Today, I'm going to work for a few hours, then I'm going to my sister's for pizza, a movie and to hand out candy in her new neighborhood.  That's the extent of my day.  But before all that happens, I have to install a new shower head in my shower.  There's a part that's cracking and it's easier to replace the whole thing...and it's just getting old.  I had it in the house I rented from my sister, so it's more than three years old.  Now I have a brand new shower head. :)

One year, I was dressed as a tourist (Hawaiian shirt, shorts, sun glasses, camera and funny hat) and when anyone came to the door, I pretended to take pictures of them, like they were a tourist attraction.  I didn't have any film in the camera (on purpose), so I can't post any pictures.

Ok. So. They have now said we must wear one of the shirts with our logo at the Harvest Festival tonight. I say it's too late to institute such a rule. A uniform was never mentioned; in fact, I asked if we could wear costumes, and the minister said he didn't care. I have my shrike costume all ready.

Good morning, all! My dear froend Matthew just cancelled on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY this afternoon, so I think I will putter about the apartment, get some work on Volume 2, and watch the William Castle set of DVDs.

All my flurry of activity has ceased so I have nothing to report this morning. As to the TOD, my only Halloween memory is the one for 1979 when I first moved to Manhattan. An actor I'd worked with in dinner theatre was a founding member of the New York City Gay Community Marching Band and he recruited me to write the newsletter for the band. In 1979, the band marched in the Village Halloween Parade, and Kaiper Wilson and I made an appearance as Siamese twins. I remember nothing of our costume beyond the fact that we had to sew our bib overalls together. Kaiper went back to school for a law degree and I have no idea where she may be now. I hope she's well and happy.

TOD:  In first or second grade I went to the elementary school costume parade as a bag of groceries.  It was a very elaborate costume that my mother spent a lot of time constructing.  I won a prize.  Somewhere, I even have a photo from the local paper.

I have fond memories of trick-or-treating with friends back in the Los Angeles suburbs, where the weather and street layout were so conducive, and also in Connecticut in later years.  I don't think we shall see those relatively carefree and happy times again.

DR ELMORE some people I know have been disappointed for one reason or another with PARANORMAL ACTIVITY...for what it's worth.

I would like an AMELIA report from DR CILLA LIZ.  As to the other, I have no intention of seeing Mr Michael Jackson in THIS IS IT. I like his music, but his performance persona - not so much.  And the veneration and media coverage of the past year - inexplicable.

I'm not exactly sure what the weather is gonna be tonight. It is supposed to
rain all day. But maybe stop around 6pm. I just hope if it rains that it is a
light drizzle.

It is supposed to be warm 17C (which is around low 60s). But it is supposed
to be very windy. Oy! I hope my hat doesn't blow off!

Thanks, DR JRand59! I've got conflicting reports from friends in Manhattan as well, but I loved, and was terrified by, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT while others loathed it, so I'm open to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY; I know nothing about it and I look forward to seeign if it lives up to its reputation.

In reference to your comment on Chris Fitzgerald's calves, I told him his legs were attracting a great deal of comment everywhere, and he said, "I guess that's the result of 20 years of soccer."

TOD:

One year while I was a theatre major in college, a few of us decided to raid the costume shop for Halloween get-ups.  Lo and behold, we found that the costumes we had rented for our just completed production of HENRY IV had not yet been returned so we picked and chose out of the pile and augmented.  I wound up being a vampiric Earl of Westmoreland.  All our costumes were very striking but they were also heavy and as hot to wear as they were on stage.

THE HARDING AFFAIR by James David Robenalt - true story of Warren G. Harding and his neighbor Carrie Philips - and how a German baroness who was arrested as a spy when she was hiding a Navy lieutenant under her bed in a Chattanooga hotel in December, 1917, figured in the case.

Intriguing, funny, and a quick read.

I don't have any really memorable Halloween stories.

I do recall that, one year, I had a pull-over rubber Frankenstein mask and answered the door for tick-or-treaters wearing it and a turned-around suit jacket.

A couple of the kids ran off screaming.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The most memorable Halloween's - at least the one I remember(?) - are the ones where theatre folk were involved. Coincidentally(?), my best costumes have been ones that I've come up with at the last minute, or at least the last hour or two. So...

-Halloween 2000
-Bus & Truck tour of Anything Goes
-Somewhere in Montana or North Dakota (I think)
-All 60+ members of the cast, orchestra and crew in a HUGE hotel suite.
-Me running through Wal-Mart and Target grabbing various sale items off of the maternity clothes racks and make-up counter.
-Presenting... You know her... You loved her... You hated her... You've seen her before... "Imelda In Exile"

'Nuff said. ;)

But I may head down to The Village to watch some of the parade - I haven't done that in years! Or I may just stay home and continue to make sure I don't get sick(er).  We shall see.

