Good morning, all! I see that JohnG stoped by for a second. I can only tell you that I've known him since 1985, when he worked for my hometown newspaper, and he moves around: in 1990 or so, when I was doing a show at Cohoes Music Hall titled ANGELINA, he showed up. I had forgotten that and he reminded me. Anythng else about himself he has to tell you all.

Speaking of Cohoes Music Hall, which is a beautiful little theatre, the town of Cohoes was the most haunted area I have ever stayed in. The whole town exuded an aura of dead spirits walking about, and, because it seemed to close down at 6 pm, the walk from the theatre to my apartment was a long creepy walk past empty shops. The apartment I stayed in was so haunted that, on weekends when the cast went back to Manhattan and I stayed alone to work on the score, I kept the lights on all night and played the radio at full volume for company. The stage crew claimed the theatre was haunted as well. As towns go, Cohoes is an abandoned factory town that's really urban-depressed, but I have no urge to stay there ever again.

So, this morning, it's back to the McGlinnventory to prepsre for a move.

Cohoes publicity on Google tells me it's a "city!" I never would have guessed. In 1990 it was a real hole. It had a great pizza place, which was on the first floor of the apartment I stayed in.

John Wayne movies? THE SEARCHERS and MCCLINTOCK.

I don't have anything on tv tonight except for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, which shows on my schedule as being on from 8:30pm-11pm. I know there is a presidential address listed. Not sure if it will end on time or if Fox will just cut out at 8:30pm.

A very guilty pleasure of mine is also on tonight. The finale on MTV of The Hills (although i don't get MTV so i will have to wait till tomorrow when it will be online). I don't know why, but i love this show!

I have an honest-to-goodness day off today! Even if something comes in the mail, it won't be a pressing release and I can have "my day." I have several Blu-rays which have accumulated here over the last two weeks while I've been busy, so I plan to start on them this afternoon starting with ANGELS and DEMONS. This is #1 priority in my to watch Blu-ray stack.

Nancy's obit was in the paper today.  We had known this already, but her mother was California's Secretary of Education for many years.  Also, in the small world department, she was born in Utah and graduated from the U of U like I did.  I really wish I had talked to her more about her background--I'm certain now we must have had a lot of friends in common, despite her being 10 years or so older than I am.

I totally agree with you on EL DORADO, but I'm not particularly fond of RIO BRAVO either.  It's far too long.

I once interviewed Howard Hawks, who said to me: "I'm not interested in telling stories.  I'm interested in making good scenes."

I was definitely taken aback by that comment, but it sure offers a valid explanation as to why the director's later films are so poorly paced.

Some interesting photos.  Info on two SUPERMAN television scripts that were written but not filmed, and the differences between the scripts and what ended up on the screen.

Fun book for fans - written by Michael J. Hayde and available on Amazon.com.

I seem to remember Elmore disputed his hometownishness vis a vis Portland, but Marc Acito is being listed again as a Portland native with his piece "Holidazed" which is running here.  It is getting pretty scabrous reviews on the "backstage" blogs full of theater cognoscenti.  The Oregonian of course loved it.  It was done here last year, too.

He's not listed on the "Artist Roster" for this season, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.  However, since casting is usually in place one, if not two seasons in advance, he may not be "in rotation" until the 2010-11 Season.

Finally a little good news--La Manse has two above ground oil tanks, and we knew from experience to investigate whether there had been underground oil tanks at one point which had leaked.  Oregon law requires that they be remediated and decommissioned to DEQ standards.  Well I called Washington County last week and got the disturbing news that they had a file on the house, but nothing in it.  The supervisor said that generally happens when an owner discovers an underground tank leaking but never follows through to have it remediated.  She said a remediation company had at least done a site survey because she had the name of it in her file.  So I called last week, and they said they'd look into it.  I hadn't heard back from them, so I called again yesterday.  Well, lo and behold, the owner just called me, completely embarrassed and chagrined.  It turns out his company had completed all the decommissioning and remediation work in 2004, but the day after they finished, he left on his honeymoon, and they had forgotten to submit the reports for final certification to DEQ!  Because of their screwup, he said they are assuming all additional costs to get the site fully certified as meeting DEQ standards.  It could have been a $30,000 expense to clean up (15K per tank), so I'm really happy for this brief moment in time.  ;)

How could I forget Red River, a marvelous Wayne film that also has incredible performances by Montgomery Clift, Walter Brennan, and a host of great character people.

