the wrong reasons, though.  I actually LIKE her take on Bowie's "Life on Mars!"  I can live without her "Guava Jelly" though.
On SONGBIRD, I like "Deep in the Night" the most, but, I don't think there's a weak track on the album.
The one-two-three-four punch of her first solo albums is still remarkable, and that fourth album, PEOPLE, contains my favorite Streisand track:  "How Does the Wine Taste?"  THE SECOND BARBRA STREISAND ALBUM probably gets the most play in my cd player, however.
These first four albums are remarkable in that they still maintain their power, without any real duds on them, so many decades later!
I find myself liking JE M'APELLE BARBRA more and more as time goes by, and I can't do the holiday season without her initial Christmas album.
I think that LOVE IS THE ANSWER will get plenty of play in this house, even though I haven't listened YET to the orchestrated version.
I'd like to her Barbra sing the Jerry Herman songbook. . .imagine what she could do with the songs from DEAR WORLD!  Not to mention the songs from MAME!
And I'm sure that some people find something of merit on her TILL I LOVED YOU album, that's the one album I could do without.

Do you guys all know about this?

www.freenightoftheater.net (http://www.freenightoftheater.net)

It's free tickets to shows on various dates in October - in regions throughout the country.
The site seems to have crashed at the moment - today is the first day to order - but I'm sure they'll have it up and running in a little while if you want to keep checking in.

Wouldn't you know Phoenix does not seem to be participating!

OK, DRs.  We have a fellow DR in need.  I heard from DR Jeanne.  She just learned today that on Monday she will have to have a second ultrasound and a possible biopsy.

She said that she isn't really feeling up to getting on this here site at the moment, but that any ~~~VIBES~~~ offered by her fellow DRs would be most appreciated.

And she didn't ask, but I'm sure she'd appreciate a HHW PM, too, if you feel so inclined.

Just as I suspected, there wasn't a hint in the last episode of THE UNIT that the show was wrapping up its run. There was a personal cliffhanger and a unit change of command and a wedding and more terrorism at work.

Next, I watched tonight's episode of BONES. A very involving case, a very tragic loss. The ending was a BIG surprise and a little unsatisfying, but sometimes life is like that, so I'll cut them some slack on this episode.

And then I watched tonight's SUPERNATURAL "live" and once again found it to be a tremendously involving episode with GREAT work by Jensen Ackles. And Misha Collins got to show two VERY different sides to Castiel which were very entertaining. (I prefer the angel myself, but others may disagree.)

Today I started looking for new office space. My lease goes until next July, but the space I have is really getting too small.  We could probably work with it another year or so, but they're going to want a longer lease than that and there's a lot of space available in town right now, so I'm looking.    I saw a couple spaces in our current building, but the view is a wall on one side and a parking ramp on another.  There is a sort of decent view out of a couple windows, but I hate to make a long term commitmnet to looking at a wall.

On the other hand, it's been empty a long time and if I can get a good deal on a build out, well. I may just think about doing it

I'm going to be making the rounds with a realtor.  We'll see maybe there isn't anything better out there. Well there is, but I mean in my price range.

Oh I didn't mention the space is about 2 1/2 times bigger than what we have now.  The building manager even offered to put in a kitchen for us, lol. Maybe with some creative window coverings we could get the light without too ugly of a view.  Hmmm.

Good Evening!

A few weeks ago, I met another pianist who happens to be quite the foodie - and a True Foodie at that!  Tonight, we headed out to Flushing for some pretty frickin' amazing Chinese food. -From the Qingdao (or Tsingtao) province to be exact.

I'd go into descriptions of what we had, but, at this late hour, I think the PICTURES (http://www.flickr.com/photos/23108900@N02/sets/72157622498442660/) will have to do for now.

I haven't heard anything from my parents, so... I'm presuming everything is all right.  When we were there this past summer, we had arrived after some major storms.  In fact, my Dad spent the first few days back in his hometown wading through knee-deep water.  So, I'm guessing everything is all right.  They may be having "water issues", but it's nothing they haven't dealt with on a regular seasonal basis before. -Again, I guess.  I'll check in with my parents tomorrow.

-I don't mean to seem so blasé about the current situation in the Philippines and Sumatra, but I have also checked the areas that were affected by the typhoons, and it looks like my relatives were in the less-affected area.  In fact, I didn't see my Dad's hometown on the list, and the area that my Mom's family lives in Manila is part of the "high ground".
