Title: THE SOUPY SHUFFLE
Post by: bk on October 22, 2009, 11:59:42 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were soupy, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently looking for White Fang and Black Tooth.

TOD:  The new solo albums from Liz Callaway, Rebecca Luker, and Kate Baldwin.

For many years, I have had a strong desire to record William Finn's "Anytime (I Am There)" and have that played at my own memorial service.  Well, now that song has been supplanted by Steve Marzullo's "Remember."  It's on Rebecca Luker's new album.  And it's an exquisite little gem!

Saw this over on Facebook.  Have no idea if the result is any good.        :-\

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE:

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

1.Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.
2.Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
3.Pour in the milk and oil and mix well..
4.Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
5.Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
6.The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
7.EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel SLIGHTLY more virtuous).

Friday!  A work day.

TOD:

CD - A CHORUS LINE OBC
DVD - WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS

MR BK failed to mention the leading lady of ZOTZ, Julia Meade, who had a "nude" scene that required her to wear a flesh colored bathing suit that was so ugly she said she would rather have done the scene in the altogether.  I think there was some flap in the papers about the coin itself being valuable....but then again Mr Castle was the King of Ballyhoo!

DR JOSE - the show was October 15, 2006, from the Schoenfeld, I think.  I guess I am used to just the bumps from the album......but no he only said "Don't dance" once....maybe she was already too far along....or maybe she stopped the first time he said it.

I have no viewing plans for the evening. I may still do the laundry (our usual Friday afternoon activity and then dinner out) but I may wait until tomorrow morning.

Midtown was busy last night!

Getting from 46th and Broadway to 53rd and 9th took some maneuvering but we made it.

After dinner I walked Ginny and Richard back to their luxury digs on 53rd and Broadway.

He was a major TV personality in Detroit when I was growing up.  I went home from elem school for lunch and ate on a tray in front of the TV.  When I finally got chicken pox (in 7th grade - how humiliating!) I remembered his caution not to scratch because your face would end up looking like a golf ball.

For some reason, none of the television stations in my area carried any version of Soupy Sales, so I didn't grow up with him at all. When he'd make a guest appearance on Judy Garland's show, for example, or Ed Sullivan, he was just another personality, but I never knew he had his own series until I started reading books on the history of television, and SOupy was always a part of the section on children's TV along with Captain Kangaroo and Ding Dong School and Pinky Lee and Howdy Doody, all of whom were shown in my area and all I was much more familiar with than poor Soupy.

I did not watch THE GUARDIAN shows I have left this morning. I decided there was no great demand for the review, so I'll watch them this afternoon and get the review up by 4:15 or so. It's all written, but depending on the content of those last two shows, I might have to tweak it a little bit.

I was livid this morning when reading the newspaper. The local CBS affiliate is having a retrospective on its many years of service to the area tonight (it was the first TV station in the area), and they are preempting MEDIUM to show their special.

Yes, they're showing MEDIUM in the wee hours of the morning, but I'll watch it on HD On Demand which thankfully has all of the series episodes produced by CBS/Paramount a day or two after they air on the network. I should be able to see it in HD on Sunday, I think.

A new series is airing on USA tonight: WHITE COLLAR which has gotten VERY positive reviews from several outlets which I read.

It stars the actor who was so good playing Bryce Larkin on CHUCK for two seasons. Sounds like it's going to be a marvelous new series along the lines of BURN NOTICE, PSYCH, or ROYAL PAINS.

It airs at 10 p.m. after MONK.

And Bitty Schram (Sharona) returns to MONK tonight for a guest shot. It will be good to see her again.

I haven't gotten around to watching last Sunday's THREE RIVERS, but I need to. I read that CBS is mulling taking it off the air. The ratings aren't horrible, but there is definitely a dip between THE AMAZING RACE and COLD CASE in terms of ratings.