As to El Dorado, I know it's an imitation of Rio Bravo, and I don't think I've enjoyed it so much in the past, but last night I just got sucked in, part of that being because of the Wayne/Mitchum interplay, and part because of Caan vs. Ricky Nelson.  Arthur Hunnicut in the Walter Brennan role was also very good.  And the Nelson Riddle score is great.

I watched a SUPERNATURAL episode before I started fixing lunch. It was a good one where Sam and Dean are put under a living death spell so their ghosts can communicate with a ghost who knows why deaths have stopped happening in this paticular Wyoming town. A good episode and a welcome appearance from Misha Collins aka Castiel.

I watched the CASTLE rerun while I ate lunch. It was a repeat of the season premiere that had Castle in the doghouse for trying to find out more about the death of Beckett's mother. Robert Gant was one of the guest star suspects in this episode.

Then I watched ANGELS & DEMONS. Both the theatrical and extended versions are on the disc, and I opted for the extended version (146 minutes). The movie follows the book very closely to my recollection (I read the book quite a long time ago), so some of the problems I had with the book were also present in the movie. A lot of racing around in the film (which gets kind of tedious after the second killing) since the heroes are working on an hourly deadline to prevent assassination of potential Pope candidates.

Better than THE DAVINCI CODE? Well, they're both pretty preposterous in terms of the villains depending on a lot of things happening in a certain sequence in order for their schemes to work out. I'd honestly say one is no better or worse than the other for me.

well... i had a very rough night and a difficult morning.  i'm doing better now thanks.  poor keith is so exhausted he slept through my restlessness and quiet groans.  i keep telling him not to feel bad, i was glad not to disturb him and he needed his sleep soooo very much.  i would also have asked for a pain pill and messed up the new schedule i set for myself.  i would have been very unhappy had that happened.  i hope keith realizes he can lighten up a bit at night.  i keep promising i will wake him and not attempts movements on my own i should not be doing.

Just ate some tuna pasta salad and am watching the most extraordinary DVD - the 1954 Academy Awards presentation, complete.  I got it on eBay and it's just amazing to watch this - somehow in 1954 during what I believe is the show's first broadcast on TV, they knew how to do this 1000% better than the buffoons that do it today.  The longest acceptance speech thus far has run about fourteen seconds.  The Awards that year were split between ceremonies in LA and NY and it works really well.  LA host is Bob Hope, who is brilliant, and NY host is, surprisingly, Thelma Ritter, who is also wonderful.  And the STARS.  And the GLAMOUR.  And the outfits.  It puts today's circus of a show to shame.  They just did it - and because of it there's excitement in the air.  So far my favorite thing was the appearance of the amazing Muzzy Marcellino, whistling The High and the Mighty (Johnny Desmond does the song itself).

DR Jane - How is Sherlock doing? Has Keith been taking him out for his daily walks?

keith is walking sherlock right now.  sherlock has been very upset throughout this.  on the trail he kept lying down in front of me and nuzzling my head.  later he was left in the car while i was taken into a building never to return.  keith would take sherlock to the building everyday and again leave sherlock in the car, agitating sherlock more.  keith found sherlock was better if they went in keith's car instead of mine.  keith could spend more time visiting me if he could take breaks to walk sherlock.

wow, that took a lot of effort to write all those short choppy sentences-lol

I have been reading with great enjoyment Paul Rudnick's latest book, I SHUDDER, consisting of some memoirs and stories, and it's all quite entertaining, from his mother and her sisters to writing SISTER ACT for Bette Midler and dealing with a difficult Nicol Williams on I HATE HAMLET. I just finished a funny but moving chapter on two deceased friends, his agent Helen Merrill and the director Peter Mark Schifter, who died of AIDS at the age of 44.

On a frustrating front, will these reports for BABES IN TOYLAND ever line up? The discrepancies between what are on my desktop and in the PHI repository are driving me a bit mad today. Oy!