Sadly, I don't think I ever got a picture of the whole outfit. Well, at least not the skirt - which eventually was turned into a small tablecloth for one of my end tables.

*Btw, I believe the total cost of that costume came in just under $12! And that included the fuzzy slippers, skirt, top/mumu, "pearls", makeup, and the shower cap!

As much as I love to joke about it, I have actually not.

So far.

I remember I had a gig where I shared a house with three women. Since I was the "man" in the house, I became "Mama Jose" - rhymes with "Rose".

*And I'm not sure I'd qualify "Imelda in Exile" as "drag".  That was more like "desperation".

Jrand, interestingly, most of the source music for our release of my Holy Grail score wasn't in the film at all - only two cues of it and even those didn't last for more than a few seconds coming out of a radio - I felt no sorrow in losing them.

Good Afternoon!

A question from a friend that a DR may be able to answer:

"One evening, I was listening to the radio and heard a recording of a female vocalist singing a medley of "Guess Who I Saw Today" followed by "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" followed by a reprise of "Guess Who I Saw Today." I have no idea who it was.

Scarily, I wrote to Jonathan Schwartz at WNYC and HE DIDN'T KNOW!!!

Might you?"

'Wish the police'

What Google Voice told me my father said:

Hi Amy. It’s, Jess dad just calling to see how things are going on. Wish the police. Happy Halloween or something. I’m just curious as to what they’re going to be working tonight. live in close calls. So alright when you get a chance give me a call.

What my father actually said:

Hi Amy. It’s just dad calling to see how things are going and wish the boys Happy Halloween hunting. I’m just curious as to what they’re going to be wearing tonight, other than clothes, of course. So, all right, when you get a chance, give me a call.

I am due for reimbursement of hotel and train tickets to and from DC for the Sept 1 reading of Life Begins At 8:40 and it is now two months later with no sign of a check. Since the same person and staff screwed up our invoices in July and August by not submitting them to Accounts Payable - and then gave me hell for bitching about nonpayment - I wonder if the same fuckup has occurred again?

The mexicans next door have their music playing, and instead of the normal Mexican music, a Mexican version of "Popcorn" has started.  It's way to slow.

Plans tonight to scare the trick or treators at my Aunt's in San Mateo with a driveway display of something brilliant my sister has come up with we'll see.

Personally, I'm probably going to camp out on the couch with Otto (schnauzer 1) who is not feeling well, he had something in his paw that was infected and now he is on antibiotics.  He hasn't moved from his bed since Wednesday except for the occasional trip outside and to eat.  Poor Manny (the 6 month old schnauzer) wants to play and Otto does not.

No.  Well, yes I suppose he could... but... whatever that's another story, never mind.  The application doesn't state that he has to submit his application in person.  And since they are not going to actually taste your dessert, the application and video can be sent in.  Personally, I think he should try to get to a casting call, but he doesn't see it as necessary.

IMHO - he should go to an open call.  I may still try and talk him into it, but he's not much for changing his mind.  And THAT's ANOTHER story.... you know the rest.

Well, the Paris Châtelet February 2010 version will have .....

Well (again!) I know that some DR can't stand Mr L. Wilson, me I can't stand Miss Caron!

Oh well; to each his own.

(I "know" at least 2 (Two) DRS who "detest" his singing!  :P)

There's a book out on him right now (In French) with loads of nice pictures...

This "Musicals" cd goes back to, what, 15 years ago?!

Any excuse to try on your tool-belt wearing Lesbian costume.

In 1979, the band marched in the Village Halloween Parade, and Kaiper Wilson and I made an appearance as Siamese twins.

I remember the parade very well. That was the year that "Roller- Arena” changed her name to “Rollerena” and was the belle of the ball.

Anthony is fixing our Cuckoo Clock. A friend gave it to us 2 years ago and the bellows have finally worn out. The paper tore on both bellows and our cuckoo doesn't cuckoo anymore. We went on line and found a repair shop and bought new bellow tops. We ordered them Wednesday afternoon and our post person delivered them this afternoon. When the USPS works, it's great. Soon we should have a fully functioning cuckoo again!

I'm reading, for the first time, the book Auntie Mame. What a delight! I finished all the books in the house and was rooting around for something "new". I went to the library and they didn't have any copies of They Forsyte Saga but there was Patrick Dennis and Auntie Mame in a new (2001) edition with an introduction by Paul Rudnick and an afterword by Michael Tanner (son of Patrick Dennis). Some things are slightly different and many portions are much longer but it's a very funny book. I'm quite enjoying it. After Mame I will begin Michael Tolliver Lives. I haven't been reading much the past few months but between the chaos at work and getting rid of cable I find I have much more time and it's well spent reading. We watch movies (or BBC television shows) on DVD but watch very little other television. I'm very happy to have the extra time now to just sit down and enjoy a good read. I need to find a good copy of Forsyte Saga (Anthony's is old and wrapped in waxed paper to keep it from falling apart) so I can begin that which may take me through the early winter.