I'm afraid they might move MEDIUM to SUnday and put FLASHPOINT back on at Friday. I really like MEDIUM on Friday now. I guess FLASHPOINT could be a Sunday show. It has a lot of heart and might pair nicely with COLD CASE's usually poignant stories.

Although, I have been in a situation where some "surprise" guests decided to drop by, and in order to break any Fire Code laws, those extra guests had to be seated at another table and/or drink at the bar instead of blocking the aisles.

It's another cold and rainy day here in Sioux City, snow around the area, but we missed that. I dumped over an inch of rain out of the rain gauge yesterday and over 2 inches today.  So, not only is it a cold October we're approaching one of the wettest on record.

This really hurts the farmers who can't get the crops in because of mud, rain etc. When they get the corn in the moisture content has too high so they have to pay to have it dried or it will rot in the bins.  (higher prices -lower income on corn)  The beans are the real problem, if the beans start to swell, they will fall out of the pods, potentially meaning very little can be harvested.  That could be a disaster for some of the farmers.   Warm and dry would be a blessing right now

DR Ron....maybe they should add the weather to Farmtown and Farmville, lol

And one more thing about the whole "whole party seating" issue...

The big concern is that the "whole table" won't start ordering until the "whole table" is there.  The restaurant staff wants to provide the smoothest service to everyone in the restaurant, and if there are a series of tickets/orders for the bar and the kitchen to juggle for one table ("top"), then that could un-smooth some of that service.  So, if the restaurant can go ahead and seat other "whole parties" before you, and get their orders processed in a timely manner, it actually helps with the turnover - thus, lessening the wait time for other diners arriving after them.  *However, I have noticed at John's Pizza that if you're part of a large party - ten or more people - they usually have less of an issue of seating you if you're just waiting for one or two more guests.  They really want to keep those 2-, 4- and 6-tops turning.

They may, or may not still reside in New York City and the may or may not still be involved in theater.

Spotted over at Twitter:

-Dates should be formated as MM/DD/YY except for the years 1990 through 1992, which should be denoted in 'Hammer Time.'

-If you're short on space, "fake" may be used in place of "psychic" or "homeopathic."

-The correct title for an unmarried woman is "Ms." "Miss Jackson" should only be used if you are nasty.

-While it's tempting to call them "baristi" because of the Italian roots, the plural of "barista" is "journalism majors."

-You cannot libel the dead. You can, however, libel the undead. Vampires have powerful lawyers and hypnotism, so be careful.

Not even sure why it's weird.

Yesterday was the weird Manhattan morning: when i left the building there was an Asian man wearing a jacket with the initials MHD who claimed he was with Housing & Development trying to find the tenant in Apt 1D. The whole thing creeped me out. Then I got to the subway to find a train sitting there because the driver had gone ballistic when an insane rider who had got into a fight with another straphanger spit on her. She left the driver's cubicle and beat up the insane man. When I got to the subway, there was yelling between her and the insane man, several police and several subway supervisors. It was really crazy. I was late to Toyland.

Part of it is that the lyricist for the long musical is trying to set a schedule for the cast to learn their numbers, and if I'm reading what she's suggesting correctly she's just scheduled the group numbers for twelve hours of rehearsals.  For a table reading.  I think not.  Actors are donating their time and we asked them at their audition if they would throw in a couple of hours to learn their songs - not twelve hours.  So, I've had to send several e-mails reminding them that this is not to be done this way, that this is not the staged reading (and they won't have twelve hours for THAT, music-wise, as one only has twenty-nine hours TOTAL, INCLUDING the performance), blah, blah, blah.

DR elmore - Why go back to 2008? The tax is based on what you made this year, 2009, after March 1, and only if your "net earnings" (from self-employment) are more than $10,000.

"When does this tax start?
The tax is effective March 1, 2009. For 2009 only, the tax is based on ten-twelfths of net earnings for the whole year (this eliminates the need to identify income earned before and after the March 1 date.)"