Lo-o-o-o-ng day of meetings with the grantwriters.  I had to be there early to meet the speaker and the caterer.  We had a good, festive holiday meeting followed by an inconclusive bored board meeting.  The president and I then had to wait around for the caterer to come back to pick up all their gear.  On the upside, I brought home a pan of pasta that we just had for dinner.

I saw that online last night.  I was very surprised that the federal defenders here in Iowa didn't know anything about it.

Thanks for the all the greetings. Glad to be here.

I'm surprised at the number of John Wayne movies I enjoy, including "True Grit" and "The Cowboys." But my favorites are:
"Stagecoach"
"She Wore a Yellow Ribbon"
"The Quiet Man"

Are there any actors out there who could take Wayne's place today? It seems as if Harrison Ford's style has kind of calcified into something as one-dimensional as Wayne could be when he was phoning it in. But Nathan Lane in "Birdcage" was a lot more entertaining, as someone else pointed out.

monday i had plans to wash my hair, instead i was at the er.  FINALLY i have had a nice shower and my hair is clean.  twice in the hospital they used a self contained hair washing shower cap.  i suppose it helped a little.

i feel so good, clean wise.  my body feels like the wreck the back of my left shoulder looks.  today was the first time i saw the bruises.  keith had warned me.  he says it looks much better today.  the front of mr arm, where the stitches are, look as if i've been beautifully embroidered.

You could get a tattoo to cover the scar and really make it look embroidered! ;)

i thought about that ;)

None of this surprises me a bit knowing how much Sherlock loves you!

DR Jane - I remember how good that first shower after being in the hospital feels.  Do you have to keep your shoulder dry?  That would be tricky, I'd think.

dry would have been near impossible.  keith taped a clean heavy duty plastic bag over a dry clean towel.  both more than covered the self dissolving "embroidery" and the 11, at least half inch, strips of tape helping to hold the embroidery in place.  after my shower i/keith patted the shoulder dry.

nothing compared to his devotion to his daddy.  keith thought it would be easier 4 sherlock to adjust to sleeping on the floor BEFORE i returned home.  he showed his displeasure by taking the dog treats off the night table, without permission.  he seems to understand the concept of the bed now that i'm home.  he is allowed up while we watch tv and is sleeping in his own bed during the night.  i have to be careful where he is when i get up at night.

he is and i know this truly scared him.  he was so sweet.  the doctor said the surgery would be at least 3 hours.  one of the last things i said to him was a reminder not to be worried after 4 hours.  he assured me he knew, but he did't.  4 hours still frightened the heck out of him.  of course the emergency call at the wmcy monday did' help.  i heard the message relayed to get him to the phone and it was much calmer than the one he received.

For anyone who will be in NY this coming Saturday, and doesn't have plans already, there will be a one night only benefit concert of Peter Mills' musical The Taxi Cabaret, this Saturday - two performances -- 4pm and 8pm.  Tickets are only $25 and $40 and are tax deductible.  There will be 36 actors performing the piece.  I understand the rehearsals are going really well, so it should be a lot of fun.

You can find out more about it here, if you're interested:

No, I think the 1952 awards (presented in 1953) were the first televised year.

I began by getting the rest of the inside of the house decorated. Not that I do THAT much, but I decided after the awful ordeal this past summer that I'd take the opportunity to make the house festive this year. I haven't decorated for athe last couple of years.

Can anybody tell me why "Sun Valley Serenade" hasn't been released on DVD yet? Glenn Miller and Orchestra playing some great tunes, the Nicholas Brothers with Dorothy Dandridge bringing down the house with "Chatanooga Choo-Choo" and even Sonja Henie skating. Stereo sound on the music, too. But I have to rely every Christmas on a bad VCR copy from the library to watch this fave.

Once I was ready to settle in with a movie, I chose the latest Dreamworks animated film MONSTERS VS. ALIENS. It was not as big a hit as most Dreamworks animated films usually are (though it did quite well), and I could see why. The story really wasn't all that much fun. I did love Seth Rogan's B.O.B., Hugh Laurie using his own naturally accented voice as a professorial cockroach, and, best of all, Keifer Sutherland as a gung-ho Army general.

