Just ate some tuna pasta salad and am watching the most extraordinary DVD - the 1954 Academy Awards presentation, complete. I got it on eBay and it's just amazing to watch this - somehow in 1954 during what I believe is the show's first broadcast on TV, they knew how to do this 1000% better than the buffoons that do it today. The longest acceptance speech thus far has run about fourteen seconds. The Awards that year were split between ceremonies in LA and NY and it works really well. LA host is Bob Hope, who is brilliant, and NY host is, surprisingly, Thelma Ritter, who is also wonderful. And the STARS. And the GLAMOUR. And the outfits. It puts today's circus of a show to shame. They just did it - and because of it there's excitement in the air. So far my favorite thing was the appearance of the amazing Muzzy Marcellino, whistling The High and the Mighty (Johnny Desmond does the song itself).