"When is my first payment due?
The first payment required for 2009 is due Monday, November 2, 2009. This required payment is equal to 75% of the total 2009 estimated tax. The following payment is due Monday, February 1, 2010."

DR DAW, I have long felt William Finn's Anytime to be a hauntingly beautiful and unforgettable song.  The first time I heard it was a live performance of Elegies, and by the time Carolee Carmello finished singing it, I was a stupid mess of tears streaming down my face.

Well...

The lyricist needs to learn to teach "faster" then. ;)

-Was the lyricist expecting people to have their music memorized (too)?

TOD:  The new solo albums from Liz Callaway, Rebecca Luker, and Kate Baldwin.

For many years, I have had a strong desire to record William Finn's "Anytime (I Am There)" and have that played at my own memorial service.  Well, now that song has been supplanted by Steve Marzullo's "Remember."  It's on Rebecca Luker's new album.  And it's an exquisite little gem!

DR DAW, I have long felt William Finn's Anytime to be a hauntingly beautiful and unforgettable song.  The first time I heard it was a live performance of Elegies, and by the time Carolee Carmello finished singing it, I was a stupid mess of tears streaming down my face.

I will have to listen to Remember.  I haven't heard that one yet.

DR Julie - That whole sequence in "Elegies".... <major sobbing>

My accountant says go to your 2008 1040, take the line 12 amount and multiply it by .0034; I owe $150.45 as my bit to help out the goddam asses at the MTA.

Because it's the easiest way to pay an entire estimated payment for all of 2009. I doubt there will be much difference between my 2008 and 2009 incomes.

Before I left on my Friday errands, I watched last night's rerun of THE MENTALIST. This was one of my favorite episodes of the first season, and it was just a joy seeing it again.

(I have not yet bought the DVD set for THE MENTALIST's first season. It was too expensive when it came out, and I'm waiting to get it if Deep Discount has a November sale. If they don't, I'll wait until I can get a reasonably priced copy. The price usually gets halved if one waits a year, and I can wait.)

While I ate my lunch, I watched last night's PROJECT RUNWAY. A very clear cut winner, I thought. No one else's design was in the same league, and I thought the second and third place finishers should have been reversed. The bottom three were the appropriate ones for the bottom, and the right person went home.

Then I watched the final two episodes of THE GUARDIAN. The show completely came off the rails in these last two episodes. The legal side of the series was almost totally set aside for EXTREME melodrama among all the regular characters. I found a lot of the behavior and reactions SO ridiculously unbelievable, especially from folks who are supposed to be GIFTED lawyers, that I just threw my hands up.

I know if I am offered the opportunity to review either the second or third season of the show, I will take a QUICK pass.

Heading back to the DVR, I began watching other things to get them cleared off the DVR. I began with last night's 30 ROCK. Kind of a disappointing episode. Tracy is such a tiresome character, and they give him WAY too much attention. Always love Will Arnett's deceitful character, but the plot surrounding him wasn't the greatest one either.

I don't recall where I found this, but I assume it is from Shakespeare:

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so.
How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."

Yes, the site is back up, but I'm done with this crap and have just made the decision to have it hosted elsewhere with unlimited bandwith so we can grow as much as we care to as fast as we care to.  The designer will be uploading all the folders at six-thirty to a different address so we can test it, then somewhere around midnight we'll do the switchover and it will be as if nothing had happened other than I will now have a hosting company that is available for tech support 24/7.

And now that I'm in this mode, I am going to move haineshisway.com to this new hosting place, too.  That's a little more complicated and will take some time, but I hate our current hosting company and always have, they're way too expensive and I'm way too constricted in terms of traffic and bandwith and this constant having to archive posts and crap.  I can get three years of unlimited space at this other place for what I pay for a year at our current host.