It was going to be in the next wave of Fox Studio Classics, and then Fox dropped the line from their release schedules. Now, they don't seem to be issuing much of anything on DVD in a classic vein any more.

Next, I watched A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS. No, not on TV (thought it was broadcast tonight). Amazon reduced the price on the Blu-ray for a few days last week, and I snapped it up. It has been considerably cleaned up and the colors are truer and more appealing than the old DVD I had, but they've tricked out the music and sound effects into a 5.1 audio track (the only one available), and much of that just doesn't work very well (when Lucy shakes the cash can with the nickels in it, for example, why should that sound be in the front left channel?). So the picture was good but the sound was distracting.

Next, I watched my old DVD copy of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. I've never bothered to upgrade this old copy. It was the original release with awful color timing and a picture loaded with noisy color, but unlike CHARLIE BROWN, I watch this once a year only, and I just haven't been willing to spend any more on it.

I ended my evening watching an episode of CASTLE from the first season box set. I chose the one with the frozen lady's body found melting in a tree. This was the episode where Castle first got the idea of seeking out the killer of Beckett's mother. Made a nice pairing with the second season premiere which I watched today during lunch.

Once again, it looks like I will have tomorrow off since I got no review discs today. So, I'll likely watch GLADIATOR on Blu-ray tomorrow. This has gotten very negative reviews for the transfer, but at $10, I couldn't pass it up when Amazon had it on sale last week. (I easily passed up BRAVEHEART. I'll NEVER sit through that again.) If I have time tomorrow, I'll do my own A/B comparison with the DVD to compare the transfers.

Good Evening!

I have to say the combination of an early curtain time (7:00pm), a 90+ minute play, plus the "remnants" of Daylight Savings Time, really sort of fooled me into thinking it was much, much later when I left the Schoenfeld about two hours ago.  But at least I can catch up on most of tonight's DVR viewing before midnight instead of after. ;)
Title: Re: THE DANCE OF DECEMBER

As for A Steady Rain...

It's a very well-written play, very smartly constructed; a good play, not a great one.  It sort of seemed like a very amped-up combo of "Hill Street Blues", "The Shield" and "The Wire".  Again, I thought it was a good play, but I also thought the "formula" was just a bit too obvious (which is a very picky criticism). Anyhoo...

The performances by Mssrs. Craig and Jackman were very good, but I'd have to give the acting - and accent(!) - honors to Daniel Craig.  What really impressed me about both of them was how they really were able to come across as "regular Joe's".  Yes, they are "Stars" starring in a play (that probably would not have been produced on Broadway without their participation), but there was no sense of "Hollywood" - which was a good thing.  -Even during their curtain speech after the show, they were very personable, funny and humble.  -Oh, and sexy, of course. :)
Title: Re: THE DANCE OF DECEMBER

DR Jose - how much money did they auction the shirts for tonight?

The top bid was $5000.  However, Hugh Jackman offered a compromise of sorts.  He asked the person who had bid $4000 if he would come up to $4500, and if the person who bid $5000 would then match that for a grand total of $9000.  Each winning bidder would get a shirt signed by both actors. -And that was in addition to those willing to donate $1000 for a picture backstage with both actors.

*Apparently, they've already broken the BC/EFA fund-raising record for any single show.  My friend, Lane, who accompanied me tonight, has been helping out with the post-show collections over the past couple of weeks, and as of this past Sunday, A Steady Rain had already raised just over $1.1 MILLION!!!  -Not bad for a show with a cast of TWO!

**I think the highest bid for the shirts has been $11,000; and there have been many nights where they've had 50 audience members line up for the post-show pics - at $1000 each - with Mr. Craig and Mr. Jackman.

One very interesting thing about the tickets I won for tonight's show...

I was expecting the tickets to be marked "comp" when I picked them up at the box office. Instead, they were marked with their full price. From what I could tell, they were probably set aside for a ticket broker, but were turned in for re-sale, re-distribution. Consequently, I had very nice seats for tonight's performance: center mezzanine, third row, on the aisle. :)