As much as I love to joke about it, I have actually not.

So far.

I played Greta in BENT. The character sings "Streets of Berlin" in drag and then the next scene finds Greta taking off the makeup and getting back into men's clothes. It's the only time in my life I have ever worn drag.

I think bellows are normal. The word bellow makes it sound big but the pieces being replaced are actually small. The cuckoo isn't that loud and we latch the door at night so it doesn't cuckoo through the night.

The Parade will begin in a couple of hours. We can hear it quite well, being a half block from the festivities. We can't see anything but we can hear it.

It almost didn't happen this year. The recession has affected all sorts of things including the committee who puts the parade together. There wasn't enough money for a full out parade so they were just going to do a scaled back version. When the news came out people begin sending in donations from $5 to $50 dollars and lo and behold the parade will be full size!

Then I watched Episode 2 of NATIONAL PARKS. This is dealing with the Everglades and Mt. Rainier parks.

BTW, these Blu-rays are in 1080i and they are not top notch video quality. The camerawork is all over the map with some of it looking very good but much of it being less than top notch HD images.

1080i doesn't have to look necessarily different from 1080p. COMPANY is in 1080i, and it's sharp as a tack. NATIONAL PARKS is not.

Meet the cast of the forthcoming Broadway revival of A Little Night Music (http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Photo_Coverage_HiHo_The_Glamorous_Life_A_LITTLE_NIGHT_MUSIC_Meets_the_Press_20091031)!!

Miss Zeta-Jones is such a gorgeous looking lady!

Too bad they didn't give Hunter Ryan Herdlicka a chance to comb his hair and fix his tie after coming in from the very windy day before they took his photo.

Too bad Trevor Nunn can't afford a hair cut.

30 beautiful and inspirational castles from around the world (http://www.andysowards.com/blog/inspiration/30-beautiful-inspirational-castles-from-around-the-world-stunning-architecture-scenery-in-photos/)

At first I thought I had read: inspriational!  ;D :D

Francois, I think you need to get your eyes and glasses checked!

No, not really!
And DR Daw is on the joke too.

He has misspelled "inspirational" at first but, by the time I posted, he had corrected his typo!

Actually, my eyesight is good enough tonight to read the rude comment elmore just posted.
Anything for a laugh I guess!

Well, I am sorry my sense of humour is different.

Our terra cotta jack-o-lantern is glowing in the window and Rob is in costume as Aragorn and we expect trick-or-treaters in about 15 minutes.  We only get the hearty ones who choose to trudge up our steep driveway.

Is Richard in mufti, or is he scaring off the witches and goblins?

Good Evening!

Yes, Virginia, there are trick-or-treaters in Hamilton Heights/West Harlem!

It was fun walking around for a bit.  Some people were sitting out on their stoops with big bowls filled with candy to give out to the ghouls, goblins, princesses and vampires who came by.  I had also forgotten that most of the stores, bodegas, restaurants and chinese food take-out counters also kept a stash of candy on hand to give out.  In other words, it was a bit more festive out there than I thought it would be.

Happy Halloween!

It's quite hopping in our neighborhood - many kids, parents, and a lot of elaborate outdoor set-ups involving dry ice, strobe lights, music, etc., etc.

Greg swept the porch and put batteries in the sidewalk lights, but our house is set too far back and most kids don't want to take the trouble to walk all the way down our driveway. And it's miserable and drizzling, too. I'm glad Greg bought candy that I wouldn't be inclined to consume!

Well, I must go and shower and get ready for tonight's festivities.  I need to see if my camera is charged, although I'm sure there will be phots from others if it isn't.  One of the hosts is a professional photographer and one of our friends takes tons of photos of every get together.  Then she burns all the photos of each person on a disc and it's your christmas present every year.  Kind of cool idea, actually

That is a nice gift.  There are bound to be a few photos on the disc one will like. :)

I went to an ironworks place today to have something custom made. It was a huge place, beautiful inside and actually cleaner and more organized than my house! Greg and I both thought it would be a great place to shoot---it looked so old world. We asked the Italian owner/designer if anyone had ever shot there and he said no, it was too expensive for them to shut down, but he did sell furniture to that "black man who dresses like a woman."
Me: "Is he really tall?" (thinking of Atlantan RuPaul)

"Yes!"

Turned out he was talking about Tyler Perry, LOL.