But this may require a lot of change, which will take some time because this site was designed and put together in 2001 and it's an ancient beast.  The discussion board software won't change, but the main site most likely will get a total revamp as soon as I see how difficult it will be to transfer the humungous number of files and information over.  It will be expensive, I'm sure, but it's something we have to do and I want the ability for video and a smoother running radio show with archiving possibilities for past shows.

What a day this has been?  And it's not over, as I have a work session at five or five-thirty that I really don't want to do now.  I just Fed Exed Brent the booklets to sign.  The cost?  For an overnight (regular, not morning) delivery for Monday in a Fex Ex envelope?  $50!  That's the last time I ever use Fed Ex and I would have stopped it and taken it to the post office (under $20 for overnight envelope) but he'd already rung it up and I just was so irked that I stormed out of there saying they'd just lost my business forever.

I think that moving the actual haineshisway.com site will not be as difficult as I think, as long as the current hosting company sends me all our passwords.  I have them somewhere but wouldn't even know where to begin to look, since that all happened two computers ago - they may be in my old AOL filing cabinet, in which case I'll be able to retrieve them but I've just written our current host asking for all of that info, saying we're going to be doing some reconfiguring and potentially moving the site to a different host - I want out of there NOW - I'm paying triple what I'll be paying at the new place, and have all these ridiculous constraints, none of which will be an issue with the new host.  I should have done this when we changed the board software, but it was just too much to deal with at that point.  Once we've moved, then my designer and I will begin discussions about changing the main part of the site - possibly redesigning, but making it all easier to deal with in terms of getting new content on there.

My accountant says go to your 2008 1040, take the line 12 amount and multiply it by .0034; I owe $150.45 as my bit to help out the goddam asses at the MTA.

Because it's the easiest way to pay an entire estimated payment for all of 2009. I doubt there will be much difference between my 2008 and 2009 incomes.

That's true.  You can't win the Tony until June of 2010, and that is when the money starts.

It's escalated beyond dislike - I will never do business with them again - period.  I may call a customer service rep to complain.  First off, I recently sent a Fed Ex box standard overnight to Seattle that was ten bucks cheaper than this envelope was.  I guess they now base it on WHERE it's going, too - it just never ends - fifty buck for something that used to cost $14.98 not that long ago and that could go anywhere in the United States.

My wife and I (in Austin) Fed-Exed a check to our financial advisor in Los Angeles that was supposed to arrive yesterday.  It didn't, because the driver attempted delivery after 5:30 when the office was closed.  It finally got there this afternoon.

I had the most relaxing, leisurely evening of viewing tonight. I got a bunch of things watched on the DVR even though more stuff is being loaded on there as I type.

I began by watching last week's PSYCH. A somewhat different episode, and the change of pace was good. Writing wasn't as strong as in some previous episodes, but it was still an enjoyable episode and gave Corbin Bernsen more to do this week.

Then I watched last week's episode of MONK. The birthday party stuff was pretty tedious, but the basic mystery, while not having very many suspects, was OK.

Next I finished a gay film that I recorded off Logo weeks ago - A FOUR LETTER WORD. Not real great. Jesse Archer and Charlie David were the two top-billed actors, both very attractive, but the story wasn't much, and the direction was VERY flat. Of course, the movie was obviously made for $1.65.

Moving Kritzerland to our new server is going to take longer than anticipated because the fellow who took the order did something incorrectly, and it's been fixed but could take up to eight hours to implement itself.  Once that happens it should be fairly smooth, but I've asked my guy to call the host and make sure that whatever downtime there is when doing the actual server switch be kept to the bare minimum - like no downtime at all.

DR JOSE your new proposed gig sounds interesting as long as it doesn't interfere with any opportunity that may come up on the great white way.

Thank You, DR JRand.  Alas, with the way the current season seems to be shaping up - with both currently running and soon-to-be-opening shows - my work prospects for the "Great White Way" are looking, well, "not so good".  It's a very strange work climate here in NYC right now for everyone in "The Biz".  The "trickle down" is hitting us now.  Even the standard audition cycle has changed.  Companies are casting their shows - with usually smaller casts - either much earlier than normal, or closer to the first day of rehearsal.  I still get one or two calls each week from some of my fellow pianists asking if I have any "extra" work to pass on to them.  Well...  If they're not working, then I'm not working.  So...

I've actually been thinking of getting back into "Classical Mode" again lately - not exclusively, but alongside my theatrical work.  Music is music, to me at least.  And, practically speaking, any income at this point and/in time, is, well, income.  And, to be totally honest and forthcoming, the possibility of moving back to Richmond or DC for a few months just to get things back on track (in many ways) is more than a possibility.

It finally stopped raining here, at least for a day or two when it will start up again.  Had a good time at an artist friend's open house tonight.  Tomorrow is Art Walk.  there are something like 24 artists showing their work in different locations and you can walk from one to another.  They also have a trolley you can ride from place to place.  I'll probably go to part of it.

There is a painting I really like, but am not sure where it  would work.  So, my friend gave me first right of refusal. So if someone else wants to buy it, he'll call me and let me know so I can go ahead and get it if I really want it.  It's a very bold design, but I really like it.  Now I just have to find a place for it

What a day this has been?  And it's not over, as I have a work session at five or five-thirty that I really don't want to do now.  I just Fed Exed Brent the booklets to sign.  The cost?  For an overnight (regular, not morning) delivery for Monday in a Fex Ex envelope?  $50!  That's the last time I ever use Fed Ex and I would have stopped it and taken it to the post office (under $20 for overnight envelope) but he'd already rung it up and I just was so irked that I stormed out of there saying they'd just lost my business forever.

bk - Did you send them in a FedEx Letter Envelope? or in a box? The packaging does make a difference.  A stupid one, but one nonetheless.  However...

Sending something on a Friday for a Monday delivery should have been sent and billed at their 2-day rate, not the overnight rate.  If you have your tracking number, I'd call FedEx - once you've calmed down - and make sure the clerk rang you up properly.  You may have a refund coming your way.

Fed Ex envelope.  The weight is what they said caused the cost - 1.2 ounces or something (I was shipping 100 booklets).  It's really ridiculous, and I think they calculate Friday to Monday as overnight.

You want to hear the topper of bad USPS stories?  I had a customer order Evening Primrose, which was shipped right to him just before mid-September.  He wrote me at the beginning of October telling me it hadn't arrived.  So, another lost package - great.  We waited a few more days just in case and then I sent him a replacement, which he got in two days.  Well, the original package just showed up today - FIVE and a half weeks after it was shipped!

Well... If you're not going to use the USPS... Nor FedEx... Will you be switching to DHL?  -Does anyone still use DHL?  Is DHL still in business?

;)

*As I've stated before, I've had very good USPS and FedEx karma.  I've only had one Express Mail package ever not make it "on time" - and I received my money back as they promise.  -Said package was supposed to arrive by Noon the following day; it arrived at 1:30pm.  And anytime I've sent or received anything FedEx, I've never had an issue.  Touch me. ::)

Disney music at Disney Hall

From the L.A. Times   by Jon Burlingame
October 19, 2009

Disney music at Disney Hall? Some might say: What took so long?
On Tuesday night, Walt Disney Concert Hall will host "The Disney Symphonic Legacy," the first time a program of all-Disney music has been offered since the venue opened in 2003. And it will mark the Disney Hall debut of longtime Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conductor John Mauceri.

The concert will draw from more than 70 years of orchestral music written for Disney-produced movies, from " Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) to the more recent "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy (2003, 2006, 2007). Mauceri will conduct the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Cal State Fullerton University Singers.

But it's not the usual medley of big song hits, says Mauceri by phone from his North Carolina home, where he now serves as chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and where he was poring over copies of the original "Snow White" orchestrations, trying to condense 73 minutes of music into about 45 for the program.