I am kempt.  Everyone at Sally Hershberger was in costume and it was pretty amusing.  Teddy had a wig on (I'll post the photo shortly), and his assistant was dressed as "Teddy."  I came home and swept away all the leaves brought by the wind, downloaded the finished master for the Holy Grail and its companion piece - I was nitpicking a couple of edits on the latter, cutting about a minute of music that was a little warbly and now it's really great - the CD will run just over seventy-seven minutes, real value for money.

One of the very pleasant surprises from Wednesday's Beer Dinner:

Humboldt Fog is a goat milk cheese made by Cypress Grove Chevre, of Arcata, California, in Humboldt County. It is named for the local ocean fog which rolls in from Humboldt Bay.

Humboldt Fog is a mold-ripened cheese with a central line of edible ash much like Morbier. The cheese ripens starting with the bloomy mold exterior, resulting in a core of fresh goat cheese surrounded by a runny shell. As the cheese matures, more of the originally crumbly core is converted to a soft-ripened texture. The bloomy mold and ash rind are edible but fairly tasteless. The cheese is creamy, light, and mildly acidic with a stronger flavor near the rind.

Well, dromenland translates to dreamland

Thanks.  I wonder if naar is near.   Do you know what language this is?  The person doesn't say where in the world he is from.  I do have a general idea from the sound of the sentence.

It sounds Dutch.

TCB, haven't been out there - but I'm happy to go if it's going to be a fun production.

She is a very talented girl, and she is just the right size to play Peter.

When I did the show, Fly by Foy refused to fly Captain Hook (don't ask me why).

Actually that isn't true.  We didn't use Foy, we used the other company that flew Cathy Rigby.  I believe they are based in Vegas.

I bought a DVD of the original version of 13 GHOSTS.  It doesn't say that it contains 3D glasses, so I am assuming this is a non-3D edition.  Of course, if I remember corrrectly, the 3D was pretty poor in this film anyway.

It's not in 3-D. The glasses were for ILLUSION-O, to allow you to either see the ghosts with the glasses or not without.

I have the original release that came with glasses and they pretty much worked as advertised.

DR DERBRUCER - I <heart> Humboldt Fog.  Have you really not had it before now?

Never before! And it was paired with a Belgian clone:

Hennepin Farmhouse Saison (http://www.ommegang.com/index.php?mcat=1&scat=3&yr=1)

"As you pour this rich golden ale into your glass, consider your surroundings. Are you in a restaurant? Outside on the deck? Is it hot and humid? Cold and brisk? Take a drink. Feel the way Hennepin is bright and lively in your mouth with a warming mix of spicy gingersnap and citrusy hops. Refreshing. Relaxing. It's true: no matter where you are, Hennepin is the perfect ale for all seasons."

We were supposed to go out trick-or-treating at 5pm. But i went with my sister to her friend's house so megan could go with her friend lauren. But they only ordered dinner at 5pm.

Then they had to paint the kids faces. They were giong as matching pumpkins. They had on their jackets, black splash pants and black turtlenecks. Then they had orange garbage bags (the ones with the pumpkin faces on them). And they had pumpkin hats. And pumpkins on their faces.

Only the other mom did her daughter's face first. All orange. But megan only wanted pumpkins on her cheeks. So the other kid did not want her face to be orange. so they had to take off all the orange and redo it. And tihs was at 8:30pm.

At about 6:40pm we went out till around 8pm.

I could not believe how many kids were out. On one street corner there were more than 50 kids. Although most of the older kids did not look like they had costumes. And some had their costumes under their jackets (i don' t like this).

But the kids (my niece and her friend) looked so cute. Like twins. 2 little matching pumpkins. It really was cute!

For those of you looking for a Blu-ray bargain, Amazon is currently running a promo of $10 off if you order Up and Monsters, Inc. together--it just happens automatically when you check out.  For some reason they also gave me an extra $4-odd off as a "promotional discount," but I'm not sure what that's about.  It works out to only about $15 per 4-disc set that way, a heckuva deal.

We went to the Silver Screen Spook Show tonight for WHITE ZOMBIE. We saw lots of great costumes. My favorite was a guy with a mustache, wearing a derby hat and a dress, with a Titanic life preserver. I'm assuming he was a man posing as a woman so he could get a liferaft. Pretty witty costume.''

The spook show wasn't one of their best and could have used some "editing", but still fun.

HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7BdSyFONWQ) is the video story of Terri White from last night.

Thanks for the link!  It was a great story and very nice to see Terri singing a bit in the show. :)

DR George;

I posted many links to clips the other day and one of them showed Terri singing the WHOLE number (Necessity, that is!) for a special press event!

I bookmarked those, but haven't watched them yet...I will now!  Thanks for the reminder!