"Music was as important to Walt Disney as the visual," says Mauceri, who conducted Disney-themed programs at the Bowl in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Those concerts "got the people at Disney thinking about the validity of the actual music scores, which are rarely performed without the use of films or characters. Can the music itself be the subject of a concert?"

Mauceri conferred with Thomas Schumacher, president of the Disney Theatrical Group, which oversees not just the stage versions of Disney films such as "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast" but also all live presentations of Disney-owned material outside of the theme parks.

"I think there is enormous affection for this music," Schumacher says. "As a concert, it's totally valid. The question is, should this be part of a franchise?" To that end, Tuesday's concert is an experiment to see if the concept -- an entire evening of the orchestral music of Disney films, old and new -- can become a series, with future editions spotlighting "Pinocchio," "Bambi" or other famous titles.

As for the venue, a hall that the Disney family gave tens of millions of dollars to build, Schumacher deems it "irrelevant" but Mauceri says "the irony should not be missed."

The larger point, says Mauceri, is that listeners "will be really surprised at the continuing quality of this music, and come away having a new respect for the genius of these composers -- and Walt Disney himself, in valuing the highest quality of music in telling his stories."

Program elements

The event transposes Disney movie music into a fairly typical symphony-orchestra program:

* A light overture to kick things off, in this case a new concert version of music from Danny Elfman's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" score;

* Another short piece, a suite from Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty," as adapted by George Bruns for Disney's 1959 film;

* A more substantial work: a new, 15- to 20-minute "symphonic portrait" drawn from all three of Hans Zimmer's "Pirates of the Caribbean" scores;

* And a rousing finale for the first half: a suite from "The Lion King," featuring music mostly by Elton John and Zimmer.

In the case of the "Nightmare Before Christmas" overture and the new "Pirates" piece, both have been adapted by Mauceri from the original scores (with the blessings of the composers, Mauceri says).

The second half will, for many, be the reason to attend: What Mauceri calls "a symphonic retelling" of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Following the model of his semi-staged reading of "Sunset Boulevard" at the Bowl in 2006 -- where Franz Waxman's original film score served as the backdrop for actors reading the 1950 film script -- Mauceri has adapted the original "Snow White" script and score for 10 singer-actors, orchestra and choir.

What's intriguing about the program is that it's being done without film. (Mickey and Goofy won't even be in costume greeting patrons at the door, apparently.) Explains Mauceri: "The other restorations that I've done are meant to show how the great film scores are viable as concert works. They work just the way the great ballet scores work in concert, or the great opera overtures work, as tone poems. The decision was not to put up a screen and have the orchestra huddled under it [but rather] to bring the music forward, so it can be heard."

Adds Schumacher: "When you hear 'Snow White,' for the first time in your life you're going to hear what Walt Disney heard when they recorded the music. The film doesn't have the fidelity that you can get today." Notes Mauceri: "You can barely hear some of this on the soundtrack, but there's a delicate moment scored for harp, celesta and solo women's voices. I can't wait to hear that."

Disney cartoons, both short subjects and feature-length vehicles, were treated to orchestral music as far back as the "Silly Symphonies" of the early 1930s, according to Ventura composer and film-music scholar Ross Care, who has studied and written about early Disney music. "Walt seemed to have an ear for it," Care says. "It was obviously very important to him, because from the very beginning they were getting great musical scores."

The difference at Disney, compared with other studios, was that a "collective composing" mentality existed whereby multiple composers worked on a single film, Care says. The songs for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," for example, were written by composer Frank Churchill and lyricist Larry Morey, while the underscore -- involving the adaptation of the song melodies and the creation of new subsidiary themes -- was done by Leigh Harline and to a lesser extent Paul J. Smith, names largely unknown today.

Still, notes Care, "the music holds up. The film is basically like an operetta, so that will easily translate to a live performance."

We are back from spending the afternoon at the Morgan Library and shopping for tickets to Nightingale (Sunday evening) and the Gazillion Bubble Show (Saturday morning at 11).  The latter is interesting to Richard because he used to teach all kinds of math & science lessons using bubbles.  We're sitting in the 3rd row, so we may show up for Finian's Rainbow covered in bubble goop.  After visiting the box offices, we hung out in Starbuck's and then had dinner at Thalia before seeing the first preview performance of Ragtime.  Loved it!

After a little shopping at the corner drug store, we climbed to the 5th floor and are about ready to crash.

Ah! Then they should have advised you to put the booklets into FedEx Box, which may have saved you some money.  However, FedEx's overnight rates have always been based on the distance the letter or package has to travel.  UPS does the same thing with their Zone system.

You could go away from 50th Street and try the Applejack Diner. It is a diner but there's nothing wrong with that. It's on th corner of 55th Street and Broadway, just two blocks from you at 53rd. You can't miss it. It's on the southwest corner at 230 W 55th St, New York - (212) 586-6075. I haven't eaten there for a while but I remember it being satisfactory and there is nothing like a diner breakfast to keep you going for the day ahead in the rain.

There's a new Latin place on 9th between 53rd & 54th that has a good weekend brunch, Agua Dulce (http://www.aguadulceny.com/).  It's also quickly become the "new and hip" place for post-show drinks.

Also along 9th Avenue:
Eatery (at 53rd)
Renaissance Diner (51st & 52nd) - A standby for many a DR
Vynl  (between 50th & 51st)

Oh, and basically right across the street from where you're staying  - up at 55th & Broadway - is Brasserie Cognac de Monsieur Ballon - or just Cognac (http://www.cognacrestaurant.com/about.html) for short.  Good French bistro/brasserie food, plus they have a separate bakery and coffee counter - and their croissants and pastries are 1/2-off later in the day.

-And that Cafe Europa across the street from you is also a good.

And I wasn't complaining about the Fed Ex service, just the continuing price hikes to ridiculous new heights.  Sending a Fed Ex envelope not that many years ago cost fifteen dollars.

This was such a weird and somewhat annoying day and I was so miffed at not being able to jog that I just got back from the long jog - slightly different route to avoid jogging under a dark freeway underpass which is normally in the last half-mile that I do - I simply did the last half-mile at the beginning of the jog.  It was actually pretty easy and pretty brisk, too.  I'm really glad I did.  My earlier snack from Gelson's was some of their yummilicious corn bread stuffing - just  a nice, small amount.  I had some pineapple, too.

Actually that is incorrect.

Sending an item First, Overnight and Standard on a Friday will get there on Monday and it is rated as such. Two days will get there on Tuesday.  Express would get there on Wednesdy. The same will go if you drop it off on a Saturday and you want it for next day it will get there on Monday. The only difference is on Friday you can ask for a Saturday delivery but there is a surcharge of usually about $30. (There is also a surcharge for First Overnight. Not every place has it and it is not really worth it.)

Now as for pricing.

Envelopes that weigh .50 and under. The cost for Priority from major city to major city like LA to NYC is in the neighborhood of $27.00. Standard (afternoon delivery) is about $3.00 less

The next level up is Pak

The one after that is Box.

The way that it is priced is anything over .50  is then price at 1lb and increases by 1lb after that.

Now if you can fit everything into a pak it will cost lest to send if you put it in a box. (Small, Medium, large paks or boxes don't matter. It is weight and type)

Finally the most expensive is a customer package. size, weight & destination is factored in.

It is how many items they can stack into a cargo container most effectively

You were no longer calculated at the envelope rate, but at the PAK rate as you were over .50. It didn't matter that it is an envelope. The computer does not give the envelope rate as an option. So you were rate at the next higher rate.

And yes you are correct about Monday being the next day?

Did they offer you Saturday deliver? (It's more and you probably would have turned it down. But they should have offered)
